Can you spare 10p for Scunthorpe hospital?

A visit to A&E is never going to be a fun experience, but this month – as the NHS marks its 73rd birthday, an appeal has been launched to raise £70,000 for some added touches to make visits a little easier And as little as 10p could make all the difference.

The appeal is being led by Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust’s (NLaG) official charity, the Health Tree Foundation (HTF).

The charity has crunched the numbers and worked out that if every adult in North and North East Lincolnshire donated just 10p, it would raise over £30,000.

That’s almost half their target for the price of a single-use plastic carrier bag (if you can think of anything better than that that you can get for 10p you’re doing better than we did!)

And instead of a crummy carrier bag, each 10p donated to the appeal will go towards fantastic facilities like: • Mobile gaming units and interactive floors to help keep our younger patients amused while they’re waiting to be seen • FREE mobile phone charging facilities to keep you entertained and in touch with your loved ones • Sky Inside artificial skylight panels to help provide a more pleasant focal point for patients in our paediatric and resuscitation cubicles • Screens which can be used as TVs and digital information screens

The cost of installing all these amazing facilities in the new Emergency Departments currently being built by the Trust in Grimsby and Scunthorpe is just £35,000 per site, and it’s all been picked out by the Emergency Department staff based on what they see in A&E every day.

For those who can spare a bit more than 10p, how about £9.99 to help those who need to dial 999 - or maybe you could organise a fundraising event to really help the charity get things moving.

As part of the NHS birthday celebrations, a number of ‘Big Tea’ events will be taking place to raise funds and say thank you for all the hard work of the NHS staff, who always give their all but have gone that extra mile during the global pandemic.

Clare Woodard, charity manager, said: “It is very exciting to have been able to launch this appeal on the same day as the NHS birthday. Sadly, most people will need to visit A&E at some point during

their lives – either as a patient or accompanying a loved one. We want to make what is never going to be a nice experience as pleasant as possible.

“These additional enhancements will make their next visit easier – whether that’s by helping to distract or entertain younger patients or something as simple as being able to charge their phone.

“Please get behind this appeal and donate what you can or organise an event to raise funds. Let’s make these new A&Es the best they can be!”

Fundraising events already in the pipeline include a charity cricket match between NLaG doctors and local GPs, an open-water swim and bake sales.

• More high-visibility and covert patrols in the area, including plain clothes on bikes

The first passive drugs “on street” dog operation for several years within the area.

Humber talking has been continuing in the Town Ward area by your local officers. We do this to see what problems, if any, you are having in your community. Together we can work with our partners and help solve some problems raised. If an officer does come to visit you, please be honest and give a true picture of what it is like where you live. For example, some recent feedback included

Scunthorpeproduced film helps raise awareness of child exploitation Last month, a specially commissioned short film was produced in Scunthorpe.

Called ‘Trapped’, the film aims to educate viewers on the issues surrounding child exploitation and encourages people to report incidences as quickly as possible.

Trapped is a true North Lincolnshire production, with young people from the area helping to shape the impactful storyline and characters, which are true to life.

Local actors also make up the cast, whose characters reflect on events to help viewers identify the different ways they are trapped in their respective situations.

The film was commissioned by North Lincolnshire Council’s Youth Justice Partnership and forms part of the Not In Our Community campaign.

Now in its seventh year, this has helped thousands of young people understand how grooming and exploitation works so that they can better protect themselves, spot the warning signs amongst friends and know who they can go to for help.

John Gilbert, who wrote and produced the film with the help of the young people, said: “Everyone who has seen Trapped has been blown away by how well the cast have brought the characters to life, especially given that many of them are in their first acting roles.

“The characters are based on real people and as viewers we see how their understanding of what is happening progresses through a series of interviews. Child exploitation is complicated. Our hope is that by taking viewers on this journey to figure things out for themselves they are better equipped to recognise risks and identify that the

right thing would be to reach out and help.”

Police and Crime Commissioner for Humberside, Jonathan Evison, said: “Early intervention is vital to provide young people and communities with the tools to protect themselves. Not In Our Community works closely with young people and partners to develop strong campaign messages and impactful innovative resources to raise awareness of child exploitation.

“A partnership approach is vital in tackling these issues and I am grateful to North Lincolnshire Council for working with our campaign to produce this high-impact awareness raising resource.”

Cllr Julie Reed, cabinet member for children and families, said: “It is essential that we continue to raise awareness on child exploitation and do all we can to eradicate it in our communities. This film

has been produced as a result of working with our fantastic and aspiring young people and it’s great to see their hard work reflected in such an important topic.

“Alongside our partners, the council is passionately committed to ensuring that every young person can enjoy a safe, secure and happy childhood, without the fear of exploitation.

“Trapped, and other like-minded resources, are so important in raising awareness of these issues and will help people to identify the early warning signs of an exploitative relationship before it has a chance to develop. This is an invaluable resource which can be used in a variety of settings in the future”.

SCUNTHORPE CHEERLEADING TEAM DOING FLIPPING GREAT DESPITE PANDEMIC CHALLENGES The last year has been tough for us all, and certainly sports groups who had to stop training and attending competitions due to several lockdowns However, local cheerleading team, Tsunami Allstars Cheerleading, have just recently smashed two competitions both physically and virtually!

The Allstar Cheerleading Team in Scunthorpe teach lessons in cheerleading, stunts, tumbling, gymnastics, cheer tots and cheer fit classes, catering for small children to adults and all abilities.

Scunthorpe Journal had a chat with Hayley Pearson, co-founder, to find out more about the team and what they have been up to.

Hayley said: “Our Cheer City Competition in Leicester was unfortunately cancelled but instead turned virtual. Therefore, at our Scunthorpe base, we filmed all our routines and all the teams absolutely smashed it. The results from the competition were three 1st places, two 2nd places and three 3rd places.

“When lockdown hit, we moved all the classes

online to Zoom. We had to adapt and change our way of teaching to make sure everyone was still learning new skills.

“I want to say a huge well done to all our athletes who came back into the gym in April and learnt full competition routines. Even through all the isolation, changes and hurdles, you never quit and put 100% effort in.

“A few of our athletes also headed to Bournmouth for the Cheerleading International which is the biggest event of the year. The team is made up of the elite of the elite from all our teams. The team put on an amazing performance after only five training sessions together.”

Definitely something to cheer about! Well done to everyone at Tsunami Allstars Cheerleading and keep up the brilliant work!
