Young filmmaker, George Bartlett, releases a film documenting the impact of the Tadcaster bridge collapse, and its effect on the community spirit of the town Where better to screen the new film by George Bartlett, The Broken Bridge, than in the newly renamed pub of the same name? On Saturday July 15th, residents of Tadcaster were treated to the end result of months of hard work by George, as he screened his documentary in the Broken Bridge pub as part of its oneyear anniversary. Talking to the Tadcaster Echo, George said, ‘Time has always moved very slowly in Tadcaster, but that’s what many of us love about the town. To me, Tadcaster’s threehundred-year-old bridge has always symbolised the town’s heritage, and the town as a historical landmark.’ This, in George’s eyes, is what made the collapse of the bridge so significant. He continued, ‘It was a sign of changing times. I wanted to tell the story of the town’s journey

and how a town, which prides itself so much on its past, was forced to start thinking about its future.’

manages to capture wonderfully in his film. He told us: ‘I found the resilience of the people of Tadcaster to be incredibly moving. It’s thanks to the great community spirit shown by the people of Tadcaster over such a turbulent year and a half that despite being physically divided, the town never once stopped feeling whole.’ The Broken Bridge will no doubt be a film that, in years to come, is often revisited as a perfect depiction of such a poignant point in the history of Tadcaster.

George moved to Tadcaster when he was four, and has developed a close connection to the town, enjoying its friendly community. When the bridge collapsed and separated the town, despite the devastation and disruption, George still saw the seemingly unbreakable Tadcaster spirit in its residents, which he

For those that missed the screening of the film in July, keep an eye on the Tadcaster Echo Facebook page where we’ll let you know of any future screenings or links to the film. To see the film’s trailer, head to https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=xxlRgHUX8Bk

Channel your inner bookw Tadcaster Community Library is to celebrate six months of being run by volunteers with an open day Tadcaster’s Community Library became community-managed in April after a transformation of North Yorkshire County Council’s library service that required all libraries to be run or supported by volunteers. And following the policy revamp, the library is set to celebrate six successful months of being entirely run by volunteers with an open day on October 7th. To facilitate the change, a steering group was formed before more than 30 volunteers were recruited to support the running of the library. Benefitting from the partnership and support of professionals from the County Council’s library service, the library is flourishing and very much looking forward to the future.

Sara Gott, chair of the library trustees, said, ‘The open day will give people who don’t know the library the chance to discover just how much goes on here.’ County Council library supervisor Julie Lakin said, ‘The enthusiasm and amount of time the volunteers have put in is amazing. They are keeping the library up and running, and are doing so at a really good standard.’ For the celebratory open day, the library will be open from 10am until 2pm on Saturday October 7th. There will be activities for children, as well as an authorthemed exhibition. Everyone at the Tadcaster Echo would like to congratulate and thank all the volunteers who have worked hard to rejuvenate our community library.

GRASSROOTS FOOTBALL FOR THE YOUNG BREWERS How your local football club is working hard to keep Tadcaster’s young people active this summer With the sport growing increasingly popular as each football season rolls by, the grassroots schemes on offer throughout the country are more important than ever when it comes to introducing young children to football. And while Tadcaster Albion’s senior team is ready to embark on a second consecutive season in the Evo-Stik Division One North league - after finishing 19th in

12

Issue 32 - August/September 2017 2016/17 - the Brewers’ foundation is also hard at work introducing Tadcaster’s youth to the sport - potentially unveiling a new footballing star in the process… We spoke to Danial Parker - the club’s football foundation manager - about Tadcaster Albion’s important role in uniting the local community, as well as the summertime activities and coaching classes available to children during the school holidays. What are the main aims of Albion’s football foundation? Tadcaster Albion Foundation is a part of the i2i Life Foundation - a non-profit organisation with a mission to connect, inspire and empower the local community, and offer opportunities for both young people and adults to fulfil their potential. We are looking to develop a community hub to provide a focal point with the facilities to promote greater community activity, and bring residents, local businesses and other smaller organisations together. What is your own history in football? I am an FA Level 3 (UEFA B) football coach, previously the community manager for York City Football Club Foundation, where I worked for 20 years developing their football, community and primary/secondary school coaching programmes. I have also worked for the York City FC Academy for 4 years with the under 15/16 squads. Since August 2016, I have been employed by Tadcaster Albion FC and i2i Sports as their foundation manager, working closely with the local schools and community organisation in preparation for developing the Tadcaster Albion community Hub in 2018/19. What specific activities and classes are the foundation running this summer? Football Roadshows - age and ability specific sessions with an emphasis on fun and development. Sessions focus on skills, technique, competition and small team games. Girls Only Football Camps - the perfect way to introduce your daughter to football, and learn the technical, physical and social skills of the beautiful game. A perfect day out for the school holidays!

