DESTINATION HAPPENINGS ABOUT INDONESIA

President Jokowi Driving Development at Lake Toba President Jokowi has identified Lake Toba in Northern Sumatra as one of the prime destinations in his plan to develop tourism across Indonesia. In an attempt to transplant the success of Bali in other areas equally rich in culture, landscapes and tourism potential, Toba has been earmarked for development and labeled ‘the Monaco of Indonesia’. Infrastructure and the quality of the roads connecting the area have been identified as the major obstacles in the government plan to turn Lake Toba into a world-class destination. To overcome these issues, two new toll roads are planned to connect Tebing Tinggi with Siantar and Siantar to Parapat; a 360-kilometer ring road around Lake Toba as well as a new bridge to the island of Samosir, located in the middle of the lake. Building work on the projects is scheduled to begin next year and is expected to be concluded within two years.

Jokowi himself was in Toba for the annual Indonesian independence day carnival on August 20th, where he took the opportunity to outline his plans and also express the imperative need for progress in the development of infrastructure throughout the region: “I ask the ministries in charge to realize the construction of the Lake Toba ring road. If the roads are damaged, visitor will not want to come”, said the president during his visit to Simanndo on Samosir. “The construction of the projects will help increase the welfare of the local people,” he added. Lake Toba is one of 10 tourism destinations prioritized and promoted by the government this year, along with the Borobudur Temple in Central Java, Labuan Bajo in East Nusa Tenggara, Wakatobi in Southeast Sulawesi, Tanjung Lesung in Banten and Mandalika in West Nusa Tenggara.

Indonesia Takes Centre Stage at World Travel Market London In a concerted effort to drive up international arrivals and reach the ambitious targets set by the government, Indonesia’s Tourism Ministry has signed a major sponsorship deal with WTM London to promote Wonderful Indonesia in the British and European market. The Indonesian government has set a target of 20 million annual visitors to Indonesia by 2019. Reaching this goal would be a significant achievement, as it would represent almost double last year’s total of 10.5m international arrivals. The solution, according to the Ministry of Tourism, is to expand the scope of Indonesia’s promotional activities into the global marketplace. The number of British visitors to Indonesia is experiencing strong growth, rising 21% year-on-year to 280,000 in 2015, making them a central demographic in the development of Indonesian inbound tourism. Arief Yahya, Tourism Minister, expects the sponsorship deal with WTM to help promote Indonesia’s attractions, highlight the on-going developments to infrastructure and bring Indonesia to the forefront of international tourism. “WTM is the biggest, most important global travel market in the world,” he said. “[It] enables us to promote our message of Wonderful Indonesia in a cost-efficient and effective manner to decision-makers and influencers from around the world.”

This year’s WTM London takes place from 7-9 November, with around 150 delegates from 53 companies in Indonesia scheduled to attend. “By participating in WTM 2016 and working with our partners in the travel trade, media, and airlines throughout the rest of the year, the ministry expects 2016 will be the best year ever and will keep international arrivals on track to reach a record 20 million by 2019,” he added. With new legislation designed to ease the arrival of foreign visitor, Indonesia has set to work improving the transport infrastructure of the archipelago around key tourism hotspots to help welcome international arrivals. With free visason-arrival for citizens of almost all countries, new airports and seaports being built or upgraded throughout the country, and simplified cruise ship regulations to encourage the growth of cruising, Indonesia is ready to welcome the world to its many beautiful islands. In addition to projects focusing on the UK, the Ministry of Tourism will continue branding and promotion efforts throughout Asia Pacific and the Middle East, with numerous plans slated to increase tourism promotion efforts in key European markets.

Panorama Collaborates with Galasys to Bring Chinese Tourists to Indonesia In an effort to increase the number of visitor arrivals to Indonesia from China, Panorama Sentrawisata and its subsidiary, Panorama Destination have signed an agreement with OM Solutions and Galasys PLC. Both Chinese IT companies develop software and digital platforms for Online Travel Agents (OTA), bringing greater potential for promotion and sales of the Panorama product online, directly targeting the growing Chinese market. The number of visitor arrivals from China continues to increase every year in Indonesia. In 2015, the country saw an increase of 17 per cent in the number of visitors to Bali compared to the previous year. Panorama has been aiming to capture the market potential of China since the beginning of 2015, when the company’s business strategy was set in place. “The market was large and already beginning to form, so we needed to understand how exactly we can catch this opportunity in a proper manner”, explained AB Sadewa, Senior Vice President of Brand and Communications at PT Panorama Sentrawisata Tbk. Galasys Plc currently controls a 70 per cent market share of ticket sales at theme parks in China. “A market share like this would have big potential for the development of leisure products in Indonesia, where China is one of the largest visitor contributors in the world, “added

