hello...
We’re all guilty of getting caught up in the frenzy of the festive season – especially as it’s the busiest time of the year for salons. But what if we all took a moment to think about those less fortunate in our local communities and further afield? What if we dedicated a bit of our precious time to help them? In this issue, we look at the heroes who have taken a step back and embarked on a series of inspiring initiatives that have really made a difference. From the salon in San Diego that donates a portion of its profits to local charities to the brands that are dedicated to helping those affected by illness, the ways to help are vast and the possibilities endless. When times are tough financially, it’s easy not to think of others. But there really is no greater reward than knowing you’ve helped someone in need. You won’t be able to financially quantify its value directly, but giving back is a priceless gift that everyone should put on their wish-list this Christmas.

Hollywood fashion secret
Sixty years ago, Elchim, first in Italy, introduced the professional hairdryer on the market, and opened up the door to the development of a set of tools designed specifically for hairdressers, to let them better satisfy their customers. Since its inception, the company worked hard to develop more and more technologically advanced products to support the hairdressers in their daily work. The new payoff “Healthy hair for your beauty” condenses in a few words all those years and years of research which allowed Elchim to
develop efficient and ergonomic products, designed in mind with both the health of the hairstylists and the beauty of the hair, from the styling stage onwards. “Healthy hair for your beauty” expresses the care and love for the beauty of hair, and at the same time, the global commitment of the company. The Elchim hair dryer, thanks to its ionic and ceramic systems, help to close the hair cuticles and moisturize them, to make them soft, shiny and silky, free from static electricity; and the reduced drying time, thanks to the
increased power of the hair dryer, leaves the hair healthier and more beautiful. In addition to being technologically advanced, the Elchim hairdryers are made in Italy - to be exact, in Milan, the city of fashion and design. Created by internationally renowned designers, Elchim products are well known and adopted throughout the world, where the company is present in more than 80,000 hair salons in 48 countries. It’s a good starting point for our further international development: the primary objective of Elchim for the future.

The news and know-how from your industry
Niall Colgan Hairdressing in Co. Limerick has been crowned Salon of the Year at the 2013 Schwarzkopf Professional Irish Hairdressing Business Awards. The event, which was attended by more than 450 industry professionals and held at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin, recognises business expertise and honours salons that excel in the creative side of the hairdressing industry. Niall Colgan and his team, who are based in the Limerick Strand Hotel, fended off competition from around the country including Leinster and Dublin Salon of the Year Brown Sugar, and Hype Hair from Waterford, which collected four awards on the day – the joint highest number alongside Yourells of Galway. Niall began his hairdressing career at the Hugh Campbell Hair Group and opened his busy salon in 2006 before the economic downturn. However, he has seen his business not only stay afloat but flourish into one of Limerick’s most busy salons. 09

Owner, Perceptions, Dublin I’ve always been a creative type. I was always into my appearance as a teenager – a bit of a poser – and when I thought I looked good, I felt more confident and wanted to help people feel the same. So that’s why I got into hairdressing.
VAT and TA X
VAT decision gains plaudits
Finance minister Michael Noonan’s move to retain the current reduced VAT rate at 9 per cent has been met with widespread approval in the industry. Prior to the budget announcement, it was reported that the reduced tax rate, which relates to the hairdressing industry, would return to its pre-2011 rate of 13.5 per cent. Welcoming the decision, Gerry Hynes, president of the Irish Hairdressers Federation, which lobbied More inside Will this decision aid against the re-introduction of a higher rate, said: “This is one small victory that will help stimulate business. In retaining the the fight against the black market? rate the government has acknowledged the important service hairdressing provides in growing the economy.” See page 16
you need to be able to make a total stranger trust you. Everyone has an issue with some part of the appearance, whether it’s their weight or a facial feature. Getting the client to communicate this to you is a skill.
Even though we clashed on so many levels, my mentor, Aidan Fitzgerald, taught me how to sculpt hair like no other. Each cut he does is done to perfection and he has a passion that is only found in a few.
A moment’s shame is a lifetime of gain. In other words, ask the question, no matter how stupid you think it may seem, because you can be sure there’s someone else who is afraid to ask it!

