INTRODUCTION Welcome to the October/November edition of the Tadcaster Echo. We hope you’re enjoying a beautiful North Yorkshire autumn as you’re reading this issue.

As the saying goes, ‘not all heroes wear capes’, and that’s certainly true in the case of the Wetherby District Lions Club, who have been fundraising for important causes for over 50 years. We spoke to club president John Boulton about the Lions’ inspiring work in the community, while Tony Morgan, another keen fundraiser, is also featured within our pages this month. Tony is the Tadcaster-based author of the alternative history novels Remember,

Remember The 6th Of November and its soonto-be-released sequel, 1617. Focused on sharing his fictional interpretation of Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder Plot, we caught up with Tony ahead of 1617’s release, as he intends to kindly donate all proceeds from the book’s sales to the York Teaching Hospital Charity. We also bring you news of an exciting development in Church Fenton, as Screen Yorkshire’s purchase of the village’s airfield ensures the space will continue to be used for high-profile television and film productions. It’s crazy to think that our next issue will cover Christmas and January 2018, but for now, sit back, relax, and enjoy your new issue of the Tad Echo!

LIONHEARTS OF GOLD Wetherby’s ordinary people making an extraordinary difference You’ll find selfless, kindhearted people at the core of any good community, and representing the world’s largest charity Lions Clubs International - the Wetherby District Lions are key to so many of the inspiring things happening in Wetherby and the town’s surrounding areas. Now in its 52nd year, the Wetherby District Lions Club has raised in excess of £1 million, and last year alone supported local organisations such as Yorkshire Air Ambulance and St Gemma’s Hospice with £20,000 in donations. Members of the club come from all walks of life, and the tireless fundraising of these individuals allows them to carry out voluntary work both locally and internationally, where help is sorely needed. We spoke to WDLC president John Boulton about the Lions’ role in the community, and their upcoming ‘Townsperson of the Year’ award - recognising one person’s outstanding contribution to the Wetherby community. ‘Among the many awards that we do is the prestigious ‘Townsperson of the Year’ award. This award recognises an adult who has made a difference to his or her community for no

6

recognition or financial reward. It could be a Scout leader, teacher, carer, sports coach, or even a neighbour. The list is endless, and we are currently seeking nominations for this year’s winner.’ And clearly not content with just helping the Wetherby community, the club will soon be branching into the Tadcaster area for further charity work, with the first event confirmed for Saturday 18th November at Tadcaster Social Club - The British Legion’s local branch will benefit from all the proceeds of a fundraising quiz. ‘We are actively seeking new members, so if you’re over 18, have a little spare time, and want to make a positive difference to your community, we would love to hear from you. The future for WDLC looks very exciting, and we welcome you all to be a part of it!’ To find out more about joining the Wetherby District Lions Club, please call John on 0845 833 9529, or visit www.wetherbylions.org. FLOOD FIGHTERS The Tadcaster volunteer group fending off future floods Almost two years on since the infamous Storm Frank breached Tadcaster’s flood defences, the volunteers of the Tadcaster Flood Action Group have been working hard ever since to ensure the town has all the necessary infrastructure in place to prevent a recurrence of 2015’s torrential flood damage. It was the collapse of the Tadcaster bridge that prompted local businesses such as the Heineken Brewery and the Masons Arms pub to donate generously to the TFAG, and empower them with the resources to be able to better defend our community from flooding in the future. The funding allowed for the purchase of two towable Hilta C100 Flood Pumps that are able

to be quickly deployed and move 60,000 gallons of water per hour in the event of imminent risk. Along with the pumps, the group has a 24/7 camera on the Wharfe in Tadcaster, for monitoring the river’s surface level at all times. While the group is not intended to replace the response that would normally be provided by the local emergency services, we can all feel safer in the knowledge that the Tadcaster Flood Action Group are working hard to defend the town from a repeat of December 2015. The Tadcaster Flood Action Group is holding a community safety fair at The Riley-Smith Hall on 15th October. For more information on the group, visit www.tadcasterflood.org

