Diplomatic Familiarization trip to Riau Islands Demonstrates quality and investment potential in Indonesia Ambassadors to Indonesia from many countries - including South Korea, Chile, Peru, Papua New Guinea and Singapore - have taken part in a familiarization trip to Bintan and Batam in the Riau Islands, to see first-hand the potential for tourism in the region. The Foreign Ministry and the Ministry for Tourism jointly organized the trip, to demonstrate to ambassadors and diplomats how safe and convenient travel to Riau is, whilst also demonstrating the future potential of the area for investors.

Riau Islands ‘Show not Tell’ is the policy by which the Indonesian ministries hope to get their message across, allowing the benefits of travel to Riau to speak for themselves. In total, 62 diplomats and their wives were invited to join the familiarization trip, with many arriving directly from Jakarta and Singapore to participate in a series of leisure and sporting activities. They visited mangroves in Batam, played a round of golf in one of the region’s stellar resorts and enjoyed a dinner party held at the Bintan Lagoon Resort. Good infrastructure – Many members of the familiarization trip noted with surprise just how good the infrastructure of the area is; smooth roads, direct flights and convenient travel options gave a great indication of how convenient visiting the region can be. In total, 20,000 hectares of soil is allocated to tourism in Bintan, including some of the best resorts and golf courses to be found anywhere in the country.
A positive response was received from all who took part in the trip, with many expressing their satisfaction with the area and its potential for investment. Peter Llau, the Papua New Guinea Ambassador to Indonesia, was convinced of the region’s quality by the familiarization trip: “this place truly offers a world-class facility and this is what I’m going to tell people back home” he said. Several other diplomats articulated that they were so impressed with the infrastructure in the area that they would actually take a lesson or two with them back home. Indonesian Tourism Ministry officials have confirmed that there will be a series of follow-up programs and development to further improve and promote the area’s potential for tourism and investment.

Indonesia Opens its Oceans to International Yachts and Cruises As the largest archipelago in the world, Indonesia is a perfect destination for yachts and cruise trips. In order to attract more international yachts and cruise ships to the crystal clear Indonesian waters, the Ministry of Tourism of the Republic of Indonesia will host the Wonderful Indonesia Cruise Sales Mission in Sydney, Australia on 12th August 2016 at the Hilton Hotel, 488 George St. The event will demonstrate Indonesia’s commitment to developing the Australian tourism market while encouraging niche market sectors including cruises and yachts. The Indonesian government has implemented a number of policies that will enable greater ease of travel for seafaring holidaymakers. These include the waiver of cabotage so that cruise ships are able to embark and disembark at the appointed ports of Tanjung Perak in Surabaya, Tanjung Priok in Jakarta, Tanjung Benoa in Bali, Belawan in Medan and Makassar. The government has also eased the CIQP (customs, immigration, quarantine, and port authorities) procedures, simplified the sailing permit applications from one month to just one day and plans to build new marinas at Saumlaki, Ambon, Kupang, Tarakan, Labuan Bajo, Tanjung Pandan and Belitung. In addition, the Clearance and Approval for Indonesian Territory (CAIT) policy has been abolished, allowing yachters to register more easily online via http://yachters-indonesia.id.

Natural beauty and cultural richness make Indonesia an outstanding destination for tourists by land, air and sea. The waters surrounding the many islands of the archipelago are home to snorkeling, diving and swimming without parallel. The new short stay visa regulations will also permit travellers from 169 countries to visit Indonesia with greater ease and take a local charter vessel. Cruise traffic in Indonesia has recorded 266,000 passengers so far in 2016. The number is expected to grow as new destinations open up and legislation is eased. Much of this is expedition vessels, boutique vessels and vessels of limited capacity (up to 1,500 passengers). In general Australia is still the main market for Indonesia’s tourism industry. In the last two years, the number of Australian visitors to Indonesia was above 1 million, along with visitors from Malaysia, China and Singapore. The enchanting island of Bali is still considered by many as the number 1 destination in the Indonesian Archipelago. However, in years to come the island is expected to become a hub for onward travel to other outstanding locations in the archipelago. Confirming the vision, Indonesia’s Minister of Tourism, Arief Yahya stated: “We want to promote Bali and Beyond so that destinations close to Bali can also develop. After enjoying Bali visitors can continue on to other destinations such as Banyuwangi, Lombok, Wakatobi, Labuan Bajo and Mount Bromo”. New legislation, combined with growth in the cruising and yacht sector, will bring greater numbers of travellers than ever before to these outstanding tourist locations, connecting by the beautiful blue waters of Indonesia.

