hello... MEN ARE OFTEN overlooked when it comes to hair styling and grooming, so every now and then it’s nice to shift the focus on to the boys – from a super-cool barbershop makeover in Inside Story on page 20 to our male grooming special from page 48. Of course, it would be a little too ‘Narnia’ of us to have a winter issue without mention of Christmas – check out the gift sets to woo your clients with this season on page 44 and learn how to up your customer service during this hectic period on page 46. Then flick to our Scene pages and see if you can spot yourself or your colleagues – it has been a mammoth few weeks for industry events, with many more to come between now and 2015. See you in the New Year!

The news and know-how from your industry
Alternative Hair Show makes a splash Rossa Danagher of Rossano’s Hair Design and Beauty Salon in Sligo was one of the big winners at the Alternative Hair Show, bringing home the Visionary Award for Cut and Colour. Always one of the highlights of the year, the 2014 show didn’t disappoint. Not only were there 20 show teams on top form, from the blue theme of Sassoon to Paul Mitchell’s crutch-walkers and TIGI’s explosion of colour, the evening also raised 270,000 for Fighting Leukaemia, a charity set up by Tony and Maggie Rizzo. Held at the Royal Albert Hall in London, the show also saw Pawel Babicz, from Poland, taking home the Visionary Award for Avant Garde. Annie Humphreys was also honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award.

SALON SMART UNVEILS NEW SPEAKERS
MAKE SOME NOISE! IT WAS A CASE of three times the charm for NOISE as it made its third appearance in London in front of a sell-out crowd, following international success in Paris and Moscow. In typical NOISE style, attendees were kept guessing about the location until the very last minute as clues were steadily posted on social media revealing the guests, the top-secret location and the date. NOISE kicked off with a bang in
London’s Shoreditch with the super cool Kachette playing host to this year’s event. NOISE veteran Tim Hartley was joined by Australian Emiliano Vitale, the A Twins from Lithuania and NOISE regulars X-Presion, along with the Saco team, as they all took to the stage to showcase their techniques. Saco’s Richard Ashforth, NOISE founder, said: “It was an amazing opportunity to introduce some new faces and as always it was great to showcase eclectic styles.”
NEW DIRECTIONS WAYNE LLOYD HAIR is celebrating the release of its latest collection, Neo Geo. The looks are based on the use of geometry in cutting and colouring, and the team worked with photographer Kestutis Anuzis and make-up artist Mary Ginnifer to produce a selection of striking looks, with strong colour contrasts and sharp, almost architectural lines.
Joshua, India and Jason Miller (pictured), directors of the Charlie Miller salon group, are set to take to the Salon Smart stage to lift the lid on their brand. They join social media whizz Laura Caudery, Lee Stafford, Hooker & Young and Most Wanted Business Thinker 2014 Angelo Vallillo at the Creative HEAD business event. Visit creativeheadmag.com/events
AIPP WINNERS REVEALED D&J Ambrose was the big winner at the AIPP awards, with the salon winning Best Men’s, and Michael Francos winning Best Men’s Collection category. Other winners, announced at the Alternative Hair Show, included Chie Sato from Toni&Guy, who won Best Avant Garde.
We love a bit of multi-tasking and the label.m Hair Perfume is designed to nourish the hair and body with oodles of benefits. Alongside the Jean-Pierre Braganza tie-up, label.m is offering the chicest Christmas yet!

The amount women spend on looking good before they hit the age of 40, according to a study from Promotionalcodes.org.uk. The study found that most women between the ages of 18 and 40 spent 2,728 each year on products including shampoo, make-up and face creams and on treatments such as haircuts, waxing and manicures.
Berlin HOsts TIGI World Release 2014 TIGI’s World Release, dedicated to education and thrills, kicked off with a preview of the new Academy Collection 2015 and a showcase of the new Bed Head for Men range. Held at the Tempodrom in Berlin, the audience met a new global TIGI Inspirational Youth team and witnessed the hottest runway trends from Nick Irwin, Maria Kovacs, Marco Iafrate and Michele Grasso using Catwalk by TIGI. The fairytale-inspired show, TIGI Tales, followed, with models dressed in fantastic couture outfits, specially created by fashion stylist Jiv D.

