Local NHS safeguarding team shortlisted for national award Scunthorpe’s safeguarding team is down to the final three in the Safety Improvement through Technology category in the Health Service Journal (HSJ) Patient Safety Awards The HSJ Patient Safety Awards help drive improvements in culture and quality across the NHS. These awards recognise and reward the hard-working teams and individuals who, in these times of austerity, pay restraints and workforce shortages, are striving to deliver improved patient care. The safeguarding team, caring for patients at Scunthorpe hospital as well as some community services, has been shortlisted for a national award.

everything we do. As an organisation, we have a responsibility to safeguard our patients, protecting and supporting those at risk of abuse or neglect. Our safeguarding team provides guidance to colleagues to ensure they consistently and conscientiously apply the principles of safeguarding. The service covers North Lincolnshire, North East Lincolnshire, East Riding and Lincolnshire.

The team, from Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust, is down to the final three in the Safety Improvement through Technology category in the Health Service Journal (HSJ) Patient Safety Awards.

“Alongside their IT colleagues, the team has been shortlisted following a project to transform our safeguarding referral process. Historically, there was a different approach for each area and now, following the introduction of our new, bespoke, electronic referral process, we are seeing so many benefits for patients and staff.

Chief Nurse, Ellie Monkhouse, explains: “The wellbeing of those we care for is at the heart of

“The new process is fully electronic and synced with patient records enabling healthcare

colleagues to make direct referrals. Referrals can also now be tracked by any staff member caring for the patient, and not just the original referrer. We are engaging more with our patients as we’re understanding and documenting their preferred outcomes and the discharge team can check for any safeguarding issues that may be relevant before the patient is sent home.” The new approach to safeguarding referrals has been adopted across the whole organisation and is completed using WebV – our electronic patient record system. As part of the rollout, the safeguarding team have provided bespoke training sessions to our Emergency Department staff, community

teams and other areas. It’s allowing the team to collect data more easily on the referrals being made and the outcomes, which in turn will help to further improve the service and staff knowledge. Ellie added: “The local authorities have reported an improvement in the quality of referrals, making them easier to triage. The team and I are thrilled with the success of this work, proud of our colleagues for supporting this change and even more so to be shortlisted for a HSJ Patient Safety Award.” We wish the team the best of luck and a huge thank you for all you do to help safeguard our local community.

FROM A POLICE Do you suspect something isn’t quite right at a property within your area? This month, Scunthorpe Police talks to us about how officers in its Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking (MSHT) team are cracking down on pop-up brothels in our area

“These brothels are often on streets surrounded by unwitting families. However, some of those neighbours might have noticed something that is not quite right but may be unaware it is a brothel. They may also fail to report it out of simply getting the wrong end of the stick.”

Page 10

October/November 2023 - Issue 35

E PERSPECTIVE: Does it seem like there are always new people moving in, or does the property have frequent visitors who don’t stay for a long time? DS Richard Kirk of the MSHT team said: “Pop-up brothels exist in our area, and we are hoping our support of the Sexual Exploitation Intensification period this September will bolster awareness around what to look out for, and to encourage people to report suspicious activity to us. “Our objective is to safeguard people from sexual exploitation and to raise awareness that people are being forced into providing sexual services for the financial benefit of others. “We are not looking to prosecute the victims of these crimes, the exploited women. “This is happening on streets right across our force area and causes immense misery. “Many of the women being exploited are trafficked from eastern Europe or Asia. “These brothels are often on streets surrounded by unwitting families. However, some of those neighbours might have noticed something that is not quite right but may be unaware it is a brothel. They may also fail to report it out of simply getting the wrong end of the stick. “We would encourage anyone who has suspicions to report them to us on our non-emergency number 101, 999 in an emergency, or independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 if you wish to remain anonymous. This specific intelligence allows us to target properties directly and safeguard the women involved.

“With the assistance of our communities, we can work to safeguard women who are exploited sexually.” There are several signs which could indicate a pop-up brothel is being run: • Limited activities usually associated with new people moving into a property (e.g. no removals) • Limited, or scarcely furnished, appears no one actually living there • Multiple women living at the address, or who may be brought to and taken from the address • Multiple vehicles visiting the property • Many frequent visitors, usually male, who don’t stay for long periods of time Andrew Smith, Coordinator of the Humber Modern Slavery Partnership added: “Working in partnership is the most effective way of tackling modern slavery. “Through the Humber Modern Slavery Partnership, over 60 organisations across Humberside are working closely together to tackle all forms of Modern slavery including sexual exploitation. “Not only do we work to disrupt serious and organised crime or individuals exploiting others for gain, but we also work across the region to safeguard at-risk adults and children and ensure those affected by modern slavery are protected.” Note: The Humber Modern Slavery Partnership is funded by the office of the police and crime commissioner through a joint bid by all four Community Safety Partnerships in Humberside.

Rock around a real Chr It’s never too early to start thinking about the festive season and there is nothing better than having a real Christmas tree in your home. Why not pick your own this year and get the perfect one for you?

Andy Broom’s Christmas trees allow you to pick your own tree for the festive season and we had a chat with the team to find out more. Tracey, who supports her husband Andy in the business, told us: “After moving to Hope House, Goxhill Road, Barrow upon Humber in 2012 and wondering what to do with our six-acre field, we met a couple called Brian and Anne from Wales during a holiday in Portugal who told us “you need to grow Christmas trees, that’s what we do”. In September 2013 we did just that! With a little help from Jim

next door and his trusty Fergie Tractor to help prep the ground, we then planted 8,000 Nordman Fir saplings. These are the most popular low drop variety in the UK with lovely, soft, deep green needles. “We started to sell the trees six years later in 2019 (they grow about a foot per year) and our customers have increased year on year. Last year was hugely successful. Our vision was always very clear from the start. We aim to provide a unique experience by either starting or continuing family traditions

ristmas tree this year! where memories that last for ever are made. We love seeing the excitement and happy faces and yes that’s just the adults! We get comments like ‘I’m so excited I’ve been looking forward to this all week!’ “Families come and wander through the tree plantation at their leisure, they are given a measuring pole to make sure their chosen tree will fit the space in their home perfectly. Sometimes they mark a few of the trees with their own hats and gloves going back and forth between them taking their own photos until they make their mind up. It looks really funny and makes everyone smile but it really helps them to find trees again that are in the running until they narrow it down to that perfect one. The trees are then tagged with family names until the date they want them, or some just come and choose and take away at the same time. “Once the trees are delivered the families post their

photos on our Facebook page https://www.facebook. com/andybroomschristmastrees for us to see the finished product – we just love this, it is fantastic to see them in all their glory adorned with sparkly lights and decorations.” Also for this year, the couple have opened a giftshop where customers can buy additional Christmas items. Tracey added: “We have lots of gifts available including brands such as Toasted Crumpet, Lily Flame Candles, dcuk, Lightstyle London alongside our lovely Gonks, beautiful baubles, tree stands and a few potted trees with roots. Décor and gifts galore are available on their website www.andybroomschristmastreesandgifts.store and you do not have to buy a tree to visit the cabin.” So head on down to Andy Brooms Christmas Trees this winter!
