ALFAPARF CELEBRATES BEAUTY IN ALL FORMS ALFAPARF MILANO IS teaming up with Down Syndrome Ireland to launch a new employment programme for adults with Down syndrome. The Beauty In All Its Forms programme offers adults with the genetic disorder the opportunity to train as hairdressing assistants. With nearly 70 per cent of assistants in the four-month pilot scheme securing long term employment, the programme has now been rolled out in selected ALFAPARF Milano salons across Ireland. John Mulligan (pictured above, back row second left) from Kilmacow near Waterford gained employment following the pilot. He said: “The training was great. I learned lots – how to fold towels, cleaning and washing hair.” David Donnellan, managing director of ALFAPARF Milano, added: “Our objective is to make our customers look and feel more beautiful, every day. We recognise that beauty comes in many forms, and it is this promotion of diversity and inclusion that lies at the heart of this initiative.”

THE NEWS AND KNOW-HOW FROM YOUR INDUSTRY
Ireland takes gold at AHS CHRIS O’RIORDAN of Sean Taaffe Hair and Beauty has scooped the Mens’ International Visionary Award at the 2017 Alternative Hair Show in London. Now celebrating its 35th year, the charity event saw 20 teams from across the globe each present a three-minute show inspired by the theme ‘Utopia’. Ireland was represented by Hugh Campbell, who filled The Royal Albert Hall with his dark and beautiful vision. Throughout the night, hair appeared in every shade imaginable and was sculpted into gravity-defying, intricate shapes. This year’s event raised £280,626 (€312,357) for the Fighting Leukaemia Fund, a charity founded by Tony and Maggie Rizzo to help support children suffering from the condition. Other winners on the night included Lucian Busuioc of Romania, who took home the Cut & Colour award, while Jose Garcia Benitez of Spain was the Avant-Garde winner.
Every so often a tool comes along that promises to revolutionise how you style – and the BaByliss PRO Pefect Curl MKII will do just that. The auto-curl technology has three settings – for corkscrews, ringlets or loose waves – and ensures the best curl for your client at the touch of a button. You can also select the temperature to minimise heat damage and choose the direction of the curl. RRP €199

TASTE OF SUCCESS
CREATIVE HEAD UNITED its 2017 winners for the fabulous annual Most Wanted and It List Awards Winners’ Dinner. London’s Balthazar restaurant was the setting for a sparkling evening of conversation, discussion and celebration, peppered with plenty of reminiscing about September’s awesome Grand Final. Owners of Lloyds Hair and winners of the Most Wanted Supreme Team, Danielle Kennedy and Tony Heffernan, were our Irish representatives – unfortunately Exceptional Stylist Dylan Bradshaw had been grounded by storm Ophelia. Once dinner was done, Creative HEAD UK editor Amanda Nottage grabbed the opportunity to probe our winners on key industry issues. The liveliest debate centred around the sprawling topic of hairdressing and social media and there was plenty of insight from multiple award-winner Sophia Hilton, who discussed her campaign to balance both staff and her clientele’s expectations.

VAT RATE HOLD WILL BOOST HAIR SALONS THE DECISION to keep VAT rates at 9 per cent in the 2018 Budget has been welcomed by the Irish Hairdressing Federation. President Damien Nolan thanked those who campaigned for the rate to remain. Greg Koster, IHF executive committee member, said: “Holding the VAT rate is a key factor in helping restore competitiveness and a return to growth in the economy. Hairdressing is a highly skilled, labour-intensive industry with the ability to employ people quickly and provide them with skills and a career for life. Salon owners want to continue to see jobs in our industry being created across the country.”