The BUSINESS EDIT Opening hours
Always on call
Historically, hair salon opening hours have been dictated by tradition. We all remember our mothers telling us the hairdresser ‘doesn’t open on Mondays’. But hectic lifestyles and demanding client schedules have meant that today’s busy salons have had to adapt. One of the most widely publicised outside-hours stories is that of Blow, which has salons on Leeson Street and in the Four Seasons in Dublin. Owner Noelle McCarthy says that, at Blow, “we understand the demands of the modern customer – we only close on Christmas Day!” Blow opens from 7am to 7pm on weekdays, 9am to 6pm on Saturdays and from 10am to 4pm on Sundays – and the mornings, says Noelle, are “hugely busy”. It’s an opportunity being grabbed by Dylan Bradshaw, whose salon on Dublin’s South William Street has just launched the db EXPRESS service, a pre-work blow-dry that promises to take 30 minutes or less. Managing director Charlotte Bradshaw, says: “As a busy

Why did you want to be a hairdresser? I’ve always loved hairdressing and I couldn’t imagine doing anything else. I started an apprenticeship in House of Colour at the age of 17 and it was everything I expected it to be and more – it was fun, creative and inspiring. I’ve never looked back and can honestly say I love going to work every day.
working mum, I understand that time is precious. Our db EXPRESS service allows our clients to maintain their hair without it affecting their working day, so they can focus on the important stuff!” Clients pay 25 for the privilege – and rush away with a coffee in a smart, branded takeaway cup. “Uptake has been good,” says Bradshaw. “We’re simply responding to our clients’ needs.” It’s not just early birds that get the worm – at Bellissimo Hair and Beauty salon in Galway, bank holiday weekends are ripe for the taking. The salon is open from 10am to 5pm on bank holiday Mondays, attracting clients with bank holiday events they need to look their best for. It would seem that it’s no longer enough to offer haircare services during standard office hours – clients are looking for salons that will work around them, rather than the other way around. And, ultimately, if you’re not up to the task, they’ll look elsewhere.
What have been your career highlights so far? Most recently, winning Silver in the Wella TrendVision UK and Ireland final. I was also proud of my first photoshoot winning the L’Oréal Professionnel Next Generation award, and receiving a prize from Patrick Cameron for best long hair image at the Irish Hairdressing Photography Awards.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Still making people feel good about themselves, taking every opportunity that is given to me and passing on my knowledge to my students. I would like to be running the entire education academy in House of Colour by then. I hope I can inspire people as I have been inspired, you never stop learning.
What would be your dream hairdressing gig? To work with the hairdresser Robert Lobetta on a shoot. He is my ultimate icon, I love his unique style and how he’s a true master of his craft.

e d i s n I story Cut & Sew, Temple Bar
It may only be in its infancy but for proprietor Sean Bryan it was high time for Cut & Sew, the Dublin barbershop that started out as a pop-up in Temple Bar’s All City Records, to get a makeover. Sean worked with architect Ciara McGonigal to realise his vision – that of a classic ’50s barbershop with a contemporary twist. The result is sleek, with clean lines and eye-catching details – black, glossy metro tiles and stained wooden joinery exaggerate a dark wash area. The rest of the barbershop offers a total contrast – think flat, white metro tiles with black grout joints. A large counter-to-ceiling mirror spans one side of the space, with recessed rope lighting around its perimeter giving it a floating quality. The pipe that cuts along the main wall and across the space was highlighted by painting it a smooth, oxidised copper colour and adding copper fittings, a tone echoed in the pendant lights.

Life lessons Patrick Gildea Patrick Gildea Hairdressing, Donegal Always strive for excellence. The key to success is simple: create a vision, create a strategy and strive for excellence in everything you do, every day. We are consistently working together to improve our staff and client experience. We believe clients want more than just a fantastic cut and colour – they’re looking for an overall connection and experience. That’s what makes us different.
Be willing to learn and improve. The best hairdressers don’t walk around full of self-importance. Always be proud to portray a professional image, but never stop wanting to become more educated. Just because you are experienced doesn’t mean you have nothing new to learn. A continuous focus on your skills and knowledge ensures that you stay at the top of your game and are respected both inside and outside of the industry. We are lucky that our team has a hunger for selfimprovement – that’s why we continuously train all of our staff. We don’t want to just create hairdressers, we want to create the best hairdressers.
Surround yourself with a team of high quality, passionate professionals. We carefully choose who joins our team and, from experience, we’re convinced that starting someone from the beginning of their career is the way to deliver your vision. Once we have selected someone they embark on a skills and personal development training programme that – quite literally – never ends.
Love what you do and build strong relationships with your clients. I love my hairdressing career, it’s that simple! The sooner hairdressers start to realise how powerful the emotional connection with clients can be, the sooner they will see their client base grow. We have clients who have been coming to us for more than 25 years. These clients return not only because of the high service they receive, but also because of the relationships that we have built with them.
‘We listen because we care’ is a company philosophy we pride ourselves on and which assists us in delivering an unrivalled customer experience. Never take your regular clients for granted, no matter how well you know them. Never get complacent, their experience should always exceed their expectations.

