warded bronze at ner Choice Awards! After the loss of Vince Rodger, the owner of Woodhaven, in a tragic motorcycle accident in May, the Rodger family were determined to continue helping animals. Sorell, Vince’s daughter, told Tadcaster Echo: “He was and still remains our inspiration behind the effort we put into saving as many animals as we can. We hope to make him proud with our hard work as we continue to help more animals than ever.” In November, the Woodhaven team was awarded bronze for the ‘There when you need them’ award at Minster FM’s Listener Choice Awards 2018. Sorell adds: “We cannot thank everyone enough for the amazing support as without you we cannot continue to provide a second chance for animals in need. The girls work so hard, I’m delighted it’s been recognised. “We should be celebrating this victory with Vince, but we hope he is proud.” Woodhaven aims to provide a high level of care for all the animals who visit or stay. The dedicated and passionate team all have experience in assessing and rehabilitating those animals in desperate need of love and affection. “The animals are always our main priority, whether this be a boarding dog or cat or an animal looking for a home. Our wonderful staff always go above and beyond for each and every animal and their owners.” Woodhaven also often helps people who have fallen

on hard times or during emergencies by taking in their pets, often at short notice. A 24-hour care service is available to people who have either lost or found a pet. Woodhaven’s doors are always open with a bed and meal ready! “We will always take in strays from our area. We have also taken in cats who are in desperate need of help and their families are unable to get help elsewhere. “We work with Selby’s dog warden and take in all the Selby District strays. We know that every dog has the perfect home waiting for them, just some take a little longer to find it. “We feel we give the dogs the best start in their new homes, they are all vet checked, flead, wormed, vaccinated and neutered where possible to stop more dogs needing homes.” Lucy Oxberry has been at Woodhaven since 2014 and became manager this May after Vince passed away. Lucy says: “It’s been a really tough year but we are stronger than ever and have so many exciting plans for the future. There’s never a dull moment working at Woodhaven. I love getting to know both the stray dogs and the boarding dogs and cats. I absolutely love working for the Rodger family and couldn’t imagine my life without Woodhaven and the team.” For more information on Woodhaven Kennels, visit www.woodhavenkennels.co.uk

Tadcrafters win Community Group of the Year! Local community interest company, Tadcrafters, won Community Group of the Year at the Yorkshire Post Rural Awards 2018, beating off stiff competition from across the region Lynne Howard and Su Morgan, directors of the not-for-profit group, accepted the award on behalf of everyone involved in Tadcrafters. Tadcasters CIC is a community group based in Tadcaster that turn recycled and reused materials into craftwork then gives them away to worthy causes. Director, Su Morgan, told Tadcaster Echo: “We are delighted to have received this award as it recognises the hard work done by all the Tadcrafters. We are all volunteers, our reward is knowing that we are appreciated and that we can make a difference to people’s lives.” The group was created after Tadcaster was devastated by flooding in December 2015, causing the town’s bridge to collapse. Su adds: “After the clear-up there was very little people could do to help until the buildings dried out. I thought that by getting a group of people

Page 10

together to make bunting it would keep the community spirit alive as well as cheer the place up a bit.” Since then, the Tadcrafters CIC have been creating crafts such as hundreds of metres of bunting to celebrate the opening of community projects, the Queen’s 90th birthday and Tour De Yorkshire. Just some of their charity work includes 300 bags for St Leonard’s Hospice, 100 washable feminine hygiene kits for girls in developing countries, over 150 twiddlemuffs to help to calm people with dementia and over 70 heart-shaped cushions for breast surgery patients. Over 3,500 poppies were made for displays in Selby Abbey and the Riley Smith Hall in November for the WWI 100-year commemorations. The group regularly meets 10am-4pm on the second Tuesday of each month at Manor Farm Centre in Tadcaster. New volunteers are welcome. For more information visit www.tadcrafters.org.uk

Totally Polished has moved to a new salon! In November the salon moved to its new home on Tadcaster high street The salon, which is situated on 43 Kirkgate, will be moving to a bigger premises at No 15 on the high street. Over the last three years, Totally Polished has gained a respectable reputation and now has three therapists. The original salon will now be closing but don’t fear, you can still get all your favourite treatments, just round the corner! But back in October, Totally Polished was unfortunately targeted twice by burglars. Owner, Ffion says: “It was a horrific experience made even worse because we had to go through it twice. Moving to our new premises couldn’t have come at a better time. The incident has only made

us more aware and made us up our security.” The new, bigger salon will have a larger treatment range and a new therapist has joined the team. Ffion adds: “I have new and exciting plans for the salon, but most of all keeping the same experience for clients that we are known for. “We are still in the heart of Tadcaster and can’t wait to show you all the hard work that’s been put into this move with lots of new and exciting treats in store for you!” For more information on Totally Polished and the treatments it offers, visit the Facebook page, Totally Polished Tadcaster.

