Local business receives a national award following its outstanding innovative work The Organic Pantry, based in Tadcaster, has picked up a national award following on from its trailblazing work using organic potatoes the Boom Awards ceremony in London this June, where they were crowned winners in the ‘best of organic innovation’ category.

The farm is popular for its impressive ‘box scheme’ which delivers organic goods to homes in the North of England. But The Pantry was awarded for its good work with a popular ingredient - the

The award celebrated The Pantry’s approach to finding a new way to keep potatoes fresh, and ensuring nasty chemicals were kept out of the food chain. The business does all sorts of work to benefit people as Freddie explained.
“We actually came runners up in the ‘best box scheme’ in the UK, so we narrowly missed out on that one, but of course we also are a wholesale business, so it is nice to recognised for our innovation. We are regularly buying in produce from Spain, France and Italy because we sell to schools, shops and other businesses.

Britain’s most successful female Paralympian greets Tadcaster community Paralympic cyclist Dame Sarah Storey has stopped off in Tadcaster, ahead of the UCI Road World Championships and Yorkshire 2019 Para-Cycling International, which are taking place in the county this September Both events visit a number of villages and towns in the district, with Tadcaster chosen as one of the three start locations for the Yorkshire 2019 Para-Cycling International, which takes place on Saturday 21st September. During Sarah’s visit, she met local school children from Riverside and St Joseph’s Primary Schools and community groups organising the start event in the town. She took part in a question and answer session with the children, and handed over a huge flag that will fly over the town when the races take place. David Gluck, from Tadcaster Events Management Project Team (TEMPT) added: “We are working hard to make sure these cycling races are enjoyed by the whole community. We were extremely
proud to be able to show off some of the preparations that are already in place for the event. “There’ll be a community festival with plenty of opportunities to watch the races, try out some of the cycles used, with fun and games for the whole family. The whole town will be decorated with the rainbow race colours. We know how fantastic Tadcaster looked for the Tour de Yorkshire – and these races will be just as special.” Volunteers involved in staging the race event came along to meet Sarah and students from Tadcaster Grammar School served tea and cakes (which they’d baked and decorated) on the lawn in front of Manor Farm for the guests. For more info about the races visit www.selby.gov. uk/cycling-2019-uci-road-world-championshipsand-para-cycling-international

locals complete gruelling charity journey
A group of three men from Tadcaster have completed their four-day journey from John O’Groats to Lands End, in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support Lee Morrall, Shane Simpson and Mark Taylor rode from the furthest North point in Scotland, across the North coast and down the West coast to the furthest South point on Honda C90s averaging 30mph, throughout, covering 1,200 miles! Page 16
After deciding to take on the challenge last year, the group completed the gruelling ride in just four days; donating all funds raised to Macmillan Cancer Support.
trip, they have ended up raising £2,000 with that figure set to rise. After the lengthy journey, we spoke to Lee Morrall who told us the journey did not come without its challenges.
The group bought the bikes online after weighing up their options last year regarding the famous John O’Groats to Lands End ride. Following the
“It was great fun, and it proved to be a real achievement after some of the things we went through. On the first two days we braved some severe
Issue 44 - August/September 2019
weather warnings and I ended up wearing a poncho for a part of the journey as well as flying airborne when hitting a cattle grid at full speed! Various emergency quick fixes with tie wraps were required and Shane’s indicator even fell off, not to mention the sat nav playing up. “We then found out my bike’s MOT wasn’t in date, so we were forced to visit a garage on the west coast of Scotland where we struck lucky and found a great little place. They didn’t charge us for the MOT, so there was more to go in our donation.”
“We are also now donating Shane’s bike off to the highest bidder, and that money will also be part of our donation.” Following the decision to donate all the raised funds to Macmillan, Lee told us it was a charity close to him personally, and it seemed like the right thing to do with the money. “It made sense for us all really. Mark and myself are keen cycling fans, and Mark had already done the coast to coast where you ride from the east of the country to the west over one day. We ended up deciding to do
something a little different, and opted for going the length of the country on under-powered motorbikes, which we knew would be tough. “As for the charity side of things, we all said we are doing the ride anyway so it would be a wasted opportunity if we weren’t to donate to someone. We all have close family or know someone who is affected by cancer. I have lost family, Mark and Shane also know what it is like so it we quickly all came to the agreement that we should do the ride for Macmillan.”

