INTRODUCTION Hello and a very warm welcome to your June/July edition of Scunthorpe Journal!

Lindsey Lodge’s 30th birthday celebrations and how you can get involved with the celebrations!

Summer is here and we hope you have lots of wonderful plans with family and friends. At the start of the month, the Queen’s Jubilee took centre stage. We saw many street parties happening in our area, and it was great to see the community coming together to celebrate.

We also feature the winners of this year’s 2022 Northern Lincolnshire Business Awards that were held at Grimsby Auditorium on Friday 13th May. The ceremony celebrates the best businesses in the local area.

As always, we love to hear the excellent work you are doing and if you have a special someone who deserves a mention, please pop us a message so we can feature them in the next edition.

If your business would like more information about how you or your business can be featured in the magazine, get in touch with a member of our friendly team who will be happy to help.

This month, we tell our readers about

We will see you again in August!

North Lincolnshire to benefit from round of fully funded wildlife pon Since their appointment by Natural England three years ago, Sheffield-based environmental consultancy Wildscapes CIC have delivered nearly 200 ponds across North Lincolnshire, Yorkshire and Derbyshire. Due to continued success, a further 20 ponds will be created within North Lincolnshire this year The work forms part of the Natural England led District Level licensing scheme for great crested newts (GCN). This new scheme in North Lincolnshire means that when a proposed development is likely to impact on GCN habitat, developers now have the option of a quicker and simpler alternative to the traditional GCN mitigation licence. Since its launch last year, the scheme has not only benefitted developers in terms of certainty on costs and timescales, but has provided multiple new ponds for the benefit of GCN. During the 20th century, half of the UK’s ponds were lost, primarily due to the change in land use away from mixed farming, and the remaining ponds are considered to be in a poor state. This has been

Page 6

identified as the key factor in the decline of GCN populations. Not only does the District Level licensing scheme aid the development process, it aims to secure the long-term protection of this species and their habitat. As the habitat delivery partner for the region, Wildscapes CIC aims to create new ponds in the most suitable locations to allow the newts to thrive. This is done through consultation with Natural England’s identified strategic opportunity areas, local knowledge and GCN records. Ponds are constructed within close proximity to known GCN populations and ideally in between several different GCN populations to promote breeding. Paul Jarman, Pond Programme Manager for Wildscapes CIC, comments: ‘We are delighted

that the scheme is off to a great start in North Lincolnshire and that there is a need for more ponds so soon. We have received a huge amount of interest from landowners across the region offering their land to support the creation of GCN habitat and from those looking to play their

part in the preservation of this protected species’. Wildscapes CIC are now seeking more farmers and landowners in North Lincolnshire who would like to have these habitats created or restored on their land. Wildscapes CIC will carry out all pond creation/restoration

works (including adding suitable fencing if required) and all landowners are asked to do is to take a few basic measures to protect the habitat quality of the pond. These ponds are required to be a minimum size of 150m2 and Wildscapes CIC will carry out maintenance and monitoring

visits on a periodic basis over 25 years. Interested parties are encouraged to contact Wildscapes CIC to discuss potential sites for consideration. More information can be found here; https:// wildscapes.co.uk/pond-creation

FROM A POLICE

Decrease in crime rates across the region This month, Scunthorpe Police talks to our readers about how the Office for National Statistics (ONS) has revealed that crime in our area has decreased, according to the most recent recorded crime figures (to December 2021)

“Humberside’s crime has reduced again this year, at a time when the nationally there has been an increase. A large part of this achievement is undoubtedly due to our increased visibility, and our ongoing commitment to ensuring our communities feel safe and protected.”

Page 10

Please mention Scunthorpe Journal when calling advertisers

June/July 2022 - Issue 27

E PERSPECTIVE: The report found that: - Humberside Police crime has decreased by 2.2% against a national average of a 6.5% increase. - Sexual offences have dropped by 2.9% across Humberside against an average of 21.7% increase nationally.

The proactive nature of Operation Galaxy has seen Humberside Police take the front foot when tackling drugs-related offences, ensuring that the region remains an undesirable place for those looking to trade illegal substances.

- Theft offences decreased by 14% across the board, with thefts from a person increasing by 4.8%, burglary down by 24.6%, vehicle offences down by 20.2% and shoplifting down by 15.8%.

