INTRODUCTION Welcome to Tadcaster Echo, formerly known as Locate magazine. This month we have a new look, a new name and new distribution areas! We’re constantly looking for ways to improve our magazine, and we felt strongly that the areas Locate covered could be improved in order to generate maximum response for our advertisers and the most relevant editorial for our readers. Many of our customers and readers wanted the magazine to be distributed to Boston Spa, Wetherby and Sherburn-in-Elmet, and we felt it was necessary that we began to hit those key areas as well as Tadcaster. And with new target areas comes a new name! Tadcaster Echo will be distributed to over

20,000 homes and businesses hitting all of the new key areas plus many more. We are confident these changes will benefit both our advertisers and readers and we hope you see them as a positive thing too! There are some great businesses, events and people in Tadcaster Echo’s distribution areas and we hope each issue will give them the platform for publicity that they deserve. So why don’t you put on some comfy clothes, pour yourself a cup of tea and get stuck in to the first ever Tadcaster Echo! It’s full to the brim of exciting businesses and editorial so that you can keep tabs on what is happening in your community. Until next time!

Triumph of the Tour! Tadcaster does the county proud with a fantastic Tour de Yorkshire turnout Thousands of people lined the streets to welcome this year’s Tour de Yorkshire to Tadcaster. Not only did people attending have a fantastic time, but the town was really put on the map, with the race being televised in countries around the world as well as on national TV in the UK. Initial estimates suggest that over two-million people lined the race route over the three days, bringing plenty of new customers to local businesses in the process. The District Council funded the town’s involvement in the race as part of its long-term efforts to support Tadcaster following the 2015 floods. The District Council’s Director of Economic Regeneration and Place, Dave Caulfield, told us: ‘Tadcaster really embraced the opportunities that the Tour brought to the town – and I’d like to thank local businesses and people living in the town for their support. You gave the race a great Yorkshire welcome’. The race was also heavily supported by North Yorkshire County Council which runs highways services in the area. We hope to see you all at the Tour again next time! If you’d like to see a short film about Tadcaster’s time in the Tour you can find it at www.selby.gov.uk

tadcaster Bridge Improve North Yorkshire County Council has been completing works on the river bed and on the banks of the Wharfe following the rebuilding of Tadcaster Bridge Since the bridge reopened in February, the County Council’s contractors have been back on site tidying up the bridge stone work, removing temporary structures such as the supports and footbridge.

Contractors have also removed their site cabins and resurfaced the Selby District Council car park on the east side of the river, which was used to store plant for the rebuilding works. Some improvement works have also been made to the bus station.

The County Council has been back in the river, cutting down the metal sheet piles of the cofferdam, which was erected to create a dry dock to enable contractors to strengthen the bridge’s foundations. This has helped to restore the riverbanks and the river bed to its former level, filling in scour holes and removing stones and debris that built up due to the floods that caused the bridge to collapse at Christmas 2015.

The County Council is applying for planning permission for street lighting on the bridge and to create seating and recreational facilities on the Wharfe’s west side with information boards which will tell the bridge’s history. ‘We believe this would be a fitting legacy to Tadcaster and the resilience of its community during this difficult year,’ said David Bowe, the County Council’s Corporate Director for Business and Environmental Services.

SCOUTS HIKE THE Wetherby district scout groups recently took part in the annual Andrew Oliver Incident Hike, a tradition of decades that perfectly reflects the Wetherby district’s community spirit Andrew Oliver was a dedicated scout, having been involved from a very young age right up until his 20s. Sadly, he was diagnosed with leukaemia and, after various treatments, eventually lost the battle. To honour their faithful scout, it was decided that his memory would be kept alive by creating a competition for all scouts groups in the area - and the Andrew Oliver Incident Hike was born. As Cath Jackson from 1st Tadcaster scout group told the Tadcaster Echo: ‘Little did they know, this event would still be continuing almost 30 years later.’ The Andrew Oliver Incident Hike is open to all scouts in the Wetherby

10

district area aged 10 to 14 and offers a great opportunity for the boys and girls to practice their scouting skills whilst learning

even more in the process - all whilst making new friends and having fun in the process. Each year, a circular route of between