Indonesia’s Ministry of Tourism Targets 1.4 Million Australian Arrivals in 2016
As part of an ambitious five year target to attract 20 million arrivals to Indonesia by 2019, the Ministry of Tourism has embarked on a sales mission across one of its most important tourism markets; Australia. Australia represented 15 per cent of Indonesia’s inbound market, its fourth largest market behind China (17%), Malaysia (18%) and Singapore (23%). The Ministry is targeting an ambitious 1.4 million Australian arrivals in 2016 and has commenced a nation-wide sales mission with this aim in mind. Indonesia is continuing its wide-reaching program to promote 10 priority tourism destinations “Beyond Bali”, which include Lake Toba in North Sumatra, Bangka and Belitung Islands east of Sumatra, Tanjung Lesung, Thousand Islands, Borobodor and Mount Bromo in eastern Java, Mandalika and Labuan Bajo in Nusa Tenggara, Wakatobi in South Sulawesi and Morotai in North Maluku. The Ministry of Tourism’s ambitious target of 20 million arrivals by 2019 is helped by the recent approval of free visas for 169 countries, including Australia. Increased flight connectivity from Australia is also expected to assist the Ministry’s target of 1.4 million Australian arrivals, with over 180 flights connecting Australian ports with either Bali or Jakarta each week.

Indonesia, Made Easier: New Direct Flights from Hong Kong to Manado Thanks to Citilink Indonesia Airlines, it’s never been easier for Chinese tourists to visit Indonesia. Citilink Indonesia Airlines have expanded their international tourism services in Indonesia by opening a new direct flight, connecting Hong Kong and Manado. This new service will reduce travel times for inbound Chinese tourists, allowing them to begin their holidays in Manado with no need for connecting flights or transfers. Mr Hans Nugroho, Commercial Director of Citilink Indonesia, outlined the benefits of the new link: „Tourists from Hong Kong and China no longer need to transit in Jakarta before going on a trip, so it is now much easier for us to fly direct from Hong Kong to Manado,“ he said. It is estimated that by the end of August 2016, Citilink will accommodate 3,000 tourists via this new inbound service.

The first 174 passengers to arrive in Manado were personally welcomed by Mr Nugroho and a group of Indonesian musicians, playing Chinese songs on traditional Kolintang instruments. The welcome party embodied the close cultural connection that exists between Manado and Hong Kong. Also present at the inaugural arrival were Deputy Governor of Manado Steven Kandouw, Manado Mayor Vicky Lumentut-Mor Bastian, General Manager of Angkasa Pura Halendra Waworuntu and the Head of North Sulawesi Tourism Happy Korah. This new route from Citilink also opens up a brand new gateway to North Sulawesi, making Manado a perfect travel hub for Citilink travellers looking to connect with other areas in the north of the archipelago. Tourists from China have been identified as the largest group of visitors to Indonesia by The Ministry of Tourism. Indonesia expects to welcome as many as 2 million tourists from China in 2016. The new, direct flights from Citilink will make Chinese visitors’ journeys easier then ever before, paving the way for millions of holidaymakers in Indonesia.

