Local gym raises £10,000 for St Gemma’s Hospice A local gym has reached its target of raising £10,000 after one of its member’s close friends sadly passed away from prostate cancer last year that St Gemma’s would be the chosen charity, following their generous work for those who are suffering with cancer and other life-limiting illnesses.
Charlie Hobson, who runs Principal Fitness, set a goal to reach £10,000 by participating in various different challenging events throughout 2018 with a team of other members.
Page 6
Principal Fitness is a small gym run out of Boston Spa Academy. Each year the gym aims to raise money for charity, and after member Ross’ close friend Dom sadly passed away, Charlie decided
Charlie told Tadcaster Echo: “We raised the money through a variety of events during 2018. Myself, one of our instructors Greg and Ross ran a marathon in April. Ross also ran the Edinburgh marathon a bit later on in the year as well as walking the Yorkshire’s Three Peaks. “We also ran a variety of gym events/challenges with prizes across the year. Donations were taken from members

during these events. Our goal for 2018 was to raise £10,000 for St Gemma’s which we are really happy to have achieved! “At the start of the year we weren’t sure if a £10,000 target was too ambitious, however, we thought if we all worked as a team and put on plenty of challenges and events we could get there. I’m really proud of the hard work everyone involved put in to help us smash the target and would like to thank everyone who donated. “I’d also like to ensure Ross Trutch, owner of Aztech Loft Rooms, and a member here at
Principal Fitness is recognised and thanked for all the fundraising he did, including completing the Manchester marathon with me last April, plus he also completed the Edinburgh marathon in May.
“We weren’t sure if £10,000 was too ambitious, but I’m really proud of the hard work everyone put in to help us smash the target” Unfortunately, last year, Ross lost his best friend, Dominic,
who received fantastic care and support from St Gemma’s Hospice. We know the money raised will go a long way in ensuring the Hospice can continue to offer fantastic care to individuals and their families at such a difficult time.” Huge congratulations to Charlie and his team of fundraisers at Principal Fitness for their efforts. The donated £10,000 is sure to bring an array of benefits to St Gemma’s hospice, ensuring the patients are in the best hands possible.

THE CAVIAR FARM ON OUR DOORSTEP! The county may be the home of the Yorkshire pudding but now an unexpected luxury food is being produced in our area and it’s caviar!
The delicacy is normally shipped from the chilly Caspian Sea to grace the delicatessen counters of stores such as Harrods. But now KC Caviar Ltd in South Milford is Britain’s premier sturgeon hatchery and caviar farm. As well as buying direct from the company, you can also find KC Caviar stocked in Aldi stores across the county. The company prides itself on creating caviar ethically, ensuring the eggs and fish are not harmed. The KC process involves naturally spawned eggs which are harvested and turned into caviar, year after year, until the fish are eventually retired into a protected conservation lake or river. In 2019, the caviar farm is planning to open two new farms in the UK plus Ireland and other parts of the world.
Page 10
John Addy, director of the company, told Tadcaster Echo: “We operate the only farms in the world producing top quality caviar in a wholly ethical, sustainable and cruelty-free way. Our caviar is of the highest quality, endorsed by Michelin-starred chefs across the UK. “We’re also looking for like-minded farmers who want to set up their own ethical caviar farm, and will guide them through every step required to operate under this world-leading patented process.” So, with Valentine’s Day coming up, why not whip up a delicious homemade meal for your loved one instead and treat yourself to some delicious caviar without having to splash the cash! For more information on KC Caviar, visit kccaviar.co.uk

RUNNING MILES TO HELP PLENTY SMILE If you’re planning to get fitter in the new year, Martin House Hospice Care for Children and Young People has the perfect challenge to help you keep your resolution
Martin House is launching its first-ever virtual event, ‘Miles for Smiles’ – which invites people to sign up to complete a marathon throughout the month of March. If you have always wanted to try completing a marathon, now’s the perfect chance to do so. Walk, run, swim or cycle your way to 26.2 miles – or come up with your own unique method to complete the challenge. While you prepare for the challenge, you can receive sponsors from family and friends to support Martin House. Ellie Barker, events fundraiser, said: “We want this to be an enjoyable and accessible challenge that anyone can join in with – either on their own or as a family. “This is your marathon, your way, whether you’re already a keen runner, walker, cyclist or swimmer, or you’re interested in taking up a new activity for the new year.
Page 14
“Miles for Smiles allows you to complete the challenge in your own time, whether that’s going for a walk on your lunchbreak, or heading out for a bike ride with the family at weekends.” Martin House cares for children and young people with life-limiting conditions – and their families – across West, North and East Yorkshire. If it’s at a hospice in hospitals and in their own homes, Martin House is always here to provide care including respite stays through to end-of-life care and bereavement support for families. It’s free to register to take part, with participants asked to raise a minimum of £100 in sponsorship. There is a downloadable wall planner to help you track your progress, and everyone who registers will receive a Facebook profile graphic to show they are taking part. To find out more information about the charity or to sign up to the event visit www.martinhouse.org.uk/milesforsmiles.

