Hello and welcome to your December/ January edition of Scunthorpe Journal.

Christmas is just around the corner, and we hope you are all getting into the festive spirit. We cannot believe that 2022 is nearly over! Here at Scunthorpe Journal, we have had a great year helping so many businesses get their name out there as well as sharing some feel-good stories about what is happening in the local area.

We are well into the the colder months now and we hope everyone is coping with the rising energy bills. Our community needs to come together now more than ever to help one another in any way they can.

This month we feature some great things

happening in the community such as a new garden dedicated to fostering which pays tribute to existing carers and hopefully persuades more people to get into fostering. As well as that, a new safe space located on the second floor of St John’s Market will provide parents with a discreet area to feed their babies and aims to support breastfeeding mothers to confidently feed their babies in public.

New garden in Scunthorpe promises a ‘bright and blossoming future’ for fostering

Young people have helped council staff plant a new garden dedicated to fostering

The flower bed, in Kingsway Gardens, pays tribute to existing carers and it is hoped it will persuade more people to come forward as foster carers.

A group of young people in foster care spent time with the Parks and Green Spaces Team at North Lincolnshire Council during the summer helping plant flowers for the new feature. They will also help maintain the installation.

Cllr Rob Waltham, leader, North Lincolnshire Council, said: “There are few things more fulfilling than becoming a foster carer, and this garden pays tribute to

them and the amazing young people they are helping.

“This garden demonstrates how we are putting our Green Futures plan into action and promises a bright and blossoming future for fostering in North Lincolnshire.”

Cllr Julie Reed, cabinet member for children and families, said: “Everyone involved in the project has done a phenomenal job and involving our children and young people in foster care makes it even more special.

“It will provide them with opportunities to learn and develop their gardening skills whilst contributing to the landscape of the community.

“Foster carers are needed now more than ever to provide safe and loving homes for local children. They come from all walks of life and help make a huge difference to a young person.

“It is also an excellent example of teams within the council working together and finding new innovative ways to gain more foster carers within the local area. “

The firearms officers helping to keep you safe

“The team is regularly deployed to incidents where levels of extreme threat and physical violence are used. These incidents could include domestic abuse, public order, concerns for safety, or stolen vehicles involving individuals who pose a risk to themselves, the public and our staff.”

POLICE PERSPECTIVE:

This month, the Scunthorpe Policing team talks to us about firearms officers and the role they play in the community. They have a very particular set of skills, ones that make them a nightmare for criminals in our area

A lot of the time, when you think of policing 24 hours a day, you’re likely to picture one of our many patrol officers who respond to incidents across our area.

As well as patrol officers, another team that responds at a rapid rate are our highly skilled firearms officers who are continuously reviewed and trained all year around.

Known as our Armed Response Vehicles Officers (ARVO), they play a pivotal role in tackling and apprehending some of the most dangerous people not just in our area, but across the UK as they assist with counter terrorism and critical incident mutual aid.

The armed response team will often respond to support and work alongside many of our patrol teams across the force. Whilst you may think all of these ongoing incidents involve weapons, including firearms and improvised explosives, that isn’t always the case.

Last year alone, the team responded to 3,316 incidents involving violent circumstances.

The team is regularly deployed to incidents where levels of extreme threat and physical violence are used. These incidents could include domestic abuse, public order, concerns for safety, or stolen vehicles involving individuals who pose a risk to themselves, the public and our staff.

Whilst incidents of our officers discharging a firearm as a part of ongoing incidents remain very rare, the specialist training they receive - alongside their presence generally - means ongoing incidents are brought to a safe conclusion. It also helps reduce the number of members of the public and/or police officers that may be injured or assaulted.

All of our armed officers are Tac Med trained, meaning they’re equipped and trained at advance levels to deal with and assist the ambulance teams with medical emergencies and save countless lives. Alongside tackling crime in our area, the team works closely with varying partners across our region patrolling the docks and the airport to ensure the safety of those travelling, as well as businesses distributing goods as a part of the national counter-terrorism plan.

