INTRODUCTION Tadcaster has shown such fantastic community spirit, especially when times have seemed tough and uncertain.

We are back with a variety of fabulous businesses showcasing their products and of course some feel-good community stories from in and around the area.

In this edition, we are, as always showcasing the brilliant community we have by talking to a local woman who is fundraising and also talking to a local business who have opened their doors this month.

With the country slowly starting to return to some sort of normal, now is more important that ever to get your business back on the right track. Tadcaster Echo is vowing to do its very best to help support businesses who want to be seen.

As always if you would like more information about how you can be featured in the magazine, get in touch with a member of our friendly team who will be happy to help.

Tadcaster beauty salon excited to reopen its doors From April 12th, many non-essential businesses have reopened their doors. Whilst this may have been a stressful and uncertain time, many businesses have used this time to revamp their business, and they are hoping not to have to close their doors again Tadcaster Echo had a chat with Ffion Powell, the owner of Totally Polished salon in Tadcaster, to find out more about what they have been up to these past few months. Ffion opened Totally Polished nearly five years ago and has been in the beauty industry since she was 14, starting as a Saturday girl working her way up to opening a salon. Ffion specialises in nail art which is becoming a huge hit with clients. How has lockdown affected the business? Lockdown has produced many hurdles for the salon, we have only been able to trade for three months of the year which has had a huge impact financially like so many other businesses. We are fortunate to have such a large space to be able to accommodate for our customers with the current restrictions. The Salon is already a clean and hygienic place to be. Sanitising, disinfecting and health and safety have been drilled into our routines since training. What have you been up to whilst closed? We always have to have a project ongoing at Totally Polished and during lockdown that has been no different. We have been furthering our creative skills, completing online Nail Art Courses with Industry Influencers. Having the time to study and complete our Award in Education and Teaching we were able to launch Totally Polished Academy, a Beauty School that excels in teaching a professional standard of beauty courses, enabling

Page 4

students to start their careers and reach their goals. What were you most looking forward to about reopening? We were so eager to get back open and be able to work in the Industry we are so passionate about. Nothing compares to the feeling you give somebody by effecting a beauty treatment and giving that client the feel good factor they so truly deserve. We are so lucky to already have an amazing clientele that have been hugely supportive with the Salon opening and closing during the Pandemic. We’re excited to be back open, to be catching up with familiar faces and welcome new clients into our newly renovated Salon. What are your plans for the future? This year we have further renovations planned for the salon, so keep your eyes peeled! We have plans to grow the Beauty Academy with some exciting new courses in the pipeline and a vision of consulting and helping others in the industry through the great knowledge we have achieved. We believe that in this Industry it is important you keep up with everything new, exciting and informative for your Customers and here at Totally Polished Beauty Salon and Training Academy that’s exactly what we achieve. For more information about the salon, please visit Totally Polished Tadcaster on Facebook.

Tadcaster Albion plans for new club house Tadcaster Albion are pleased to report that discussions/planning for the proposed new club have continued apace John Clothier, Press Officer for the club, said: “Once the plans have been signed off by the Clubs Directors, discussions with the local Planning Authority will open with a view to an early planning application. We will share the drawings with the supporters and our volunteer staff as soon as we can. “One of the possible solutions seems to provide the necessary measures to safeguard the ground as much as is possible. The club is working with the Environmental Agency to pursue this alternative. “The existing facility has served the club well but what we are working on now will be appropriate for the 21st Century. The club will not only be looking to maximise the services and comforts

available to the players, fans, and officials on matchday but hope the new building will attract interest from local residents and businesses and will be available to hire. “We are working with The Football Foundation for financial support and are at an advanced stage of discussion. However, that does not go all the way and we are now fundraising . We have had support from Selby Council, North Yorkshire County Council, Tadcaster Town Council along with Buildbase, the national builders’ merchants. Anyone who wants to get involved or offer assistance should get in touch with Club Chairman Andy Charlesworth on 07388 227414

Brave Boston fundraising to he Claire Maxted-Wiggins, 41, was diagnosed with Arthritis, Fibromyalgia, Costochondritis, Asthma and other health issues at just 15 years old. Although needing 24 hour care and living with chronic pain, Claire has been a fundraiser for over 25 years. In that time she has raised over £60,000 for various charities The events have included 41 walks, coffee mornings, racing nights, a head shave, discos, BBQ’s, walking a half marathon with help of her mum and a wheelchair, a zipline of Tyne bridge and walk over the O2 arena in London. Claire also enjoys arts and crafts and has over 4000 followers on social media following what she makes. Claire makes jewellery, candles, wax melts, soaps and much more. All proceeds go to various charities. Tadcaster Echo had a chat with Claire to find out more about what inspires her to take part and organise so many fundraising events. Claire told Tadcaster Echo: “I’ve been shielding

Page 12

for nearly a year as I am classed as being clinically extremely vulnerable, due to steroids that surpress my immune system. “The lockdowns have affected my mental health, I’ve been unable to see my mum and dad properly (as they are both vulnerable) and I have not been able to hug or go near my partner (as I have such a weak immune system). “In lockdown one I made pamper hampers for members of the community; for GPS, Nurses and even Carers full of handmade items that I had made. I wanted to share my handmade items and I wanted to give back and make someone smile, a few packages went to a nurse and her colleagues at ICU covid ward at St James, and they loved them.

n Spa woman elp those in need “I hope to do a raffle in the future to raise funds for Captain Sir Tom Moore foundation, or NHS charities together. I know coronavirus isn’t going away in a hurry and therefore hope to continue with my care packages for several months. I also make special care packages for children on children’s wards, the elderly (in wards and care homes) and even mother and baby care packages for mums and baby units! “I will fundraise till my last breath I always say or until I can no longer do so. I am proud of all of my achievements so far. I hope maybe to reach £100,000 but I am in no rush and if I don’t reach that goal, that’s ok, I know I have done all I can.

“Due to coronavirus my volunteering and fundraising has been put on hold. Not many charities have events happening, however many are doing virtual campaigns, like 10,000 steps a day. With my craft sales, I have to make sure I wear PPE when making the crafts and packing them, that I wear a mask and gloves and sanitise my hands when I send them or the buyer collects, and social distancing rules apply also. I think not keeping busy all the time as I would normally has definitely affected my mental health.” A huge well done to Claire, we hope to see you in and around Tadcaster fundraising very soon!
