Jigsaws Childcare keeps the Stay and Play service running The nursery, based in Church Fenton, aims to nurture, inspire, challenge and enthuse your child as they take their first steps in the world With a number of rooms specifically designed to give your child the care and attention they need,

the nursery’s vision is to create a place that is secure and values caring, respectful relationships.

We had a chat with the business manager, Helen Smith, to find out what has been happening at the nursery and update you on the latest news. Helen told Tadcaster Echo: “Over the last seven years we have worked really closely with the local Children’s Centres in Tadcaster, Sherburn and Selby. Jigsaws supported Stay and Play groups, with Children’s Centre staff: groups where mums, dads, grandparents, childminders and carers

could bring pre-school children for fun, new play ideas, song time and a healthy snack. “Unfortunately in July the Children’s Centre had to review their local priorities and staff took on other roles. However, at Jigsaws we wanted to keep offering the Stay and Play service to the Tadcaster community, as it seemed such an essential way for children to meet other friends and families and get the support they may need. “With the help of a few

‘Healthy Eating’ and ‘Healthy lifestyle’ our all-round approach At Jigsaws we believe the individual needs of children and families is so important and catering for this is our biggest focus. Rated as ‘Good’ by Ofsted since 2007 we are always building on our amazing teaching and caring skills to give everyone the best start in life. On site we now cater for vegan and vegetarians, with our home cooked meals and specific menu. Our weekly meals have a healthy starter and main meal rather than just a focus on pudding. We support children with a variety of food allergies and have staff trained in the management of anaphylaxis and use of auto-injectors. Combining great food with an extensive outdoor learning programme led by our Forest School trained staff helps to build up children’s resilience, co-ordination and physical development. GOVERNMENT ANNO FOR FLOOD DEFENC

The Government has said it will pledge £9mi

The money will go towards the Tadcaster Flood Alleviation Scheme which earlier this year also received £1.02 million by the Local Enterprise Partnership. This is all part of the Government’s plan to fund £62.35million of additional funding for flood defence schemes in England. Nigel Adams, MP for Selby and Ainsty commented: “This £9million announcement is fantastic news for Tadcaster and I want to thank the outgoing floods minister Therese Coffey MP for listening to the case we put

Page 14

forward - to not only fund the preparatory designs, but fund the new flood scheme for the town. “The announcement comes after months of meetings and discussions with DEFRA and the Environment Agency. I am also very grateful for the input of the Tadcaster Flood Action Group, North Yorkshire County Council and the LEP. “The amount of Government funding for a Tadcaster flood scheme including design work is now £10.02 million and following the

terrible floods of 2015. Tadcaster can at last look forward to enhanced flood protection.” We are all too aware of the devastating flooding that took place in the town that year which caused Tadcaster’s historic bridge to collapse and serious damage to 79 homes and businesses. However, just over a year after the flood and at a cost of £4.4million, the bridge was restored and reopened in February 2017. Hopefully, this funding will ensure nothing like what we saw in 2015 can happen again and our houses, businesses and the newly restored bridge are protected and remain safe. Cllr

Mark Crane, Leader of Selby District Council, said: “I’d like to welcome the announcement of significant funding to protect homes and businesses in Tadcaster. This decision demonstrates the importance of Selby working jointly with partner organisations to secure major funding for our district. “Tadcaster has inspired many as they have shown how a community can bounce back from the devastating flooding they suffered in 2015.” The flood defence construction is due to start by summer 2021.

This month, Business Support Specialist Heidi Green tells us how important market research can be in helping your business succeed

Market research Most people think market research is done when you start your business and are considering the supply and demand of your product or service. You gather data on customers and potential customers to help you make business decisions. Market Research can help shape where you may develop new products or ideas and is often gained from customer feedback. You may not like the results but act on them. After all, one of the results of market research can be identifying why some

Page 20

clients have left you. This gives you a great opportunity to try to win them back or at least stop you losing more. Research via focus groups discussing how and why they’d use your products or services really gives a great insight about your customers and this in turn could shape your entire strategy or the need for additional research. For help and advice on the above or business growth and funding opportunities contact Heidi Green, Senior Business Advisor for Selby District Council via email at hgreen@ selby.gov.uk or call 01757 292332.

