E PERSPECTIVE:

Scunthorpe Urban Policing Team We are the Scunthorpe Urban Community Policing Team and we cover the town, Crosby, Frodingham and Brumby Wards. As the Sergeant for the Brumby and Frodingham area, I lead a dedicated team of three constables, eight PCSOs and one special constable. We know the area well and regularly patrol, however, we’re always keen to hear from the local community as their information helps us focus our attention on areas where concerns have been raised. One way in which you can do this is through Humbertalking, an initiative where we are asking people to fill in a short survey about where they live to help us shape how we police our communities. Officers, PCSOs and volunteers have begun knocking on doors in North Lincolnshire giving people the opportunity to fill in the survey. It will only take 10 minutes of your time but will really help us understand what issues are bothering you and how we can work together to

ensure that Scunthorpe stays a brilliant place to live and work. We’ve seen a great example of what can be achieved when we work with you, through the improvements in Scunthorpe town centre. We have recently issued drugs warrants and seized motorbikes and given out dispersal orders and closure notices. These are issues that you have said matter to you and I want to reassure you that we are taking action on your behalf. As the weather gets warmer you may see the team at engagement events and surgeries in your community. If you do, come and chat to us and learn more about what we do. You can also sign up for email alerts about what is going on in your area at www.mycommunityalert.co.uk If you have any information about crime please call our non-emergency number 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. In an emergency always call 999.

‘Outstanding achievement’ award for Scunthorpe local A local woman has received a prestigious award following her community work with young people in the area Karen Boothman, a child and youth worker in Scunthorpe, has been recognised for her efforts with the Riddings Brigade group. The group aims to bring young people together, inviting them to socialise and enjoy leisure time with others of a similar age. Karen, who has been working with young people for over 32 years, received the award at Lincoln Crown Court by the High Sheriff, however, admits she has ‘no idea’ who nominated her! “Honestly, I don’t know who I was nominated by or whether it was a process of elimination or if there was a long shortlist! I received a letter saying I had received the award and was consequently invited to a presentation.” Karen’s continuous work at Riddings youth centre with the ‘Reaching Riddings’ group provides a safe

Page 12

place for youngsters in the area to visit. The club runs regularly for those who wish to get involved, however, it has not always been smooth running for Karen and her volunteers. Five years ago, the club was forced to become selffunded following the council’s decision to make the youth workers redundant, making the outstanding contribution award even more meaningful to Karen. “We have a junior session once a week for 6-11 year olds, and a senior club for 11-19 year olds. The groups offer a safe environment with various activities on offer. “As for the award I am delighted of course, the last five years we have been totally self-funded which is a big achievement in itself as we have to keep fighting to raise our own money.”

FILM FEATURING LOC WINS ‘BEST BRITISH’ A

A film featuring Scunthorpe actor Naj Modak has won the ‘Best British’ award at the 2019 National Film Awards Scott and Sid was originally released on 9th March 2018, and has since received positive reviews and accolades, including the Best British Film award. Naj, who plays Omar Nanda in the film, has featured on television and film a number of times in a screen career spanning back to 2000, including appearances in Macbeth and Citizen Khan. Following his involvement in Scott and Sid, we spoke to Naj who told us all about the film, and

Page 14

what the award meant to him and the cast. “The film is a true story about triumph over adversity and is based on the real lives of filmmakers Scott Elliott and Sid Sadowskyj. They become friends at school, one is studious yet he is distracted by the other who is always in trouble. They hatch a plan to make a film but they are told they will never achieve it. They set upon a journey to raise funds by doing odd jobs, and eventually a successful business, before achieving their ultimate

AL ACTOR AWARD goal, the film Scott and Sid.” “As for the award, being nominated was amazing. It was like we’d already won. But to go on stage on TV with a bunch of stars applauding you as you try not to trip up as you walk, that was a proud moment!” Following Naj has had a long career in front of the camera, the talented actor has taken on a number of roles throughout his career, notable appearing in popular British soaps Emmerdale and Doctors. Naj has also featured in a number of internationally award-winning films, including premieres at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival. His film appearances include ‘Aurora’ and ‘Ilkley’, and Naj is set to play the character ‘Paul Jenkins’ in action/ adventure film G.O.D Tech. Aside from his acting career, Scunthorpe resident Naj volunteers his time to a number of projects, in a bid to improve the local area for its residents and promote essential services. He also runs a PR company, Modak PR.

Due to his busy schedule, Naj admitted he ‘didn’t know’ if he could attend the awards, however, rearranging his diary was a decision he was not to regret! “At first I didn’t expect us to win any awards. I think the film is brilliant. It’s a true story well made. But this was a huge awards’ ceremony with established filmmakers. As our support grew I started to think what if. “I was not sure if I would be able to attend but something said to me that I must move my diary around, we could win... I absolutely don’t know where that thought came from.” “I was always hopeful, I must admit. I thought that once more and more people saw the film it would build momentum. It is hard not to relate to the storyline. We filmed it a few years ago so the awards kind of crept up on me and then we won.” “I would like to thank all those people who voted for us and sent us their good wishes, it means a lot!”

New scheme keeping patients out of hospital launches A brand-new service, which aims to keep people at home rather than in hospital, has been launched in Scunthorpe. Scunthorpe General Hospital has introduced a new OPAT (outpatient parenteral antimicrobial therapy) service, which means patients who require certain antibiotic infusions can now receive the care at an ambulatory unit or at home. Following the news that the service was to be launched, the fortunes of many patients has changed, now meaning they can receive the care they require in the comfort of their own home. One patient at Scunthorpe Hospital said: “I was not looking forward to having to put my life on hold for six weeks whilst I sat in a hospital bed having my treatment.

Page 18

“I was then told about OPAT, and it sounded like a great idea. There is no comparison, I have been able to pop into the ambulatory unit then go home. The staff have been flexible; they have always been so obliging and accommodating which is great.” The feedback towards the new OPAT service has been positive following its introduction this year. The service was trailed in 2017, where there were an estimated 744 saved hospital bed days across 57 patients – in what was a successful testing period. Now the service is in place at Scunthorpe General Hospital, employee Dr Singh has suggested patients can continue to live like normal. “Sometimes these type of treatments require the patient to stay for days and sometimes weeks. However, under OPAT, patients can continue to enjoy their everyday lives.”

SUMMER BRAIN DRAIN Whilst our children are having fun over the summer holidays, it is common for their attention to drop in the period they are away from school. Kip McGrath, however, are on hand to offer some helpful advice for the summer months The weeks have flown by, Wimbledon has started, exams have been sat, and sports days and summer fairs are fast approaching.

What can we do to help?

Parents’ evenings and end-of-year reports are over, and teachers and students breathe a sigh of relief as the summer holidays are nearly here. Time to relax, watch TV, play on the PlayStation, cycle, enjoy the beach and take life much slower... but what happens to children’s learning over the summer holidays?

the holidays and make them fun. Encourage them

Experience and research shows that for most students the long summer break results in their attainment dropping so that when they return to school in September their learning has not stood still, but they have actually lost two to six months. For children who find learning difficult or are reluctant leaners they will feel apprehensive about returning to school in September.

Page 20

Ensure that children engage in learning tasks in to continue with reading, spelling, time tables and other Maths activities. For parents and students who feel that a professional would be of benefit to ensure the student does not lose ground in their learning over the summer holidays, if they are preparing for 11+ exams or if they need a head start for the next academic year, we at Kip McGrath Scunthorpe are running summer lessons for students aged five to 18. We offer a wide range of programmes and would be happy to discuss your requirements.