LOT Polish Airlines launched a chartered service between Warsaw and Denpasar, Bali on June 23, marking the first direct service between Poland and Indonesia. The airline’s Boeing 787 Dreamliner carrying 255 passengers arrived in Bali on June 24 at 06.00. Indonesian ambassador for Poland Peter Gontha, when gracing the launch of the maiden flight at Chopin Airport, said the service was a historic moment for tourism between the two countries. He said: “Many people do not believe in the potential of travellers from Central and East Europe, (but) the Indonesian embassy has always made an effort to create new markets for Indonesia.” The chartered service is a collaborative effort between Rainbow Tours Poland and Panorama Destination Indonesia. It will be available every two weeks until March 2017 and Panorama Destination targets to bringing 5,000 travellers from Poland.
Tourists are scheduled not only to visit Bali but also travel to other destinations like Java, Komodo-Flores, Tanjung Puting-Kalimantan, Toraja and Papua. Ricky Setiawanto, director of Panorama Destination, said: “Arrivals will be based on a scheduled service every two weeks, with an average of 250 tourists per arrival. “The strategy to bring tourists by chartered flight back-to-back is a new trend and has two major benefits – it is an easier way for tourists to visit, and it also brings in more tourists to Indonesia.” Szymon Chojnacki, director of product at Rainbow Tours said the high demand for travelling from Poland to Indonesia over the last few years was also a strong reason for this initiative.

First in Indonesia, Airport Cinema Now Available at this airport
Waiting for flights can be boring. Delays, complications and difficulties can sometimes conspire to get a holiday or business trip off to the worst possible start. The truth is, nobody likes the airport; it’s a necessary part in the process of getting from A to B. We’d all much rather be somewhere else. That is why airports around the world are racing to invigorate their atmosphere, reduce the stress factor and provide facilities that can help not only pass the time, but start your holidays as you mean to go on. One airport in Indonesia has taken the hospitality rush a step further, installing a mini cinema that can be enjoyed free of charge by passengers. Under the management of PT. Lombok airport closures due to Rinjani eruption Re-opened for business as usual August 1, 2016 – Due to the volcanic eruption of Mount Rinjani in Lombok, the local airport (Bandara International Lombok (LOP)) was forced to close for around 24 hours. This closure was a safety precaution due to ash and dust particles in the air making it potentially unsafe for passengers. August 2, 2016 – The airport re-opened at 08:00am local time, with flights operating to a normal schedule. The National Park remained temporarily closed, so the usual trekking access points of Senaru and Sembalun were not open to tourists. Safety of passengers remains the primary concern. The airport in Lombok continues to operate inbound and outbound flights as normal, with air quality and seismic activity continually being monitored to ensure the safety of passengers and the health of visitors to the island.

Rambu Solo Toraja In the Torajan language, Rambu Solo literally means smoke that is leading downwards. Rambu Solo Festival involves traditional ceremonies relating to death, in which residents of Toraja honour and transport the spirits of people who died to join with their ancestors. This ceremony is also often seen as confirmation of a person’s passing, as they have not officially died until the funeral rights of the festival have been fulfilled. If they have not been completed, the person who died is still considered as being sick and is treated like people who are still living. In traditional ceremonies at Rambu Solo Festival there are a variety of cultural attractions such as buffalo sacrifice (Mapasilaga Tedong). Water buffaloes chosen for sacrifice are not just any buffalo, but often special or sacred bulls and albino animals. The ceremonies are accompanied by the traditional music and dance of Toraja. Rambu Solo Festival is usually held from July to September.

Dieng Culture Festival Dieng Culture Festival is a cultural festival held annually in the tourism area of Dieng. This event was held for the first time in 2010. During this festival a unique dreadlock procession ceremony will be held. In the highlands of Dieng there is a phenomenon unique to the area, in which local children (anak bajang) naturally develop matted hair. Their dreadlocks are then cut in a ceremony to celebrate their passing into adulthood. Before the event, ritual prayers are conducted in some spiritual places such as Dwarawati, a temple in the Arjuna complex, Sendang Maerokoco, Gatotkaca temple, the great Balaikambang pool, Bima temple, Sikidang crater, the cave by the great colour pool and traditional Dieng burial sites. The following day there is a procession to the place for trimming the children’s hair. The Dieng community believe the children’s matted hair is from their ancestral leader Kyai Kolodete. They believe that the more the children’s hair becomes matted, so their lives will be more prosperous. Besides the dreadlock cutting ceremony, Dieng Culture Festival also features the attractions of art, culture, Wayang Kulit shadow puppet shows, traditional dance, fireworks and art exhibitions particular to the mountains or the region. The annual Dieng Culture Festival is held in August.

