Funding boost for playgroup A popular community facility used by a local playgroup and scout group has benefitted from a funding boost by the Tadcaster & Villages Community Engagement Forum
Stutton Playgroup moved to the Scout Hut on Firtree Crescent in Tadcaster last year and applied to the CEF for help with their relocation costs following the move. The registered charity is run by a committee of parent volunteers who work closely with the playgroup staff. The popular early years childcare setting was rated outstanding by OFSTED in 2016. Alison Scott, treasurer, told us: “The new location needed investment for a number of adaptations in order for us to use the location as well as the scouting groups. “We’ve had a busy year building links through the Scout Hut with the community and hosting a number of events, open days, shopping events and inviting local senior citizens to our craft and
Page 14
singing sessions.” Tadcaster CEF provided £1,000 in funding at the end of last year to help cover the costs of the Playgroup’s relocation expenses. The chair of Tadcaster & Villages CEF, Cllr Richard Sweeting, added: “Funding for the improvements to the Scout Hut has helped transform it into a really popular, well-used community facility. I’m delighted to see the way it is being used by these community groups.” There are five CEFs covering the Selby District – Central, Eastern, Western, Southern and Tadcaster & Villages. Each has £20,000 to spend on local projects that make a difference in their communities.

HEURISTIC PLAY AT JIGSAWS CHILDCARE In our Crawlers room for children aged from birth to two and in our Explorers Room for children aged two to three heuristic play forms an important part of the children’s learning and development. What is heuristic play: it is rooted in young children’s natural curiosity. As babies grow, they move beyond being content to simply feel and ponder objects, to wanting to find out what can be done with them. Toddlers have an urge to handle things: to gather, fill, dump, stack, knock down, select and manipulate in other ways. To provide for heuristic play, practitioners at Jigsaws collect natural materials like fir cones, conkers, seashells, and pebbles, as well as ribbons, wooden spoons, metal balls, teaspoons, pots and pans. Time is set aside for the group a special space is created and the objects are usually stored in a presented basket so the children understand this is a special time for
play. With the help of the practitioner the children explore the new objects to feel if they are warm or cold, heavy or light, smooth or rough. This also gives practitioners a new way to introduce vocabulary and imaginative ideas. Amie Ross, Crawlers Room Supervisor “Many of our staff have trained in the Baby Brain programme and we use many different ideas and activities to stimulate connections in learning but also in social and emotional development. Heuristic play offers a perfect opportunity to develop connections and we now have a home learning heuristic bag for parents to support activities at home”.

CARNIVAL ATMOSPHERE TAKES OVER TADCASTER The crowds didn’t fail to disappoint on Sunday 22 July as they turned out in their droves for the Tadcaster Carnival The sun was shining and there was a true party atmosphere as Ben and Roxy from Minster FM opened the celebrations. X Factor’s Ben Haenow headlined, alongside a packed entertainment line-up that included acrobatics, live music and a silent disco in the
Page 18
evening. The parade beforehand was, as always, spectacular, and while it was the last one planned for the foreseeable future, the Carnival itself continues to go from strength to strength and will be back in 2019. Photos courtesy of Richard Rafferty, Tadcaster Citizen

This month, Business Support Specialist Heidi Green offers hints on how to keep your cash flow on track
Cash-flow crisis? Just about every business will have cash-flow problems at some point, more often than not due to circumstances outside of its control. The most important thing is not to bury your head in the sand.
Firstly, have a cash-flow forecast to help you identify months where issues may arise. Having a process for prompt invoicing and credit control is essential, and always chase late payments. Do not be tempted to overtrade. If you receive a large order that requires a lot of upfront expenditure don’t be afraid to ask for
deposits to assist with cash flow.
Remember all your bills - if suppliers are not paid they may withdraw favourable terms. If you find you are struggling to keep the bank informed, having a solid relationship is vital and providing you can demonstrate it is a temporary issue, they can often help out. There are alternatives such as factoring, where the factoring company will buy the invoice at an agreed percentage and take the risk of then being paid by your clients. Review your terms, are you giving clients too long to pay? Would it be better to offer a

Universal Credit is the new benefits system which replaces six existing means-tested benefits and tax credits. Here, we take a look at how it can help your company.
How Universal Credit can help your business New system increases the financial incentive of work and provides employers with a more flexible workforce The new set-up means the 16-hour rule no longer applies, so staff can increase their hours and no longer worry about losing their benefits. Universal Credit gives jobseekers the flexibility to consider short-term work - as they’ll know their claim stays open and their benefit payment will adjust accordingly. It also gives employers the opportunity to use existing part-time staff for overtime and extra shifts at peak times. The flexibility of Universal Credit means you can give your staff extra shifts and responsibilities. This enables existing employees to increase their skills and progress within your company - encouraging
retention and a long-term reduction in recruitment costs. The system also offers jobseekers the opportunity to improve digital and budgeting skills, giving employers access to a wider pool of better prepared applicants. Universal Credit helps parents by offering more generous childcare support, helping them to not only move into work but increase their hours and availability. Payments are calculated using the PAYE real-time information you send to HMRC. This is a simpler and more accurate system - which means you will get fewer wage enquiries. If you’re self-employed and in receipt of Universal Credit,
you may be eligible for business mentoring. This is part of the Government’s commitment to small businesses. Initial mentoring can last for up to 12 weeks and includes workshops on topics including financial planning and marketing support, as well as help in creating a business development and growth plan. If the plan is viable, you can receive a further year of support and mentoring. Please note - not every jobseeker will currently be claiming Universal Credit. However, it is the Government’s intention that those remaining on any of the six existing means-tested benefits will be migrated across over the course of the next few years.

celebration at Tadcaster Albion Albion fans can now begin to plan for the season ahead now that the full schedule for the new Evo-Stik East League season has been announced
The team will kick off the new season at home for the first time in their Evo-Stik history as Carlton Town visit Ings Lane on Saturday 18th August. And the first Tuesday night of the campaign sees Taddy travel to the world’s oldest football club in Sheffield FC for their opening away match of the season. Former Albion boss Paul Marshall will bring his newly promoted Pickering Town side to TAFC on Boxing Day for an eagerly anticipated festive cracker. The fixture gods haven’t been kind on New Year’s

Michael Morton’s side will finish off the first-ever Evo-Stik East League season at home against Lincoln United on Saturday April 27th. Meanwhile, in other Albion news, the club has been named as one of five grassroots sports clubs from around the UK to be crowned winners in the Jewson Building Better Communities competition. Albion has been awarded £4,000 to make improvements to its facilities to encourage greater participation and more welcoming conditions for existing members.