10 to 12 miles is devised by the scout leaders, with challenges, or ‘incidents’, set up across the route. Cath told the Tadcaster Echo: ‘These challenges are to encourage teamwork, using their physical skills learnt in scouting, but mainly problem solving - both physical and mental.’ The scouts are split into teams consisting of three to five youngsters, with a maximum of four to complete each challenge. The incidents the scouts can face are vast and varied, and are designed to test a whole host of skills, from orienteering to radio operations, as well as some physical tasks too. The routes each year cover the rural areas of Yorkshire, and in the past, the hike has been held in areas such

Issue 31 - June / July 2017

EIR WAY TO GLORY as Bolton Abbey, the North York Moors and the white horse. Cath continued to tell the Tadcaster Echo: ‘In the last two years we have looked to build in links to smaller towns and last year the hike incorporated Wetherby’. This year, the Andrew Oliver Incident Hike took the scouts through Aberford - giving all the youngsters a great chance to explore and learn about the surrounding areas and get to grips with nature. Speaking to Pete Allanach from Wetherby District Scouts group, he informed us that this year was the first year that the older scouts, aged 14 to 16, planned the whole hike themselves - including the challenges. He told the Tadcaster Echo: ‘This is a new idea and sets the older scouts up as role models’, as well as also giving them great managing and planning skills. Of course, every challenge needs a bit of competitive spirit injected into it, and the Andrew Oliver Incident Hike is no different. Teams can score points based on how well they perform in each incident. These points are then totalled and

combined with the time it takes to complete the hike, meaning the scouts must carefully manage their time on the hike as they complete each challenge. In the spirit of fairness, another award is given to the group with the highest score using a handicap system based on age.

in the hut and Tadcaster will carry the Wetherby district flag on their various parades throughout the coming year’. It has to be said that this is the perfect way to commemorate Andrew Oliver, who spent the best part of his life involved in our area’s scouting activities, and he would surely be proud that his name is still being honoured, decades since his passing. Tadcaster alone has around 200 children signed up to scouting between the ages of six and 18 that meet throughout the week. Scouting is an invaluable way to learn key life skills and promote a strong community spirit.

This year, Tadcaster’s scout group put in their all and achieved glory, winning both the overall challenge and also the handicap award - what an achievement! Delighted at her scout group’s success, Cath Jackson told us: ‘They take home two trophies which are on display

They’re always looking for new leaders to come on board and help out, so if you think you’d like to join the world of scouting and make a real difference to children’s lives, get in touch with Scout groups near you on their Facebook pages: Wetherby District Scouts: @wetherbydistrictscouts or 1st Tadcaster Scout Group: @1stTadcasterScoutGroup

Don’t be a Waster

Reduce, Reuse, Respect campaign gathers community support throughout Tadcaster

Selby District Council’s Don’t be a Waster – Reduce, Reuse, Respect campaign is continuing to gather support from across the district, including in the Tadcaster area. Each month the campaign looks at a different issue. In January, the focus was on litter and the Council also took part in the #1PieceofRubbish campaign on social media which was supported by groups such as Tadcaster Albion FC, the Yorkshire Rows, local businesses and residents alike. Between them, they helped to raise awareness of the issue of litter and took positive steps towards keeping our streets clean. The focus on fly tipping in March saw the introduction of ‘Evidence Seized’ and ‘Council Aware’ stickers for use on illegally dumped

waste. These help to cut down on the repeat reporting of fly-tipping and with appeals for witnesses when additional evidence is needed. The Council has also been working with a local arts charity on an innovative project to produce ‘clay faces’ for waste-dumping hotspots – studies have shown these may help deter such incidents. To further highlight the amount of valuable time wasted on fly-tipping, the Council also live tweeted the occasions in which staff were called out to deal with these incidents. A ‘Hall of Shame’ page on the Council website, highlighting those individuals have been prosecuted for dumping waste illegally has also gone live. 10 YEARS ON AND STILL CONSISTENTLY GOOD Since starting the business 10 years ago in 2007, Business Manager, Helen Smith, and Operations Manager, Nicole Newiss, have undergone four Ofsted inspections. The latest one took place in February of this year and again the team was awarded a GOOD in all areas. Helen Smith said “This grading from Ofsted was such positive news. During the last ten years of business we have seen our nursery grow from one building to two buildings with age-specific rooms. We used to have a registration for just 18 children and now we have over 120 children and 90 families from all surrounding areas that use us throughout the week. Even with all these