In grooming terms, this means an attention to detail never before seen. “Guys are starting to take more pride in their appearance and seeing the value in looking and feeling their best – there is this antiquated notion that it’s manlier to not care about the way you look. Now more guys are starting to realise that when you look good, you feel good.” NICK IRWIN, TIGI global creative director
There has been a quiet revolution in male grooming – of the blink-andyou’ll-miss-it variety. Barbershops, far from being a once-monthly obligation greeted with a yawn and a long look at the watch, have become hangouts for on-trend males. Blame the hipster trend if you like – all big beards and moustaches, bespoke fades and old-school pomades – it’s resulted in a huge upsurge in the male salon market, thanks in no small part
to the 38 per cent of men who claim to use more personal products today than they did just three years ago. New male hair spaces draw on traditional masculine styles and pastimes, with services and products created to meet today’s high expectations. Which serves as a handy introduction to the new TIGI Bed Head for Men range, inspired by the original Bed Head icon: the Bed Head stick. At its 1996 launch, the Bed Head
stick started a revolution of its own, encouraging men to have more fun and spend less time on their hair. 20 years later, Bed Head has returned to its proverbial roots, focusing on the demands of today’s male – with streamlined, high-performance formulas and packaging with a fresh, masculine approach. These products are designed to give the on-trend man the tools to create style definition when and where he wants it.

And the finalists are… Ireland’s top talent has been chosen from the Wella TrendVision Award Heat – ready to compete at the UK & Ireland TrendVision Award Final The heat was on in the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel in Dublin as entrants took to the stage to compete for a place in the UK & Ireland finals of one of the industry’s most prestigious competitions, the Wella TrendVision Award. There were more than 900 entries to the UK & Ireland Heats, which makes victory all the better for the 12 Irish finalists who were chosen to continue on to the UK & Ireland TrendVision Award in London in two categories: Young Talent and Color. Each year, entrants are required to interpret one of two trends defined by Wella Professionals, this year saw the stylists put their own spin on either Urban Native or Borderline Beauty, to be judged by some of the most highly regarded industry types in Ireland and the UK, including Kai Wan from PKai Hair, Jamilla Paul of Jamilla Paul Hair & Beauty, Caroline Spencer of Sassoon Academy and Faye Turner of HOB Salons. The show featured a performance by the Wella Dancers from Big Chief Productions, along with presentations by Sanrizz, Sassoon Academy, Hair By Mane and a collaboration between the Wella Professionals Style Council and HOB Salons’ Sean Dawson on a Sebastian-inspired show. Of course, the real draw was the competitor parade, which was loudly supported by friends, family and colleagues.

THe hottest events every month – get yourself scene!
The Visionaries Wella Professionals pulled out all the stops at the UK & Ireland TrendVision Award Final 2014, hosting a total of 48 of Ireland and the UK’s most exciting stylists and colourists, while celebrating a decade of award-winning TrendVision creativity and talent. Held in the Roundhouse in London’s Camden Town and hosted by DJ Jo Whiley, the final exploded with a series of stunning hair shows, performed on a brilliant multilevel stage. The 800-strong audience enjoyed a stylish Couture Colour presentation from the Wella Professionals Colour Club; a brilliantly conceptual Hair Sushi #colourflash show by Toni&Guy using Instamatic by Color Touch; and, after a three-course dinner, a showcase of skills from Sean Dawson, Dom Capel and the Sebastian Cult Team in the Eclipse show. But it was the competition results that everyone had come to see, and so congratulations to Leandro Santana Santos and Brian Sweeney, who will now represent Ireland at the International TrendVision Award 2014 in Monaco in late November.

It was Doctor Samuel Johnson who said ‘when a man is tired of London, he is tired of life’, but it was Davines who took that saying to the heart of its World Wide Hair Tour 2014 as it stormed into London on a wave of excitement and enthusiasm. Hosted at the rather impressive Freemasons’ Hall, the tour began with Davines revealing the relaunch of its Essential Haircare line, in collaboration with the Slow Food Foundation in Italy to support biodiversity. The brand also unveiled its ‘I sustain beauty’ campaign, which aims to give everyone a platform where they can upload their versions of beauty. It was then Allilon’s chance to shine on its home turf, as Pedro Inchenko and Johnny Othona – the directors of ena salon – along with the Allilon artistic team revealed its Okafor collection, inspired by London illustrator, Kelvin Okafor. After a look back at the past 10 years of World Style Contest winners, the audience geared up for the big reveal of this year’s World Style Contestant, which went to a jubilant Anthony Polsinelli from Canada. Finally, Angelo Seminara finished the evening with a showcase of incredible cutting and styling skills.