FUNDRAISING THROUGH FICTION Local historical fiction author raises funds for York Teaching Hospital with Gunpowder Plot novels Do you remember Remember, Remember The 6th Of November? It was Tadcasterbased author Tony Morgan’s debut novel, and one that we featured within our pages last year. Based on Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder Plot, Tony’s thrilling, alternative history tale raised hundreds of pounds for Save The Children and Tadcaster Flood Support And Fundraising. And clearly not an author content with resting on his laurels, Tony has also written a direct sequel in the form of 1617 - a novel set 12 years later that includes ‘heroes, villains, secrets and treachery’ woven into historical fact - which has just been released as an e-book. Profits from both books in 2017 will benefit the York Teaching Hospital Charity, but more specifically, dementia and chemotherapy patients in need of additional support. Speaking to the Tadcaster Echo, Tony explained the inspiration behind Remember, Remember The 6th Of November and its sequel 1617, and

why he holds this particular charity in such high regard. ‘I wanted to give something back to the local hospital that has helped my family so much over the years. In terms of the novels, the more I discovered about Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder Plot, the more fascinated I became as there are so many parallels with today. I wanted to explore why these men wished to blow up Parliament and offer my take through fiction.’ Supporting a local author while raising muchneeded funds for the York Teaching Hospital, we think this a great cause. And with Bonfire Night coming up, either or both of Tony’s books would make a great gift! Remember, Remember The 6th Of November is available as a paperback and an e-book on Amazon, and 1617 is available as an e-book also on Amazon, with a paperback edition to follow in 2018. Contact Tony directly for more information at tonymorganuk@outlook.com

LAMBERT ENGINEERING’S PURSUIT OF EXCELLENCE The Tadcaster engineering company striving for value through innovation

Combining the pursuit of excellence with a strong commitment to its workforce and community, the award-winning Lambert Engineering is a shining example of the great entrepreneurial spirit within the Selby district. The Tadcaster-based company, which was founded in 1973 to make machine parts for the local paper and printing industry, has proved that the region is a great place to start and grow a business. After a humble beginning, Lambert now employs 180 staff, with a turnover of £23 million, a 115% growth over the past six years. The company has a global network of suppliers,

technology partners and high-profile clients such as Nestlé and Procter & Gamble, and is a world leader in bespoke, innovative factory automation projects for the FMCG (fast-moving consumer goods) and medical sectors. Speaking about Lambert’s passionate ethos, managing director, Warren Lambert, said: ‘Engineering isn’t just our business, we’re passionate about it. We want to make sure that young people in the Selby area recognise the opportunities that a career in this sector offers, and understand the skills that companies like ours are looking to nurture.’

10 YEARS ON AND STILL CONSISTENTLY GOOD Since starting the business 10 years ago in 2007, Business Manager, Helen Smith, and Operations Manager, Nicole Newiss, have undergone four Ofsted inspections. The latest one took place in February of this year and again the team was awarded a GOOD in all areas. Helen Smith said “This grading from Ofsted was such positive news. During the last ten years of business we have seen our nursery grow from one building to two buildings with age-specific rooms. We used to have a registration for just 18 children and now we have over 120 children and 90 families from all surrounding areas that use us throughout the week. Even with all these

improvements and the changes in the way Ofsted carry out their inspections, we have still maintained a consistent ‘GOOD’ rating in 2008, 2011, 2013 and now 2017”. The team of 16 staff has worked very hard to create a nurturing and inspiring quality nursery which provides a lovely homely feel, whilst still challenging children through taught activities. This year many of our Year Six children who started with us as babies in our Crawlers Room will be heading off to high school to start their next adventure and it is wonderful to know that we have enthused their learning for the future.

OPEN DAY - SATURDAY 21ST OCTOBER 11AM-2PM Refreshments, bouncy castle and activities for all ages. Celebrating our 10 years and now can combine this with our proud achievement in attaining another Ofsted GOOD rating If you can’t make our Open Day please feel to call and arrange a visit another day

CHURCH FENTON’S SILVER SCREEN PRODUCTIONS Screen Yorkshire moves closer to becoming the ‘Pinewood of the North’ with a major acquisition At first sight, Church Fenton airfield is unremarkable. The ex-RAF base - originally home to the first RAF Eagle Squadron of American Second World War volunteers - looks like many other wartime airfields whose best days are behind them. But looks are deceptive for if you step inside its imposing main 34,000 sq. ft hangar, you are transported into the magnificent world of film and television. The airfield is now the home of Church Fenton Studios, which is managed and developed by Screen Yorkshire - one of nine regional agencies established by the UK Film Council in 2000 to promote and fund productions in the Yorkshire area. Since the turn of the millennium, Screen Yorkshire has been at the forefront of championing Yorkshire and the Humber’s TV and film industries. Its aim has always been to secure and support the very best projects, companies and individuals, and with the recent acquisition of the Church Fenton airfield, the region is fast-becoming one of the country’s most popular production destinations.