LIFE LESSONS
SEAN TAAFFE SEAN TAAFFE SALONS Invest in the team. Money spent on education is never wasted. The more skilled the team is, the less stress the management will have. The happier the clients are and the more revenue coming in will also feed straight back into the professional satisfaction of the team – it’s a business virtue circle.
Discounting doesn’t work. It weakens your brand’s reputation. I prefer to add value and introduce new services such as treatments, products and beauty services.
Team bonding outside the salon makes all the difference. Days out of, or away from, the salon can improve morale and give valuable insight.
Delegate. One person can’t do everything and if they are doing it all then the chances are that they are not doing it right. People love to be a part of success, so involve them! It’s amazing what you can learn when people pool their ideas and concepts.

THE BUSINESS EDIT
NS WALK-IN SALE O LEAP?
WILL YOU TAKE TH THE TRADITIONAL APPOINTMENT salon isn’t disappearing anytime soon, but some salon owners have foregone the certainty of bookings and planning and opted for a more relaxed, open-door system. Once, walk-in policies were confined to barbers, but no longer. Hermans salon group operates three successful walk-in salons in Dublin. Owner Greg Koster believes that flexibility is key. “We have a large and loyal clientele that likes not having to commit to making an appointment; clients come at a time that suits them,” he explains. “Many find that even if there is a wait, it’s a shorter wait than they’ve experienced in salons where they did have an appointment. We never have noshows costing us money and we don’t have one client’s late arrival or change of mind about their service impact other customers throughout the day.” Danielle Kennedy, owner of Lloyds Hair and winner of the Most Wanted Supreme Team Award, has a walk-in salon and a traditional salon just three minutes apart. She believes that the greatest benefit of running a walk-in salon is that it brings something new to the market. “With a walk-in salon, we are able to offer our clients a totally different experience that sets us apart from our competitors,” she says. But Danielle has found that there are specific challenges that come with running a walk-in salon. “You need to do everything
better than your competitors – have better trained staff, offer a better client experience and better customer service,” she explains. “You must wow clients with every visit so that they are prepared to wait a few minutes every time they want to get their hair cut.” Greg believes that a tightly-run crew is crucial for a walk-in salon to succeed: “It requires a large team, probably more so than in an appointment-based salon, as we need to be able to cope with surges in clients. Sometimes we may feel overstaffed, but it’s needed to deliver when it is busy. You need good team spirit as everyone needs to be prepared to get stuck-in at peak times.” There is little room for error – get it wrong and you risk losing clients and money. “If you have too few staff, then your clients have to wait too long and won’t return. If you have too many staff and you lose too much money, the business isn’t sustainable,” says Danielle. And you may be surprised to see money going to more unusual places. “Managerial and front of house costs will always be higher than in an appointment salon, as the salon effectively stems from that area,” continues Danielle. “You pump a lot of money into these areas and you can’t see a tangible return on them every week like you can with booked stylists. It takes a lot of willpower to operate a 100 per cent walk-in salon and you have to be prepared to turn clients down on a daily basis.”

SHARING THE SECRETS OF SUCCESS TO HELP YOU ACHIEVE YOUR GOALS
SHINING BRIGHT SABRINA HILL, OWNER OF KOPPER HAIR SALON IN CORK, REVEALS HOW GREAT EDUCATION LEADS TO SUCCESS
STARTING OUT
“I got into hairdressing by accident,” says Sabrina Hill, owner of Kopper Hair Studio in Cork. “I was supposed to go and study fine art at college in Dublin. However, as part of our school curriculum I went on work experience at a local salon.” This placement changed everything. “I was absolutely horrified by what I saw. People were just being told they looked gorgeous and charged. I decided then that I had to change the world, one head at a time.” Art’s loss was hairdressing’s gain. Sabrina stayed on at the salon to build her skills, then was given opportunity to take over Kopper Hair in Cork. “I had only just qualified, and I started with just two other members of staff,” she says. “Then the recession hit and business wasn’t doing great. So, in 2009 I decided I had to invest in training.”
NEW OPPORTUNITIES
Sabrina retrained over the next few years, and gained an ALFAPARF Milano Masters Colour Degree. “This completely changed my view on hairdressing – ALFAPARF Milano training programmes are so good!” she says. “I thought I knew what I was doing before, but the courses gave me the
confidence to create fantastic colour and work better. You always get great results, and ALFAPARF Milano is amazing from the support point of view, too.” Sabrina’s expertise has gained her incredible recognition on social media – @superstylesabby has more than 18,100 followers on Instagram. She champions healthy hair and her pictures garner hundreds of likes as she shows off what is possible with ALFAPARF Milano.
LEADING THE WAY
Kopper is now a thriving salon – so much so that a second branch is on the way. “Kopper is a huge success, and education is important to us. We now have 16 members of staff, and many have completed their ALFAPARF Milano Colour Masters. Our staff often go abroad for courses – one of my juniors, Jenny Connolly, was chosen for the ALFAPARF Milano Architects of Design programme, and trains all over Europe.” Sabrina is a stylist who has carved out a niche without following the traditional expectations. “I am a hairdresser who doesn’t like competitions,” she reveals. “I would love to be known as someone who didn’t go down that route, but still changed the industry. We all need to find our own paths.”
FACT FILE ★ Sabrina Hill began hairdressing in 2000 while still at school ★ She took over Kopper Hair in Cork in 2005 leading a team of three ★ By 2007 Sabrina had completed the ALFAPARF Milano Colour Masters degree ★ She now leads a team of 16 ★ A second Kopper Hair salon is set to open in Cork City Centre