improvements and the changes in the way Ofsted carry out their inspections, we have still maintained a consistent ‘GOOD’ rating in 2008, 2011, 2013 and now 2017”. The team of 16 staff has worked very hard to create a nurturing and inspiring quality nursery which provides a lovely homely feel, whilst still challenging children through taught activities. This year many of our Year Six children who started with us as babies in our Crawlers Room will be heading off to high school to start their next adventure and it is wonderful to know that we have enthused their learning for the future.

We will be holding an Open Day in October to celebrate our 10 years and now can combine this with our proud achievement in attaining another Ofsted GOOD rating

HELPING YOU TO HAVE Y Elections team hard at work in a busy political period It’s been a busy time for Selby District Council’s elections team. The District Council runs votes that cover people living in the Tadcaster area, even when they’re for other organisations. This year there are two major polls: firstly the elections for North Yorkshire County Council that took place in May - quickly followed by the General Election on Thursday, June 8. Hundreds of people from across the local area support elections in lots of different ways. Some people work in polling stations, which have to be open from 7am to 10pm - that’s a long shift! Others are involved in counting votes, which for the General Election, takes place overnight. Thousands of votes are cast and each one has to be counted by hand. For the national poll, Selby District Council will run the polling stations and counting of votes for the Selby and Ainsty constituency.

The District Council’s head of legal services, Gill Marshall, explained, ‘Running an election is quite a complex thing to do to make sure that everyone has an opportunity to vote in a fair and transparent way. It involves Council staff from across the organisation, working alongside other people from the community, to create a team who can deliver polling stations and counting votes, and all the work that goes around making sure this is delivered successfully.’ The District Council also administers the local electoral roll, and you can register at any time to make sure your details are up-to-date. Check out more online at www.selby.gov.uk, or you can find out more via www.aboutmyvote.co.uk. There is always up-to-date information on the latest elections taking place on the District Council’s website.

Macmillan’s ‘Hopes & Dreams’ Ball 2017 Back for its second year running, the Hopes & Dreams ball held at York racecourse is once again setting out to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support. Event organiser, Matt Ascough, has personal experience of dealing with cancer and told us: ‘I was diagnosed with testicular cancer on my mums 60th birthday, four years ago, aged 26. I was going because I found a lump and what I thought was a routine check-up for a possible cyst’. It was then that Matt was diagnosed with cancer. ‘The first person I came across when the news had been broken to me was a Macmillan Nurse. She was sat in the room with the doctor, the nurse made me a cup of tea and the news was broken. At that point the doctor left, leaving me with the nurse who comforted me and explained the next stages. She also helped me come to terms with how to tell my mother. That was the hardest part.’ Matt’s story will be familiar to many, and the immediate care by the Macmillan Nurse highlights just how important this charity can prove to be for cancer sufferers and their families. Matt chose the name Hopes and Dreams for one specific reason: we all hope and dream for a cure. Sticking

22

with the theme of hope, there will be a Wishing Tree Raffle also running on the night. For this, each guest will be given a card to write a message of hope, luck or remembrance on and will then hang their card on the Wishing Tree. This will be the centre piece of the room with all the raffle prizes surrounding it. Matt told us: ‘Last year was my first and was much harder, we had 160 people and we raised just short of £4500. However, this year’s ball is so much better and we have 320 guests and that number is still rising. I aim to raise a minimum of £6,000, although I would love to raise over £8,000.’ Live entertainment includes music by Val Hill, The Monotones, and the York University Student Group, Zamar. A Fun Night casino will also be running, and the Magic Ball Man will welcome guests as they walk down Macmillan’s green carpet. The event will run from 10 June at 18:30pm until 1:30am. Tickets are £39.00 per person and tables can sit up to 12 guests, 14 if needs be. Tickets are expected to sell out fast so anybody interested is asked to contact Matt on 01347 889419 and 07733833710, or email him at Matt.ascough@yorkracecoursehospitality.co.uk. Alternatively you may book your tickets online through Eventbrite but booking fees may apply.