required to be a top ‘keeper. Football Fridays - a full day of football tournaments and skill competitions, with special prizes reserved for the winners. What are the main benefits of Tadcaster’s young people getting involved with the foundation this summer? With health, wellbeing and physical activity being high on the list of parents’ priorities, the Tadcaster Albion Foundation feels it is important to provide opportunities for young people to not only access elite level coaching, but to also find role models that inspire them to pursue active and healthy lifestyles. So we believe that attending our summer holiday activities can have a positive impact on the development of your child both in sport and as a person. What do you find is the most satisfying thing about running these activities?

Attackers Course - a bespoke training course for attackminded players delivered by the i2i Football Academy’s Head of Development.

As a football coach, you have an amazing opportunity to positively influence the lives of all the children that attend our grassroots schemes. And if they take these skills into their futures, it really is priceless. We can’t recommend the foundation’s summer activities and classes highly enough!

Goalkeeping with Michael Ingham - an unrivalled goalkeeping experience with the former international goalkeeper, and current Tadcaster Albion no.1. Participants will take part in specific training sessions with fun activities and games to develop the skills

We think the Tadcaster Albion Foundation’s grassroots football activities and classes are an excellent way of keeping your kids active this summer, so for more information, please contact Danial by email at danial. parker@enteri2i.com.

10 YEARS ON AND STILL CONSISTENTLY GOOD Since starting the business 10 years ago in 2007, Business Manager, Helen Smith, and Operations Manager, Nicole Newiss, have undergone four Ofsted inspections. The latest one took place in February of this year and again the team was awarded a GOOD in all areas. Helen Smith said “This grading from Ofsted was such positive news. During the last ten years of business we have seen our nursery grow from one building to two buildings with age-specific rooms. We used to have a registration for just 18 children and now we have over 120 children and 90 families from all surrounding areas that use us throughout the week. Even with all these

improvements and the changes in the way Ofsted carry out their inspections, we have still maintained a consistent ‘GOOD’ rating in 2008, 2011, 2013 and now 2017”. The team of 16 staff has worked very hard to create a nurturing and inspiring quality nursery which provides a lovely homely feel, whilst still challenging children through taught activities. This year many of our Year Six children who started with us as babies in our Crawlers Room will be heading off to high school to start their next adventure and it is wonderful to know that we have enthused their learning for the future.

We will be holding an Open Day in October to celebrate our 10 years and now can combine this with our proud achievement in attaining another Ofsted GOOD rating

St Joseph’s Street’s Award-Winning De Tadcaster’s ‘outstanding’ social housing has been recognised with an excellence award The Selby & District Housing Trust have won a prestigious award for the best social housing development in North and East Yorkshire. The homes on St Joseph’s Street in the town centre - helping to provide new, affordable homes for local people - were recognised for their ‘outstanding’ construction and workmanship. The awards are presented by North and East Yorkshire LABC - Local Authority Building Control partnership. This partnership delivers building control services for all of North Yorkshire, the East Riding and City of York areas. Selby & District Housing Trust is an independent body that partners Selby District Council to build and manage new, affordable properties across the district.

Local district councillors were involved in developing the concept of homes on this site, including identifying the land on which the homes have been built. This comes from a wider piece of work from the District Council to tackle the key issue of local housing supply in the town. Speaking on behalf of the Housing Trust, Cllr John Mackman, was delighted the Tadcaster homes had been recognised, ‘When we developed these new properties, we wanted to focus on creating the best possible quality of home for our tenants. It’s really important for the Trust to be able to support high-quality housing in the district, as part of our commitment to helping families and individuals in need of affordable homes.’

