INTRODUCTION Hello readers and welcome to your October/November edition of the Tadcaster Echo!
know, we are all for promoting the positive side to the Tadcaster area, which we believe is as prominent as ever!
We can barely believe that the summer months are well and truly over but autumn brings with it lovely crisp mornings and warm woolies, which we are all for! It’s also Halloween this month, which for me signifies the start of winter - dark nights and the run-up to Christmas. How quickly has the year flown by?!
If you’d like a boost for your business in the run up to Christmas, which for many is the busiest time of year, please do get in touch with our friendly team to see how the Tadcaster Echo and our sister publications could help. We have worked with so many businesses this year who have truly felt the benefit of featuring in our publications.
MEET THE STAFF
We’ve packed this issue full of positive news For now, sit back with a cuppa and enjoy stories and events, as always. As you all this issue. We’ll see you again in December!

Sherburn’s Old Girls’ School reopened after five-year campaign After many years of hard work and commitment, the Old Girls’ School on Kirkgate in Sherburn in Elmet had its long-awaited grand opening last month The school, which is one of the last remaining historic buildings in Sherburn, was built back in 1874 and was used as the local primary school until December 1978. Many of the Sherburn residents attended the school, or know people who did, and as such the building has held a place in many local people’s hearts. Due to this popularity and history, a group of local residents teamed up with the Parish Council in an attempt to save the building from being demolished. Luckily, after lots of hard work, help from our local community, fundraising, donations and sponsorship, the school was saved and was transformed into a community centre to be used by all local residents. A lot of hard work has been put into restoring the building, leaving it in the beautiful condition it is today. The building has rooms to rent for

events, groups, business and much more. There is also a tea room named The Little Teapot Cafe, which is open to the public. There will also be a cinema opening shortly too, as well as other community activities. The grand opening was a huge success with people attending in their hundreds to see their newly renovated community centre. The official opening took place in the beautiful gardens and the six main trustees and organisers opened the Old Girls’ School to the public. The committee welcomes everyone to come along and have a look at the new community centre and ask for local support to keep the building up and running. To enquire about using the Old Girls’ School’s facilities, email the centre manager, Sarah Kay, on sarah.kay@siect.uk or call 01977 685178 Tadcaster Echo is brought to you by CreateTVT. Community bereavement support extended Families struggling with the pain of losing a child have somewhere new to turn thanks to Martin House The hospice has extended its community bereavement service so more parents affected by the death of a child or young adult can receive counselling and support. Martin House, which cares for children and young people with life-limiting conditions, has always offered bereavement support to families using its service.
25, apart from stillbirth or miscarriage, who is from West, North and East Yorkshire.
Now that service has been expanded to include all child deaths, so families whose child has died in sudden or unexpected circumstances – such as road traffic accidents, suicide or acute illness – can access support.
“It’s not just about counselling, it’s a lot of proactive work, things like coping strategies, helping with things like returning to work. Parents can also access our bereaved parents’ groups, and brothers and sisters can join our bereavement groups for siblings.”
Diane Whitehead, bereavement counsellor at Martin House, said: “We set up the community bereavement service originally to work with families who had a child with a life-limiting condition who would have been eligible to access Martin House. But since then it’s become evident there was more need out there from families who’ve had a sudden bereavement.” Martin House now accepts referrals from anyone whose child has died under the age of
Page 10
Diane added: “We work with individual parents or couples, it might be a couple of meetings, or it might be longer term. It’s very individual. Occasionally families come to Martin House, but mostly I do home visits, or meet them where they feel comfortable, like a local café.
Referrals are considered on an individual basis, and can be made up to two years after a child or young adult’s death. The service is also free of charge to families. Anyone who would like to find out more about the service or be considered for referral can contact the bereavement team at Martin House on 01937 845045 or email communitybereavement@martinhouse.org.uk

At Jigsaws we know that as part of the early years it is important that children learn about people and communities relevant to them and their families. In fact as part of the Early Years Curriculum ‘Shows interest in different occupations and ways of life’ is one of the statements we use to judge children’s development. Therefore opportunities to invite parents and local professionals to talk about their careers and how they are part of our community is really important. This year we had some fantastic visits from our local fire team, ambulance and police service. Our Jigsaws children got to see the trucks, cars and crew up close and ask some great questions. The visits also
coincided with Child Safety Awareness week which allowed practitioners to talk to children about how they can do things to keep safe, who they can talk to if they feel unsafe and the people who are there to help us. If you would like any more information on how Jigsaws Childcare can support your child’s development and learning please get in touch.

