December/January 2022 - Issue 24

E PERSPECTIVE: This month, Shane Jackson from Humberside Police updates us on the latest policing priorities and what 2022 holds for the team We have now run 19 separate passive drug dog operations in the last 10 months (January to October) and searched a total of 246 people under section 23 misuse of drugs act (MDA). In addition to this officers have submitted hundreds of intelligence report, every deployment has been posted on the Humberside Police Facebook/Twitter feeds and information has been sent out on My Community Alert. The launch of national anti-knife crime week shows how police forces across the country are intensifying efforts to tackle knife crime. Operation Sceptre looked at key themes such as prevention and education and officers will carry out targeted operations alongside partner agencies. It’s more important than ever that forces are brought together to remind the public that police are targeting serious violence. Going forward • Scunthorpe proactive (plain clothes) team are now working with us to increase our proactive capability by using different tactics including bicycles. • On one of the deployments we used off-road motorcycles to attempt to stop illegal motorcycles including the suspects who are moving drugs around on motorcycles.

• We have contacted British Transport Police county lines proactive unit and am liaising with them regarding a joint operation covering the town centre including the train station, date TBA. Power BI shows that all other crimes within the town ward have reduced YTD except drugs offences however, this was to be expected by operating this sort of operation. Police will again partner with Border Force nationally to monitor attempts to import weapons and will also work locally with schools and community members offering engagement and prevention advice to young people. Early intervention remains a key part as forces look to identify and tackle the root causes of knife crime, with an aim of discouraging young people from carrying knives. Police continue to work closely with retailers and Trading Standards, including retailers that operate online, to ensure weapons are kept off our streets. Putting aside significant falls in violence during lockdown periods, offences involving knives have been rising in recent years, however the determined work taking place across all forces has slowed that rate of increase.

Scunthorpe Hospital first in to use renewable heating sys Scunthorpe General will be the first NHS hospital in England to use renewable geothermal power for its heating and hot water, helping to reduce the hospital’s carbon footprint by 60% Work on the groundbreaking new system started on November 8th and is part of a £40.3million programme of works across the Trust’s sites in

Scunthorpe, Grimsby and Goole. Across the Trust, the works are expected to save £1,012,653 and 5,036.83 tons of carbon every year – that’s the equivalent of

300 typical UK households. Director of Estates and Facilities and Programme Director, Jug Johal, said: “By taking our heat directly from the ground, we will be able to remove our old, inefficient stream boilers, which will play a large part in reducing our carbon footprint on our Scunthorpe site by approximately 60%. “This is really important to us, as we’re not just here for you when you become ill – we want to help to prevent illness in the first place – and poor environmental health is known to contribute to a number of major diseases, including cardiac problems, asthma and cancer.

“In addition to the new heating system, we are also installing more energy efficient LED lighting, improving our windows and insulation, adding additional solar panels and upgrading our Building Management Systems.”

to minimise the impact on our patients and our neighbours.

In the coming weeks, boreholes for the new ground-source heat pumps will be drilled in up to four locations across the site – two off Church Lane and, potentially, two off Cliff Gardens.

“We’ve also written to those living in close proximity to the hospital site to let them know about our plans and to encourage them to get in touch with us if they have any questions or concerns.”

Mr Johal added: “Although the drilling equipment is not particularly loud – it’s estimated to be about the level you would hear in your car whilst in city traffic – we are doing all we can

“We will be carrying out regular noise impact assessments, both before and during construction, and making adjustments where necessary.

Unfortunately, in order to carry out the works safely, the trust will need to close off 53 public parking spaces on the Church Lane side of the site.

Mr Johal said: “We appreciate that being able to park close by is something that’s very important to our patients and visitors and apologise for the short-term disruption these works will cause. “In order to maximise the parking available on the site, we have scheduled these works to start following the completion of the new decked car parking area, which has 91 spaces available for public use. “Alternatively, you could use our popular Park and Ride service from Scunthorpe town centre, to help us prioritise our on-site parking for those who need it most.”

North Lincolnshire comm Armed Forces past and p For many people, Remembrance Sunday is a time to remember those who fought for the great world we have today. Due to the pandemic last year, many Remembrance Sunday parades were unable to take place, meaning this year was extra special Many people may have tuned in to watch the national parade, however, many local residents paid a visit to the Baths Hall to watch our local Armed Forces and celebrate the brilliant work they do. North Lincolnshire honoured the fallen at this year’s

This year, the parade took place at the Baths Hall, Doncaster Road, Scunthorpe at 10.10am.