WHAT HAVE BEEN YOUR HIGHLIGHTS SO FAR? Attending Creative HEAD’s Most Wanted Awards with my boss Sarah Mason. I met so many world-famous hairdressers in the beautiful Guildhall – it was amazing. I’m also enjoying getting lots of education in the salon, including a day with global colourist Jayson Gray, the Karbon Kyd. WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN 10 YEARS? It’s a very long time when you’re still training! Right now I’m working hard to grasp everything I need to know to be a great stylist. I absolutely love colour – it’s an area I would like to specialise in. WHAT IS YOUR DREAM HAIRDRESSING GIG? My dream is that after competing in the Irish Wella TrendVision Award Heats, I make the trip to the UK & Ireland Final. I would love to see the trends revealed at International TrendVision – and then win it!

Inside story INSTYLE, MILLSTREET, CORK
Instyle turned 14 this year – so owner Triona O’Leary felt it was time to shake things up and give the salon a new look. She says: “I noticed a lot of successful salons are designed with luxury in mind – we all want to feel special when we treat ourselves to a new hairstyle.” She kept this ethos at the forefront of the design process and called in Gainfort Salon Design to guide her through the process. The result is an oasis from busy, everyday life, with chilled-out neutrals punctuated by zesty greens. “I decided on a striking yet minimalist colour scheme. I felt green would make us stand out.” The salon makeover has not only brightened up work for the team, but clients love the change, too. “I wanted to make each client feel special and, from what I have witnessed, I think we managed it,” she adds.

IT’S ONLY THE second year that Irish salons have entered Creative HEAD’s Most Wanted Awards, but they’ve already made their mark. This year, Lloyds Hair in Waterford was crowned Supreme Team in recognition of its incredible teamwork. And how long has it taken for Lloyds Hair to get there? Just four years. “My husband Tony and I bought a walk-in salon in Waterford four years ago. I had little experience in the industry – just six months as a salon manager, while Tony is a chartered accountant,” co-owner Danielle Kennedy explains. The prospect of running a salon with so little experience would seem daunting to most, but Danielle quickly realised she had made the right decision. “From the second I walked in the door, I fell in love with the industry and knew we could make an impact. The salon industry in our area was calling out to be re-shaped and I had a feeling that we could not only do it differently, we could also do it better than our competitors.” And Lloyds Hair has flourished – from one salon with eight members and a turnover of less than €200,000 – to three salons with a team of 56 and a turnover that’s on track for €1.4 million. So how has this been possible in such a short time? It’s all down to teamwork. “In the service industry, your people are your product – I use positive relationships and goal-setting to ensure my team is always engaged,” she says. “Success means a happy team that is passionate about Lloyds and their careers. We are not a ‘just a job’ salon. Every team member knows why they’re there and what their goals are. Everyone plays an equally important part in our success and they are all shining examples leading the way in the Irish hairdressing industry.” Communication is key for such a fast-paced salon, but Danielle makes sure it’s never too serious. Before each
ALL
WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO BECOME THE MOST shift the team has the Lloyds Lowdown – an informal fiveminute meeting. Then there are pizza meetings every two or three months with no agenda – they are simply a chance for team members to say what they’re thinking. There is also plenty of fun to be had as part of the Lloyds Hair team – and the Mystery Day Out is the highlight of the year. “It’s like planning a wedding,” jokes Danielle. “Nobody knows anything about the day except Tony and me – how often do you, as an adult, get a day that’s a total surprise?”