WHERE TO WALK THIS SU Summer is finally here, so what better way to enjoy the sun than by getting those walking boots on and taking in the fresh Yorkshire air? Tadcaster and the surrounding area is rich with quiet countryside and history from country houses to old battlefields, there’s plenty to find and discover when out and about. That’s why we thought we’d let you in on our favourite walking routes in the area, so you can get out there and explore for yourself! Our favourite has got to be the Tadcaster River Walk - at one and a half miles, it won’t be the biggest hike of your life, but it’s the perfect Sunday stroll that’ll give you a taste for more! Starting at the car park and bus station, head over the Tadcaster Bridge and take in the view upstream towards the viaduct. From there, turn right and head north, passing by Wharfe Bank Terrace. This road will take you past St Mary’s Church, then lead you to the riverside path through the trees. Standing here, on your left you’ll

see Castle Hill with the remains of the old Norman castle that dates from the early 13th century. Continue on to the viaduct and cross here, before heading back in the direction of the car park. On you way back, you’ll be treated to many a sight, from Mill House to the buttercup meadow on your left. In early summer, buttercup meadow is in full bloom and provides another great photo opportunity! If you’re looking to get a few extra miles under your belt, why not try the roman road walk to Newton Kyme? This walk is about seven miles and should take just over an hour at a steady pace and with just a few gentle hills it shouldn’t be too strenuous. There’s plenty to see here on the way to the historic village of Newton Kyme, including a roman fort, as well as the remains of Kyme Castle once you get there. This month, Business Support Specialist Heidi Green provides us with her top tips on running a business

Is running a business hard? It might come as a shock to some people that being your own boss is not about late starts, long lunch breaks and early finishes. There may be a “honeymoon” period at the start, but before long, reality kicks in. So, as the old saying goes, have you failed to plan and does that mean you have planned to fail? Three quick questions: Do you have a business plan and is this business plan all in your head? Have you

thought about the financial side such as costs and sales forecasts? Have you set objectives and goals and if so, who is holding you accountable? If you have developed a plan, is it highlighting all the skills and expertise you need to help you achieve your ambitions and are you reviewing it regularly? Are you hitting targets, is your pricing structure right, is your marketing working and are you able to convert enquiries to sales? The plan should be a tool to use to help you adjust your strategies and help you hit your targets. Within your plan you should have personal objectives as well as business objectives. This is what will keep you motivated and inspired!

We’re here to help you and your loved ones live happily at home for as long as you wish Award-winning, family owned and managed, we provide home care throughout York, Selby and surrounding villages for the elderly and vulnerable, helping to ensure their comfort and freedom in the security of their own homes. • Enhanced hourly pay for drivers • Better pay for carer roles Work with a local, award-winning family company and enjoy a rewarding job.

Issue 31 - June / July 2017 Think about the reason you started the business; a better work/life balance, a real passion for what you do, financial gains, all of which without a plan could easily fall from your vision. So, if you have already written a plan is it in the drawer or on a shelf gathering dust? Does it have all the measures in it to help you and your business develop? Is it giving you the results you deserve? Having a successful business is not easy and is hard work but believe me, there is nothing more rewarding that developing your business and taking pride in your own achievements. Engage with a business mentor who will offer you support and allow you time to step back and see the bigger picture. Invest in yourself and your business, it will stop you becoming stale and “settling” for what you have got. This about our BHAG – your Big Hairy Audacious Goal and let’s get working on it. Business of the

month

We speak to Eyekit about their fantastic range of eyewear and find out what it’s like to be an online retailer in North Yorkshire