Securing a job within the NHS may seem quite competitive, but there are a number of routes you can take in order to find your dream job within the country’s largest employer

Starting your career in the NHS Could a career in the NHS be the next step for you? Don’t think of them as an employer catering strictly to medical professionals as the NHS offers many different opportunities…

The NHS is the largest employer in the UK, and many people who step into the organisation already have a firm idea of what they want to do. However, did you know that there are over 350 career paths available? These range from nonclinical roles - such as those associated with the hospitality industry, clerical work and estates maintenance - to the more specialised roles of nurses, doctors, therapists and scientists. Each hospital trust/board is autonomous, and responsible for recruiting its own staff. Volunteering is highly recommended as it can aid in gaining new skills and experience within the NHS. It will help you to understand how the many different job roles dovetail together to ensure the efficient running of such a hugely important national institution. Of course, as well as the personal satisfaction of a career in the NHS, there are excellent employee benefits, too. Here are just a few:

22

• 27 days leave per year - rising to 33 after 10 years • Occupational health and counselling available Training and progression offers the opportunity to progress through pay bands. The NHS prides itself on its progression practices, and its current programme, entitled Talent for Care, has three central themes: Get In, Get On, Go Further. These demonstrate how it is possible for an individual to enter the NHS in a completely non-medical capacity, (e.g. healthcare assistant or porter) and continue to progress via an established training programme to achieve the necessary qualifications. This will then help you undertake a more senior medical role. In addition, there are annual personal development reviews to support individual career aspirations. So, how do you get a job in the NHS? Apply for live NHS vacancies using the web link listed below: www.jobs.nhs.uk

• 37.5 hour working week, plus extras for out of hours/overtime

Successful candidates will be invited to one-to-one interviews. DBS checks and an understanding of NHS values both feature as part of the recruitment process for applicants.

• The salary and pension are still among the best in the public/medical sectors

Apprenticeship programmes are widely available across the NHS across a variety of roles.

This month, Business Support Specialist Heidi Green shares the seven key ingredients for successful business ownership

The things any successful business owner should do There are certain things imperative for any successful business owner to consider on their journey. In no particular order, these are:

1. Have a plan. You should know what your objectives are for the next twelve months, and how you are going to achieve them. If you break them down into achievable

monthly targets, you can easily track them and take action if things start to slip.

2. Keep learning. Make sure you undertake some personal or business development at least once a week. Nothing stands still, so you really need to keep up-to-date with your skillset. Perhaps you might learn how to close a deal easier, who your competitors are, or how to communicate more effectively. It’s amazing how much difference it can make to your confidence. 3. Be organised. Have systems and processes in place that help you streamline your business. It is also vital to keep accurate financial records. Remember, if you are not controlling the finances, you are not controlling the business.

Issue 32 - August/September 2017 4. Make sure you contact three people each day. They could be new prospects or people you have not communicated with for a while. It may only take you fifteen minutes, but that equates to fifteen people per week. If just 10% convert to customers, you will be well rewarded for a small investment of your time. 5. Get networking. Both face-to-face and on social media. This can help complement physical networking, and will keep people engaged. Networking is an important part of your marketing strategy, and while it might be considered timeconsuming, it can pay dividends. 6. Learn to delegate. You have lots to do, so why not use the services of a virtual assistant to help you achieve your goals? You can then concentrate on doing what you do best! 7. Get a mentor! It is lonely being self-employed. Someone who can act as a sounding board and keep you accountable can really help quell any sense of isolation, as well as help your business to be the best it can possibly be. Heidi Adele Green (aka The Business HAG) has been offering Help, Advice and Guidance to businesses since 2003. Get in touch, she would love to hear from you heidi@the-business-hag.co.uk

The Super Stingray Sw We speak to Jemima Browning about the Tadcaster Stingrays’ amazing work in helping young people with disabilities take to the water For those with physical or learning disabilities, getting involved with sport and exercise can be an immensely daunting task. And though sport teams are encouraged to be inclusive and allembracing, it can feel like a lonely place without a sense of belonging.

