Popular market set to as the North Linc July’s Continental Street Market attracted thousands of visitors to Scunthorpe town centre, featuring numerous stalls selling delicious hot and cold food and unique craft items Hosting successful events in Scunthorpe town centre is part of the council’s wider plan to attract visitors and transform the area through public and private sector investments worth £60million. Plans include the refurbishment of Scunthorpe Central Library– which reopened its doors in May as a community hub where residents can borrow books and get advice on training and jobs – and a new indoor market for Scunthorpe in the former BHS store. New offices in Church Square will also bring

Page 8

around 700 more people to the town centre every day. Ongo’s new housing association headquarters is now open and the extension of the council’s Church Square House will mean staff can move from other buildings into the town centre, saving taxpayers £350,000 a year. Cllr Richard Hannigan, Deputy Leader of North Lincolnshire Council, said: “It was fantastic to see the town centre buzzing with all the extra visitors at the Continental Street Market. Traders on the market were reporting brisk sales and were pleased to see Scunthorpe residents out supporting them again.

o return in September colnshire Festival “I want to give my thanks to our street cleaning teams who managed to keep on top of the extra rubbish produced by all these visitors. These teams work day in, day out across North Lincolnshire, and we’re really proud of the work they do. “Their work, along with the new planters and hanging baskets from the Scunthorpe and Ashby in Bloom group, ensured the town looked its best! “The town centre is changing. Over the years, free car parking has had a huge impact and now we’re starting to see bigger changes with the refurbishment of Scunthorpe’s library, which reopened its doors as Scunthorpe Central, and the new indoor market on its way. “Hosting successful events and opening new

office space brings people into the town centre, supporting local shops and businesses and creating a busier and more active town centre that will help to attract new businesses or encourage others to expand.” The Continental Street Market is operated by RR Events, a North West-based Event Management Company specialising in special event and themed markets. The market is travelling the length and breadth of the UK as part of its 2018 tour. It will return to Scunthorpe town centre as the North Lincolnshire Festival from 21-23 September. At its heart will be the always popular Continental Street Market, alongside a host of local producers, craft traders, activities, fairground rides and a packed line-up of entertainment.

National award recognition for campaigning Mum Page 12

August/September 2018 - Issue 9

A Scunthorpe mum who campaigns tirelessly for fully accessible toilet facilities has had her efforts recognised, after beating more than 24,500 people to be shortlisted for an award Changing Places campaigner Lorna Fillingham has been nominated in the Positive Role Model for Disability category at the National Diversity Awards. She started campaigning after realising standard accessible toilets did not meet the needs of her disabled daughter Emily-May, eight. Lorna started a petition calling for Changing Places toilet facilities with an adult changing bench and a hoist to be made compulsory in larger public buildings, and delivered it to Downing Street back in February. Now, she is one of 124 nominees to be shortlisted from 24,584 entries for the awards, which will be held in Liverpool in September. Lorna told the Scunthorpe Journal: “I realised three years ago that my disabled daughter’s world was shrinking because of the lack of toilet facilities that she could use in the community. “She needs Changing Places toilets, with an adult changing bench and hoist, and when I started campaigning there were just two of these facilities in the whole of North Lincolnshire. I started a petition and went on local media. Now there are nine registered Changing Places facilities in the area, with more to come, and my petition currently has over 54,000 signatures.” Lorna’s campaign has been supported by a growing number of MPs, including Scunthorpe MP Nic Dakin, who joined her at Downing Street in February. She was also joined at No 10 by Paralympian Anne Wafula Strike, who said: “Lorna knows first-

hand how a lack of sufficient toilets is impacting negatively on families, carers and disabled people. “She’s working tirelessly to put Changing Places’ campaign on the map. I am committed to supporting her all the way in this important campaign.” The National Diversity Awards ceremony, at Liverpool’s Anglican Cathedral on September 14, will be hosted by Scissor Sisters frontwoman and Radio 2 presenter Ana Matronic, alongside television presenter Brian Dowling. Lorna said: “I have spent a lot of time working on this campaign, and am therefore very proud to be nominated for a National Diversity Award. I was even more stunned when I learned that I had been shortlisted. In the meantime my fight for my daughter’s dignity and freedom continues.” To sign Lorna’s petition online, visit http:// bit.ly/toilets4all Left page photo caption: Lorna Fillingham (second from right) pictured outside 10 Downing Street with Scunthorpe MP Nic Dakin, Paralympic wheelchair racer Anne Wafula Strike and Parliamentary assistant Ross McLaren

Sun Room Clinic helps give a bit back to those affected by hair loss Experiencing hair loss due to a medical condition can be a traumatic experience, but one small business owner in Scunthorpe is doing what she can to help people through the difficult process.

Kayleigh Downs runs the Sun Room Clinic on Eastfield Road and as part of a monthly give-back scheme, she gives one client with a medical hair-loss condition an eyebrow, eyeliner and scalp micropigmentation treatment free of charge. Kayleigh told us: “It’s so heart-warming to see a smile and share a hug and maybe a tear or two

because I have helped to give someone their confidence back. I call it ‘pay with a smile’ and it’s wonderful for clients with alopecia, for example, or someone who is having cancer treatment or living with another hair-loss condition. Sport with a social conscience Most of us have someone close to us whose life has been affected by cancer, and local charities such as Firefly Cancer Awareness and Support play a vital role in helping people through what can be a traumatic time

Thankfully, Firefly benefits from muchneeded donations from Doncaster based RM Sports Events, which stages events throughout the year featuring sporting personalities from both years gone by and the present. The company is run by Martin Rowlands, who ensures that a percentage of all money raised at each event from the likes of signed memorabilia, goes directly to Firefly. Martin told the Scunthorpe Journal that the business started working specifically with Firefly just over a year ago, but over the years has raised in the region of £40,000 for various charities. “At each event we hold we help Firefly to raise awareness of what they do and how they help local

Page 26

people whose lives have been affected by cancer, as well as making a donation,” he said. RM Events holds all kinds of genuine memorabilia from different sporting personalities, and can also provide and manage the auction service at events held by other organisations too. Past events have featured darts legend Phil Taylor, NRL player and coach Wally Lewis, and snooker superstar Ronnie O’Sullivan. Upcoming events include an evening with Rob Burrow and Danny McGuire at the Keepmoat Stadium on Saturday 10th November and an evening with TT racing legend John McGuinness at the KCOM Stadium in Hull on Friday 19th October.