Already home to Victoria’s stunning Buckingham Palace set - ITV’s highly-acclaimed historical drama focusing on the 19th-century queen the airfield will continue to undergo further redevelopment, with the site already totalling around 100,000 sq. ft of internal space and 440 acres of clear land - an unparalleled location for production potential in the UK. Expressing her delight at the development, Sally Joynson, Screen Yorkshire’s chief executive, said: ‘It has been a fascinating journey, from when we first approached the landowner with the idea of locating studios here to where we are now. We want Church Fenton Studios to become the Pinewood of the North, and the part that Selby District Council has played in this journey is pivotal. It’s not every day that planners have to rule on a change of use from an old airfield to film studios, but the council acted swiftly and decisively to support something that benefits the region.’ For more information on Screen Yorkshire’s exciting work, visit www.screenyorkshire.co.uk

IT’S BEHIND YOU! Mirror, mirror on the wall, who’s Taddy’s fairest princess of them all? Right on time for pantomime season, the Tadcaster Theatre Company are currently in rehearsal for their next Taddy-inspired panto with a difference: Snow White and the Several Dwarfs! After the success of the TTC’s Sleeping Beauty and the Broken Bridge last year, Andrew O’Leary’s fresh take on Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs has all the traditional charm and humour of a good old-fashioned family panto, but brings Becky Hawkins into the 21st century as a modern-day Snow White. With several dwarfs in the plot, the script also includes imps, a family of squirrels, trolls, chipmunks, and double agents in true ‘Allo ‘Allo style! Add this to the King and Queen, characters such as Fester, Boyle and Sorry, double act Serious Lee and Honest Lee, combined with a hilarious script, catchy tunes and a sprinkling of magic dust, and TTC has a winning pantomime formula up its sleeve. And no panto would be complete without the Dame,

but don’t expect a conventional one! Enter stage right: Nana Ida Doolittle (Andrew Lloyd). Will Snow White get her Prince? Will good conquer evil? To find out, book your tickets now! Snow White and the Several Dwarfs is on at The Riley-Smith Hall, Tadcaster from Tuesday 21st to Saturday 25th of November. While curtain up Tuesday - Friday is at 7:30pm, this year, the theatre company is endeavouring to better cater for children with 1pm and 5pm shows on the Saturday. Tickets are available online at www.ticketsource.co.uk/ tadcastertheatrecompany, or by telephone on 07484 305436.

This month, Business Support Specialist Heidi Green advises our local business owners on how best to approach the difficult topic of delegation

Does your business run you? It has been said that starting a business is like jumping off a cliff and assembling an aeroplane on the way down. All the decisions - good and bad are down to you, no matter how inexperienced you might be in certain areas. You learn as you go along, and it really is a rollercoaster ride. We often hear business owners say ‘I just want to keep the business small and earn a living’, but if an opportunity that could see your business

grow substantially presents itself, would you reject it or step up and leave your comfort zone? Learning to manage growth means working on the business, as opposed to working in the business. To some, delegation is a dirty word, in that the ‘no one can do it as well/quickly/effectively as me’ syndrome soon takes hold! However, you may just be surprised when you try it. Taking your business to another level can be a difficult choice to make, but once you have, you will certainly experience a renewed sense of enthusiasm. When you start to employ new people, be sure to share your aspirations and objectives with them, because allowing others to feel a part of the business’ success means they will be more eager to support you on the journey.

