Tadcaster pub hosts fundraiser for local The Coach and Horses pub in Tadcaster has raised £965 for a local man who has just undergone life-changing heart surgery The pub hosted a fundraising day, which saw many getting their bodies waxed, all in aid of local Kieran Smith. The money raised went towards Kieran’s family whilst he was unable to work. Local businesses also got involved, providing prizes for a raffle that took place on the day. Amongst other things, there was a cake stall and a clothes sale, the pub said.

Page 6

“It was a great day all round, all in aid of helping a local man with his heart surgery. The money was to help his family whilst he was unable to work. It

was fantastic to be a part of, and those who were waxed did the family proud. “We did a cake stall and had a secondhand clothes stall on the day as well. We would also like to thank local business for the prizes!” We spoke to Kieran’s mum following the operation, who told us he is now on the mend following his stay in hospital. “He is still in a lot of pain, but is now going to cardio physio twice

Issue 43 - June/July 2019

a week. I believe it is working, however, he is shattered afterwards! He has a little dog who he is gradually increasing the length of walks with. But of course, Kieran is having good and bad days, and often cannot sleep much at all because of the pain.” It is not the first time the pub has tried to give something back to the community - they brought a number of elderly people together earlier this year and offered them Sunday lunch. The pub has also received a certificate of excellence following its outstanding customer service, a feat they are appreciative of given their

tireless work around the clock. Following their generous gestures towards the local community, the Coach and Horses told us how important community work is, especially in a small town like Tadcaster. “We as a team are proud of how Tadcaster always pulls together to help each other, and everyone at the coach is glad we can be part of that. Being community friendly is hugely important, we love being a part of this town and love providing a great service to the people of Tadcaster and people who visit. We will carry on doing what we can to help people who need help if we can.

“Helping the elderly is something we do yearly, they all seem to really enjoy it and we enjoy having them!” From everyone at the Tadcaster Echo, we would like to firstly wish Kieran a speedy recovery, and congratulate the Coach and Horses staff for a superb fundraising effort.

Tadcaster Community Swimming Pool Trust receives national award Tadcaster Community Swimming Pool Trust, which is entering its 25th year of operation, is celebrating winning a national award for its volunteers

Three of the pool’s volunteers, Betty Toole, Christine Burton and Jackie Brown, who have been volunteering at the pool since it opened in 1994, attended the Community Leisure UK awards at the Lowry Theatre in Salford. Chris Porter, Facility Manager, Fiona Garnett, Volunteer Recruitment Manager, and Chris Hirst, Training and Operations Manager, were also present on the day, alongside the three ladies. The team’s tireless efforts have made the Tadcaster Community Swimming Pool a popular location in the area, something the group is very proud of. “With many larger facilities picking up awards in a variety of categories, it was with bated breath that we heard we were shortlisted to the final four. “As Betty rightly said in her acceptance speech, the award is for all our volunteers who give tirelessly to the pool in various roles including reception,

Page 12

lifeguarding, gardening, and maintenance. They received the loudest cheer and applause of the evening as they left the stage. “We are looking to recruit 25 new volunteers in celebration of our 25 years of operation. We will provide full training to all new members that wish to help us. It is a great opportunity to help the local community and work with our friendly team. “Our volunteers benefit from reduced Swim and Fitness suite prices, at just £1 per session. If you are interested in volunteering at the pool, please contact Fiona Garnett Volunteer Recruitment Manager – fiona@tadcasterpool.org.uk or Nick Foote, Volunteer Coordinator - nfoote@ tadcasterpool.org.uk or tel - 01937 833001. From everyone at the Tadcaster Echo, we would like to congratulate all the volunteers at the community swimming pool for their outstanding work!

