Design PURPOSEFUL PLANNING Practices Three things we know for sure:

1. Energy flows where your attention goes. 2. If it’s not in your calendar, it’s not going to happen. 3. Three is a magic number. Weekly Schedules By using the concept of "planning with purpose" you are setting an intention regarding where you will focus your attention. Just watch, after creating a regular practice and planning with purpose consistently, you will find you are actually doing what you've set out to do, and you will have more time for your creative pursuits. Start here. Begin by deciding that 3 is your new magic number. This is not about any mythical power that the number 3 has (although 3 is special1) but because: 1. Overwhelm won't hit you with a list of 3 items. 2. You can actually remember a list that only has 3 items and 3. Because of 1 & 2, you will actually accomplish your entire list!. And you'll be able to look at your days, weeks, months and life and say "I did what I said I was going to do!" Don't worry, you'll still be allowed to make longer lists! Just in a different way. More about that later, For now: 3 daily, weekly, medium, long and lifetime goals.

The number 3 is said to resonate with the energies of optimism and joy, inspiration and creativity, imagination and intelligence, friendliness, kindness and compassion - and all sorts of other cool stuff. Google it. Not now. That will take you away from your plan! 1

PURPOSEFUL PLANNING (cont.) What or Who Do You Appreciate? We know you're grateful. But what is it you appreciate about what you're grateful for? Pay attention and choose three things or people each week that you appreciate. At the end of the week, transfer your these items to your Appreciation Archive. Nothing makes your day better than re-reading everything you appreciate. It reads like poetry!

Reach Out and Touch. 3 • 2 • 1 Connecting is critical to our happiness. Stay connected by paying attention to who you want to "reach out and touch" each week. Let these contacts be without an agenda. Simply make a connection. Let them know you’re thinking of them. People love to know they are noticed! 3 Calls 2 Notes (Handwritten is best! 1 face to face.

"ACTION TRIGGERS” are key An Action Trigger or more officially an "Implementation Intention," is a self-regulatory strategy in the form of an "if-then plan" that can lead to better goal attainment, as well as help in habit and behavior modification.

Whenever you think of a task, idea, or activity, think first about the TRIGGER, then add it to the appropriate Trigger list. SCHEDULE these action items on your calendar only when you’re really going to do them.

Triggers are the "where and when" a future task will be done. According to the science, by visualising or picturing where and when, our brain creates a neural image of the desired event, which then triggers a desired action when the future situation or circumstance arises.1

Paper Planner or Electronic Calendar? A Solution. Paper Planners are the best!! But Electronic devices are so handy... Here’s what you do. Use your ELECTRONIC calendar as your capture tool. It’s small, quick, clean. But live by your PAPER PLANNER. It’s visual. Tactile. Satisfying. It's in the "here and now" and doesn’t live in a cloud. Use color. Tape in business cards. Images. Draw pictures. Anything that will help you remember. (Visuals are processed 60,000X faster than text.!) Plus the act of writing in your paper planner boosts the probability that you'll remember it. Email me if you want the scientific facts! During your “purposeful planning" session: • Add any [NEW] items in your electronic calendar to your Planner. • Then re-assign them to the proper e-calendar (i.e. [Face to Face] [Virtual] etc). • Once they're re-assigned, you know they’ve been transferred to your planner. Tip: Use colors for each calendar - and match them in your paper & electronic planners. That way at a glance you know when you need to add travel time or be somewhere quiet with a phone or a computer. If you have any other great tips... email me!