Whilst you may think our firearms team looks a little imposing and perhaps unapproachable because they carry guns, they are now a more common form of officer patrols. Sometimes, our armed officers wear face coverings, but, in fact, they are always happy to engage and chat to members of our communities.

Should you see them patrolling your town centre, a local event or carrying out lines of enquiry in your neighbourhood, feel free to chat to them.

A new safe space for parents to feed their babies opens in Scunthorpe

Local mothers can now feel extremely comfortable with a dedicated area for parents to feed their babies has opened in St John’s Market in Scunthorpe town centre.

The new safe space, located on the second floor of St John’s Market, was opened as part of National Breastfeeding Week. It provides parents with a discreet area to feed their babies and aims to support breastfeeding mothers to confidently feed their babies in public.

All new parents are welcome to use the space, where they can

sit and relax in the comfortable chairs, and enjoy the soft toys, and books with their baby.

Councillor Julie Reed, cabinet member for Children and Families, said:

“Breastfeeding is one of the most natural things we can do and of great benefit to developing babies. This provides a comfortable space to do so for those that prefer not to feed in public view and is vital for new parents.”

Alison Jollands, North Lincolnshire Council’s Public Health Coordinator, said: “There are several health benefits from

breastfeeding such as helping to protect the baby from illness and infections. It can also protect mothers from breast and ovarian cancers and heart disease.

“Some mums have felt unable to feed their babies in public spaces due to the reaction of others and whilst we absolutely champion baby feeding wherever you are when your baby is hungry, we must also provide a safe place for those that prefer to do so in a private space.”

focus on RSPCA Lincolnshire North & Humber (Scunthorpe) branches

The RSPCA can be a great place to visit if you are looking to adopt a pet and give it a ‘furrever’ home!

In our local area we have a number of local RSPCAs you can visit and support. There are the Lincolnshire North & Humber (Scunthorpe) branches as well as three charity shops in Hull, Beverley and Cottingham that all raise vital funds to help make a difference to the animals they care for. These are responsible for raising funds locally to help animals in our area. Ran by local volunteers, they raise money through fundraising events, donations and legacies.

In the Scunthorpe area, there are two charity shops. One is situated at Springs Parade in Brigg by the River Ancholme. The second shop is located at 278a Ashby High St, Ashby, Scunthorpe and is also very popular receiving great interest from the public daily.

The Hull & East Riding branch is the largest investor of Animal Care in Hull and East Riding and has been for 100 years. Our 1million Animal Rescue Centre cares for animals that are sick, injured, abandoned, abused, or neglected.

PASCAL

Pascal is a young energetic rabbit with lots of love to give, he is extremely affectionate and will gladly hop up onto your lap to receive some much-demanded attention. He has a very inquisitive nature and is keen to investigate everywhere that he visits as well as everyone that he meets.

PATRICK

Before coming into our care, Patrick was a stray. To begin with, Patrick was unsure of cattery life and the humans looking after him and he was always very alert and watching what was going on around him. Now, Patrick has learnt that being stroked isn’t as scary as he once thought and he will purr happily whilst being stroked. Patrick does enjoy being brushed with a soft brush and will push himself into the brush for more. He will also play with moving stick toys and will tolerate being picked up when needed for short periods of time. Patrick’s favourite things are Dreamies and head strokes! As he can still sometimes be unsure of interactions with people, Patrick will need an understanding family who he can build up a bond with.

OZZIE Ozzie is a cheeky chap who arrived into our care via one of our inspectors. He loves attention and can often be found curled up on one of our volunteer’s knees after a game of fetch on our secure field.

Ozzie walks nicely on a lead and does not react to other dogs when out on a walk. We believe with a careful introduction at our centre he may be able to live with another dog of a similar size. He would prefer not to live with cats or other small furries. We believe that Ozzie could live with children over the age of 10 years.