Community raises £6,5 The Tadcaster community has pulled together to raise over £6,500, all in aid of local dog Merlin The seven-month-old Border collie suffered with hip dysplasia, meaning he struggled to walk and maintain a good quality of life. However, following the kind donations of the public, Merlin is now on the mend after his costly operation on the 17th May! The hip operation meant Merlin would have a much higher chance of living a pain-free life, an opportunity that owner Sammy could not turn down. Despite the large operation fee, Sammy was happy to go through with the process, however, required additional funds to go towards the cost. Sammy recently received the £6,500 figure just two months on from her appeal, and has spoken to us about how thankful she is for the local community. “I am absolutely delighted and humbled that the community has helped Merlin and I. I never

Page 16

imagined the bills would be so high, it is amazing how quickly the costs of scans and appointment rack up. “I felt I needed to give Merlin the best possible chance as the success rates of total hip replacements are also very high in a young dog. I am so thankful to each and every person that helped share the word, deliver posters and donated. You have literally all helped save my dog Merlin.” Following the operation Merlin has been taking things slow, with the expected recovery time roughly around 12 weeks. Sammy gave us an update on how he is coping after his big day at the vets. “He is struggling but this is to be expected. The operation was done on the 17th May and things are going to plan so far. The first four weeks are

500 for ‘Magical Merlin’ critical; this is when there is the highest chance of post-operative complications. I am doing all I can to reduce the risk but it is really difficult and very tiring.” Sammy also admitted at one stage she thought she was going to lose Merlin, making her even more thankful for each and every person who donated towards the cause.

all posted on his progress on Facebook, just search Magical Merlin’s Page.” Merlin will need his other hip replacing in the next eight months. If you would like to donate towards this you can. To donate, please visit gofundme.com and search for ‘Total Hip Replacement For Merlin’.

“I was prepared to say my goodbyes to him as heartbreaking as this would have been, however, when I found out there was a surgical solution which would give him an excellent quality of life, I had to find a way to raise the funds. This was when I asked for help from the community. “I want to personally extend a huge thank you to each of you who helped me - the result of which was saving Merlin’s life. I just did not have the money needed for his treatment. To raise what you did in such a short time was amazing! I am humbled and so thankful to you all. You are a wonderful community. I would like to especially thank the person who made the large anonymous donation to take me to the target. I will keep you Tadcaster Echo is brought to you by CreateTVT. Tel. 01937 326002

This month, Business Support Specialist Heidi Green covers all you need to know about Intellectual Property

WHAT IS INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY? Intellectual Property (often abbreviated to ‘IP’) is a term used to describe a wide range of property.

how the product works, what and how they do it, what they are made from and how they are made.

Unlike the products they protect, though, IP assets cannot be seen or touched. Therefore it is often difficult to appreciate just how valuable they are. Having a strong IP portfolio enhances the value of your business when it comes to investment opportunities, franchising and, of course, existing strategies.

Trademarks – protects your brand, your business name, product or service.

Think about this for your business, here are the different IPs for your consideration: Patents – protects new inventions, covering

Copyright – protects literature, artistic works, photographs, music, dramatic works, software, databases, films, radio and TV broadcasts. For further help, contact Heidi Green, Senior Business Advisor for Selby District Council via email at hgreen@selby.gov.uk or telephone 01757 292332.

Issue 43 - June/July 2019

This edition, we discuss the technicalities of the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA), with many being unfamiliar with the principles.

TOP TIPS FOR SMALL EMPLOYERS We cover some ‘basics’ that you need to remember to ensure that you meet your duties as an employer under the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) 1. Do take time to think about how the law will affect you. It is businesses that have given no thought to it at all, and have made no attempts to meet their duties, which are likely to end up discriminating. 2. Do consult a disabled person about any reasonable adjustments they might need to enable them to do the job. 3. Do talk with your staff about the DDA and the issues it raises. You will find that ‘putting your heads together’ can help you all to understand the issues and come up with solutions. 4. Do remember that if you employ a disabled person, you

