SPECTRUM YOUTH GROUP CELEBRATES THREE YEARS
.
A youth club is celebrating three years of providing fun and support to young people with additional needs Spectrum Youth Group, which is based at Manor Farm Youth Centre on a Monday evening, began when a teenage relative of one of the volunteers was stuck inside with nothing to do and so his family began to wonder what other young people in his situation did with their time. Friends of the family then got together to help and the group was formed. It has now developed into a supportive and inclusive group for young people with physical, emotional or learning needs. Nicky Wilkins, who volunteers at the group, said: “We try and cater for any members age 14 to 25 with additional physical or emotional needs. We are happy for parents to stay but quite often after a few weeks of coming, our members like the freedom of their parents leaving them! At Manor Farm we have all kinds of activities to do.” The group is entirely run by a group of dedicated volunteers and is largely self-funded, with some help from local businesses too. Nicky added: “I really love the work we do here, the members are so lovely and it’s great to see their
6
confidence growing week on week. Members and parents tell us it can be the highlight of their week, they look forward to coming to the group and seeing their friends.” Spectrum Youth Group runs every Monday evening (in term time) from 7pm to 9pm at Manor Farm Youth Centre, St Joseph’s Street, Tadcaster. If anyone would like to join the group visit www.spectrumyouthgroup.co.uk or the Facebook page, @spectrumyouthgroup, for more information.

Feature artist for hospice art festival announced A Tadcaster-based artist has been announced as the feature artist for St Leonard’s Hospice’s month-long celebration of art in July
Chub Perkins, who has also recently created a pop-up woodland art gallery in Tadcaster called Little Land, will feature in the Sunflower Art Festival, which showcases art from all different styles and genres as well as raising money for St Leonard’s Hospice. Chub said: “To be selected as a featured artist for the inaugural Sunflower Art Festival at St Leonard’s Hospice is a tremendous honour. The standard of care and support that they provide is invaluable so to be involved directly with its fundraising using my newly re-discovered artistic skills is extremely gratifying. Plus they’re not asking me to run a marathon which pleases me greatly.” There will be a number of community events, workshops and exhibitions throughout the month all across the area culminating in an exhibition at the University of York, showcasing all artworks from Thursday 19th July until Saturday 21st July.
8
The aim is to display over 500 pieces of artwork and members of the public can come to view and purchase art. They will also vote for the favourite. Chub added: “To share my work with the world, and that of other selected local artists, I’ve recently created a pop-up woodland art gallery in Tadcaster called Little Land. When the weather allows we exhibit our work amongst the trees, allowing an all important real-world connection between the artwork and viewer. 2018 is our first year too so to be involved with the Sunflower Art Festival in what is also its inaugural year is not only serendipitous but also very fitting. “I’m looking forward to this exhibition - knowing that the proceeds of any sales will go towards helping such a worthwhile cause adds an extra element of satisfaction to the artistic process.” Visit www.stleonardshospice.org.uk

FAB VOCAB AT JIGSAWS CHILDCARE
Communication and language development for all our children at Jigsaws is important but we pay particular attention to it in our Explorers Room: which supports children and families from 22 months to three years. This is such an important time in your child’s life for speech development as our practitioners know. Language development doesn’t happen by accident our practitioners make a real difference and their knowledge and good role modelling is essential in early support. Your child picks up words that we read to them, they hear in conversation or through direct instruction. A child needs to hear a new word 10 times in order to be able to process it and add to their vocabulary. Karen Holding, Room Supervisor in our
Explorers Room explains “Through the week: new words are set as a target for children to hear, learn and understand. Stories using these words are read to the children and then backed up with activities through the week. For instance, the word ‘delicious’ we read the book Handa’s Surprise, and spoke about the delicious fruit, we then made fruit kebabs and tasted how delicious they were, nice to eat and good for our bodies. At circle time children spoke about what food they found to be delicious”. Story boxes and tuff trays are also great for developing story ideas providing opportunities to extend vocabulary and develop children’s enjoyment. Practitioners use these resources to expand children’s ability to share their own stories through imaginative play.

