Local support group bringing Christmas parties to hundreds of children

Our Child - The Autistic Spectrum Disorder for Doncaster families was founded by Rebecca Burns in 2015 when her son Ollie was diagnosed with autism aged 2.

Realising there was little support for parents of diagnosed children, Rebecca set up the online support group with the idea of it being a safe space for parents to vent, ask questions and simply come together and share what can be a lonely journey when you feel there is nowhere to turn.

Gradually the group grew and there are now over 1,300 active members and eight moderators who help to manage the group, all of whom are parents to autistic children. It’s more of a community than simply an area for support as more and more people join together either online or as part of planned session.

The group is well-known for its attempts to fundraise, they are not a registered charity, nor affiliated with any larger groups. As a result of this they are not eligible for funding and rely on donations and support from group members and the wider community.

Rebecca told Thorne Local: “It’s humbling to see how many businesses and individuals in Doncaster do want to help to make a change and give children and parents opportunities to come together in a non-judgemental and friendly way.

“We always welcome news members and supporters. It is working together as a community that helps us to be successful and provide much-needed relief and fun times for the children and parents within the group.

“Our favourite event is the Christmas event, the Christmas parties cater for around 100 children and Santa often makes an appearance to gift each of the children a chocolate selection box treat.

“This year’s event is set to be bigger and better than any other we have done so far thanks to the generosity and kindness of both the members and general public. We are always on the lookout for opportunities for donations, though, so if anyone is able to help it would be wholeheartedly appreciated.”