DON’T THROW AWAY YOUR EMPTY CRISP PACKETS! Walkers has launched a nationwide recycling scheme for crisp packets, which claims to be the first of its kind in the UK Teaming up with TerraCycle, the packets will be cleaned and shredded, ready to be made into small plastic pellets that will be used to make everyday items such as outdoor furniture, plant pots and watering cans. Walkers are aiming to make all their packaging 100% recyclable, compostable or biodegradable by 2025. There are over 100 collection points across the UK and one of them is the Church Fenton Community Shop. This means that people around Tadcaster can easily drop off any crisp packets they have and help the environment. Church Fenton Community Shop was set up after the previous owners decided to retire. Many of the volunteers have to fit the shop around their lives. Stewart Harris, chair of the management committee, told Tadcaster Echo: “The shop was a
Page 16
vital centre of the community and the village life wanted to keep it up and running. As a business we are committed to improving the quality of Village life and to supporting all sectors of the community. “We see recycling as a valuable part of that service and are looking to become a hub where all villagers can contribute and help us with our vision. We will be increasing our range over the coming weeks to include Pringles tubes and pet food pouches.” So next time you come to throw your crisp packets away, make sure you head down to Church Fenton Community Shop where they can be recycled! For more information on how you can get involved in the campaign, visit https://www. walkers.co.uk/recycle or call into the Church Fenton Community Shop.

We carry on with the third instalment of a series of commonly asked questions by employers at Universal Credit events
Universal Credit: questions and answers part three How do bonuses affect Universal Credit payments? Usually bonuses will be assessed along with salary and depending upon the individual’s circumstances, could reduce their benefit for that period. The claimants will continue on UC automatically for their next payment.
report earnings via PAYE.
What happens if employees say they have received a wrong UC payment? If the correct PAYE information has been sent to HMRC by the employer on or before a person has been paid, employers should tell claimants to contact DWP directly. Guidance is available on the HMRC PAYE in real time (RTI) technical FAQs.
If someone takes multiple jobs, how do the earnings work? The PAYE information from each employer is used to calculate total earnings in each assessment period. This total is used to calculate UC payments.
Do recruitment agencies need to report staff on RTI too? If the agency is the employer, then the agency will need to
How will employers know who is on benefits? Employers do not need to know who is on benefits, but claimants can tell their employer if they wish. Employers should use exactly the same processes for UC claimants as they do for all their staff.
Employers should not need to verify earnings to DWP if they are reporting earnings using PAYE. What is the current rule on zero hour contracts? UC is designed to be responsive to fluctuations in earnings, as payments are based on income in a specific
monthly assessment period. If the claimant’s earnings drop or they receive no income, then their UC payment will be re-calculated automatically. The flexibility of these types of contracts is attractive to some individuals, but people on UC are not required to accept zero hour contracts which require exclusivity. How does Universal Credit help women returning to work after having a child? UC not only allows people to work any number of hours and still receive benefit; it will also allow people working under 16 hours to claim help with childcare support. Parents can claim back up to 85% of paid out registered childcare costs, up to a monthly limit of £646 for one child, or £1,108 for two or more children. This month, Business Support Specialist Heidi Green tells us that the way you communicate with your staff will determine the success of your business
You don’t need to be aggressive 150 x 112mm when (typical 15cm xyou’re 3 columnsbeing format) assertive Assertiveness means knowing what you want and how you feel and react about things. It also means you listen to others and understand their viewpoints to help your understanding. Assertiveness is not forcing your ideas on someone else, getting your own way, manipulation or even being aggressive. What you want is a favourable outcome
for yourself and others, giving a clear understanding of what is needed from each individual to achieve a positive outcome. To do this, you need to be able to communicate in an assertive tone. This will help build respect and get things done. Your expectations and what you need to complete projects. Keep it clear and simple and avoid ambiguity.

New year, new challenge #TeamTLC will line up again this year for the Total Warrior event on Sunday 23rd June at Bramham Park
After the success of last year’s entry, Tadcaster Leisure Centre will be entering another team to compete in one of the most challenging, fun and rewarding obstacle courses there is, Total Warrior! Now in it’s ninth year, the 12k course gives you the full Warrior experience and it comes packed with the world’s best obstacles. Tadcaster Echo spoke to fitness instructor Harry Bell about the challenge. Harry said: “We have entered a team for this year’s Total Warrior following the success of last year’s event. We ran bootcamp sessions for 12 weeks leading up to the event, and we built a great relationship with members of the local community and it helped increase their levels of
Page 30
confidence, self-esteem and team work, as well as their overall fitness levels. “We aim to do the same this year and are confident of bringing a bigger team to the event (we had 12 last year) and inspire more people to participate and enjoy a healthy lifestyle.” Harry is a level 3 personal trainer who also has a BSc Hons degree in sports coaching and health sciences. He specialises in improving core strength and cardiovascular fitness. Harry also promotes fat loss and calorie burning through resistance training. For more information on how to join Tadcaster Leisure Centre’s Total Warrior group, email Harry at harry.bell@ihlmail.org