COMMUNITY COMES TOGETHER TO HELP LOCAL SWIMMER The Tadcaster & Villages Forum (CEF) have helped a local swimmer become a fully qualified coach Jemima Browning has completed the Swim England Level 1 and 2 qualifications and is now a fully qualified swimming teacher and coach. She is now employed by Tadcaster Swimming Pool Trust and is one of the qualified coaches for the Tadcaster Stingrays Swim Club. The CEF provided funding of £1,000 to help her qualify.

without disabilities receive. I aim to promote equality, change negative perceptions and increase opportunities for people with disabilities using sport as a catalyst. I love teaching swimming because of the difference I see both in the water and out. The widespread positive benefits that learning a sport in a supportive, accepting and fun environment is truly astounding.”

Jemima was the driving force behind the setting up of the Stingrays Club. Starting just over two years ago with two swimmers, it now boasts 13 swimmers of different ages and different disabilities between the ages of 11 and 18 years. The group’s aim is to provide a swim training session for older children who have a disability and can swim 25 metres but wish to continue swimming for fitness and stroke technique.

Fiona Garnett, Swimming Development Manager, said, “Jemima has shown a special passion for teaching older teenagers with disabilities. I have never come across such a delightful, thoughtful, inspiring and driven young person who is changing the lives of others for the better.”

Jemima commented: “I’ve always been very passionate that people with disabilities of all ages deserve the same opportunities that people

Page 16

Cllr Richard Sweeting, chair of the Tadcaster CEF commented, “I’d like to congratulate Jemima for her achievement. From starting the swimming club in the first place, to building on that as a young adult and having the determination to achieve this qualification.”

Last month we had the first instalment of a series of questions commonly asked by employers at Universal Credit events. We carry on this month with more questions that regularly get asked

Universal Credit: questions & answers part two How will Universal Credit be paid to claimants?

to report their earnings themselves.

In most cases Universal Credit is a single, monthly payment which is paid in arrears into the claimant’s account.

How long will someone have to wait for their benefit if their earnings change?

Couples living in the same household receive one monthly payment between them.

Universal Credit is paid monthly in arrears and is designed to automatically adjust depending on the amount someone earns in that time.

Payments include eligible housing costs and households are responsible for managing their own rent payments. What happens when someone on Universal Credit starts work? They must inform DWP who records this, then the PAYE sends automatically as soon as it is received from the claimant’s employer. People with more than one job don’t normally need to inform DWP as the information comes through automatically. Self-employed workers need

If earnings reduce in their assessment period then payments will be higher. If earnings increase, payment will be reduced to reflect the higher earnings. How does Universal Credit operate when someone works irregular hours? Universal Credit deals with changes in earnings and irregular earnings. It will not end when earnings increase, unless earnings are high enough to leave Universal Credit altogether.

PAYE information from the employer means that Universal Credit payments adjust automatically. How does Universal Credit work alongside Autoenrolment? Auto enrolment into a Workplace Pension isn’t linked to Universal Credit. What tax code should we put Universal Credit claimants on? Universal Credit claimants should use their existing tax code. How does Universal Credit work with benefits in kind? Universal Credit won’t initially take ‘benefits in kind’ (employee benefits that do not take the form of money) into account. For further information on Universal Credit, visit www.gov.uk/universal-credit

This month, Business Support Specialist Heidi Green discusses how important it is to have a plan in place for if something happens to your business

Expect the unexpected Business continuity and planning is just as important for small companies as it is for large corporations. Plans do not need to be complicated but comprehensive and tailored to the needs of the organisation.

you can resume “business as usual.

Employers have a responsibility to their staff for their safety and security. 40% of business affected by the Manchester bombing never re-opened.

2. Recovery phase - who does what to get the business back up and running?

It could be flooding, fire, electricity failures, cyber attack, loss of key personnel, negative publicity or a main supplier going out of business. You have to consider how quickly

Page 22

The plan can be split into two elements: 1. Incident Management phase – who is responsible for protecting people and property?

Ensure you have a map of the building layout to help emergency services showing fire escapes, extinguishers etc. Think about media relations, who will deal with the enquiries. Ensure you have details of your insurance company available.

Community coming together to renovate school’s garden The Osgoldcross & Elmet Rotary are supporting Sherburn Hungate Primary School with the renovation of their overgrown wildlife area The project aims to create a usable space to perform and tell stories, as well as connect students to where food comes from and learn about the growing of seeds. The garden aims to help children learn about nature and animals whilst also having a calming place where they can relax. The idea for this project started after the Rotary club visited the school to present children in Year 5 with pictorial dictionaries. Whilst there, chairman of the club, June, had a tour of the school grounds. One area which stood out, for the wrong reasons, was a patch called the wildflower garden which was overgrown and out of bounds for the children. June wanted to help renovate this area but has also appealed for other organisations to help with this project. Since then, many people in the community have given a helping hand in putting some wellneeded love back into the school’s outside area.

