The Rotary Club of Scunthorpe We take a look at the town’s Rotary Club and all the fantastic work it does for the community The Rotary Club of Scunthorpe was formed in 1928 and meets weekly, supporting many good causes and has over 40 members.

Scunthorpe Journal spoke to President of the club, Stephen Caldwell, to find out more about the upcoming events the club had planned: “I took over as President of the Club for 2019-20 in July from past President Lesley Slack. One of my objectives is to raise awareness of Rotary in the local community.

“The Club is looking forward to a busy period. With the eradication of the polio illness being a priority

of Rotary, we will mark World Polio Day by planting purple crocus corms in Ashby Link gardens on 26th October. We will then look forward to a good “Purple for Polio” display in the spring when they come into flower! We also aim to have crocus corms available at local businesses which members of the public will be able to “purchase” in return for a donation to support polio eradication.”

As well as World Polio Day, the club is always organising some festive events to raise funds for Rotary charities.

takes place on 17th November at the Wortley House Hotel where there will be over 20 stalls selling original craft items and gifts with a Christmas flavour, plus there will be a tombola, raffle and refreshments available.

Stephen added: “Our Festival of Christmas trees coming up in December will be our most ambitious ever. The Festival stages around 80 Christmas Trees all provided and decorated by a wide range of community groups ranging from schools to art groups to businesses. Over the last 15 years our Festival has raised almost £60,000 for Lindsey Lodge Hospice.”

Annual vintage extravaganza evening Lindsey Lodge Hospice will be holding the ticket-only charity event, which this year features vintage DJ entertainers Major Swing and Kitty and vintage and jazz songstress Natasha Harper, along with a supper at Redbourn Club, Scunthorpe on Saturday 26 October Lindsey Lodge Hospice Head of Fundraising Tom Moody said: “By day we hold our Vintage Fair with over 30 vintage stalls selling clothing, jewellery and retro homeware, including a specialist hair stylist and café serving delicious snacks and drinks – all with a fantastic soundtrack of swing music from the 30s, 40s and 50s.”

“Then from 7pm until late our guests dress up in their finest vintage outfits to dine and dance the night away – but this event is ticket only, and sells out every year – we always have a waiting list!”

Cricket club’s treble-win year

Scunthorpe Town Cricket Club U15s are celebrating an incredible treble winning season for the first time in the club’s history.

They secured the League Cup recently after beating Cleethorpes by 10 wickets. Savraj Nijjar (56no) and Dan Crew (71no) put on an unbroken partnership of 157 to lead them to an emphatic victory. The team won the League comfortably and were crowned County Champions of Lincolnshire.

Head Coach Karanjit Bansal told Scunthorpe Journal: “ This has been three years in the making.

The development the team have shown over this period has just been amazing. They have all worked so hard on their games and want to get the best out of each other. Together as a group they have been so strong, they really do care about one another and genuinely want one another to do well and

that’s what has brought success. “This season they have been magnificent, winning three trophies, being champions of Lincolnshire and then only losing one game along the way against a strong side from Nottinghamshire. They’ve been an absolute credit to the cricket club. They’re not just talented cricketers but very special individuals too.

“This is just the start of their cricket careers and I hope to see them all representing STCC for a long time. I am incredibly proud of them. They have made my job as coach so much easier and all credit goes to them. They deserve all the accolades that come their way. But as I’ve said I am hoping this is just the start for them.”
