INTRODUCTION Hello and welcome to your December/January edition of Scunthorpe Journal. And just like that we are now coming to the end of 2023! Christmas is just around the corner and we hope this year has been a brilliant one for you. December brings lots of festive celebrations so we hope you get to spend some quality time with your friends and family. As we enter the new year, along come the cold nights where we look forward to home-cooked warm meals and getting all cosy in front of the fire.
In this edition, we let our readers know about a new cocktail bar coming to Scunthorpe. Not only will there be an array of fancy cocktails on offer but also mini golf and an escape room! We also share the fantastic news that North Lincolnshire Council has won a national award for its care-worker recruitment campaign. We will see you again in 2024, but for now sit back with a cuppa and enjoy your latest instalment of Scunthorpe Journal.

New cocktail bar opens in Scunthorpe There is a new bar in town, and not only does it serve up drinks, it also offers mini golf and an escape room! The Paint Shop is the newest addition to Scunthorpe and is bound to be hugely popular with local residents. Scunthorpe Journal had a chat with the owner, Christopher Shaw to find out more about the bar and what it offers. How did the idea come about? I currently own the escape rooms on Mary Street. The current venue was only big enough to house two escape rooms so I’ve been looking for
somewhere bigger for a while. When the building on Ashby High Street became available I jumped at the opportunity. We now have a venue where we can fit three or four new escape rooms, and with loads of extra space, it seemed like somewhere to drink was a good fit for the customers. With still a lot of space available, and keeping within the family entertainment theme, themed adventure mini golf also seemed like a good.
What was the biggest challenge? No doubt the biggest challenge was obtaining the licence to sell alcohol. With countless meetings, and plenty of hoops to jump through, with various different organisations and local residents, it was certainly a challenge. What are you most proud of?

Although it’s not 100% complete, I’m very proud of how it has turned out. From the shell of an old retail unit to a beautiful, picturesque, relaxed environment which has taken a lot of hard work, time and help. What can people expect when they visit? People can expect a safe and relaxing place to enjoy time with
their friends and family. Our prices are reasonable and our drink selection is slowly growing to a nice wide range of drinks for everyone. What exciting plans do you have for the future? So our next step (when the bar is finally finished) is to open our first escape room which will be called “The Attic”. It will be an
immersive horror themed room which we find people really like to get stuck into and embrace their fears. After this we will start work on our themed mini golf. The theme we have chosen to go with is “The Candy Shop”, with beautiful bright sets, fun music and even smells to really immerse the consumer.

FROM A POLICE Tackling crime in a response officers’ boots! This month, Scunthorpe Police talks to us about how as part of #OpShield, our response officers have been doing just that and more, as we continue to assist teams across the region to take criminals off the streets and keep communities safe
“As well as managing our dayto-day workloads, operations like OpShied allow us to support departments across the force to detect and deter criminals from every angle, and above all, ensure justice is achieved.”

December/January 2024 - Issue 36
E PERSPECTIVE: The teams deal with a whole array of different crimes and for the past eight weeks our dedicated patrol teams have teamed up with OpShield to help identify outstanding suspects and arrest those committing offences and causing harm to our communities. Following the disruption and activity in phase one, the second phase has now seen teams focus on burglary and repeat offenders as well as protecting vulnerable people by targeting perpetrators of domestic abuse. We spoke with Chief Inspector Dave Stephenson, who gave us an insight into some of the work patrol teams have been doing throughout OpShield so far: “No two days are the same working in response, and as part of OpShield my teams have been clamping down on crime to identify criminals while making our communities safer and stronger. “It could be anything from arrest attempts on wanted people, domestic violence protection order checks, prisoners to deal with and everything in between. “We also get allocated a variety of different crimes, which are those jobs that don’t necessarily get a police response at the time of being reported, but need to be further investigated, reviewed, and managed. “As well as managing our day-to-day workloads, operations like OpShield allow us to support departments across the force to detect and deter
criminals from every angle, and above all, ensure justice is achieved. “For instance, we’ve been assisting OpShield in executing warrants for those suspected of being involved in drug-related offences, as well as carrying out arrest attempts on those who are wanted in connection with causing the most harm to our communities. “These are just a few things our patrol teams have helped with over the activity period, but the work doesn’t stop there. “As well as getting requests from other departments, and even other police forces, patrol is essentially a hub for everyday business. “This includes managing jobs that the public report to us throughout the day and night. From spotting stolen vehicles, to conducting area searches, CCTV checks, searching for missing people, conducting ASB patrols and everything in between – it never stops. “We want to thank everyone who has already reported issues to us and ask that you continue to tell us about any problems in your area.” Make sure to speak to our #OpShield officers when they’re out and about, you can report any concerns about crime in your area via our non-emergency number 101, or you can direct message us via Facebook and Twitter.

Local council wins national award
Scunthorpe Journal is brought to you by CreateTVT
North Lincolnshire Council’s biggest ever care-worker recruitment campaign has won a top national award Proud to Care North Lincolnshire, which raises the profile of the vital role care workers play in our communities, fought off strong competition from four other councils across the country to win ‘Best innovation in recruitment’ at the Local Government Chronicle’s Workforce Awards in Birmingham. In a bid to attract more kind and compassionate people to become care workers the council introduced a suite Page 10
of initiatives, enabling care workers to benefit from funded childcare, electric transport from just £10 a month, discounted gym memberships and more. On top of this, an agency hub was launched to increase opportunities for flexible working, alongside a fullyfunded Introduction to Care course – where people can access in person and e-learning training and shadow care professionals to find out if care work is the right fit for them.
These forward-thinking approaches to recruitment pressures were recognised by the judges. Gordon McFarlane, President of the Public Services People Manager’s Association and Assistant Director at Leicestershire County Council, said: “The judges were highly impressed with this entry – it’s not just innovative, but it reduces inequalities, knocking barriers down, and creating solutions, for example, the Wheels to Work and funded

childcare provision - these will really help people into employment – and to stay in employment.” Councillor Richard Hannigan, cabinet member for adults and health at North Lincolnshire Council, said: “This award is a fantastic achievement for everyone involved in the delivery of adult social care across North Lincolnshire who go the extra mile to help residents stay safe, well and connected. “In the face of national
staffing pressures, the council worked closely with care providers and stepped up to deliver creative solutions that would make a positive difference to care workers’ daily lives, removing barriers to employment in the process. “Parents told us childcare costs made working in care less viable, so we introduced a funded childcare scheme. Others were keen to return to the workforce but needed flexible hours to fit around their family – so we
developed an agency bank which benefits workers and employers alike. “Collectively, these initiatives continue to be a huge support to our care workers and help even more people to discover the benefits this rewarding career has to offer.” If you are interested in a career where you can make a huge difference and where no two days are ever the same, find the latest opportunities on the Proud to Care North Lincolnshire website.