SIMPLY DEVINE HATS IS ONE IN A HUNDRED! Simply Devine Hats in Tadcaster is celebrating being one of only 100 small businesses in the country to be chosen in the annual Small Biz 100 campaign
The Small Business campaign is to raise awareness of small businesses and independent traders providing goods and services on the high street and internet. The campaign culminates in Small Business Saturday on December 1st.
as a specialist hat shop selling premium quality headwear. Customers have visited the shop from as far away as the south coast to ensure they have the perfect hat, hatinator or fascinator for a special occasion and Simply Devine headwear has been sent all over the world.
Simply Devine is one of just six Yorkshire businesses chosen this year to represent the campaign. The Simply Devine Hat Shop on York Road, Tadcaster, has been trading as a specialist hat shop for more than 14 years and last year took the bold decision to expand the business by designing and manufacturing its own range of millinery to sell as a wholesaler to other traders, and also for sale in the shop.
Liz said: “Being chosen as one of the Small Biz 100 campaign companies is a great opportunity for us to share our business news and to create awareness of our specialist products.
Owner Liz Devine-Wright originally set up the company with her mother, who has since retired,
Page 14
“We are not part of a chain so our headwear is quite exclusive – you are unlikely to bump into another person wearing one of our specialist pieces as we have limited the stock in each colour and design. Yet we still have thousands of head pieces in our store of hats, hatinators and fascinators in every style and colour.”

Generation Games! A busy mum from Harrogate is taking her preschool music and dancing classes into care homes after being inspired by a television documentary
Nikki Baum runs Boogie Babes groups in Harrogate, Wetherby and Boroughbridge. Her classes are designed to encourage children and adults to interact through song, dance and games while being relaxed. Nikki said: “This project is designed to bring the old and the young together in a mutually beneficial environment. I took inspiration from Channel 4’s ‘Old People’s Home for Four Year Olds’, which took preschool sessions to a dementia unit. I thought it was a great idea and something I wanted to try.” Nikki, who originally trained as a nurse and has also worked with children and teenagers in a variety of roles, said: “After watching the documentary I realised the massive impact the sessions had on both parties. Children are open-minded and they love attention and take an interest in adults. At the same time, children learn quite mature skills from adults so this inter-generational engagement is reciprocal. There has been lots of research done about this kind of interaction and all of it is positive.”
Page 16
Research completed after the ‘Old People’s Home for Four Year Olds’ programme was aired showed that at the start of the experiment, nearly all of the residents in the care home identified as depressed. After six weeks of engaging with the youngsters, none of them identified as depressed and they had completely changed their outlook on life and their hopes for the future. Nikki said: “I love using props such as pompoms, teddies, parachutes, instruments and bubbles as well as meeting new friends such as Baby Shark, Humpty Dumpty and Baa Baa Black Sheep! You can’t cure arthritis completely, but you can increase confidence and, with the help and encouragement of the children, we’d like to see our older folks doing things they never imagined they’d do again – jumping, dancing and rolling around on the floor! If it’s successful, I believe the classes will bridge the gap between the different generations in the area.” Find our more about Boogie Babes Generations sessions at www.boogiebabes.biz/northyorkshire.

‘ONE YORKSHIRE’ SUPPORTED BY SELBY DISTRICT A scheme designed to give more powers given by the government to Yorkshire under the control of an elected mayor has been backed by 18 out 20 Yorkshire authorities Selby District Council, along with 17 other local authorities in Yorkshire and the Mayor of the Sheffield City Region, is pursuing a devolution agreement with the Government known as ‘One Yorkshire’.
It is estimated that a One Yorkshire devolution
The One Yorkshire agreement would see the creation of a Mayor of Yorkshire in 2020 so that decisions currently taken by the Government in London would in future be taken in the region. It would also allow Yorkshire to have access to funding and other benefits currently enjoyed by areas which already have devolution agreements such as Greater Manchester and the West Midlands.
a One Yorkshire devolution agreement, includ-
Page 20
agreement could help create 200,000 additional jobs and raise incomes by £500 per person over and above current economic forecasts. In March, a document setting out the vision for ing the creation of a Mayor of Yorkshire, was submitted to the Government. Supporters of the scheme believe that it will raise standards of living for people in the area, close the UK jobs gap and boost productivity by enabling the region to tackle its economical, environmental and social challenges.