28

But one such local organisation promoting inclusion for all in sport is Tadcaster’s Community Swimming Pool, where Jemima Browning offers all-inclusive swimming lessons for young people with disabilities, as part of her Tadcaster Stingrays swimming squad. Speaking to the Tadcaster Echo, Jemima explained how

important it is for people with disabilities to have access to sport, It’s an opportunity for young people to gain a sense of belonging, and be proud members of a group, as some young people with disabilities can feel isolated. The club itself is about promoting sport for all, and the Tadcaster

wimmers Stingrays is open to young people aged between 11 and 18 with learning and physical disabilities, who can already swim at least 25m confidently. As a group, we pride ourselves on training together as a team. Often referred to as the full-body workout - as it utilises the vast majority of the body’s muscles in a low-impact environment swimming is perhaps the most strenuous form of exercise of all. So it’s easy to understand why Jemima is so proud of her current crop of Stingrays, which currently stands at nine swimmers,

I am full of pride and admiration for all my swimmers and the amazing things they do, and the improvements in their swimming skills can easily be seen. Their stamina is increasing, their techniques are almost perfect, and their friendships are even stronger. The most exciting part is that we now have Stingray team swim caps and hoodies featuring our team logo, which reinforces our team aims. For Jemima, her role as the Stingrays’ in-pool assistant takes on personal relevance, as she has a brother with Downs Syndrome - William - who is also a keen member of the swimming squad. Jemima continued, ‘He [William] has enriched my life, and taught me so much about what it means to be disabled. We should never

put limits on what we think individuals can achieve.’ Having founded the Tadcaster Stingrays little over a year ago, the sky (or the sea…) really is the limit for these young Tadcaster swimmers, and understandably, Jemima would love to see the squad continue to grow, ‘It would be fantastic for more members to join, and benefit from the sessions that we offer, as the inclusive ideas behind the Stingrays shine through in everything that we do.’ For more information on the fantastic opportunities available with the Tadcaster Stingrays, please contact Fiona Garnett by email at fiona@ tadcasterpool.co.uk, or find the Stingrays on social media. Business of the

month

We speak to Jigsaws Childcare to find out about their childcare services, and how their North Yorkshire setting influences their nursery and daycare centre

Soon to celebrate their ten-year anniversary, Jigsaws Childcare is a Tadcaster-based specialist nursery and daycare centre with a wholehearted commitment to comprehensive childcare through caring values. Can you tell us a little about the services that Jigsaws Childcare offer? As a full daycare nursery, we are open from 7:30am until 6pm Monday to Friday all year round. We offer sessional and full daycare for babies from 3 months old to pre-school age. For young children to children up to 11 years old, we offer wrap-around care and fun holiday activity clubs. What makes Jigsaws stand out from other childcare providers in the region? Our aim has always been to provide a home from home environment. We have managed to create this setting by keeping our number of places low, and by getting to know the families of the individual children that we care for. And we are very proud to have been consistently rated ‘GOOD’ by Ofsted for the last ten years. What aspect of the business are you most proud of? I am proud of the practitioners

30

we have at Jigsaws, and their dedication to nurture, inspire, challenge and enthuse the children in their care is phenomenal. It always amazes me how they can integrate their teaching into the everyday play of the children and that they learn so much without even knowing it. Do you have any interesting facts about Jigsaws? Both the practitioners and children at Jigsaws love messy play! We use mud kitchens, gloop, rice, custard, paints and water to learn about maths, communication, sharing and other aspects of the Early Years Foundation Stage. What does the future hold for Jigsaws? We are currently working towards Millie’s Mark - an award put in place by Millie’s parents, Dan and Joanne Thompson, who have successfully campaigned for changes to firstaid requirements for childcare providers. A nursery achieving Millie’s Mark is an exceptional

achievement, as it acknowledges that staff would be confident in saving a child’s life if they needed to. We will also be holding a fun day in October to celebrate our tenth anniversary. What do you love most about being based in North Yorkshire? Our village offers us so many opportunities. We explore woodland areas to support our work with Forest Schools, enjoy walks in the park and take trips to the train station and the church. The children are able to learn so much about their community and environment by being based in such an idyllic, rural location. Lastly, what are the main benefits you enjoy from advertising in our magazine? We are able to communicate directly with the families who would use us, rather than more regional or national magazines where it wouldn’t be as relevant!