ACC Downs added: “During the last 12 months, our Operation Galaxy team continues to work tirelessly to ensure that those involved in drugs related offences are dealt with. Through daily warrants, searches and arrests, the teams have effectively reduced the impact that drugs are having on our communities, and we can clearly see the results of that in the figures released today.”

On the data, Assistant Chief Constable Darren Downs said: “I’m pleased to report that Humberside’s crime has reduced again this year, at a time when the nationally there has been an increase. A large part of this achievement is undoubtedly due to our increased visibility, and our ongoing commitment to ensuring our communities feel safe and protected.

The report also observed a reduction in sexual crimes (down by 2.9%) with the latest awareness campaign Get Consent continuing to prove successful. The ‘Get Consent’ campaign reminds people to ask for consent when enjoying the night-time economy. The campaign was rolled out across social media and across all night-time venues in the region last year.

“We’ve seen burglary reduce by 24.6%, which we’re particularly pleased by. Offences of this nature have a huge impact on the victims, as they can leave them fearing for their safety, often in their own home, so to see declining crime rates is a great achievement. We continue to run various awareness campaigns relating to burglary which helps us ensure that the rates remain low.”

Summarising the report, Deputy Chief Constable, Paul Anderson said: “We are a force on the front foot and are committed to retaining control of our streets and roads, ensuring the lives of criminals and predators are difficult and uncomfortable. Our teams work tirelessly and are wholly committed in tackling criminality across the Humberside force area. The priority for us will always be to ensure our communities feel safe and protected and this data affirms that we’re doing things right and continuing to travel in the right direction.”

- Drug offences in the region have decreased by 3.1% versus a national increase of 11% decrease.

The report also highlighted that Humberside Police’s continued efforts into reducing drugrelated crime in the area remains successful with drugs offences decreasing by 3.1%.

Scunthorpe charity set to celebrate 30 years of care A North Lincolnshire Charity, which grew from a small group of fundraising sponsors to become a specialist end-of-life service, supporting thousands of local families, is set to celebrate 30 years of care Lindsey Lodge Hospice & Healthcare is planning a whole host of activities and events to mark its threedecade milestone, and is inviting supporters of all ages to join in with the celebrations, which coincide with its biggest expansion project in over 20 years. Lindsey Lodge Chief Executive Karen Griffiths said: “After five years of fundraising by the local community, our day care centre, now known as the Wellbeing Centre, was opened in 1992 by The Duchess of Norfolk.

Page 16

“Ten years later, in 2002, Her Majesty the Queen and Prince Philip cut the ribbon on our 10-bed Inpatient Unit. Here in 2022, we’re delighted to be opening six brand new beds, as well as piloting a 24/7 palliative care advice line, called ‘The Butterfly Line’. This really demonstrates how we’ve responded to the growing need for our specialist services over the years.” The Burringham Road-based charity has launched a ‘Cheers for 30 years!’ campaign, with an ambitious £300k target, which aims to encourage local

people to get involved with the birthday celebrations and help raise the much-needed funds required to run its services. To provide some inspiration, its Fundraising Team have published a ‘30 ways to support Lindsey Lodge guide’ on its website and social media channels. There is also a family-friendly festival-style ‘Big Birthday Bash’ event on Saturday 18th June on Lindsey Lodge’s events field behind the Hospice building. It will feature a DJ and live music, dog show, children’s games,

food and retail stalls, as well as a licensed beer tent. Karen added: “This event is a celebration of all we have achieved together, and a chance for us to celebrate 30 years of care, as well as saying a huge thank you to everyone – including former staff and volunteers - who have helped and supported us to deliver it. Registration is also now open for Lindsey Lodge Hospice & Healthcare’s iconic 30th Anniversary Glow Walk which is taking place on September 9th. Lindsey Lodge Fundraising

Manager Kirsty Walker said: “Our Glow Walk is one of the best-loved mass participation events in our calendar, with over 450 people taking part last year, and as it’s our birthday year, we’re aiming for it to be even bigger and better than ever!” She added: “As well as our 10mile route, we’ve introduced a shorter five-mile route, to encourage as many people as

possible to get involved and experience the very special atmosphere that the Glow Walk evening brings.” Full details about all of Lindsey Lodge’s activities and services are available online at www. lindseylodgehospice.org.uk, email llh.enquiries@nhs.net, or by phoning the Fundraising Team on 01724 270835.
