INTRODUCTION Hello readers and welcome to your October/November edition of the Scunthorpe Journal! We can barely believe that the summer months are well and truly over but autumn brings with it lovely crisp mornings and warm woolies, which we are all for! It’s also Halloween this month, which for me signifies the start of winter - dark nights and the run-up to Christmas. How quickly has the year flown by?!

If you’d like a boost for your business in the lead up to Christmas, which for many is the busiest time of year, please do get in touch with our friendly team to see how the Scunthorpe Journal and our sister publications could help. We have worked with so many businesses this year who have truly felt the benefit of featuring in our publications.

We received such a positive response to our last issue - it’s great to show Scunthorpe’s

For now, sit back with a cuppa and enjoy this issue. We’ll see you again in December!

This edition we focus on Andrew’s Hedgehog Hospital

A prickly issue

October/November 2018 - Issue 10

Frank and Veronica Tett had their hearts stolen back in 1993 when someone knocked on their door and presented them with three baby hedgehogs that had been found in the street

Frank said: “We were known as the crazy couple who were mad about animals, which is true! Although we had handled orphan kittens, puppies and guinea pigs before we knew nothing about hedgehogs. “Luckily, only five miles away, was ‘Hedgehog Care’, a rescue centre run by Elaine Drury, and after giving us detailed instructions, we left Elaine’s with three baby hoglets less than two weeks old.” One of the hoglets died, which left a male and a female, which Frank and Veronica named Sally and Linford. A love for the prickly creatures grew and Andrew’s Hedgehog Hospital was born. They now have a triage and an A&E (the kitchen), an isolation ward (a fully fitted outside shed), an intensive care ward (the spare room), a nursery (bedroom) a recovery and overwintering ward (a converted barn) and an outside hedgehog village for housing hogs before release.

Marlborough as its patron. The hospital will be built in three phases. Phase one is to build a hospital capable of transferring the present facilities into a new building. £50,000 has already been raised and Andrew’s needs to raise a further £50,000 to plan to open phase one in March 2019. Phase two will be to add full veterinary facilities, including an education centre, laboratory and research centre and phase three will be to extend to a full wildlife hospital. Frank said: “It is essential to point out that Andrew’s is not where it is today solely because of our efforts but as a result of a wonderful army of dedicated volunteers and public support.” If Scunthorpe Journal readers would like to support Andrew’s, and visit the website www.andrewshedgehoghospital.org.uk or ‘like’ the Facebook page.

Frank said: “Andrew’s grew and grew and by 2017 we had taken in 521 sick and injured hedgehogs. Last year we made the decision that, as neither of us are getting any younger, we would like to leave a legacy and the decision was made to build a fully operational hedgehog hospital, with the hope of extending it to a full wildlife hospital.” Andrew’s Hedgehog Hospital was registered as a charity in March 2016 with the Duke of To advertise, please contact 01724 622004 or email info@createtvt.co.uk

When Judie pulled out the second golden envelope and I found out I’d won the car as well it was the cherry on top of the cake. Organisations come together for Winterton makeover

As part of national ‘We Care Day’ in September, over 30 staff and volunteers from housing provider Ongo embarked on a huge neighbourhood makeover in Winterton

We Care Day was created by Placeshapers, which is a national network of more than 100 community-based housing associations. The aim of the day was to encourage members to volunteer time to give back to their communities.

Paul Grimley, Housing Management Team Leader at Ongo said: “Our promise is that everything we do is put back into local communities, so events like the We Care Day fit perfectly. For us, it’s what makes the job worthwhile.”

Ongo coordinated teams throughout the day to complete the big clean-up, with help from partner organisations such as Scunthorpe’s Buildbase, the Probation Service, North Lincolnshire Council, Humberside Police and Veolia Waste Management.

Steve Marris, Branch Manager at Scunthorpe Buildbase, said: “Supporting community projects is something we feel is important, so when Ongo got in touch to tell us what they were planning we didn’t think twice about getting involved.”

Residents also got involved, with four skips being filled with waste from homes and gardens in the area. Other activities to improve the look of the estate included litter picking, fence painting, grass cutting, flower planting and restoring fences.

Lisa Hall, who is one of our tenants living on the estate, added: “I think it’s absolutely brilliant what Ongo did. They’re really committed to making a difference, and are doing a great job of tackling issues head on.”

to enjoy a great night out, our guests will also be helping to raise vital funds to help Lindsey Lodge Hospice continue to support local patients and their families who are living with a life-limiting illness.” “We’re run as an independent charity to provide free of charge, specialist palliative care to patients and families living in North Lincolnshire. Last year alone we provided 2,160 overnight stays in its Inpatient Unit and had 2,090 attendances to its Day Care Unit.” Karen added: “Our running costs are around £3.3million this year, and with less than 20% of our funding coming from the NHS, we rely on fundraising activities and donations. We hope people will come along and support our Winter Ball, in the knowledge they’ll be making a really difference for our charity.”

A £50 ticket (or £400 for a table of eight) promises guests a sparkling drinks reception at 7pm, followed by a delicious three-course dinner, live entertainment and music from the brilliant Rolling Keys, as well as lots of exciting surprises throughout the evening. Dyslexia Awareness Week in October Dyslexia is a term that most parents and teachers are familiar with, but did you know that 1 in 10 people in the UK struggle with some form of condition? Clare Powell, from Kip McGrath’s Tuition Centre in Scunthorpe, is an experienced teacher and an expert in identifying dyslexia. Clare said: “In a modern education system where reading, writing and exam success is so prominent, dyslexic students can really struggle with low self-esteem. “The new curriculum in England and Wales has removed the coursework for English and focuses more on spelling and grammar, making it even harder for dyslexic students to succeed.”