This month, Business Support Specialist Heidi Green talks us through the negative effects of putting tasks off
I’ll do it later! That is what I said to myself when I knew I had the deadline to meet for writing this brief article. Why? Why not do it straight away? If the task ahead only takes minutes, stop putting it off. Deal with it straight away and it will save time in the future. Set a timer for 30 minutes and stick to the task in hand, no checking emails, making phone calls, looking at social media, just concentrate on the task and after the 30 minutes is up take a five-minute break. You will be amazed how productive this is.
Page 20
Do you need a deadline to motivate you? It is always better to start something well before you need to. Use online calendars and alerts to make sure you start projects early. Break large projects into bite-sized chunks. This all stops that dreaded rush as the deadline approaches (and hopefully stops mistakes happening!). For further help on business growth and funding opportunities contact Heidi Green, Senior Business Advisor for Selby District Council via email at hgreen@selby.gov.uk or telephone 01757 292332.

Success for Tadcaster Harriers at annual Endure24 event There were a number of podium finishes for members of the Tadcaster Harriers running club at this year’s edition of Endure24
The multi-award winning Endure24 is a unique event in the running calendar, mixing serious ultra-running with a 24 hour team relay race. The Harriers selected a competitive team to take part in the event, in a day which proved to be a great success for the club. On the day there were also events such as the solo males, male pairs, and ladies’ team of 6-8. After the gruelling day, we spoke to Dave Mullaney from the Harriers, who told us it was great fun and represented the strength of the club. “The ethos of the event for Tadcaster Harriers is
Page 28
for us to go out and have an enjoyable weekend. Coming away with any trophies is secondary, but the fact that we did is testament to the strength in depth of the club at the moment. “We didn’t select teams from the fastest in the club, but selected a ladies and men’s team that we felt would be competitive from the members who had wanted to run at the weekend. To come away with podium places is a fantastic achievement. “At an event like this where you are there for the whole weekend, there is quite a bit of socialising, as well as the running. Getting the best conditions for both is almost impossible.”
HOROSCOPES August/Sept Issue 44 - August/September 2019
Aquarius
(20th Jan-18th Feb) Have you been spending too much? Maybe it is time to consider when it is wise to spend and when it is not. Focus on achieving this balance.
Pisces
(19th Feb-20th March) Resist the temptation to pry into secrets. You may be the person everyone comes to for gossip, but you can’t compromise your reputation for the sake of popularity.
Aries
Gemini
(21st May-20th June) Respecting friends’ privacy is key to being respected yourself. Make sure you are not critical of those closest to you if they want some space to themselves.
Cancer
(21st June- 22nd July) Whether you sign a new client or are offered a job, you will return home with a big smile on your face. It feels great when people admire your ideas.
Leo
Libra
(23rd Sept-22nd Oct) Negative feedback is discouraging, but it shouldn’t cause you to quit. Be kind and gentle with yourself as you make another attempt.
Scorpio
(23rd Oct-21st Nov) You don’t like the same activities as your romantic partner. That shouldn’t be a deal breaker for your relationship. You can pursue your hobbies separately.
Sagittarius
(21st March-19th April) Being loud and forceful will backfire! A calm, gentle approach will command respect and give you the power you want.
(23rd July-22nd Aug) You readily give your honest opinion. This can hurt a sensitive person’s feelings, but it’s not your fault. You never deliver criticism in a malicious way.
(22nd Nov-21st Dec) Time to forgive someone who has betrayed you. Practising mercy doesn’t mean condoning bad behaviour; it simply involves releasing someone’s hold on you.
Taurus
Virgo
Capricorn
(20th April-20th May) Trust your instinct, even when it goes against what you feel would be right in the moment. Your innate wisdom is right on target, as always.
(23rd Aug-22nd Sept) You usually retaliate at any opportunity. Remaining calm and biting your tongue is sometimes the better option to keep friendships.
(22nd Dec-19th Jan) Listen to uplifting music, make a gratitude list or recall some happy memories. Chasing away the shadows will attract love, luck and prosperity.
