Tadcaster Stingray part in their third Sp For the third year in a row, The Tadcaster Stingrays Swim team recently attended The Annual Special Olympics: Yorkshire & Humberside Regional Swimming Gala at Harrogate Hydro Swimming Pool Five members of the team, coached and managed by nineteen-year-old Jemima Browning, competed in the gala on Saturday 9th November. All swimmers who attend the annual gala have an intellectual disability, as this is a requirement for The Special Olympics competitions. The Stingrays’ third successful entry in the competition was made possible by Jemima’s ever dedicated efforts to raise funds. At the end of the 10 events they competed in, The Stingrays came home with new personal best times, two gold medals, three silver medals and three bronze medals. Jemima was immensely proud of the team’s achievements, but told us
Page 6
how it was the Stingrays’ morale and support that impressed her the most. “Stingrays’ screams and shouts of support could be heard all around the pool. “I was so proud of the swimmers’ achievements but mostly I was proud of how well they supported one another. You could really see the team spirit they all shared and how much they relished being part of a team. They greeted the other teams warmly despite being from different places, and their overall team spirit was felt by all. “This is the first step in breaking down barriers for those with disabilities - we are changing perceptions.”
Issue 46 - December/January 2020
ys successfully take pecial Olympics Gala Jemima’s passion for coaching the swim team grew from a place close to home. Her brother Will has Down’s Syndrome and as he grew older, Jemima and her family realised there was a huge lack of opportunity for young people with disabilities. Seeing the barriers in front of Will, she was inspired to create more opportunities for young people like him. “He is my best friend. He inspires me every single day. He never lets his disability affect the way he lives. He never complains or uses it as an excuse not to achieve. He is aspirational and works hard to reach his targets. I decided if the world was not going to create opportunities for people like my brother it was down to me to create a change. It is just a case of creating the right environment by making reasonable adjustments to allow people with disabilities to achieve, for they can achieve anything they set their mind to. “They all belong to a group where their disability is not focused on but their ability is developed and they are pushed to achieve their aspirations.
This is an unusual experience for individuals with disabilities.” The future holds many exciting prospects for the team, with The Special Olympics National Games being held in 2021. Although they may be young at the moment, Jemima plans to have a team of her swimmers competing in the games to a high level. It is also expected that more of the swimmers will begin training with the mainstream squad when they are ready. “I will never let Stingrays fold.” Jemima’s training over the years has led her to become an official Level 2 Swim Teacher and Level 1 Coach. She has not only developed essential life and career skills but become a valuable part of the community. She humbly told us of what coaching has taught her. “I have met some incredible young people. I have learnt so much from them, I admire their ability of not being afraid to be different and to smash through barriers and show people what they are capable of.”

Stuck for a New Year r ideas that could point yo You’re never too old to make a positive change in your life, and there’s lots going on in Tadcaster that can help you begin to make that change while also having some fun! New Year’s resolutions don’t have to always be about losing weight or getting fit. Here are just a few ideas 1. ENROL ON A WEA ADULT LEARNING CLASS WEA is a national charity that provides affordable adult learning courses in local communities and is the UK’s largest voluntary sector provider of adult education. Not only can you learn about history, modern languages and personal development skills but you can make new friends, widen your horizons and build your confidence to take a rewarding part in other community activities. Many people who claim Jobseeker’s Allowance are eligible for free courses. You can enrol or find out more by visiting www.wea.org.uk or calling 0300 303 3464. 2. JOIN THE U3A If you are retired you might like to join in one of the activities being set up by the newly formed Tadcaster and Villages U3A. They meet up on the third Monday of the month at 1pm in The Barn
Page 10
or you can email secretary1tadu3a@gmail.com for more information 3. GIVE BACK TO SUPPORT YOUNG PEOPLE Tadcaster has many youth organisations who depend on adult volunteers as well as children to provide a wealth of activities and opportunities for young people. Perhaps you once benefitted from such organisations like the Brownies, Guides, Cubs or Scouts. Just up the road there’s the 2434 Squadron Church Fenton Air Cadets. There are also youth groups that focus on helping children with physical or learning difficulties such as Stingrays at the Swimming Pool or Spectrum at The Barn. If you have children maybe you could stay with them at their club occasionally and share their fun. 4. GET ACTIVE You don’t have to be a world-class cyclist or