Fashion and football Sean Taaffe called upon fashionable Gaelic footballer Paul Galvin to open ST4Men, the latest salon to join his six-strong chain in Kerry. Speaking at the event, owner Sean said: “The reason we invited Paul is that through his own style he has made it okay for guys to care about the way they dress and to show that we can be as stylish as the ladies, any day of the week.” ST4Men is now open on Caption plese the Lewis Road in Killarney.

The Alternative Hair Show returned to the Royal Albert Hall in London with a creative team presentation from Peter Mark. The Irish super-chain was invited to fly the flag for Ireland and interpret the show’s theme; Enigma. Also representing Ireland were Aaron Healy, Joanne O’Neill and Teresa Molloy, who all made it to the International Visionary Award final. It was once a UKbased competition but now attracts entries from around the world, with this year’s winner being Misha Cadkova from the Czech Republic. The show managed to raise more than £181,000 (E212,000) for the Alternative Hair Charitable Foundation, which supports the Fighting Leukemia organisation. A select team of Cork’s most talented stylists worked backstage at this year’s Mercedes-Benz MSL Cork Fashion Week. Showcasing local designers and promoting young talent, the week-long event kicked off with Mercedes-Benz MSL Designer of the Year Awards and continued with a range of events across the city. Hair brand TIGI was the backstage sponsor and the team included PJ Foley from Vanity Hair, Audrey Cashman from Upstyle Junkie, Andrew Cronin from The Edge, Tommy Heffernan from Gorgeous and Siobhan Breen of Muse. Final
It was a glittering evening at London’s Roundhouse for the Wella Professionals TrendVision Award 2013 UK & Ireland Final. It began in style with the Sebastian Secret Sirkus show, before HOB Academy and D&J Ambrose shared a sneaky peek into the looks for TrendVision 2014 – A/W collection Borderline Beauty and the S/S Urban Native. Hosted by DJ Jo Whiley, entertainment came in the form of M People singer Heather Small, who belted out a stirring version of her London 2012 Olympics anthem Proud, and beatboxer Beardyman, who left the crowd open-mouthed at his vocal hip-hop gymnastics. Toni&Guy shared a colourful, trippy take on the ’60s with its Cult Candy show, before the winners of the night were revealed. Those Gold guardians for Ireland will go on to compete globally at Hairworld in Frankfurt next May. Viel Glück!

Translating the latest catwalk trends into wearable styles is no mean feat, but the Dublin leg of the L’Oréal Professionel Catwalk Showcase Ireland and UK tour did just that. Taking place at the Royal Hospital Kilmainham, more than 300 guests saw hosts and L’Oréal Professionnel Educators, Thomas Bennett and Siobhan O’Reilly, kickoff proceedings with a showcase of the inspiration behind the ‘IT Looks’ collection of three key colour trends for A/W13 – Silver Blonde, Rose Gold and Icy Brown. Then, the talented team of ID ARTISTS took to the stage in teams of three to showcase their interpretation of the looks. First-year Colour ID ARTISTS Mark Byrne of Sugar Cubed, Stephen Boyle of Davey Davey and Thomas Bennett demonstrated ombré techniques. Then second-year ID ARTISTS Marina Hayes from Foxy Chopper, Jennifer-Lil Buckley from Brown Sugar and Michael Corcoran from Peter Mark showcased the perfect bob, punk inspired plaits and a heavily fringed Debbie Harryinspired style. Finally Laura Reid, Tara Smartt and Thomas Bennett introduced Hair Chalk, which will be available in eight different shades from November.

