Tadcaster Albion receives funding to save club after floods Tadcaster Albion has been awarded a grant from the Premier League, The FA and Government’s Football Foundation, to undertake essential repairs to the clubhouse and stadium following the devastation from the floods This grant will enable the club, which plays at Step 4 in the Non-League Pyramid in the Northern Premier League, North West Division, the opportunity to repair the substantial damage to its clubhouse and changing facilities sustained following storms Ciara and Dennis.

submerged several times under the flood water, provide new fencing to those areas which bore the brunt of the force of the flooding, essential repairs to the pitch and also the purchase of a new lawn mower to replace the one that was ruined.

This will include the replacement of the floor and wall finishes, key electrical items, roof repairs and redecoration.

This will enable Tadcaster Albion to resume its place in the league as and when the measures to protect people from the Covid-19 virus can be relaxed sufficiently for the new season to begin.

It will also make it possible for the club to repair the electrical wiring to the floodlights, which was

towards the project. Andy Charlesworth, Tadcaster Albion’s Chairman, said: “Football is vitally important to the local community here as well as the players and volunteers who help run the Club. We have been in existence since 1892 and at the current stadium for 60 years. To receive this funding from the Premier League, The FA and the Government through the Football Foundation, means a lot to us, as it will help us continue to represent the town and get even more people involved in the nation’s favourite game.” Jo de Tute, Head of Football Development at West Riding County FA commented: “As a County FA it is great to see that the FA and the Football Foundation acted so quickly to offer support to those clubs unfortunately affected by the floods. With the funding now in place for

Tadcaster, work can now get started on getting the clubhouse, stadium and other areas of the ground back up to fully working order. Well done everyone and we look forward to seeing it when it is all finished.” Paul Thorogood, Chief Executive of the Football Foundation, said: “We’re dedicated to improving grassroots football facilities because we want to encourage more people to get involved in our nation’s favourite game, regardless of their background, age or ability. That’s why I’m delighted that this funding will support Tadcaster Albion to continue and thrive after the devastating floods earlier this year.” For more information on the club’s progress, please visit tadalbion.com

The lady making sure everyone gets their sweet fix during lockdown Mrs Sweet’s Chocolate & Treats has been travelling around Tadcaster delivering all things sweet to hundreds of houses during lockdown Tadcaster Echo decided to catch up with the owner, known only as Mrs Sweet’s to find out more about how the idea came about. Mrs Sweet’s told Tadcaster Echo: “After spending days upon days on the sofa during lockdown; after watching Sky News from the moment we woke until very late in the evening; after watching box set after box set; after clearing every cupboard

Page 16

there was to clear, including gathering 20 bags of shoes and clothes to take to the homeless charities; with the daily news conferences getting scarier and thousands of deaths sweeping the nation, it seemed that we were now preparing to be in lockdown for the foreseeable. “Feeling petrified and nervous about this huge pandemic across the world, our family business First 4 Vending was

on pause - a business which relies heavily on the leisure industry, factories, offices, cafes and bars. My husband and I were going through the same emotions as everyone else I guess: have breakfast, go on a walk, eat lunch, sit in the

Issue 48 - June/July 2020

garden. Thankfully, we have been blessed with some glorious weather, which helps! We had a feeling of being on holiday but missed dressing up for dinner and a taking a leisurely swim in the pool to cool down. It was reaching lunchtime before my children came down for breakfast! Something had to change as boredom had set in big time. So one evening I said to my husband: ‘I can’t do this any longer, I can make and sell treat boxes’ “So I sat down and devised a business plan and here we are and we are absolutely loving it. What a joy and pleasure it is seeing children dancing at the door when Mrs Sweet’s arrives!” How it works is you place

an order with Mrs Sweet’s Chocolate & Treats either through social media, calling the mobile number provided or on their website. You then place an envelope sellotaped to your front doors with cash in exchange for a box full of juicy jellies, creamy fudge and small chocolate treats. Mrs Sweet’s added: “The children were elated! One door I knocked on I could see the shadows of the children jumping for joy as the parents closed the front door. “It brought a tear to my eyes. The faces of delight when I deliver an unexpected gift is absolutely priceless. I will continue to bring a little happiness at a time when we are all feeling sadness and utter despair for families all over the world. I am also

offering helium balloons for the treat boxes starting from £5! Everyone deserves to celebrate a birthday, anniversary, new baby etc and Mrs Sweet’s can help you do that!” Mrs Sweet’s has lots of new ideas for the very near future, keep your eyes on both their website, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat or Facebook page. Stay safe and eat sweets. Mrs Sweet’s Chocolate & Treats are currently delivering in Tadcaster, York, Wetherby, Harrogate, Leeds and the East Coast on specific delivery dates. Aquarius

(20th Jan-18th Feb) Being assertive is what has helped you make progress in the past. Sometimes you have to give other people a chance to lead the way.

Pisces

(19th Feb-20th March) Someone at home is very touchy. You’re trying to make their wishes a priority but you have yourself to think of too, so it isn’t easy.

Aries

Gemini

(21st May-20th June) A friend or family member wants you to listen to them. Take this chance to learn the fine art of compromise - but remember, it works both ways.

Cancer

Leo

Libra

Page 22
