Tadcaster spor receives nation A young sportsman from Tadcaster has received £1,000 through donations ensuring he can travel to Geneva this summer after he was selected to play for the English National Mencap Football Squad

Jake Vicars, 23, who has Down’s syndrome, was selected for the squad along with various others across the nation. Mencap is responsible for bringing together the best disabled football players, and ensuring they can showcase their talents out in Switzerland every summer. However, the costs associated with the trip are high, so the Tadcaster community have pulled together raising over £1,000 for the cause. All

Page 6

further donations will go to Mencap to help with the work they do. Speaking to the Tadcaster Echo, Hilary Vicars (Jake’s mother) said she was incredibly proud of Jake’s achievements. “Of course we are incredibly proud of him, if you would have told me he would be doing this 23 years ago there is no way I would have believed you.

Issue 42 - April/May 2019

rts enthusiast nal recognition “We are incredibly thankful for everyone’s donations, everyone from within Tadcaster and those that are not from the area. We can assure you that Jake will give 100% and make everyone proud.

“There were three players that got invited from his team, and Jake was the only one that made it into to the squad.” It is not the first time he has been called up to represent his nation, however, with Jake being an accomplished swimmer. The talented sportsman is part of the Team GB’s Down’s syndrome swimming team. Hilary also added that Jake has just one night off a week, due to his busy training schedule. “Football is not his only sport, he is a swimmer for Team GB’s Down’s syndrome team – he only gets

Wednesday nights off!

“Jake is busy on Mondays, Fridays and Sundays, where he trains with the Harrogate Hot Shots swimming team. He then dedicates a period of time on Saturdays training with another young swimmer, where he is mentored by a GB coach.” Other training for Jake includes his time with the rest of his teammates at Harrogate Gateway FC, which takes place on a Tuesday evening, alongside his kickboxing classes on a Thursday. On 2nd April, Jake and his brother, a motorbike racer, appeared live on BBC Radio York, where the duo both discussed their sports live on air! From everyone at the Tadcaster Echo, we would firstly like to congratulate Jake on his national call-up, and secondly the people of Tadcaster for making this possible!

National recognition for local Thai kitchen

Tikk’s Thai Kitchen has reached the final four in the Golden Chopsticks Awards following their entry in the ‘Best Street Food’ category Competing against 80 other businesses, Tikk’s Thai Kitchen has been recognised for its outstanding Asian cuisine served on the streets of Yorkshire. The kitchen is transported around in a van, operating at a range of different events from food festivals to weddings. Tikk’s will be found cooking traditional southern Thai recipes, honed and crafted over years in the catering industry. The awards were co-founded by Gok Wan, and aim to celebrate the success of oriental food excellence in the UK. Voted for by customers of the Kitchen, they are now invited to the Marriot Hotel in London on Monday 29th April where the winners will be announced. We caught up with Nicola Barwick, part of Tikk’s Thai Kitchen team, who said everyone was ‘delighted’ with the recognition they have received. “Of course we are delighted, to even get this far is a massive achievement. It is a very prestigious award so to be in the running is something we are proud of.” “We were actually approached by the awards, and this led to people having to vote for us online. We

Page 14

received a high amount of votes and consequently have been invited to London, where it will hopefully be a very good evening.” Speaking on the Golden Chopsticks website, Gok Wan said: “The Golden Chopsticks Awards 2019 aims to build on the success of year one, creating an even bigger and better celebration of oriental food excellence in the UK, and growing the number of establishments taking part. “Whether it’s a well-loved local Chinese takeaway, or an exquisite fine dining fusion restaurant, we want to celebrate everything the industry has to offer.”

Local woman offe in aid of cance

Tadcaster local Elizabeth-Ann Walton is doing her bit to ensure more women are getting checked for signs of cervical cancer by offering her childcare services to mothers Elizabeth, who was once diagnosed with human papillomavirus (HPV) which can lead to cancer, has just received the 10 year all-clear from her early stage cervical cancer diagnosis and is now offering to provide free childcare, encouraging busy mothers to make time for their smear test.

Page 16

The kind gesture has had an overwhelming response on Facebook, with the Ofstedregistered childminder’s work being appreciated by many locals. Speaking to the Tadcaster Echo, Elizabeth said it was something that she is very passionate about, and is a topic that women

must talk about if awareness is to be raised. “Many women feel a little embarrassed; scared it may hurt or just see it as a bit of a faff. No one likes them but we don’t talk about them, it’s still a taboo subject. I really want to get everyone talking openly about it.

Issue 42 - April/May 2019

ers helping hand er prevention “If anyone wants my help for childcare or just reassurance and a hand to hold, then I can be contacted. If we do not talk about it then how will any woman know she’s not alone!” Speaking about her gesture, Elizabeth said she had seen a few childminders do similar things across the nation, and was keen to get involved.

about my symptoms as it didn’t seem like much, but I thought I’d better check. I was so scared at first as they told me I had HPV, and this was around the time Jade Goody was diagnosed, but once I found out they got everything out I was so relieved. I just knew then that I had to get as many women as I could to go have their smear.”