Sadewa. This cooperation between Panorama and Galasys has been made in response to - and in anticipation of - the changing ways in which Chinese visitor are travelling to Indonesia. Currently around 80 per cent of Free Individual Travellers (FIT) make their travel bookings through an Online Travel Agent (OTA). This collaboration between Panorama and Galasys will harness the growth potential of the Chinese visitor sector with a Cloud Online Travel Agents (CLOTA) marketing model. Traditional Travel Agents (TTA) had dominated the market, but this new development makes products available in the online channel too. “Panorama has a product, Galasys has the digital platform for transaction systems, payment gateway and a network of online distribution channels linked to the Chinese market,” concluded Sadewa. The products to be included in the Galasys CLOTA marketing system include featured tours to Bali and beyond - destinations such as Wakatobi, Lake Toba, Pulo Cinta and Lombok. Renato Domini, CEO of Panorama Destination, also stated his intentions to develop this range of tours still further: “within the next year, we will continue to develop products that offer new destinations so the purpose of this cooperation can be achieved.”

FAA RULING OPENS NEW DIRECT FLIGHTS FROM USA TO INDONESIA

Indonesian airlines are looking forward to a range of new direct flights to and from North America thanks to a recent upgrade of the industry’s safety rating by the Federal Aviation Authority. Only countries with a Category 1 rating are permitted to open routes to the USA and Europe. Indonesia has had Category 2 status since 2007. A Category 1 rating is assigned to countries that satisfy the laws and regulations necessary to oversee air carriers, with a civil aviation authority that can demonstrate requisite standards in relation to technical expertise, trained personnel, recordkeeping or inspection procedures.

of regulators and operators remaining consistent in maintaining the safety standards to uphold this achievement.

The latest FAA audit began in early 2015 and assessed three main aspects of Indonesia’s air transport industry: regulations, operation and airworthiness. The review confirmed that Indonesian airlines’ resources are now in compliance with International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) safety standards and the Category 1 rating was granted to Indonesia. In a recent interview, Indonesia’s Transportation Ministry’s Director of Aircraft Operation and Airworthiness, Mohammad Alwi outlined the impact of this announcement: “The upgrade to Category 1 will bring trustworthiness to Indonesian airlines and aircraft industries, including the manufacturing side, the aircraft leasing business, the insurance and the economy.“ He also stressed the importance

The upgrade was announced shortly after Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport opened the doors of the brand new U$558 million Terminal 3. With the confirmation of Category 1 safety status and a state-of-the-art terminal ready to receive international arrivals, the way is clear for growth in Indonesia’s inbound tourism sector. A Garuda Indonesia spokesperson told the Wall Street Journal that the carrier is already considering services to New York or Los Angeles beginning next year. Garuda Indonesia plans to move its Jakarta international operations to the more spacious confines of Terminal 3 early next year and could be the primary beneficiary of the FAA’s new determination. The whole travel and tourism sector in Indonesia is set to reap the rewards of this upgrade from the FAA, due to the influx of American visitor and the elevated status it is sure to bring to the Indonesia aviation industry as a whole.

Taxi Links to Lake Toba From Silangit Airport More and more airlines are flying to Silangit Airport in Sumatra from all over Indonesia and beyond, connecting travellers to this developing hotspot of tourism. Medan lies about 5 hours’ drive from Lake Toba, Silangit lies closer but it is still some 1.5 hours ride from Lake Toba, so there remains a need for transport to get to the various towns around the Lake. Silangit is located in the North Tapanuli regency, and today flights to Silangit Airport are served by national flag

