FROM A POLICE Reducing crime and ASB in Scunthorpe Town Centre

E PERSPECTIVE: Local Neighbourhood PC Kal Alcock-Murtagh talks about how the neighbourhood policing team is tackling crime in the area As a team, we love to get out and about and talk to local residents, businesses and visitors about all the great things in Scunthorpe. We are always keen to hear about anything that is causing concern for the community so that, where appropriate, we can take action to address it.
Shop theft is another concern that businesses regularly talk to us about and I am pleased to share that an innovative trial of how evidence is collected has seen a reduction of 36% in recorded shop theft in the third quarter of 2019.
One thing that has been flagged to us recently is antisocial behaviour (ASB) in Scunthorpe town centre. This is why the neighbourhood policing team has been working hard to identify those involved and take steps to reduce incidents of this nature.
Town centre businesses are regular victims of shop theft now have access to “fill-in-theblank statements and evidence labels so they can get evidence together as soon as a theft has taken place. This enables us to put suspects before the courts as quick as possible, reducing the opportunity for them to potentially commit further offences.
We will be continuing to focus on these areas as part of our patrols whilst also working with the Youth Outreach Team and Youth Offending Services to find more suitable activities to entertain teenagers in the area.
We are incredibly proud to be part of this vibrant community and we are committed to continuing to working with you to make sure that Scunthorpe stays a fantastic place to live, work and visit.
North Lincolnshire Council, who also have a role in tackling anti-social behaviour such as begging, has seen a 32% drop in reports of anti-social behaviour this year compared to the previous 12 months.

Popular Scunthorpe playing field receives £100,000 funding Healey Road Playing Field in Scunthorpe will undergo refurbishments after almost £100,000 funding was allocated to improve accessibility North Lincolnshire Council will be investing £12,000 into the project and has secured a further £87,936 of funding from FCC Communities Foundation. FCC Communities Foundation is a not-for-profit business that awards grants for community, conservation and heritage projects. The work started in early November and the funding is being used to create a footpath, install more seating and litter bins, and upgrade and replace play equipment. Scunthorpe Journal got in touch with North Lincolnshire Council to find out more about the project. Cllr Rob Waltham, leader of North Lincolnshire Council, said: “Making sure all of our parks and open spaces in North Lincolnshire are accessible for all is a key priority, and this funding will allow
Page 12
developments to be carried out at Healey Road Playing Field. We have worked with Warley Road Community Group to apply for the funding and their support has been vital in getting to this point.” The aim is to create a community park that will be used by everyone who lives in the area and there are ongoing plans for further developments.” Penny Horne, FCC Communities Foundation grant manager for the Humber, says: “We’re delighted to be supporting the Healey Road Community Park Scheme project and pleased our funding will benefit so many people across the North Lincolnshire region. We are always happy to consider grant applications for projects that improve local communities and we’re looking forward to both of these making a difference very soon.”

Fundraisers from across Scunthorpe and beyond have been supporting a charity-run hospice over the past few months Every year, its dedicated team of staff and volunteers touch the lives of hundreds of local people, either directly as patients, or by supporting family members or carers, before, during and after one

of the most difficult times in their lives. Lindsey Lodge Hospice Head of Fundraising Tom Moody said: “We are a truly local charity, supporting North Lincolnshire patients and families, and we
wouldn’t be able to do what we do without the amazing support of people who choose to fundraise for us. “Whether it’s jumping out of a plane, running a marathon, buying a lottery ticket, or holding

a bake sale – every single penny they raise helps us to provide our care.” Here are just a selection of highlights: North Lincolnshire Council worker Jenny Dale (36) completed the gruelling London Marathon in just four hours, 15 minutes and 36 seconds
Scarborough man Ray Clarke (68) departed from Windermere on Saturday 1 June on a gruelling 97-mile walk over just six days to follow in the footsteps of British fell walker, guidebook author and illustrator Alfred Wainwright MBE. He raised £1,500 for the hospice which is caring for his good friend, and former Army colleague of 52 years, Chas Dowie. Ian Espin (92), who has four children, four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, made and sold beautiful bird boxes and
donated £1,377 to Lindsey Lodge Hospice to say thank you for the wonderful care his wife Margaret received there before she passed away in October 2018. An annual cycling challenge taken on by staff from the UK’s largest independent lime producer has raised £8,000 in five years for Lindsey Lodge Hospice. The bike rides take nine months to plan, so as soon as one is out the way, Steve and Jo Price start planning next year’s ride, which will be Stockport to Hornsea in 2020.