are more likely to be able to respond to the needs of your disabled customers, because you will be familiar with some of the issues. 5. Do ask for advice – you are not expected to know everything all at once. You can also use other advice services like ACAS, the job centre, your local Business Link or Chamber of Commerce. 6. Do treat disabled people with respect and dignity. People may not ‘look’ or behave in a way that you are used to but they should still be treated as an equal. 7. Don’t assume that making reasonable adjustments will

cost lots of money – most cost nothing and the average is £75. Many adjustments are about doing things a little differently. Remember that you may be able to use Access to Work to pay for many adjustments. 8. Don’t be fearful of employing disabled people. Disabled people want to get a job and to do it well. You want skilled and good quality staff and the best person for the job may be a disabled person. If you do your best to make your work practices fair, everyone will benefit. Tadcaster Martial Arts School going the extra mile Situated in the heart of Tadcaster, the popular martial arts school provide high-quality training for those looking to get involved. Priding itself on bringing the best out of its students, the school is about ‘so much more’ than just martial arts Tadcaster Martial Arts is part of a larger group of schools, Martial Arts 4 U, which is headed up by the experienced Nicole Pratt who has previously competed in National and International Competitions. The Tadcaster School is headed up by lead instructor Kay Calvert who has been training for around seven years, having also competed at national competitions. With a host of other talented coaches at Tadcaster, the club told us that its students are taught more than martial arts. “Our school is about so much more than Martial Arts. We want to teach young people that respect, discipline and focus are just as important as having fun in our classes. We love having a community element and embracing the social side, we also have families that train with us which helps to give

Page 28

our schools their own family feel. “On top of this, getting fit is a great side effect to learning our skills. The focus of our ladies’ class is fitness as well as skills.” The group has a number of classes tailor-made for different age groups throughout the week, all taking place at the school on St Joseph’s Street in Tadcaster. There is a whole range of age groups attending classes. They start from three years, our Mini Dragons Classes are for 3-6 years, Ninja Kids Classes are for 7-11 years. There is also a teenspecific class for 12-16 years, then for adults, there is a regular class, Beginners and Ladies’ Beginners, so a complete range! HOROSCOPES June/July Issue 43 - June/July 2019

Aquarius

(20th Jan-18th Feb) Perhaps you are waiting for adventure to find you rather than searching yourself. You possess a burning ember to have fun, take advantage of that whilst you still can!

Pisces

(19th Feb-20th March) Struggling to find the right one for you. You may start to feel like it will never come. Hang in there; this month may just see you cross paths with the one right for you.

Aries

Gemini

(21st May-20th June) Your daily routine has become so accustomed to you that you seemingly have no time to try new things. Take a step out of your comfort zone once in a while.

Cancer

(21st June- 22nd July) Your efforts for others are admirable, but you may begin to realise not all people think like you. Remember to choose those closest to you wisely.

Leo

Libra

(23rd Sept-22nd Oct) Your presence around others is being noticed for all the right reasons. Although you may not be aware of this yourself, people appreciate your honesty and kindness.

Scorpio

(23rd Oct-21st Nov) Your natural instincts can guide you through the darkest of times. Trust them and remain confident when things are not going your way.

Sagittarius

(21st March-19th April) Taking time out to consider what is best for you in the workplace is not something to be ashamed off. Prioritise your happiness, and move on if necessary.

(23rd July-22nd Aug) You’re financially stable, however, being the ambitious person you are, you are not content. He who dares wins, take a risk and see where it takes you!

(22nd Nov-21st Dec) Believing in yourself is a basic building block of confidence, perhaps not your strong point. You have come a long way and have a lot to show for it. Be sure to let it show.

Taurus

Virgo

Capricorn

(20th April-20th May) The forthcoming week holds good things in store. Despite perhaps getting off to a slow start, expect the very best from the near future.

(23rd Aug-22nd Sept) You may begin to feel like you are being weighed down by unnecessary pressures. Embrace the new and throw out the old, ensuring your wellbeing is prioritised.

(22nd Dec-19th Jan) You’re packed with adventure, however, something continues to hold you back. Let it go; what better time than the present to live in the moment.