When a hair show starts with a group shoulder rub, you know you must be at Aveda Master Jam. The pioneering green brand unveiled its global vision of trends and styles for the next 12 months and reminded us of its ongoing commitment to protecting and preserving the planet. The shows reflected this; Canada’s Ray Civello’s presentation, Sustainable Human, showed models wearing face masks against a backdrop of the beauty of nature, while Ricardo Dinis was inspired by Icelandic landscapes. Highlights included Jo McKay’s incredible colouring technique of splattering vivid shades over layers of crimped hair, and the reptilian shapes and snakeskin patterns showcased by Allen Ruiz. With an audience comprising 1,500 Aveda salon professionals from 22 countries, there was an emotional reception to a video tribute to Aveda founder Horst Rechelbacher, who died in February. But the mood was lifted with the announcement of Ilya Balkof from Krasnodar in Russia as the Fashionista 2014 winner.

The sun-dappled Barceló Punta Umbría Beach Resort in Spain had just started to wind down from another busy summer season when 2,000 hairdressers descended for the Matrix World Tour. With the theme ‘Destination Imagination’, this year’s tour encapsulated three days of creativity, education, inspiration and a splash of poolside partying. The opening ceremony included the Graffiti Nation show, illustrating the newest trends from the Matrix Artist Collective, which included the UK’s Jamie Stevens and Marcus Shamim. Education was presented in ‘playgrounds’ – attendees worked their way through colour, styling and cutting sessions with Jo Jordan, Paul Falltrick and Jamie among the educators. Two further spellbinding shows followed: first was Project Runway, a collaboration with Spanish designer Katarina Grey, with hair created by the Destination Imagination Dream Team. The finale show from Hooker & Young provided an operatic climax, ahead of a white party to round off the event.

The Wella Academy in Dublin was the location of House of Colour’s Hair Apprentice event, an annual competition that aims to seek out the next superstar of hairdressing. From 116 entries, 12 finalists were selected and then whittled down to nine, who competed for the winning prize of a nine-month City & Guilds hairdressing course worth a whopping E9,500. Over a six-week period, the nine finalists had to complete a series of tasks, mentored by top industry educators. One candidate left the group each week until the final four – Gavin McGuinness, Andrea Flynn, Kim Donohue and Katie Dunphy – were judged at a Grand Final by Wella Ireland technical manager, Sinead O’Sullivan, House of Colour’s Amy Reynolds and salon partner and multi award-winning hair stylist Liz Murphy. The 2014 winner? Gavin McGuinness. Congratulations!

The inaugural Schwarzkopf Professional Irish Hairdressing Business Awards event was held in 2003, with six categories and a handful of entries – but 2014 is set to be the biggest and best yet, with prizes to be doled out to a whopping 19 entrants across 9 categories. There are plenty of chances to get your hard work recognised, but that doesn’t mean it’s going to be easy! These awards aren’t about technical skills – although of course that’s going to feed into everything else you do, from social media sharing (no one wants to see badly inserted extensions) to customer service (how you respond to complaints) – so spend some time thinking about your application. How have you marked yourself out from your competitors in 2014? What social media strategies have you employed? What one thing has had the biggest impact on your business? Is it your exciting and engaging Twitter feed? Your lively Facebook page? Your arresting Instagram feed? Or is it the customer service training you invested in for all of your staff? Perhaps it’s the loyalty card you introduced, or the incentive scheme you created for staff? We know that running a busy hair salon isn’t just about cutting hair – that’s why the Schwarzkopf Professional Irish Hairdressing Business Awards are there to recognise and award the behind-thescenes work that can often go unnoticed.

CHRISTMAS
The look of love You need to show some love this holiday – learn how to dazzle clients and generate big profits at Christmas and into the New Year
Christmas is the busiest time of the year. Spirits are high and revenue is through the roof, but it can be a juggling act to keep client satisfaction at optimum levels in such a high-pressure period, not to mention coping with the quiet post-Christmas weeks as clients tighten their purse strings. However, with a business-savvy, service-minded approach, you can dazzle your clients and keep them coming back for more in the New Year. Discover our top tips on how to create a truly pleasurable salon experience this Christmas…
PREPARATION IS KEY Before the festive rush hits, sit staff down for a pep talk. Use it as an opportunity to ensure everyone is ready to impress clients and let your team voice any concerns.
EYE CANDY Promote your gift selection by displaying them at eye level so clients can see everything on offer. But most importantly,
46
p46_Customer Service_GW1.indd 1
let them try the products! Encourage staff to talk about your gift sets and offer to demonstrate party looks on clients.
LAP OF LUXURY All customers want to feel spoiled – so treat them! A host of savvy ideas can make them feel special and encourage rebooking, from luxury treatments to loyalty bonuses.
SERVICE, PLEASE Excellent customer service levels can slip during highpressure periods such as Christmas – not good if you want to encourage clients to return in the New Year. So step up your service and recruit extra help.
HAPPY NEW YEAR! With all of the extra clients coming through the doors, it’s an ideal time to promote services for next year. Ensure all of your staff know about January specials to tell their clients.