Welcome to the first in a series of questions commonly asked by employers at Universal Credit events
Universal Credit question and answers What are the benefits of Universal Credit for employers? Claimants can be flexible about working more or adhoc hours because Universal Credit has no restrictions on the number of hours worked. It automatically responds to fluctuations in earnings, and allows claimants to keep receiving Universal Credit, making work pay. How are claimants informed that they can now work more than 16 hours without losing their benefit? Claimants can get help and advice from GOV.UK and from Jobcentre staff. Work coaches explain the changes at their interview when they make a claim and at further meetings. How do work coaches help claimants increase their earnings and become more
financially independent? They explain how they can be better off working more. They encourage claimants to discuss with their employer how they can increase their chances of earning more, for example by improving their skills. How is the information employers supply to HMRC linked to the DWP? When a claimant is accepted as eligible for Universal Credit, DWP verifies their identity and Universal Credit sends an electronic message to HMRC. HMRC marks the individual’s record as being a Universal Credit claimant and automatically passes Pay As You Earn (PAYE) data supplied in relation to that individual to DWP. How quickly does information that employers supply to HMRC transfer to DWP?
Employers should supply PAYE information to HMRC on or before the day employees are paid. PAYE information is sent by HMRC in real time. This is Real Time Information (RTI). HMRC sends relevant data on Universal Credit claimants to DWP several times daily. This means the information supplied will be with DWP on the same day or on the next day, at the latest. What happens if RTI data is submitted late? This could mean that your employees receive too much or too little Universal Credit. You could also risk receiving a penalty if you fail to submit PAYE details on time. For more information see the Running Payroll guidance at GOV.UK. Don’t miss the next edition of Our Goole for more Q&As on Universal Credit.

HOROSCOPES Oct/Nov Issue 39 - October/November 2018
Aquarius
(20th Jan-18th Feb) You are the humanitarian of the zodiac and it’s time to express your originality and inventiveness in your job and eliminate what’s not working.
Pisces
Gemini
(21st May-20th June) Look at what you eat, how much sleep you get, if you exercise regularly and make changes in these areas so that you create a vibrant, healthy mind/ body/spirit.
Cancer
(19th Feb-20th March) Normally gentle and compassionate, it will surprise you how easy it will be to blast anything out of sight that prevents you from expressing your inventiveness.
(21st June- 22nd July) You’ve had to be more responsible for your feelings and emotional well-being. You’ll have one more opportunity to create internal support structures.
Aries
Leo
Libra
(23rd Sept-22nd Oct) If you’re cashing in now it’s because you deserve it. You’re reaping what you’ve sown over the last 12 years as it appears that everyone is your raving fan.
Scorpio
(23rd Oct-21st Nov) Expect things to really heat up as you become at one with your passion. When you’re focused on your heart’s desire, there’s no one more determined and relentless than you.
Sagittarius
(21st March-19th April) While you are always prepared to go it alone because others can’t keep up with your pace, you know that when you align with others, it’s much more fulfilling.
If there is friction at home or underlying tension, try to remember when you felt similar energies as a child. Create an amazing present out of that past.
(22nd Nov-21st Dec) Wherever you need clarity and direction in your life, ask for answers in your dreams, because while the body sleeps the soul never does.
Taurus
Virgo
Capricorn
(20th April-20th May) Normally you abhor confrontation, but underneath that desire for peace your soul wants greater intimacy and the only way is to be willing to dance in the fire.
(23rd July-22nd Aug)
(23rd Aug-22nd Sept) Don’t be so anal about everything having to be just so. You can miss the miracle of life if you’re so focused on every little detail.
(22nd Dec-19th Jan) Take a long hard look at the quality of your relationships, both personal and business. This is a great time to set boundaries and ask for what you want.

COUNCIL INVESTMENT FOR SUMMIT AND SELBY LEISURE CENTRE IMPROVEMENT WORKS Selby District Council has agreed to a near-quarter million pound investment for making changes to meet growing needs from customers There’s increasing demand for exercise classes and spaces to hold children’s parties and events at the site, so the council has decided to remove the existing ski slope and introduce a new space that can be used to support lots of different activities. Cllr Mark Crane, Leader of the Council and the executive member with responsibility for leisure services, said: “Summit is such a great facility for Selby, the district and beyond – we want to make sure that we keep it that way by offering the things people really want.”
“It’s become clear that although the skiing was initially a draw for people, it’s not proved to be as popular as other activities. This is about making the best use of the space to make sure Summit can continue to go from strength to strength.” All other activities at Summit are unaffected, including the popular climbing wall, adventure play area, ride and skate park, aerial trek and bowling. The improvement works will also open up a new upstairs link with the adjacent leisure centre, giving customers easier access to changing facilities. Work is scheduled to take place this year and will take four months.
Tadcaster Albion’s Youth Cup reaction Two-goal man JP Vass always believed that Tadcaster could cause an upset against local rivals York City. He said: “It felt good to get the win, especially for us lads who have been at York before. We knew if we played our game we could get a result and every single one of the lads showed they wanted to win.”
He added: “The goals came out of us catching them out and taking our chances. I knew I’d get a chance and thankfully I took both of the ones I got. To score that late was very emotional for me for certain reasons but I couldn’t have done it without the lads giving 100% throughout the game.”