Many volunteers have given up their time on weekends or donated materials to help with the repairs and new elements of the garden. One of the new features in the garden will be a plastic bottle greenhouse which will aim to teach the children the values and benefits in recycling and how you can re-use plastics to good use. Mark Lovett from Osgoldcross & Elmet Rotary Club, said: “We are encouraging students to collect as many plastic bottles as possible. When we have enough, we hope as many of the children help with putting the greenhouse together.” The Rotary club are always grateful for any help they receive, so if you would like to get involved or donate some 2-litre plastic bottles to the project, please visit Sherburn Hungate School Garden Project on Facebook. Weekly newsletters are also posted on this page about the group’s journey on giving the school a perfect garden!

Meet the Tadcaster Harriers Tadcaster Harriers is a thriving running club who meet once a week for organised training sessions. The club also regularly competes in road, cross country, trail and ultra races If you are looking for a new hobby, the Harriers always encourage new people to join the family. Meeting on Tuesday and Thursday nights at Tadcaster Magnets Sport and Social Club, you don’t need to be a experienced runner, just bring your running shoes. The most recent events saw some of the Harriers take on their first marathon at York University. First home though was experienced marathon runner Ian Ward who finished comfortably in three hours and 32 minutes, taking fifth place in his age group too. Donna Avery was first Harrier lady in her marathon debut, with a time of four hours 46 minutes. Members Jon and Shirley Steele organise a very successful series of trail running events based on and around the North Yorkshire Moors and

Cleveland Way. The most recent race took place at the scenic village of Osmotherley near Thirsk. Celia McRoyall, a fellow Harrier came first in her age group. Each year, Tadcaster Harriers supports a different charity. This year the chosen charities are ‘Special Care Baby Unit at York Hospital’ and ‘Action on Pre-Eclampsia’ which are both charities close to the heart of sponsor, and Harrier member, Sophie Overfield. More information on this charity and Sophie’s story can be found on the Harriers webpage http://www.tadcasterharriers.org.uk/charity/ charity-of-the-year-2019.html For more information on Tadcaster Harriers and upcoming events, visit www. tadcasterharriers.org.uk

TADCASTER ALBION LAUNCHES ITS OWN LOTTERY It takes a lot to run an amateur sports club these days with most relying on volunteers and subs. So, Tadcaster Albion AFC have created their very own lottery in which you could potentially win a mighty £25,000 jackpot Sports Club Lottery is designed to help amateur sports clubs across the country raise the money they need to participate and support their teams at all levels. This lottery is the perfect way to support the Brewers whilst also having the chance to win money. The money generated will help towards upgrading the changing rooms, sheltered pitch-side stands and health and safety improvements. You can play from as little as £1 per week and must aged 16 or over. Each club is guaranteed 50% of the total ticket sales from their lottery.

Andy Charlesworth, chairman of the club, told Tadcaster Echo: “ It’s a great way to support your local non-league football club. Please make a difference by supporting your local football club, we need your support both on match days and to progress further with our facility maintenance and development, we cannot do it without your support.” Why not get involved, spread the word and maybe win some money! The lottery ticket can be purchased by going to sportsclublottery.com/clubpage/?SocCode=TADCA or by filling in the flyer which can be found at the ground on match days.

HOROSCOPES Dec/Jan Issue 40 - December/January 2019

Aquarius

(20th Jan-18th Feb) Have you been spending too much? Make a weekly contribution to a savings account. It’s time to correct the financial imbalance in your life.

Pisces

(19th Feb-20th March) Resist the temptation to pry. You may be the person everyone comes to for gossip, but you can’t compromise your reputation for the sake of popularity.

Aries

Gemini

(21st May-20th June) Respect a loved one’s privacy. The less you try to inject yourself into a friend’s life, the more welcoming they will be.

Cancer

(21st June- 22nd July) Whether you sign a new client or are offered a job, you will return home with a big smile on your face. It feels great when people admire your ideas.

Leo

Libra

(23rd Sept-22nd Oct) Negative feedback is discouraging, but it shouldn’t cause you to quit. Be kind and gentle with yourself as you make another attempt.

Scorpio

(23rd Oct-21st Nov) You don’t like the same activities as your romantic partner. That shouldn’t be a deal breaker for your relationship. You can pursue your hobbies separately.

Sagittarius

(21st March-19th April) Being loud and forceful will backfire! A calm, gentle approach will command respect and give you the power you want.

(23rd July-22nd Aug) You readily give your honest opinion. This can hurt a sensitive person’s feelings, but it’s not your fault. You never deliver criticism in a malicious way.

(22nd Nov-21st Dec) Time to forgive someone who had betrayed you. Practising mercy doesn’t mean condoning bad behaviour; it simply involves releasing someone’s hold on you.

Taurus

Virgo

Capricorn

(20th April-20th May) Trust your instinct, even when it goes against conventional wisdom. If you feel something is right, go with it. Your innate wisdom is right on target, as always.

(23rd Aug-22nd Sept) You usually retaliate at any opportunity. Remaining calm and biting your tongue is sometimes the better option to keep your friendships.

(22nd Dec-19th Jan) Listen to uplifting music, make a gratitude list or recall some happy memories. Chasing away the shadows will attract love, luck and prosperity.