Erau Culture Festival Erau in the Kutai language (East Kalimantan) means crowded, downstream, homecoming, and joy. Erau was first implemented around the 14th century when Aji Batara (known as the god of the milky way) was appointed Raja Kutai when he was five years old. Community members rejoice and party for 40 days and 40 nights, playing in the land, rivers and shore of the local region. The Erau ceremony is celebrated to this day to commemorate the crowning of new Kutai Kings. Erau is one of the oldest cultures in Indonesia. One of the processions in the festival is the Beluluh, held in front of Kertanagara’s Kedaton Kasultanan. The purpose of the ceremony is to cleanse the Sultan of all elements of evil, through a process of sacred dance by the goddess and shaman. Besides the Beluhuh ceremony, the Erau Festival also features the Bapelas ceremony staged by the Sultanate. The Erau Culture Festival is held annually in August

Indonesian Independence Day On August 17th 1945, President Soekarno stood on the front steps of his house in Jakarta and, to a hastily assembled crowd of journalists, announced the independence of a nation, effective immediately. That was the moment Indonesia was born. Every year on the same date, Indonesia celebrates its independence and its inception. Everywhere there are red and white flags, games are played in the streets and a national holiday is declared. In the morning, kids decorate their bicycles with tinsel, tissue paper and trinkets, turning them into miniature floats for bike beauty pageants that will be held later in the day. Communities also come together to play games of football in the street, with men dressed in their wives’ clothing and the kids dressed in shower caps. The children also race on tracks drawn out on the road, where they also compete in Lomba Belut, collecting live eels in bottles against the clock. Perhaps the most famous and most ubiquitous event in the day’s festivities is Panjat Pinang, in which groups of local men pile themselves up into human pyramids in an attempt to reach prizes suspended at the tops of greasy wooden poles. There are fire-breathers, jugglers, street theatre and magic, along with parades and feasts all over the country. Indonesia comes to life with a real party atmosphere and everyone’s invited. This is a wonderful time to be in Indonesia, so throw on some red and white clothing and get involved!

Panorama Expansion Plans Indonesia targets 20 million tourists by 2019 Panorama set to expand ASEAN and European Markets
In response to the Indonesian government’s target to double the number of foreign arrivals to the archipelago within three years, Panorama Destination is set to expand its business to the ASEAN and European markets. In March 2016, the government introduced free 30-day visas for citizens of 169 countries, in an effort to stimulate interest and ease the passage of tourists into Indonesia. In response to the relaxed visa regulations for inbound tourism, Panorama has announced plans for expansion into markets in the UK, Czech Republic, Norway, Iceland, Finland, Sweden and Slovakia over the coming months. In an effort to reach new clients in the US, Europe and India, Panorama Group has recently acquired in-bound tour operator PT Buaya Travel Indonesia, in a move valued at R. 2.2 billion (US$169,000). Panorama has also forged new ties with agencies in Poland, and expects to welcome around 5,000 Polish nationals before March 2017, optimizing a brand new charter flight service from Warsaw. The change in visa legislation, along with the efforts of Panorama, has already seen a spike in the numbers of arrivals to Indonesia. Panorama has seen a 19.1 per cent increase in sales, with Rp 2.38 trillion made in the
first half of the year, thanks largely to the expansion in inbound travel. A total of 915,200 foreign travellers came to Indonesia in the month of May, with tourists from China and Australia accounting for the top two most common visitor groups. The most popular destination for foreign visitors remains Bali, with the majority of travellers flocking to the island for long weekend breaks. The Indonesian government has highlighted 10 additional locations that it believes hold the potential to emulate Bali’s popularity. Lake Toba, Labuan Bajo, Madalika, Mount Bromo, Morotai, Tanjung Lesung, Thousand Islands, Wakatobi, Belitung and Yogyakarta have all been identified as emerging places of interest that can offer tourists a unique and memorable experience in the archipelago. Through a combination of local knowledge and expertise, an extensive travel network and standardized service throughout the archipelago, Panorama is on course to meet the ambitious targets set out by the government, bringing the goal of 20 million foreign tourists by 2019 much closer to fruition.