May is Music for Martin House month! Throughout the whole of May, bands, choirs, orchestras, DJs, organisers and everything in-between put on music events to raise money for children with life-shortening illnesses A spokesperson for Martin House Hospice said: “Throughout this month, we are asking our incredible supporters to organise gigs, concerts, open-mic nights and recitals in their local venues. We are asking you to spread the word and raise awareness and money for the children and families in your local community who are in need of our support. “It could be anything from live-streaming a gig from your bedroom and asking for donations, to putting on a whole new event or festival – and anything in-between. If you already have a concert planned for May, perhaps you could donate a percentage of the profits, or run a raffle at it? Or ask at the door for guest-list donations? There are so many ways to support Music for Martin House and how you do it is down to you!
18
“Music plays a central role in life at Martin House and is key in creating a creative and energising environment. Every day, music can be heard almost constantly around the house; it could be teenagers recording DJ mixes in the purposebuilt recording studio, groups of families joined together in a fun, interactive sing along in the conservatory, or intimate, one-to-one sessions for a child with complex needs at the bedside - or even live bands at Lodgefest, Martin House’s very own music festival!” If you would like to put on a concert in May for Music for Martin House, please contact Martin House on 01937 844569 or email cverney@martinhouse.org.uk. For further information about setting up your own event for Martin House, visit the website www.martinhouse.org.uk.

Book to commemorate England’s bloodiest battle in Towton Last month marked the anniversary of England’s bloodiest battle, which was fought in the Selby district over 500 years ago On 29 March 1461 – in driving snow – the rival armies of Henry VI and Edward IV engaged in a battle that lasted 10 hours at Towton, near Tadcaster. It’s thought that each of these armies had up to 40,000 soldiers, around 28,000 of whom died on the battlefield, turning rivers red with blood for several days.
full of top-quality images and stories from every corner of our area, the book gives a unique perspective on what makes the Selby district so special.
This is just one of the stories about the Selby district included in a special photo book, produced by Selby District Council in partnership with the Selby Town Enterprise Partnership, to celebrate the heritage and culture of the area. The 50-page coffee-table book includes a range of special places and stories covering Selby, Tadcaster, Sherburn-inElmet and many of the key villages in the area.
The book is available from the following retailers in Selby and Tadcaster for just £12.99.
A spokesperson for Selby District Council said: “The photo book celebrates the reasons why the Selby district is a great place to enjoy life. Packed
“Whether you’re looking for historic beauty, great events, family experiences or something that’s truly unique, then the Selby district has the answer.”

This month, Business Support Specialist Heidi Green talks about exporting at your company
Exporting – Where to start? Wanting to grow your business and think export is right for you? Not sure where to start? Here are a few things to consider. Research is essential – identify the markets with some desk research, look at the potential new market, its demographics, cultural practices and the existing competition. Having an export plan is vital. It should include if you can drive this with your existing team or whether you need to recruit. Do you need to upscale the premises, do you have the capacity to meet new market demands? Think about the legal requirements to label things
differently, do you need to translate and will your design appeal to the new market? Visiting the countries you wish to export into is essential, showcase at trade fairs. There is no better way to build new contacts than by meeting the buyers. Consider the exchange rates when it comes to payment, which currency will you be using? An irrevocable letter of credit could be advised which will secure payments according to the terms of the credit and at an agreed rate. Make sure you are insured for your goods during transportation.

Childcare costs are a huge issue for many parents, but there is help out there. Here we look at what kind of help is available for different circumstances.
Help with childcare costs
You can get help with childcare costs if it’s facilitated by an ‘approved childcare provider’ This means it must be a registered childminder, play-scheme nursery or club, a childminder with an Ofsted-registered childminding agency, a registered school or a home-care worker working for a registered home-care agency. You can also get help paying for childcare provided by a school. If your child is over five, the childcare must be outside school hours and on the school premises. 15 and 30 hours free childcare for three and four-year-olds All three to to four-year-olds in England can get free early education or childcare. The free
early education and childcare must be with an approved childcare provider and must stop when your child starts in reception class. Some twoyear-olds are also eligible for 15 hours free childcare if you get certain benefits. Tax-Free Childcare You can get up to £500 every three months for each of your children to help with the costs of childcare. If you get Tax-Free Childcare, the Government will pay £2 for every £8 you pay your childcare provider via an online account. You can’t get Tax-Free Childcare at the same time as claiming Working Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, Universal Credit or childcare vouchers.
Childcare provided by relatives You can only get help paying for childcare by a relative (for example a grandparent) if they’re a registered childminder and care for your child outside your home or you’re paying them using Universal Credit, tax credits or childcare vouchers. Childcare vouchers Your employer may be able to help you with approved childcare costs using childcare vouchers or other schemes, for example a staff nursery. Which scheme you’re better off with depends on your situation. Use the childcare calculator to work out which type of support is best for you at https://www.gov.uk/ childcare-calculator.