This month’s Jobcentre column brings you some important links and information for those who may be considering making the first few steps towards setting up a business.

Setting up a business The following are some basic things to consider when setting up your own business. For further information please visit Gov.uk - www.gov.uk/ browse/business/settingup

You share responsibility for your business’s debts. You also have accounting responsibilities. Find out more about being in a partnership and how to register here: www.gov.uk/set-up-businesspartnership

Register your business Most businesses register as a sole trader, limited company or partnership.

Rules for your type of business You may have other responsibilities depending on what your business does.

Sole traders It’s simpler to set up as a sole trader, but you’re personally responsible for your business’s debts. You also have some accounting responsibilities www.gov.uk/set-up-sole-trader Limited companies If you form a limited company, its finances are separate from your personal finances, but there are more reporting and management responsibilities - www.gov.uk/running-alimited-company Partnerships A partnership is the simplest way for two or more people to run a business together.

Check if you need: • Licences or permits, for example to play music, sell food or to trade in the street • Insurance There are also rules you must follow if you: • Sell goods online • Buy goods from abroad or sell goods abroad • Store or use personal information Where you work Check what your responsibilities are if you:

• Run your business from home • Rent somewhere to run your business from If you rent or buy a property, you may have to pay business rates. Small businesses can apply for a discount on business rates and some may pay nothing. Check if you can claim office, property and equipment as expenses - www.gov. uk/expenses-if-youre-selfemployed Taking on people to help If you take on agency workers or freelancers you have some responsibilities, for example their health and safety. There are things you’ll need to do if you take on your own employees - www.gov.uk/ employing-staff. You’ll have more responsibilities. A catch-up with Tadcaster Albion After a disappointing last season, the club was left to mull over what this meant for the team’s future squad he assembled - some old, some new, some from the Taddy Under 21 team - soon started to show the grit and determination that had always driven their gaffer. So, from Tadcaster’s first five league matches this season they have taken 10 points out of a possible 15 – that is the type of return the manger will be looking for if the team is to mount an assault on the promotion race.

To make matters worse, all but six of the previous squad left to join other clubs and the manager, Simon Collins, also decided that the job was not for him. So, when current manager, Curtis Woodhouse, was offered the job back in June he had essentially a team of six and the first of nine pre-season warm-

up matches in three weeks’ hence. Curtis is fortunately well connected at this level of football, both with contacts from his professional playing days with the likes of Sheffield United, Birmingham City and Hull City, plus his previous managerial positions at Hull United and Bridlington Town. It was no small task, but the

There is always room for more supporters and if any readers would like to see what the club is all about they are more than welcome at any home or away game. SHAPING OUR FUTURE

The Tadcaster & Villages Community Engagement Forum is hosting an interactive workshop to explore priorities and actions for the CEF to focus on over the coming years

The Tadcaster and Villages Community Engagement Forum is a collaboration between the District Council, County Council, Town Council, Parish Councils, Police, Fire and Rescue Service, local businesses and community groups along with individual residents. The event will take place on Monday 18th November 2019 at 6.30pm at the Riley Smith Hall, 28 Westgate, Tadcaster, LS24 9AB. The theme of the meeting will be a refresh of the CEF’s CDP (Community Development Plan). Here there will be refreshments as well as a chance to speak to your Councillors, staff from Selby District Council, North Yorkshire Highways, North Yorkshire Police to name a few.

This is the perfect opportunity for you to have your say about the issues that are important to you and the place where you live. Prior to the workshop, Cllr Richard Sweeting Chair of Tadcaster and Villages CEF Partnership Board, is kindly asking those who wish to attend the workshop to fill out an online survey to ensure the committee can focus on the issues the people of the community want to be answered.