It’s rare to be given an insight into the blood, sweat and tears that go into the opening of a new salon. But as husband and wife team John Cheese and Katherine Sweeney emotionally asked guests to raise their glasses and toast their new salon, Preen, it was obvious that turning their dream into a reality was a labour of love that couldn’t have been achieved without the support of their family. The guests, who included both John and Katherine’s parents (Katherine’s dad’s company was tasked with fitting out the salon), fashion photographer Barry McCall, jeweller Melissa Curry, illustrator Holly Shortall, TV3’s Sybil Mulcahy, and John and Katherine’s adorable daughter Alannah, were treated to delicious canapés by chef Johnnie Cook and a presentation of the five hairstyles that form part of the Preen hair and make-up Express Menu on Natalie B Coleman-clad models.

victory parade
It was a close call, but the final whistle has been blown, the scores have been totted up and the winners have been selected. Let us present the dream teams of Irish hairdressing – the winners of the Schwarzkopf Professional Irish Hairdressing Business Awards 2013 The worlds of hairdressing and rugby rarely collide, but at this year’s Schwarzkopf Professional Irish Hairdressing Business Awards, which took place in the awe-inspiring setting of the Aviva Stadium, they did just that. And although it might seem safe to assume that these two noble pursuits have little in common with each other, they actually have more similarities than you would think. Since its inception in 2003, the Schwarzkopf Professional Irish Hairdressing Business Awards have captured the imagination of the entire industry in Ireland and are unique in that anybody can enter – even nonSchwarzkopf Professional salons – which not only make the awards an even playing field but a highly competitive one, too. Michael Berggren, general manager of Schwarzkopf Professional for Ireland and the UK, started proceedings by taking to the stage to introduce this year’s theme – the fine line between success and failure. Then to really bring that message home, former Leinster and Ireland winger Shane
Creative Head Ireland
p24-27_Schwarz Promo_GW6.indd 3
Horgan and former Munster and Ireland hooker Frankie Sheahan came on for an insightful Q&A session. Led by questions from Frankie, a dapper Shane discussed how success and failure go hand in hand, no matter what kind of business you are in. He also injected some humour into proceedings with anecdotes about his own brushes with failure in the past, and how having the determination to continue striving for excellence is a skill that any winner in life must have. This meeting between two greats of Irish rugby and a room full of hair business experts took place in the President’s Suite at the stadium – a new venue to accommodate the biggest awards to date. And after the judges, guests and finalists that made up the 460-strong audience had enjoyed a delicious three-course lunch, they were ready for the main event. The sense of anticipation was palpable and the atmosphere electric as the awards ceremony began and the moment everyone had been waiting for arrived…

GIVING
Hairdressers are a generous bunch – mentoring, going green and raising money – so this christmas we celebrate the art of giving back
A little sacrifice When colleague and close friend Eugene O’Reilly passed away from cancer two years ago, Mark O’Keeffe and his staff at the Brown Sugar group decided to mark the first anniversary of his passing with their now annual Close to our Heart charity event. Held every May, the teams from both the South William Street and Blackrock salons offer their services for free so the money charged to clients goes straight to the charity. Their first event in 2012 managed to raise more than E20,000 for St. Francis Hospice, Raheny and this May they raised E10,000 for Down Syndrome Dublin.

He has described it as one of the most challenging yet rewarding experiences of his life, which is saying something when you hear how tough his early years were. But for Hairspray.ie owner Warren Logan, travelling to Cork city and Dungarvan in Co. Waterford for RTE’s The Secret Millionaire to seek out the unsung heroes keeping young people out of trouble, has been a life-changing experience. The businessman became involved with a group helping families that have been affected by suicide, a boxing club dedicated to keeping young boys off the streets and a community centre that encourages its members to rap about their frustrations rather than turn to violence or drugs. Logan donated more than E25,000 to the various charities and is now embarking on his own charitable crusade to help young people stay out of trouble by giving a series of talks in schools around the county, where he will reveal his own personal struggles and how a rocky start in life doesn’t have to define your future. Get in the pink
Everything goes rosy in October when Breast Cancer Awareness Month turns the world pink! There are a host of products that include donations in their retail price – Paul Mitchell and Aveda are but two – allowing clients to show their support. Perhaps most dedicated to this cause has been ghd, which this year celebrated a 10-year partnership with Breakthrough Breast Cancer. In total, an incredible £6.7m (E7.8m) has been raised in Ireland and the UK – and this will be boosted significantly by this year’s ghd V pink diamond styler set, and a recent salon competition that had a pink diamond worth £3,600 (E4,200) as the prize!