Men
Male grooming the untapped goldmine If you look back at the ’80s, the average guy would have gone to a regular hair salon – while it would’ve been your grandfather, or your baby brother, who went to the barbershop. But then in the ’90s, salons somehow lost that trade – where did it go? And how do we get it back? According to figures from P&G, men’s grooming and barbering is the fastest growing sector in the industry – and the largest category of that is in-salon consumption. The great thing about male customers is that they want to be advised on products and on styles. They’re also very loyal. If they’re happy with you, they won’t change, and that’s something that needs to be understood. Where did this new interest come from? Men are starting to feel the pressure that women have been feeling, thanks to the portrayal of men in the media, whether that’s in terms of advertising or celebrities. In general, guys are starting to
50
p48-50_Mens Feature_GW3.indd 4
understand that you can be well-groomed and still find that balance of masculinity. Irish men were always very fearful of looking overly groomed, of not looking masculine. For salons that want to attract that man back into their space – and they should – it will start with education. Educate your staff and gain those classic barbering skills to mix with your existing hairdressing skills. Men are in search of a better haircut and they’re willing to pay for it, as long as they’re getting what they want. Once they’re in the door, the environment is crucial. You need to make a gentleman feel comfortable and welcome. The consultation is also where you can try to relax them and figure out their lifestyle. Right now is a great opportunity to gain that customer. But let’s not lose those clients again – otherwise you’ll definitely be losing out.

Not YOUR AVERAGE collection… It’s easy to get carried away at Christmas. Everything is big and bold, from dresses that sparkle to hair that seems to get bigger with every blow-dry. This season, Sebastian Professional is stripping it all back with its Totemic collection, inspired by traditional customs and crafts worldwide. For clients who crave simplicity over sequins, Totemic is the collection for them.
Created by Sebastian Professional’s global artistic directors, Michael Polsinelli and Shay Dempsey, the collection features a host of bold new looks that draw upon a variety of cultures. But the collection would be nothing without the products behind it. The Sebastian Professional products the artistic directors used are: Mousse Forte,
step away from the glitter and embrace simple looks that don’t need any extras, with Sebastian Professional’s Totemic collection
for strong hold and definition, essential for reinventing Totemic looks back in the salon; Re-Shaper – when used with Mousse Forte it provides rough texture and firmness to hair for optimal hold and easy brushability; Craft Clay, for increased shine, definition and a more malleable surface when heated prior to and during application; and Thickefy Foam, for extra volume.

A change will do you good Change is at the forefront of any evolutionary process – and it’s a stylist’s responsibility to keep up, says Mark Doherty of SitStil in Dublin
Our amazing industry is enriched by constant change. We are, after all, a people business. Our product manufacturers and suppliers constantly improve and update the products we use – whether in terms of colours, styling tools, promotional imagery or haircare products. They do this because we expect them to, not just because we want them to. They force us, in turn, to change how we think – which is great! How boring would it be if we were still setting with Velcro or dare I say it, perming! Even the relatively new ghd straightener has evolved with the ghd curve. All of us involved in hairdressing as a craft understand what it takes to become a confident and professional individual. The availability of training in creative excellence, artistic colouring and precision cutting skills is what feeds us the passion we need to do what we do, both on the salon floor and on the stage. On the salon floor, we desperately need to convey this

passion to our everyday clients. It is absolutely essential in order for a young stylist to grow and for a salon to continue thriving. One of the main devices we use at SitStil to ensure continuing change is that we vow never to write ‘same again’ on a record card. We’re so adamant about this that, in fact, we don’t even keep record cards. This allows us to evolve a client’s colour and shape according to modern techniques and perceptions. Consequently, a client rarely gets the same result as the last time – why should they? With trust on our side, the subtle or not-so-subtle change enhances the ever-evolving relationship each member of staff has with his or her clients. Equally, when you have a stylist who has been instilled with this thought process, change is top of the suggestion list when it comes to new clients. Obviously, not all clients want a change (or at least they think they don’t). But if we don’t suggest it to them, we’re not doing our jobs properly. Mark Doherty is owner of SitStil salon in Dublin
