Banksy works to feature in exhibition coming to Scunthorpe Families will be able to enjoy rarely seen works by some of the world’s most famous artists as part of an extraordinary exhibition coming to Scunthorpe’s 20-21 Visual Arts Centre this summer The New Icons exhibition opened on 16th July and visitors have the chance to see more than 90 artworks by household names including Banksy, Tracey Emin, Damien Hirst, Kaws, Blek le Rat and many more. It is expected to be the most popular show ever seen in Scunthorpe and is the latest high-profile exhibition in the popular arts centre’s 20-year history. Cllr Rob Waltham, leader, North Lincolnshire Council, said: “To stage the New Icons exhibition, that features work by many of the biggest artists of our time, is a real privilege and incredibly exciting. “We are expecting the exhibition to bring more than 20,000 visitors into the heart of Scunthorpe town centre, many from outside the area, which will be a massive boost to the local economy, and a brilliant showcase for everything North Lincolnshire has to offer.”
Page 6
All the artworks are for sale. One of the many highlights of the exhibition is Banksy’s iconic ‘Hula Girl’, along with other paintings and over 20 prints and editions by the artist. Now removed from its original location to be preserved, ‘Hula Girl’ is painted on brickwork and is hugely complex to move. Cllr John Davison, cabinet member for safer, stronger communities – urban, said: “Over the course of 20-21’s incredible 20-year history, the gallery has continued to put North Lincolnshire on the creative map, with more than 800,000 visitors

flocking to see a huge variety of international installations. “These have included everything from Antony Gormley’s 40,000 terracotta figures in 2014 and stunning LEGO models in 2019’s Brick by Brick, right through to Luke Jerram’s magnificent Museum of the Moon that wowed visitors last year. “As well as these landmark exhibitions, staff work hard to make sure the art on offer is as accessible as possible. Their Get Crafty sessions for adults with additional needs are held weekly, as are the Stick and Splodge workshops for under-fives, both of which are extremely popular with local families.”
New Icons will be on display until 5th November 2022. The gallery is open Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 4pm. While entry to the venue is free, entry to the exhibition itself will be by ticket only. North Lincolnshire residents will be able to obtain free tickets. The cost of tickets for those living outside North Lincolnshire will be £8 for adults and £5 for children aged 12 and over. Free tickets will be available for children under 12. To find out more about the exhibition, and purchase tickets, visit the 20-21 Visual Arts Centre website.

FROM A POLICE Protecting your home in the warmer weather Officers from our Neighbourhood Policing Team in Hull are encouraging residents to be extra vigilant following a number of burglaries near to Leads Road, Hull
“As the warmer weather starts to take hold, we are more inclined to leave windows and even doors open. This can present thieves with an opportunity to commit crime, so we would advise closing and locking all doors and windows when you are not in the room.”
Page 10

August/September 2022 - Issue 28
E PERSPECTIVE: Burglary is an incredibly intrusive crime, often leaving victims feeling scared and vulnerable in their own home. Inspector Jamie Campbell said: “The neighbourhood teams in our area are out and about speaking and offering advice to residents to help people protect their homes by making them less appealing to those looking to commit crime. “As the warmer weather starts to take hold, we are more inclined to leave windows and even doors open. This can present thieves with an opportunity to commit crime, so we would advise closing and locking all doors and windows when you are not in the room. “I would urge anyone with information about those committing offences to get in touch. Similarly, please call us if you see something suspicious. It may not seem like much at the time, but it might be the missing piece of the jigsaw that enables us to take action.” Help protect your home from burglary: • Make sure your doors and windows are closed and locked when you’re not in the room. Nearly half of all burglaries are the result of a door or window being open • During the warmer months, try to shut windows that could be accessible to opportunist thieves • Make sure nothing of value (including car keys) is left on show to tempt thieves into your property • Think about fitting a burglar alarm and security lighting – both to your home and outbuildings. It may be expensive, but they are very effective deterrents and can bring down your insurance costs
• Make sure sheds and garages have good quality locks and hinges Consider fitting deterrents in the garden like movement-sensitive floodlights, as these will leave thieves feeling exposed • Report any suspicious activity by calling 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 • If there is an emergency or a crime in progress dial 999 • To assist the police in recovering and returning stolen property, register your valuables on http:// www.immobilise.com If you are spending some time away from home, visiting family and friends or on holiday, don’t leave your house looking unoccupied: • Leave curtains and blinds open – nothing reveals that a house is unoccupied so much as curtains drawn during the day • Cancel milk and newspapers and any other regular deliveries • Don’t tell everyone you’re on holiday, but ask a neighbour to remove free newspapers and post from your doormat if they can be seen through a glass panel or through the letterbox • Install a light on a timer switch that comes on in the evening • Keep valuables out of sight and don’t leave them where they can be seen through a window For more handy advice visit: www.humberside. police.uk/protect-your-home

Local radio station entertaining listeners all round Scunthorpe Did you know there is a local radio station here in Scunthorpe that is a huge hit with its listeners. Steel FM is a Community Radio Station for Scunthorpe, Winterton, Brigg, Kirton in Lindsey, Barton, Crowle, Epworth and the surrounding villages The radio station started broadcasting in March 2020 and celebrated two years on air on 18th March, however, it is currently available over the internet only. Scunthorpe Journal had a chat with Marco Bolli, Operations Director, to find out more about the radio station and why it stands out. “We believe in putting local back into local radio as we seem to have lost the localness from radio these days.
“We believe in supporting local businesses and the local community, we are a not-for-profit organisation and are staffed by volunteers. “As we are a community radio station, under the licencing laws from Ofcom only 50% of our income can come from selling advertising and sponsorship. The other 50% has to come from fundraising and donations to the station, so any help would be appreciated in either revenue for advertising/sponsorship or in the form of a donation to the station.
With the station being in the heart of the community and engaging with the locals too, we are looking at connecting with local community projects, organisations and businesses within North Lincolnshire. “Currently we are getting