Giving back isn’t always about donating to charity, you can help people by saving the Earth, too. And for Aidan Fitzgerald, owner of Aidan Fitzgerald Hair Salon in Blackrock, Co. Dublin, the decision to use less and make his salon more energy-efficient is helping to do just that. The salon was awarded the Environmental Performance Award at the EnviroCom Awards for initiatives that resulted in saving 229,500 litres of water, 12,618KWh of electricity and 6,884kg of CO2. Measures the salon undertook included introducing Easydry towels, temperature-controlled water hoses and replacing lighting with low-energy LED fittings.
An education
The Sean Taaffe Academy by Aisling Madigan recently pioneered a trainee programme with a difference when they hosted a six week introduction to hairdressing course for 14 girls from the Down Syndrome Kerry branch. The course, which ran every Tuesday for two months, was free to attend and taught the trainees shampooing and blow-drying techniques, upstyling and what it’s like to work in a salon day-to-day. And Sean and his team have also been awarded the trophy for Social Responsibility at the Schwarzkopf Irish Hairdressing Business Awards 2013 for their innovative scheme. 33

G I V IN G
As Toni&Guy celebrates its 20th anniversary in Ireland and 50th birthday internationally, it decided to do more than just have a series of parties. To mark the occasion it also opted for a year-long programme of charitable events and, as the Irish Cancer Society is also celebrating its 50th birthday, the salon group chose to give the charity its support, along with the Jack and Jill Foundation. The first fundraising mission was the Hell&Back Challenge in February and since then various staff members have also staged a charity fashion show at the Dundrum Town Centre in Dublin, completed the Flora Women’s Mini Marathon and taken part in the Jack and Jill Kilkenny cycle.
The Shaping Futures team
It’s my party
Grab your passport For some, getting their hands dirty and seeing the difference they’ve made is the most rewarding way to give. Wella and Unicef have partnered to create Making Waves, which delivers life skills to young people to help them realise their potential. Elsewhere Teresa Connolly from Ritzy’s in Tullamore and Susan Hacket of Raven Hair and Beauty in Limerick, joined a team of eight volunteers in India to teach hairdressing skills as part of this year’s Schwarzkopf Professional Shaping Futures programme, which links up with the SoS Children’s Villages Charity.

Now it’s your turn… get giving with help from The Charities Aid Foundation Let staff choose Giving to charity can be a very personal experience, so hand the power to your staff when it comes to choosing one.
Make it fun The most successful fundraising campaigns always involve a bit of silliness. Think of fun ways to get your staff involved, excited, and preferably dressed up!
Think about different ways to help Giving isn’t just about money. Could you offer free haircuts or send your staff out to volunteer for a day? This is a great way to bring them face-to-face with the causes you’re supporting.
Reward their efforts There’s nothing like an incentive to get your staff engaged. Consider matching the money staff raise or awarding prizes to those who make outstanding efforts.
Help them help themselves The workplace is a great way to give. Sign up to a payroll scheme so staff can give directly and tax-efficiently through their salaries.

Blown away Every client wants hair looking fuller, which is why Diaboost by NIOXIN needs to be an essential addition to your salon’s Christmas blow-dry menu
A guaranteed fuller-looking head of hair in 30 days?* Is it a Christmas miracle? No, it’s Diaboost by NIOXIN! Diaboost enhances hair’s appearance from the very first use and is proven to increase the diameter of each existing hair strand, penetrate the hair to make it manageable and full, and strengthen hair’s resilience against breakage. It all sounds very good on paper, but how do you show your clients that it works? The best way is through a blow-dry. Diaboost is the perfect accompaniment to the pre-party blow-dry – and it’s something you can easily demonstrate how to use in the salon with results that will speak volumes. Whether clients fancy full, smooth volume or textured, towering tresses, simply treat their root area with 10 to 15 pumps of Diaboost, lightly massaging into the scalp and combing through, before carrying on with the blow-dry service as normal. During the blow-dry, be sure to explain to your client how Diaboost works. Once they see how easy it is to recreate the look and how fullerlooking their hair is, they’ll be begging you to let them take home a bottle of Diaboost for themselves!