resolution? Here are 8 ou in the right direction premiership footballer to take part in sport in Tadcaster, although we have had a few of those recently. We are lucky enough to have a great community swimming pool, which relies on volunteer support, and a leisure centre which offers a wide range of activities including football. If dancing is more your thing then you could try one of the classes at the Riley Smith Hall. 5. BECOME MORE ENVIRONMENTALLY AND COMMUNITY AWARE There are a number of recycling points around Tadcaster as well as the big one in the trading estate and Sainsbury’s. Tadcrafters collect “gently used” bras, Costcutter collects shoes, and Simply a Party collects postage stamps. If you are guilty of dropping litter or not picking up your dog’s waste, there will be many people who would benefit from you stopping this habit in 2020! 6. TAKE AN INTEREST Tadcaster Local History Society meets on the first Thursday of the month at the Methodist Church at 7.30pm. Meetings are always very well attended because the talks are interesting and informative.
7. SHOP LOCALLY We have some fantastic local independent businesses in Tadcaster. Have you visited them all to find out what’s on your doorstep? As a community we need to support them. 8. GET HELP If you are struggling to find motivation, perhaps a friendly chat with the people at Stepping Stone might be able to point you in the right direction. Find out more information about the activities in Tadcaster from the Ark, Stepping Stone in Kirkgate or The Barn on St. Joseph’s Street. 2019 has been a very busy year for us at Jigsaws We have spent a lot of time investing in our new outdoor area, new outdoor learning classroom – the Tree House and creating a wonderful environment for our children. Our aim to nurture, inspire, challenge and enthuse our children, indoors and outdoors, to support an active and healthy lifestyle both physically and through good mental health. To give children an appreciation of nature and the environment- allowing children to interact with the elements around us and help them to gain an understanding of the world we live in. Develops social skills - giving children a mixture of indoor & outdoor learning experiences, offering them a chance to talk about what they have done with their friends, teachers and parents. To encourage independence by being outdoors gives children the sense of freedom to make discoveries by themselves. They’ll begin to understand what they can do by themselves and develop a ‘can do ‘attitude, which will act as a solid foundation for future learning. Jigsaws will continue to build on this in 2020, so we thank all our families for your support and look forward to meeting new families during next year.

Tadcaster’s Coach and back to the community Brewing Good Cheer C Tadcaster locals’ favourite pub has once again worked to combat social isolation and loneliness during the festive season through hosting a community lunch, in partnership with Heineken’s Brewing Good Cheer Campaign and Chapelfields’ Community Hub The community lunch, which took place on the 27th November, hosted 20 members of the community who were served Christmas dinner and enjoyed the festive spirit like everyone else. Georgie Slintoss, bar supervisor at the Coach and Horses, spoke to us about how important the lunches are to the community and what role the pub plays in delivering the campaign each year.
For a fourth year Heineken have led Brewing Good Cheer, which is a campaign that celebrates the positive role pubs play in communities in bringing people together. Together with licensees from Star Pubs & Bars and local charities, they have aimed to host over 100 lunches for hundreds of people around the UK who might not often get the chance to go to their local. A chat over a beer, a lunch or a mince pie can be a small thing, but for some, it can make a huge difference. The Coach and Horses is the only Tadcaster pub who has taken part in the campaign this year, and it was its third year partaking since Heineken invited it to jump on board three years ago in 2016 at a meeting in Tadcaster’s Brewery.
Page 14
As the campaign is organised to prevent social isolation for people around the festive season, Georgie explained which people benefit the most from this. “It’s mainly elderly people who benefit the most, as they can get very lonely at Christmas time so this is a chance for them to all get together and celebrate. “The people that have attended the lunches in the past have always been non-regulars, which shows that they would not usually get a chance to be in that situation of belonging or togetherness.” She added that the lunches aren’t meant exclusively for the elderly, as the Coach and Horses openly welcomes anyone to join, including the homeless. “It’s important to host community groups like this over the festive period because we all get to celebrate with our families and forget that there may be others who don’t get the chance to, so it’s
Issue 46 - December/January 2020
d Horses gives y in its third Campaign nice for them to come and be around people, feel supported and feel part of something. “A elderly man and woman at our very first community lunch got talking and realised they both had dogs. They have walked their dogs together ever since which is lovely to see.”
These Christmas lunches are not just fleeting encounters for members who attend, and the campaign’s work has proven this Georgie shared a wonderful story from the very first year of the pub’s inaugural campaign launch back in 2016. “An elderly man and woman at our very first community lunch got talking and realised they both had dogs. They have walked their dogs together ever since which is lovely to see. “Similarly, a few of the previous dinner attendees already knew each other from going to Sunday Church service together, so they now also come and have lunch here at The Coach and Horses after Church Service sometimes.” Pubs have long been a great way of bringing people together, and Georgie explained how The Coach and Horses remains to extend a specially warm welcome to all of its locals by being versatile. “What makes us a special part of the community is that we’re very versatile; we’re welcoming to kids and are family orientated - we also accept dogs inside. These are all important factors in such a small town.” For more information on all initiatives, visit https://www.neighbourly. com/BrewingGoodCheer2019 Visit The Coach and Horses Tadcaster on Facebook for pub information or call 01937 834888