carrier Garuda Indonesia, Sriwijaya Air, Lion Air and Susi Air. Garuda serves Silangit also direct from Jakarta. Soon Silangit will be extended so it can receive larger aircrafts and its terminal much improved to be ready by early next year. In addition, extensive infrastructure improvements are being built in the area, including new roads and visitor facilities. Taking a taxi to your destination around Lake Toba is simple. The official taxi counter is located outside the arrival hall (outside the main building) with banner taxi’s tariffs well displayed. The taxi fare is calculated by destination to each district. New Flights Connecting Vietnam with Jakarta and Denpasar Vietnam Airlines has announced it is set to open two new direct flights linking Hanoi to Jakarta and Denpasar respectively. The Vietnamese government intends to strengthen ties and trade relations with Indonesia, whilst also facilitating easier travel for tourism. Vietnam is targeting visitor from Indonesia specifically and expects to see a marked increase in the number of Vietnamese visitors to Indonesia flowing in the opposite direction as a result of these new routes. „We want to increase the number of visitor visits from Indonesia to Vietnam and vice versa,“ said the Ambassador of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam to Indonesia, Hoang Anh Tuan, at recent celebrations to mark Indonesia’s independence. Both governments have identified tourism as a key growth sector, which can serve as a bridge between the two emerging Southeast Asian nations. The impact of international tourism can deliver a positive contribution to both countries, as well as maintaining long-standing political relations initiated by the founding fathers Sukarno and Ho Chi Min. Indonesia’s MICE sector is set to become a key beneficiary of the relationship with Vietnam. In 2013, the two countries exceeded their trade

target of US $ 5 billion and two years later, in 2015, the trade value between Indonesia and Vietnam reached US $ 5.59 billion, with the trend of the last three years representing an increase of 6.47 percent. Vietnam and Indonesia have seen an increasing number of their citizens visiting the other country, reaching about 100,000 in 2013 from nearly 95,000 a year earlier. According to the Bali Regional Office of Justice and Human Rights, Vietnamese arrivals to the island have been increasing steadily every year since 2009. In 2013, 9,495 Vietnamese nationals chose Bali for their holiday destination – an increase of nearly 15% on the previous year. Vietnam was one of the original members on Indonesia’s list of 15 countries that can enjoy visa-free travel and has since been included in each of the revised and expanded lists from October and June 2015 and March 2016. These relaxed visa regulations, combined with close diplomatic and corporate ties, have created a special relationship between these two ASEAN neighbors. Thanks to the new flights from Hanoi, tourism arrivals to Indonesia from Vietnam are expected to grow significantly in the coming months.

Garuda Indonesia Announces Plans For Flights to USA via Japan

Following on from the FAA ruling in August, Garuda Indonesia has unveiled plans to recommence flights to the United States starting next year. As expected, the airline will focus its new services on Los Angeles or New York, as these two cities represent the highest market potential. Garuda believes that the new flights between Indonesia and the US can attract up to 400,000 more visitors to Indonesia each year. Last month’s ruling from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed that Indonesia now complies with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) safety standards and has been granted a Category 1 rating. In response to the International Aviation Safety Assessment (IASA) Category 1 rating, Garuda Indonesia is now able to establish services to the US. Garuda Indonesia‘s Vice President of Corporate Communications, Benny S. Butarbutar, said, „Our plan to re-operate the US flight service is expected to strengthen Garuda‘s position as a global aviation player. With the upgraded rating

from FAA which recognizes the Indonesia aviation safety and security standard, we are trying to realize our plans sooner.“ In 2014, Garuda Indonesia entered into a codeshare partnership with Delta Airlines, a member of SkyTeam, for flights to Los Angeles and Seattle via Tokyo Haneda. Garuda has already started work on a feasibility study looking at market potency, profitable routes and transit permits from Japan‘s aviation authorities. „We are planning to operate wide body Boeing 777-300ER on US routes. The flight will transit at Tokyo

Narita prior to flying to the US from Jakarta. Japan still grants the ‚Fifth Freedom Right‘ to Indonesian carriers, which allows Garuda Indonesia to fill up the seats - and further increase the passenger load factor - for our flights to the US,“ Benny said. Garuda is the first airline to capitalize on the new FAA status and bring into effect previously agreed partnerships that can open up new channels and revenue streams, with a substantial new demographic of American visitors. With such plans already in place and the way clear for American arrivals, Indonesia’s tourism landscape is set to benefit and grow towards the government target of 20 million annual visitors by 2019.
