IT’S bravo for The Barn!

Following on from their two prestigious tourism award wins back in December 2019, we thought we would catch up with Kevin and Faye Coles and find out a bit more about them and their medieval barn in Monk Fryston, Selby

Faye and Kevin Coles were absolutely delighted with picking up their awards - and they insist both were largely down to the great customer service they pride themselves upon.

Even though a couple of months have passed since, the pair are still feeling euphoric. Faye told us: “The standard of entries and competition were extremely high in The White Rose Awards so we are still feeling really thrilled.

“The ROSE Awards stands for Recognition Of Service Excellence – and great customer service

is central to everything we do in The Barn. Only 100 hospitality venues are awarded this accolade per year via secret nomination by a Visit England Assessor.”

Kevin and Faye are particularly proud to have won Best Guest House in Yorkshire as the other competitors were all rated five-star gold and they were the only four-star gold guest house on the shortlist!

To make their customers’ visits extra special the Coles try to cater for every customer’s individual needs and give them a great ‘Yorkshire’ welcome.

A ‘Yorkshire’ welcome The bedrooms in the B&B are luxuriously decked out with giant top-of-the-range beds, homemade chocolates and biscuits to snack on, copious amounts of high-quality toiletries, soft bath robes and complimentary slippers. Guests also enjoy the benefits of room safes, air conditioning, windows fitted with acoustic glass, rainforest showers and a well-stocked drinks tray.

Special diets are also catered for on request such as vegan, vegetarian, gluten free and milk free.

Customers staying at the B&B for a special occasion can expect special touches in the room such as flowers and chocolates. The husband and wife team also offer a taxi service to local venues free of charge!

In the little time the Coles have off from work, they enjoy spending time with friends and family, exploring the Yorkshire Dales, and sampling the wonderful food and ambience of Bettys Café in

York or Harrogate. Talking about Bettys, Faye said: “Perhaps this is where we learnt that very high standards are integral to a successful business!”

A medieval history Monk Fryston has a long and interesting history and is mentioned in the Domesday Book as belonging to the Archbishop of York due to its many farmsteads and fertile farming land.

The medieval Barn dates from the year 1350, and was part of one such farmstead. During its renovation, a medieval pot was discovered beneath the original part of the barn. Historically, such pots were filled with human blood or clothing in order to lure witches into them. They were then plugged with herbs and buried under the threshold of new buildings to bring good luck to the owners – with the witches trapped and buried beneath!

The Lemon Tr

Earlier this year a tea room in the heart of Tadcaster reopened under new ownership. The Lemon Tree on High Street, which is now in the hands of Jane and Geoff Derham, has reportedly had a positive start to the year and we decided to speak to Jane to find out more about her new venture, a ‘lifelong’ dream of hers Jane and Geoff Derham from Selby welcomed back customers old and new when they reopened the much-loved cafe on January 8th.

Jane, whose dream has always been to run her own tea room, shared with us how the cafe has been bustling with custom since opening day. “I couldn’t wait to get going and to welcome everyone through the door, and since we opened it’s been very busy. We’ve had lots of good feedback and reviews which is really positive.”

Although the name ‘Lemon Tree’ has remained the same for the tea room, there have been several changes to the menu under the new owners.

Jane told us that they are focusing more on light bites, platters and homemade cake (which look absolutely delicious!).

And it seems the new menu is attracting new customers, not just regulars, as Jane told us a lot of people who had never been before have been turning up for lunch.

Jane was diagnosed as coeliac in the summer of 2015 and quickly discovered that eating out came with issues. She wanted to create a dining experience that wouldn’t exclude coeliacs such as herself from being able to enjoy a meal out.

Jane talked about achieving her dream of opening a tea room: “Nothing ever worked out or fell into place until we stumbled upon the Lemon Tree.

“It’s been a lot busier than I ever expected, but also really exciting. The staff here at The Lemon Tree and my family have been so supportive and helpful over the last few weeks so I really couldn’t have done it without them. It’s been all hands on deck!”

Jane’s Husband, Geoff, has also been helping with the washing-up at the cafe despite having his own business to attend to during the week. Jane told us he has always liked to joke that nobody ever leaves their house hungry and unsatisfied, and that this is the same goal for The Lemon Tree!

There is a saying you have probably heard before: “You don’t build a business, you build people and then people build the business.”

This is true but the question is then asked “What happens if we invest in developing our people and they then leave us?” The reply should be “What happens if we don’t invest in them and they stay?”

This month’s column, courtesy of the Jobcentre, focuses on Modern Slavery, how to spot the signs and what you should do if you or someone you know is affected by it

Modern Slavery

Could you spot the signs?

• Have you been approached by strangers offering food, alcohol, drugs or shelter?

• Have you been offered work that sounds too good to be true?

• Are you working for, or have you been offered work, for little or no wages?

• Has someone taken your personal belongings or documents?

• Are you being forced to engage in criminal or sexual activity?

• Have you noticed people suddenly disappearing from the streets?

If the answer is yes to any of these questions, you could be at risk of exploitation.

Exploiters often try to recruit people at day centres, night shelters and at soup kitchens.

They promise cash in hand work, alcohol, drugs, and accommodation which usually turn out to be false. Different methods will then be used to prevent someone from escaping or reporting to the police. You are at a higher risk if you are offered work in hand car washes, agriculture work, factory work or construction. If you are being forced to engage in criminal or sexual activity, this is also exploitation.

Think you might be being exploited?

• Speak to a support worker or someone from a registered homeless charity.

• Strangers seen talking to people outside shelters and then showing them to a vehicle.

• Call the police on 101 or anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

• Someone offering you work or other things, but then arranges an alternative meeting place to pick you up, which is away from your current location.

• Report your concerns to the Modern Slavery Helpline on 08000 121 700.

• Always call 999 if you are in immediate danger.

• Someone you have not seen on the streets before and