ENJOY A ROOM THAT’S COOLER IN SUMMER AND WARMER IN WINTER. • A 10 year guarantee by the CPA • Our teams have installed insulated roofs since 2008 • Visit our show homes across Yorkshire

Issue 33 - October/November 2017 You will need to motivate those around you, and encourage them to share the same ethics as you such as excellent standards of quality and service, for instance. Involve them in every aspect of the business’ development, and ensure you reward them as well as you would yourself for your own successes. This will encourage them to continue enriching your business with real value, which is important, as a business’ staff can sometimes be its finest asset. To many business owners, the above does not always come naturally. However, it is vital to occasionally take some time out to review the business - just like you would for health checks or vehicle MOTs. Reviewing your business and taking solid advice on growth is crucial, and gives you the confidence to make excellent results a reality. If you are looking to grow your business, and require a fresh pair of eyes for impartial input, don’t hesitate to get in touch! Heidi Green - Senior Business Advice - Selby District Council and Growth Adviser with LCR LEP - hgreen@selby.gov.uk

Celebration of the arts Forty years on from its humble beginnings, the Wetherby Arts Festival continues to go from strength to strength in 2017 A fitting way to celebrate a 40th anniversary, the Wetherby Arts Festival has packed no less than 30 events into its 10-day programme.

at the festival this year, it’s all the more amazing when you look back at the Wetherby Arts Festival’s incredibly humble beginnings way back in 1977…

There’s literature and the spoken word, comedy inspired by music, politics and intimations of mortality from leading stand-ups Kieran Hodgson, Ayesha Hazarika, Paul Sinha and Mitch Benn, and above all else, a wealth of music from local and regional groups. With welcome returns to the festival by St Aidan’s Swing Band and the Wetherby Silver Band, plus large-scale barbershop chorus from Spirit Of Harmony, folk rock and bluegrass from The Paul Mirfin Band, St James’ Choir blending sacred and secular, an Elvis Dinner Dance marking the 40th anniversary of his passing and performances by Wetherby’s Light Music Singers and Musical Theatre Group. And then there’s our Ceilidh with noted band FiddlersWreck.

The concept for the festival was conceived during the Christmas concerts of 1965, when Roy Rimmer - the vicar’s next-door neighbour - remarked, ‘What a pity this only happens at Christmas. What Wetherby needs is a festival!’ It was almost a decade later in 1976, when Reverend Jonathan Bailey began to make real headway with the project.

So considering the vast artistic riches on offer

28

An eleven-strong committee chaired by the vicar would book 25 events for the November 1977 festival’s first outing. And as we eagerly await the beginning of the festival’s 40th anniversary programme, the Reverend’s proud championing of the Wetherby Arts Festival still rings true today: ‘By the people of Wetherby, and for the people of Wetherby’. Book your tickets now at: www.wetherbyfestival.co.uk/shop

Business of the

month

We speak to Rainbow Elf Entertainments to find out about its fun, vibrant and customisable entertainment service

Catering for any and all parties and occasions, Rainbow Elf Entertainments is a Wetherbybased entertainment service managed by the Rainbow Elf herself, Rebecca! Can you tell us a little about the service that Rainbow Elf Entertainments offers? I offer entertainment for children (and adults!), providing pretty much everything you could want. From face painting to glitter tattoos, and balloon modelling to full parties, I am even able to provide personalised goody bags and decorations. I am happy to attend any event, including birthday parties, house warmings, and bar mitzvahs, and have even entertained at a wake before! What makes Rainbow Elf stand out compared to other similar businesses in the region? There are no set packages and everything can be customised as every event is different! I can even design and produce a whole new party for a customer based on what their children will enjoy

30

the most. I am also flexible in that, if ideas change later on, I can adjust, as we know how quickly children can change their minds. Also, if I have no other bookings on a particular day, and a customer doesn’t know how long they want me for, they can just decide on the day instead. Which is especially useful for outdoor events, where it might be a washout.

The name came from my last job in a workshop department, where we were called the Elves. I loved to organise the paints and glitters by colour. As well as it being easier to find the correct shade quickly, it looked a lot nicer on the shelves, so the Rainbow Elf nickname was inspired by that.

What aspect of the business are you most proud of? My ‘YES’ attitude. I hate saying no, so I always strive to say yes. An example of this was at a party a few months ago. I was the Rainbow Fairy, and the birthday girl decided to turn me into a witch, then a frog, then back into a fairy... Of course, I cackled and had a good hop around the room!

Increasing the number of party choices would mean I can continue to be creative, which is something I have always loved. But my biggest aim for the future is to turn this into a full-time job for myself, all while having fun!

Do you have any interesting facts about Rainbow Elf?

What does the future hold for Rainbow Elf?

Lastly, what are the main benefits you enjoy from advertising in our magazine? I like the area that it covers, especially now that it advertises in my own village!