“I saw that other childminders were offering childcare so women could go and get their smear, and as I have had it myself (I’ve just been given my 10 year all clear) I wanted to join in.”

She added “A smear test is not as painful, embarrassing or as scary as the treatment is. I have also joined a campaign to bring the age of smear tests down to 18 as there are too many young people passing away unnecessarily.”

“I almost didn’t go to the doctor

With Elizabeth offering to look

after children so their mothers can go be checked, she also shared an insight as to what the smear test looks for. “A smear test checks for changes on the cervix. These can be abnormal cells which could develop into cervical cancer. Most cervical cancers can now be cured or prevented if detected early enough. I know from my own experience. I had treatment for early-stage cervical cancer caused by HPV. Elizabeth can be contacted via her Facebook page, under the name ‘Elizabeth-ann Walton.’ Do not hesitate to get in touch, and she will be sure to help out.

This month, Business Support Specialist Heidi Green talks us through the tax credit scheme

Research and Development Tax Credits These were introduced by the HMRC in the year 2000 to reward innovation. However, many companies appear to still be unaware that they can make a claim for this relief or indeed believe that it is only associated with hi-tech or scientific projects. It is surprising just who can qualify for this generous allowance.

failures occur. A report last year from the HMRC stated that tax credit claims were made the previous year worth £3.5bn. However, it is not an easy process and the HMRC’s guidance has put off a lot of businesses. Therefore it is probably wise to use one of the many specialist firms who do this day in day out.

As well as new innovation to the business, claims can be made for modifying an existing product, process or system. It can even be claimed on unsuccessful projects. It is understood by the very nature of R&D that

Jobcentreplus is working with Unseen, an award-winning organisation working towards a world without any kind of slavery by supporting, equipping and influencing.

HIGHLIGHTING MODERN SLAVERY Modern slavery is real. It is happening in our communities. An unseen crime, it hides in takeaways, hotels, car washes, nail bars and private homes. The Home Office predicts that there may be as many as 13,000 victims in the UK alone. There is no typical victims of slavery. They can be men, women and children of all ages and cut across the population, but it is normally more prevalent amongst the most vulnerable, minority or socially excluded groups. In 2017, the UK Modern Slavery Helpline indicated that 2,288 potential victims of modern slavery cases were men, while 1,547 were women. By supporting survivors and vulnerable people through specialist services, Unseen

can enable them to recover safely and develop resilient, independent lives.

can call 08000 121 700 any time night or day for advice, guidance or support.

By equipping stakeholders with training, advice and resources, Unseen can better identify and support actual and potential victims of slavery.

As a victim-centred organisation, Unseen, through the helpline works with callers and potential victims at their pace to help them consider their options and make informed decisions. Callers do not need to give their details if they do not want to and support can be tailored to the person’s circumstances and location.

By influencing society through systemic change, Unseen can use its practical experience, research and survivor stories to inspire change in legislation, policy, and consumer choices. The UK’s 24/7 Modern Slavery Helpline is also an excellent means of accessing confidential and independent information and advice from specialists trained in all aspects of modern slavery. Potential victims, statutory agencies, frontline professionals, businesses and members of the public

VOLUNTEERS DAMPEN EFFECTS OF SERIOUS FLOODS People have been helping Tadcaster Albion FC get back on their feet following the recent floods which have impacted the club for the second time in the past four years

TAFC once again felt the effects of living next to the River Wharfe, as the constant overnight rainfall saw water fill the pitch on Sunday 17th March. The club encouraged volunteers to come help out around the ground to ensure their next fixtures could be played, a cry for help which was well received by locals. The community pulled together in any way they could by helping out with various jobs around the i2i Stadium. This ran alongside the club setting up a JustGiving page. We spoke to media manager Jay Taylor, who discussed the adverse impacts of the flooding and the club’s appreciation for all the volunteers’ efforts. The club require funds to repair the tractor, lawn mowers and many other pieces of equipment used for pitch maintenance; which

were all damaged from being under water. “It is a real shame to see our club flood again but we have to count ourselves lucky on this occasion because it didn’t reach the clubhouse unlike 2015. “If it had reached the clubhouse, there is little doubt it would have been a disaster, as realistically we have only just recovered from the floods of 2015. “Thankfully we have an excellent team of volunteers who have been down last week cleaning up the mess that was left over. We at the club would like to thank everyone that come down and gave up their time”. If you wish to donate to TAFC’s cause, please visit https://www.justgiving. com/crowdfunding/tafc-flood?utm_ term=JeMnZ8VBV.
