promoting the positive side of SCUNTHORPE and surrounding areas INTRODUCTION
Hello there and welcome to the October/November edition of Scunthorpe Journal.
September was a sad month as we laid Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II to rest. Scunthorpe Journal would like to thank the Queen for carrying out her duties till the very end, over seven decades.
As we now enter the colder months, we hope everyone is coping with the rising energy bills. Now, more than ever, our community needs to come together to help one another
in any way they can. However, the winter months also bring great occasions such as Halloween, Bonfire Night and, of course, Christmas.
As always, if you have a story you would like featuring in the magazine or would like to have your business promoted, get in touch with a friendly member of our team who will be more than happy to help!
So for now, sit back with a cuppa and enjoy your latest edition of Scunthorpe Journal.
We will see you again in December.

Council leader welcomes Government cost plans to help families and protect
A raft of measures to limit energy bills for homes and businesses for up to two years has been welcomed by the leader of North Lincolnshire Council.
The country’s new Prime Minister Liz Truss announced plans which will see families in North Lincolnshire save an anticipated £1,000 on their energy bills.
The Energy Price Guarantee will supersede the previously announced Ofgem price cap which would have seen energy costs increased by more than 80% on 1 October.
The move is in addition to the £400 support already announced, and the Council Tax Energy Rebate previously paid out.
Councillor Rob Waltham said: “The rising cost of energy has been a matter of great concern for many residents across North Lincolnshire, particularly pensioners and other people on fixed incomes.
“These proposals will offer a great deal of comfort, and warmth, to thousands of families here in North Lincolnshire.”
The proposals – which will be ratified through emergency legislation – also included support for park home residents, schools and colleges. Businesses will also have their energy costs capped for at least six months.
Councillor Waltham added: “Many business will now be given a reprieve, they are the lifeblood of our economy and our communities and now
Winter is here and energy bills are going to be a huge concern for many of us. However, the Government has stepped in to help families across North Lincolnshire
Government fuel protect jobs
this support will help them through the coming months. This announcement will protect jobs here in North Lincolnshire.
“While this immediate support will make a huge difference to bills, we should continue to make every effort to be more efficient in our use of energy.
“There are a great many things which can be done by homeowners to reduce their consumption.”
While the immediate support announced is expected to reduce the cost of energy, the council are urging people to continue to try and reduce their energy consumption.
And, don’t forget, the award-winning scheme that kept 163 North Lincolnshire homes warm last winter is also rolling out its third phase to residents.
The Government-funded Green Homes Grants has a £1.6million spending pot to help low-income households save money and stay warm. Last winter, 163 homes benefited from the grants – resulting in an overall potential annual energy
savings bill of £24,363, as well as 153.5 tons of carbon.
This aligns with the Council’s Green Future strategy, which is committed to cutting carbon and building a sustainable North Lincolnshire.
Representatives from YES Energy Solutions Ltd, the Council’s delivery partner for the Green Home Grants scheme, will be in the following areas:
Lilac Avenue
Ivanhoe Road
Hampton Road
Amos Crescent
St. Lawrence Place
Annes Crescent
Eastfield Road
St Margaret’s Walk
Axholme Road
Foxhills Road
Brocklesby Road
Brandon Road
Merlin Road
Bridges Road
Somerby Road
Messingham Road
Councillor Waltham added: “This is a substantial amount of Government money that will be used to keep people safe, warm and well this winter.
“It is especially welcome at a time when energy prices are rising, and low-income households are especially hard-hit. This will have a really positive impact on people’s lives.”
FROM A POLICE
Burglary crime prevention
This month, officers are investigating several burglaries that have happened across our force area recently
‘Many burglaries happen between midnight and 4am when most car and homeowners are sound asleep in bed, but there are steps that you can take to protect your property’
advertisers
POLICE PERSPECTIVE:
We know that burglary is an incredibly intrusive crime, often leaving victims feeling scared and vulnerable in their own home.
Detective Sergeant Andy Bradley said: “In recent weeks we have had a number of burglaries reported to us and some of them where cars are stolen after the keys have been taken in house burglaries.
“In many cases the only thing to have been stolen from inside the property are the car keys, which are then used to steal the cars from outside the premises.
“Many burglaries happen between midnight and 4am when most car and homeowners are sound asleep in bed, but there are steps that you can take to protect your property.
“Keep your car safe and secure, ideally in a locked and alarmed garage. We would also recommend installing good quality CCTV and security lighting to your property as a deterrent to opportunistic burglars.
“Always keep keys out of view of windows and ensure your doors and windows remain closed and locked when not in use.
“If you see anything suspicious at all, anybody looking as though they are ‘scoping’ a property or a vehicle out, or anything out of the ordinary where you live, please contact us.
“As always if you have any information about these crimes, call us on our non-emergency 101 line, or 999 if you see a crime in progress, or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
“We are working hard to find those responsible
and bring them to justice but would always remind people to follow some simple tips to keep their property and vehicles safe.
“If you see anyone acting suspiciously call us on 101 or call 999 if a crime is in progress.
“Always double-check your car is physically secure and alarmed, especially when using keyless locking systems and keep keys out of sight inside your property; don’t leave near doors, windows or out on worktops.
General car crime prevention advice
• If you have a garage, keep your car in it when it is not being used.
• If you don’t have a garage, park your car as close to your property as possible to make access difficult.
• Where possible, block your car in with another vehicle or a driveway parking post which would mean the vehicle couldn’t be driven away.
• Install CCTV and a motion sensor security light covering the area where your vehicle is kept.
• Check and make sure that no valuables are left in sight in the vehicle.
Keyless crime prevention advice
• Use a blocking pouch (Faraday Bag) for your key
• Turn off the keyless fob’s wireless signal.
• Use a steering wheel lock or car alarm - most modern car thieves are equipped with laptops rather than hand tools.
• Re-programme your keys - If you buy a secondhand vehicle, there is a risk that you may not be given all of the sets of car keys.
Scunthorpe doctors take part in cricket match to raise funds for Scunthorpe Hospital
A massive £517.40 was raised on the day and that will go towards improving patient experience in the new Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) ward and Integrated Acute Assessment Unit (IAAU) currently being built, which will provide vital services for patients.
The event was a huge success and took place at Heslam Park in Scunthorpe. It was a great family fun day out with food, a bouncy castle, music and a raffle. Dr Satpal Singh Shekhawat,
Interim Clinical Lead at North Lincolnshire Health and Care Partnership, was one of the organisers.
He said: “We had 11 players on each team, made up of 22 clinicians. The match lasted for about five hours.
“We had lots of raffle prizes donated by supermarkets and donations have already come in from my GP surgery. It’s great we are able to raise money for facilities to improve patient experience at the hospital. “We first started doing the cricket match in 2019 and last
year we raised funds for the new Emergency Care departments being built at Scunthorpe and Grimsby hospital.
“It’s a great day out and a good chance for us all to get together and let off some steam. The evening training sessions have been very good for our mental wellbeing.”
The money raised goes to The Health Tree Foundation, which the the working name of the Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust charitable funds and other associated charities. To donate to