THE BIG IDEA
UNITE
Salon a h t i w soul It’s a generous set-up. Luxury hairdressing brand UNITE has unveiled a state-of-the-art salon in its home town of San Diego that supports local animal and children’s charities, including the San Diego Center for Children. But this isn’t through the odd charity day or cake sale – UNITE donates all net proceeds from the salon. And, to ensure clients feel included in this sizeable act of generosity, they get to decide where their portion of the donations go. It means a simple hair appointment becomes an experience where everyone can feel they are making a difference in their community. And that’s not all. The salon is also an academy to train stylists in the latest techniques and to get salon owners up to speed on how to boost the their businesses. It truly is hairdressing with a heart.

Real-time revolution
Want to make empty column inches a thing of the past? Maximise walk-ins at off-peak times? Do you crave to be part of a trusted network of award-winning salons that share your passion for customer service? It’s time to meet WhatSalon You’ve probably answered yes to all the questions above. So what if we told you all these things and more are just the touch of a button away – and completely free to access? The brainchild of Irish entrepreneurs Kieran Walsh and David O’Flynn, WhatSalon is a new mobile app for iPhone and Android that allows people to make last minute, real-time hair and beauty appointments through their smart phones – the first and only service of its kind. Free to download and combining mobile geographic location data with real-time schedules, the app allows customers to book last-minute appointments and so helps salons fill empty column inches and offer an additional digital marketing avenue. WhatSalon is hoping to change the way you get bookings from clients. When a potential client makes a search and your salon is in range, their enquiry will appear on your handset as a notification. Simply swipe and accept – it’s as easy as that! And if you can’t see the client at the time they have requested, you can even offer them a time that suits you! Once you accept, it will be returned to the

client for booking. As soon as they make the booking, they pay 10 per cent up-front to secure the slot and it appears on your control panel with the final amount the customer will pay on arrival. WhatSalon has been built with the salon owner in mind and it’s here to make your job easier and to reduce staff downtime. You can also activate and deactivate discounts and create an online profile to give users as much information about your salon as you wish. There’s even a built-in job tracker to keep a receipt of all WhatSalon bookings and a support team that guarantees to respond within an hour to any queries you have. Based in Cork, WhatSalon also believes that the app will give salons that have previously relied on social media the ability to focus on an untapped target market. While Facebook and Twitter can only target existing followers, WhatSalon has the ability to introduce your salon to a vast new audience. And, crucially, you won’t need to invest in any expensive programmes to benefit from all it has to offer. Are you ready to be part of the real-time revolution? These salons are…

Who cares?
Angelo Seminara can’t bottle it up any longer – overproduction is killing the industry and the environment There are many great product manufacturers that can mass-produce innovative products and care for the world we live in at the same time. But all too often I see companies, brands or individuals capitalising on a trend and making products that are saturating an already crowded market. This overproduction of products really upsets me. I believe most manufacturers take responsibility for their place in the market, but it really bugs me to see those cashing in to launch a product without a care for the world. I have been in the hairdressing industry for many years and won many accolades. At one point it was fashionable to launch your 50
•50_Last word 1
own consumer product range after you won a big award, but where is the concern for the environment? Do stylists even know what’s in the products? My question to them is: ‘don’t you feel bad doing something just to make money?’ I blame it on the culture of celebrities and our obsession with all that it entails. Celebrity sells and now everyone has a perfume – Britney Spears, One Direction – even Kate Moss has one. Their names are so powerful that they can sell anything, even if it’s nothing to do with what they do! As a hairdresser passionate about people and products, I have always had a desire to launch my own product line, and have
been researching and testing over the past six years to develop something that will offer a point of difference. Since joining Davines I have been fortunate enough to assist in the development of its latest product line, More Inside. I love the whole process of developing products in the laboratory, working to create something different. It is all about sustainable beauty and getting an insight into how we can truly care for the planet. To me overproduction is unethical. It might never stop and the longterm effects really concern me. Angelo Seminara is artistic director of Davines