This month, Business Support Specialist Heidi Green talks about the pros and cons of remote working
Remote working According to the Office for National Statistics there are over 4 million people working remotely in the UK and it is believed this is on the rise. Here are some of the benefits for you to consider. It can increase productivity as many people feel more comfortable in their own environment, there are also less distractions than those who are office based. Many people, rightly, stay away from work with colds and flu, not wishing to spread the germs, but do feel well enough to work so this is another winning situation. It is also beneficial for members of your workforce to continue adding value to your business
Page 16
without the pressures of other commitments stopping them working. You may need smaller offices and introduce a hot-desking way of working; it can also reduce utility bills and travel expenses. However, some staff do not like remote working, they miss their colleagues and the office “banter so a happy medium needs to be agreed. It can also be difficult to maintain the company culture when people are away from the office and the team can become harder to nurture. For further advice contact Heidi Green, Senior Business Advisor for Selby District Council via email at hgreen@selby.gov.uk or telephone 01757 292332.

This month’s column, courtesy of the Jobcentre, focuses on the opportunities in retail that pop up for the festive period and
Christmas opportunities in retail how you can find them
At this time of year many retailers are looking to recruit extra staff in the lead-up to Christmas. If you’re keen on getting into retail or just looking to earn some extra cash, here are some tips to help you bag a job. Most national retail organisations’ website include jobs or careers portals. A simple online search using the organisation name or brand followed by the word ‘jobs’ will find these. Careersbox website contains short videos about a number of retail organisations aimed at those aged 24 and under. By viewing these people of any age can increase their awareness and knowledge of the retail sector and better target their job search. Some national retail organisations organise
schemes that support specific circumstances. For example, organisations that seek older workers have been well publicised, and Timpson is a recognised leader in recruitment of ex-offenders. Researching specialist websites about working in retail can provide CV hints and tips and information about core skills and behaviours required for retail roles. A simple internet search such as ‘tips for working in retail’ is a good start. As well as listing their current vacancies many national retail organisations provide an opportunity to register an interest in working for them on the careers pages of their websites. People can demonstrate their commitment to finding jobs with these organisations by creating personal profiles, uploading their CVs and/or registering
their interest to work in new stores. Often this is the first place these employers will look when new job vacancies become available. Most national retail organisations use Twitter and Facebook to post recruitment updates and company news. People following employers on social media will benefit from information on recruitment campaigns, company insight, and will be able to demonstrate which employers they are following. Following local Jobcentre plus Twitter accounts and the national DWP Knowledge Hub @JCPJobsPlusMore on Twitter will help you find good retailbased accounts to follow. NB - Remember - be safe online and clean up your online personal profiles before following any potential employers.

Tadcaster Albion’s new arrival Former Brighouse Town boss Paul Quinn named as new Tadcaster Albion manager Tadcaster Albion recently welcomed former Brighouse Town boss Paul Quinn to take the reins as their new manager.
Tuesday 12th November and before that attended their home match against Markse United on 9th November.
This followed Curtis Woodhouse’s departure from Tadcaster to take up the role as manager of Gainsborough Trinity in October earlier this year.
Quinn said: “I am delighted to have been appointed as manager of Tadcaster. This is a club I have admired from a distance for a number of years and when the opportunity presented itself it was not a difficult decision to accept.
Paul Quinn has come to Albion with a wealth of experience already under his belt, with vast previous experience in management, having taken charge of over 400 matches, including spells at Brighouse and Shaw Lane. Quinn sealed the promotion to the Northern Premier League Division One North in 2013/14 after winning the Northern Counties East League premier division title. Quinn officially took charge of the club on

“Naturally when a manager leaves any club there is a period of transition and I would like to personally thank Michael Ingham and Steve Waide who did a brilliant job over that period. “I am really looking forward to getting to know the players and helping the club to build on a positive start to the campaign.” May it carry on that way, Paul!
