Scunthorpe granted funding for new Community Diagnostic Centre

Funding has been secured for a new £19.4million Community Diagnostic Centre to be built in the town centre

The centre – which is due to begin offering some services to the public this winter – will be a one-stopshop for health checks, scans, and tests, providing you with access to a range of diagnostic tests closer to home, reducing the need to come into hospital and reducing waiting times.

Chief Executive of Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust, Peter Reading, said: “Our priority will always be to provide our patients with excellent standards of care – and we believe that moving some of our diagnostic services out into the community will allow us to do that.

“Our plans are at a very early stage but, should our planning application be successful, we will work with our partners in Primary Care, Community Healthcare and North Lincolnshire Council to build the new facility, where we will be able to offer patients tests for a range of conditions, such as cancer, heart and lung disease

Page 6 Scunthorpe Journal is brought to you by CreateTVT Please mention Scunthorpe Journal when calling advertisers

– including X-rays, MRIs, ultrasounds, and CT scans.”

“Patients will be referred to the centre by their GP or consultant, and it will operate in parallel to our diagnostic departments at Scunthorpe General for inpatients and those requiring emergency care.

“This will allow the hospital to conduct an estimated 146,000

additional checks every year, enabling more patients to be seen more quickly, reducing waiting times and helping you to access the care you need in a more timely way.

“This is not only more convenient for patients but is also more efficient for staff and frees up clinician time to help further cut the waiting lists.”

Alex Seale, North Lincolnshire Place Director, NHS Humber and North Yorkshire Integrated Care Board, said: “One of the biggest potential benefits to you as patients would be that you’d no longer need to come on to our busy hospital site in order to have these tests carried out. Instead, you’ll be able to go to the town centre, where parking is plentiful and there are excellent public transport

links. This also has the added benefit of freeing up parking for those who do need to come to the hospital.

“There are also infection control benefits, as reducing the number of people coming to our acute hospital sites naturally reduces the risk of spreading infections.”

Leader of North Lincolnshire Council, Councillor Rob Waltham, added: “This is great news for North Lincolnshire residents and another positive note for the high street with more Government cash backing the plans to build a new future.

“It is also further good news for the town centre in Scunthorpe - a major investment, backed by government, which will drive more people into the town centre for more reasons.”

From cuffs to custody

In this issue, Scunthorpe Policing Team talks to us about how custody works and what the teams deal with day to day

“Custody can be a challenging environment to work in, so teamwork and adaptability is critical to the success of the entire process, including everyone’s safety.”

PERSPECTIVE:

Response officers regularly attend a large volume of incidents in one day, and the outcome of the majority of what they respond to is someone being arrested and escorted to custody. Custody can be a challenging environment to work in, so teamwork and adaptability is critical to the success of the entire process, including everyone’s safety. Our detention officers are there to ensure individuals who have been arrested are safe, have access to and understand their rights, and are treated with fairness and dignity.

It’s a quick-changing and fast-paced environment, and no two days are the same, so that sense of teamwork and comradery between different commands and departments is crucial. Therefore, both our response officers and neighbourhood policing teams work closely with our detention officers, and often spend time checking in on their prisoners, or they could be placed on cell watch. Not only that, but some may also work in an overtime capacity to further support their custody colleagues.

One such officer is Dave Cave, and we spent the morning at Birchin Way custody in Grimsby, for an insight into how the cogs keep

turning, all the way from cuffs to custody.

We started our morning by shadowing a Custody Sergeant who was authorising the charge and remand of a prisoner, ensuring they understand their rights, and are informed they have a right to a solicitor, medical care and any other support they might require.

Dave then went on to conduct welfare checks on all the detainees, explaining that everyone requires a different level of observation. Some are checked on every hour or half an hour whether that be through the hatch or going into the cell to make sure they’re okay, have plenty to drink, blankets and food, others might be observed via 24/7 CCTV, others on cell watch, depending on their level of vulnerability and need.

Both response and neighbourhood teams may also help the custody teams out by doing fingerprints and gathering DNA, taking custody photos, and answering any questions the detainees may have during their stay. No matter what department you’re in here at Humberside Police, the cogs never stop turning and all our teams interlink in one way or another from cuffs to custody, and beyond.

Scunthorpe theatre’s ambition to be accessible to all

Scunthorpe’s largest live entertainment venue, The Baths Hall, has been recognised for its commitment in becoming a place that is accessible and welcoming to all

The popular venue that welcomes thousands of people each year has been awarded the status of a Bronze Level venue on the Attitude Is Everything Charter.

Since signing up to the charter last year, a dedicated team at The Baths Hall in partnership with the Attitude Is Everything (AIE) organisation has worked to a detailed action plan to help them review and improve all areas of their customer and artist experience at the venue.

With an ambition to ensure all customers, artists, and visitors to the venue feel welcomed and looked after, they have reviewed and implemented several changes.

A snapshot of the changes include providing accessibility signage throughout the building, a

dedicated sensory/quiet space, headsets, and a full review of the venue’s access procedures.

Developments have also been made to the information that is provided on the website, the process of booking tickets and they have worked their way through the customer experience and journey within their venue.

These changes aim to make it easier for those with mobility problems, vision or hearing difficulties, neurodivergent conditions and other accessibility needs, to attend events at the venue.

The Baths Hall journey so far has been a vast, eyeopening learning experience for all venue staff and one which will continue as they aim to achieve Gold Level status.

Attitude Is Everything (AIE) is an organisation

Page 12 Scunthorpe Journal is brought to you by CreateTVT Please mention Scunthorpe Journal when calling advertisers

which supports professionals, organisations and venues in the live entertainment sector, to better understand and improve their access provisions and policies.

Alex Covell, Live Events Access Manager for Attitude Is Everything said: “Congratulations to The Baths Hall in joining the Live Events Access Charter as a Bronze Venue!

“It has been fantastic to work with them and see the development of practice across their site, website and with the knowledge in the staffing team.

“It’s clear that inclusive practice is integrated across the whole organisation, and I can’t wait to see how they continue to offer a welcoming and engaging environment for their deaf, disabled and

neurodivergent workforce, artists, and audiences.”

It is through small ripples that big waves are created and the staff at The Baths Hall are delighted to be part of the change towards how the live entertainment industry can break down barriers.

The hope is that more and more touring artists, productions and professionals in the industry will follow suit and ensure they are offering the best possible accessibility to their customers.

Scunthorpe Theatres are asking local residents what type of events and activities they would like to see being offered at both The Baths Hall and Plowright Theatre.

The feedback received will help shape their future programme.
