GOING POPPY!
Tadcrafters put together a huge poppy wall hanging to hang in Selby Abbey to mark the end of World War 1 in November this year Over the last few months the knitters at Tadcrafters have been busy making thousands of poppies to support the Selby Abbey commemorations for the end of World War 1 in November this year.
Whilst sewing on a poppy, one of the air cadets said to me she was so proud of her grandma who had knitted hundreds of them, despite struggling with Parkinson’s and rheumatism, in honour of the fallen.”
They have made a five-metre long wall hanging completely covered in the knitted and crocheted poppies, which will form part of a much larger hanging to adorn Selby Abbey. Many people from different community groups have joined in to help, including the Church Fenton Air Cadets and members of the public at the Tadcaster Community Discovery Day.
“In total there were 1,469 poppies, I know because I counted them all!” said Lynne Howard, from Tadcrafters, who organised and co-ordinated the making of it. “We are looking forward to seeing it hanging from Selby Abbey in November where it will form part of a really spectacular display along with lots more made by other groups of knitters in Selby in conjunction with the British Legion. We are also planning on making a smaller display with more poppies for us to keep in Tadcaster for the commemorations.”
Su Morgan of Tadcrafters said: “It has been a rewarding opportunity for many people of different generations to contribute and help remember the sacrifice and suffering of so many.

New scooter shelter for ambitious primary school PTA and other local organisations work together to provide a much-needed scooter shelter at growing school Bramham Primary School pupils can now jump on their scooters or bikes to school thanks to a brand new scooter shelter on the school grounds. The school’s PTA, Friends of Bramham School, or FOBS for short, asked representatives from the school council’s different year groups what they would like and were told that the children had wanted a scooter shelter for several years. Georgina Mills, chair of FOBS, said: “The school has grown significantly in recent years and there was only an inadequate rack for bikes and scooters. I met with the parish councils of Bramham and neighbouring Clifford and asked if they could support us in funding the new scooter shelter as it would help reduce pressure
8
from car parking and congestion on local roads. They offered £500 each. I also approached the Wetherby Lions Group as they’re very supportive in the area. We received £1,000 from them and another £400 from Leeds Festival’s Bramham Community Fund.” Overall, FOBS raised £2,400 from grants and a further £1,200 from organised events supported by parents in order to fund the much-wanted addition to the school. Georgina said: “We invited representatives from each group who had supported our project to our official opening, presenting thank you cards that the children had made. Two of the school council children cut the ribbons. We were really proud seeing the end result.”

JIGSAWS CHILDCARE RECEIVES MILLIE’S MARK – A NEW QUALITY MARK Jigsaws Childcare Ltd announced that it has received national recognition for going above and beyond the minimum requirements in paediatric first aid. Jigsaws are the first nursery within the Rural Selby and Selby area to be awarded Millie’s Mark. With its robust processes and documentation, the nursery staff strive to keep children safe by minimising risks and accidents and giving parents that greater reassurance. Jigsaws Childcare has been awarded Millie’s Mark by National Day Nurseries Association in collaboration with Department for Education and Millie’s Trust. Millie’s Mark demonstrates that nurseries have many criteria in addition it shows they work hard to keep these crucial first aid skills in the forefront of employees’ minds, so they are competent and can apply paediatric first aid in any situation.
Helen Smith, Business Manager comments: “We are so proud of how Jigsaws has grown and developed over the last ten years and that through all these changes and Government policies we have continued to achieve ‘Good’ in all our Ofsted inspections. In addition we are absolutely thrilled to have been awarded Millie’s Mark. These are all special achievements and show how serious our practitioners take their role in nurturing, inspiring and teaching to ensure all children are safe when they are in our care. I would like to thank everyone who has supported us and we are all looking forward to celebrating our success.” Purnima Tanuku, Chief Executive of National Day Nurseries Association (NDNA) adds: “Achieving Millie’s Mark is a great achievement for the nursery, it shows that all staff are fully trained in paediatric first aid and that they have reflected on their current practice to improve competence and confidence. Becoming a Millie’s Mark’s nursery is a clear indicator for parents that this nursery has met the highest standards and gives them the reassurance that their children are safe’.

re-open the Old Girls’ School later this year. Competition for this funding was very tough as the fund received 90 applications from community groups all over Yorkshire.”
The award has been made by Efficiency North, a social housing consortium, whose EN:Able Community Investment Fund has, during the past six years, given more than £600,000 to boost community projects across the Yorkshire region.
Sherburn-in-Elmet Community Trust was originally formed by the Parish Council in order to support the Friends of the Old Girls’ School to keep the building open for community use. Plans now include a community cafe, which will be open six days a week, a business centre supporting local people launching new ventures and a training centre to help residents who are looking for a job or those that want to learn new skills.

This month, Business Support Specialist Heidi Green discusses the benefits of a business coach
What could a business coach do for you? No matter how successful you are in your business, none of us have all the answers. Knowing when to ask for help and who to ask can be challenging itself. Firstly, take a step back and spend some time thinking about where your business is going instead of rushing around trying to be all things to all men. Next, start working on your business, not in it. Just an hour a week in the planning
process can make all the difference. No matter if you employ people, work in partnership or on your own, being a business owner can be a very lonely place. Who do you have to turn to for reassurance? Can you see the wood for the trees? Are you taking advantage of all the opportunities that you come across and if not why not? Quite often business owners have the aspiration to achieve great things but lack the confidence to do them, but having a

Why do an apprenticeship? This month, we spoke to Jobcentreplus to find out all about the benefits of taking up an apprenticeship What’s in it for me? • You can earn while you learn • You won’t rack up any debts associated with going to university. • You will get practical, relevant experience and training. • You will be supported and guided throughout. • You will build up your CV and gain real experience. • You will get a recognised, relevant qualification. Am I eligible? You can apply for an apprenticeship whilst you are still at school. To start one you need to be 16 or over, living in England and not in full-time education.

Spotlight on: Tadcaster Harriers Tadcaster Harriers was formed in 1983 and has been providing recreational running, training and racing ever since
Tadcaster Harriers is a small, friendly running club re-formed in 1983. It was inspired following interest in reviving the club, voiced by a group of runners who had taken part in the first Tadcaster 10-mile road race in May that year. The race had been organised by Tadcaster Methodist Church as a fundraiser for their rebuilding project. The ‘Tadcaster 10’ became an annual event and the race organisation was then taken over by the newly formed Tadcaster Harriers. The club hosts a number of races and is part of the York summer road league, a series of 10k races over the summer months. They meet every Tuesday and Thursday at Magnets Sports and Social Club at 6.45pm. Club Development Officer Andy Sloan said: “We also run a 10-week new beginners programme, which starts in March, with a number of qualified run leaders, working
34
in conjunction with UK athletics. “We have recently agreed for Henshaws to be the Harriers official charity of the year. We also assist with the Bramham Park Charity Run, usually hosted in October. “We have over 100 members and pretty much an even split between men and women of all abilities. We are really keen to attract new members and we are getting lots of people joining at the moment as well as a great deal of support for our annual beginners’ groups.” Club member Celia McRoyall, who ran the London Marathon last year with one of the Harriers’ places, added: “The Tadcaster Harriers is a very friendly and welcoming running club. Its members go out of their way to support and encourage runners of all abilities to achieve their running goals.” For further information, visit the website tadcasterharriers.org.uk