Eyekit Village Opticians are a family run, online retailer and opticians based in Ulleskelf. They specialise in the provision of sports and leisure eyewear and have recently opened their own opticians Can you tell us a little about the range of products that Eyekit offer? We are a local opticians offering a huge range of branded eyewear. These include glasses and sunglasses for general use, sports protective glasses and goggles, safety eyewear for occupational use, ski goggles and swimming goggles. Most of the eyewear we offer can be available with either a prescription or as standard. We also offer a wide range of services from a general eye test to more specialist services such as occupational tests for VDU screening and for pilot vision, colour vision testing for visual dyslexia, and more. What makes Eyekit stand out from other lens and frame providers? It’s mainly our specialism and personalised high quality service. We specialise in the provision of sports and leisure eyewear so have a wide range of these types of frames to choose from compared to most other opticians. We are also able to

30

provide complex prescriptions for highly curved frames associated with sports eyewear and offer a wide variety of lenses to meet specific needs for general, sport or occupational use. What’s the product you’re most proud of? In general, it’s our range of safety eyewear for both sports safety and industrial safety - we have one of the largest collections in the UK and it’s great to give customers options where they usually have very few. Do you have any interesting facts about Eyekit? We supply specialist prescription eyewear for customers all around the world who have particular needs and issues. We have supplied frames to Olympians, mountaineers climbing Everest, international Yachtsmen and runners undertaking Des Sables across the Sahara desert. One day we can be sending eyewear out to our troops training in Afghanistan, the next sending frames to TV shows in

production. What does the future hold for your business? We started out as an online retailer of sports and leisure eyewear and have just opened up our opticians. So we would like to develop and build this side of the business providing ophthalmic services for local people. What do you love most about being based in North Yorkshire? We are from Yorkshire, ‘born and bred’, so have a natural bias. We love the people and besides being a great place for cycling, it is a great environment to work in. Lastly, what are the main benefits you find to advertising in our magazines? It is a local magazine that provides articles of local interest. It’s a great way to catch up on what’s going on in our community, both socially and for the services and products that can be bought locally.

SWIM FOR THE SUMMER!

With the long and (hopefully) hot summer months ahead of us, there’s no better way to cool off than a dip in the pool, and perhaps earn a qualification in the process! If cooling off isn’t enough for you, there are a ton of other benefits to be had from taking a visit to your local pool. Swimming is a great way to manage your weight - an average of 367 calories can be burned from a thirty-minute dip. It can be fantastic for your mental health too. According to a survey of 4,000 swimmers conducted by Speedo, 74 per cent agreed that a swim relieves their stress and tension and 70% also agreed that they feel mentally refreshed after a session in the water. With swimmers flocking to Tadcaster Community Swimming Pool over the summer months, they’re looking for some extra support and calling for new volunteer lifeguards. In return for a minimum of 50 hours volunteering, they’re offering a National Pool Lifeguard Qualification for free! Speaking to the Tadcaster Echo, Kathryn Gallagher, Assistant Manager at Tadcaster Swimming Pool said: ‘The NPLQ qualification is nationally recognised and lifeguards can go on and work at any other pool in the UK.’ Presently, the pool has 20 lifeguards, but that number has risen to 50 in the past, so there are plenty of places up for grabs. The only requirements are that

you’re over 16 years old and able to swim 50 metres in one minute, as well as swimming eight lengths. So, if you love swimming and are looking for a great opportunity to start a new career, or just want to help out, this is most definitely for you. Kathryn went on to tell the Tadcaster Echo: ‘Working alongside the staff, Tadcaster Pool is supported by a considerable network of volunteers who provide a valuable service to the community. The commitment of the volunteers is remarkable and very much appreciated.’ With all of this in mind, we recommend a trip to Tadcaster Community Swimming Pool over the next couple of months! There’s always plenty going on in the waters here, wether you’re a volunteer lifeguard or simply fancy a dip. For more information and a full list of everything going on at the pool, visit their site at: www.tadcasterpool.org.uk/ or call: 01937 833001 If you’re wanting to become a volunteer lifeguard, contact Kathryn directly via email on: kgallagher@tadcasterpool.org.uk
