Ministry of Tourism to Develop Tourism Talent in Indonesia Republic Polytechnic Singapore creates new course for industry professionals

Indonesia’s Ministry of Tourism Singapore has joined forces with Republic Polytechnic of Singapore to develop the industry’s young talent. In a move designed to share best practices among government and industry partners throughout Indonesia’s tourism sector, the College recently announced its new 36-month ‘Hospitality & Tourism Capability Development Programme’. The course will draw together four national tourism institutions from across Indonesia and offer participants an in-depth guide to tourism in the archipelago, as well as an industry-relevant qualification. Indonesia’s tourism institutions will work together with Republic Polytechnic to address issues relating to Bandung, Makassar, Medan and Bali. Training components will focus on social media and branding, quality assurance and productivity management.

“RP prides itself on providing our students with a holistic learning experience and skilled and experienced faculties to facilitate their development into industry-ready professionals,” said Republic Polytechnic’s principal & CEO, Yeo Li Pheow. “We look forward to sharing our problem-based learning pedagogy and best practices with the national tourism institutions.” The programme will be co-funded by Indonesia’s Ministry of Tourism and Temasek Foundation. The Ministry has identified this project as a key investment for future growth and the creation of jobs in the sector. Dr HM Ahman Sya, Indonesia’s Deputy Minister for Tourism Institutional Development, expressed his hope that Indonesia will continue to develop “skilled talents who will contribute to our nation’s economy”. “We believe that today’s talents are the building blocks of our future success,” he added.

Republic Polytechnic (Abbreviation: RP) is a tertiary institution located in Singapore. It was the first school system in Singapore to use Problembased learning (PBL) pedagogy for all its diplomas. As an industry-oriented alternative to a broader based high school education, polytechnic graduates in Singapore are sought after for work or many continue to complete university degrees. In contrast to polytechnics in the United States and UK, polytechnics in Singapore admit the majority of their students after middle school (secondary school), which is after 10 years of formal education. Diplomas in a specialized area of study, for example Biomedical Science, are awarded after completing 3 years of studies.

Garuda Turns to International Market With New China Route Indonesia‘s national flag carrier Garuda Indonesia is ready to open a new flight route between the island of Bali and Chengdu (the provincial capital of Sichuan province in Southwest China) in order to cater to Chinese travelers going to Bali.

The new route has been launched in order to boost passenger growth by a target of 10 per cent yearon-year in 2016. Last year, Garuda Indonesia carried 19.4 million domestic passengers and 4.2 million international passengers.

Arif Wibowo, General Director of Garuda Indonesia, confirmed that this new international route would open in January 2017. He added that Chengdu has great potential in terms of boosting foreign tourist arrivals to Bali. Garuda Indonesia already flies passengers from Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou to Jakarta.

The airline also aims to open a new route to India in December 2016 as well as the United States in 2017. Domestically, Garuda is focusing on adding new routes in the eastern part of the archipelago.

Garuda Indonesia’s desire to add international flight routes in 2016 and 2017 is in sharp contrast to the company’s corporate strategies over the past two years, when amid challenging market conditions and its weak corporate earnings, the airline shelved plans to expand internationally and cut capacity to Australia and Japan. Instead the company increased its focus on the domestic market. Such restructuring proved successful as financial results improved markedly in 2015.

Garuda Flies Direct to Flores Indonesia’s flagship airline, Garuda Indonesia, has announced it will offer direct flights from Jakarta to Labuan Bajo in Flores, East Nusa Tenggara. Flores and the surrounding islands – including Komodo – have been growing steadily in popularity for several years amongst both international and domestic tourists.

CRJ1000 NextGen aircraft serves the route. All seats are economy class. Thanks to Garuda’s new flights, there’s never been a better time to check out Flores and East Nusa Tenggara.

Previously, the only barrier to more substantial growth in the region was the lack of infrastructure and the logistical challenges faced by visitors wishing to make the trip; the usual route to Labuan Bajo requires a stopover in Bali. This new direct route from Garuda offers travellers a more convenient and timesaving journey, connecting Indonesia’s capital with one of its most popular and remote tourism locations. The new flights depart Jakarta at 10:05am and arrive in Labuan Bajo at 13:35 every day of the week, except Saturdays. A 96-seater Bombardier

New Flights From Mumbai to Jakarta by Garuda Garuda Indonesia has announced that from December 12, 2016 the airline will officially open a new service from Mumbai to Jakarta (via Bangkok). This latest route from Indonesia’s biggest airline is indicative of their efforts to strengthen the Garuda Indonesia flight network and reach the ambitious government targets designed to increase tourist visits between the two countries. The service is scheduled to operate three times per week, using a fleet of Boeing 737-800s with a capacity of 156 seating (12 business class and 144 economy class). The city of Mumbai is an economic powerhouse and a centre of population growth in India, where an emerging middle class is becoming one of the world’s fastest growing tourism consumer markets. Mumbai had the highest GDP of any city in South Asia, West and Central in fiscal year 2016. Garuda’s Vice President of Corporate Communications, Benny S. Butarbutar said that the new Mumbai-Jakarta flight is expected to provide easier access for the many people in India who want to travel to Indonesia, particularly to Jakarta, Denpasar, Surabaya and Medan. „Now people in India can easily access the flights to Indonesia via Jakarta. We are confident the Jakarta - Mumbai flight opens a market for us with great potential, „added Benny. Indian tourists arrivals to Indonesia in 2015 reached 270,000 people. By the end of 2016 that number is set to reach 350,000. With the number of Indian tourists continuing to increase year on year, the sky is the limit for how many new arrivals can be expected via Garuda’s newest service.

It’s also a great chance to see the equipment and range of characters involved in this traditional theatrical art form. The others include Tumpek Kandang celebrated earlier in January, Tumpek Uduh for plants, Tumpek Landep for metal objects and tools, Tumpek Kuningan for ancestral spirits, and Tumpek Krulut for traditional gamelan music instruments – all of which occur in a 210-day cycle on the Pawukon calendar. If you’re in Bali at the end of December, this is an original, alternative and memorable way to see out the year.