STAR CAST
WANTED SUPREME TEAM? FOR 2017 WINNER, LLOYDS HAIR, IT’S ALL ABOUT PASSION, PIZZA AND TEAM PLAYERS This year the team hopped on the mystery bus and went to build rafts to race. After team awards – where two employees won a trip to New York and the runner-up won a Sophia Hilton course – the fun really started with a DJ and free bar! “We don’t do bonuses,” she adds. “It would be easier to just hand out cheques but that’s not us and not the business we want to be.” Since opening, Lloyds Hair has raised more than €10,000 for Waterford Breast Cancer Support Group, which has provided the perfect opportunity for the team to bond as they
help others. “We open on the Sunday of the October Bank Holiday weekend,” says Danielle. “The team works for free, doing blow-drys and up-styling in return for donations. They take funny pictures and videos to put on Facebook. “It has such a positive impact on the salon every year as it brings us all together and everyone is so determined to raise as much money as possible. They say it feels like Christmas Eve!” The emphasis on fun shines through the Lloyds Hair social media channels, which have grown and grown. “The team has been the driving force behind the social media success, as we realised that it’s the salon and the personalities that our followers love,” Danielle admits. “We are currently the second most followed and liked salon page in the country.” So, what does it mean to win at the most exciting industry awards, with its Supreme Team trophy at Most Wanted 2017? “There are lots of awards out there, but they’re usually either individual stylist awards or business awards,” says Danielle. “This is the most important award that we’ve ever gone for – it’s for the team members. This is their award and I couldn’t be more proud of them.”

#PartyPeople
WHAT’S ON THE MENU? ONE WORD: PLAN. If you haven’t done so already, brainstorm with your team on how you can boost revenue over the Christmas period. “Being able to accommodate our clients over this busy time is integral to the service we offer,” explains Donna McConville, manager at Davey Davey in Dublin. “We understand the working week can become very busy for a lot of our clients so we endeavour to adapt to this by extending our opening hours and offering Sunday openings during December so we can ensure hair is absolutely perfect for this special time of year.” Blow-dry menus geared to party looks, conditioning treatments and quick hair-ups and clip-in hair pieces can transform locks in a flash and are great for time-short clients – Great Lengths offer a fantastic range including pieces with pops of colour. And with all the craziness of Christmas, it’s a great time to offer a little luxury with some ‘me time’ options. “I have put together two new packages for the festive period – Party Prep and Pamper Package – either for the client to use or buy as a voucher to give as a present,” says Claire O Sullivan, owner of Claire’s Salon in Co. Cork. “We are confident clients will leave feeling rejuvenated.” “In the salon, clients can expect mince pies, chocolate treats and a specially selected Christmas playlist to get them in the festive mood,” says Kara McDonagh, general manager at Sean Taaffe Hair & Beauty in Co. Kerry. One more word: budget. Always have a marketing budget in mind for Christmas and the New Year. Business consultant Alice Kirby of Lockhart Meyer Marketing recommends adding 10 per cent extra, for any unforseen costs.
GET SOCIAL!
You can never be too busy for soci al media nowadays – but you’ve got to make sure every post counts. Either block out some time to write and sche dule your content in advance, or take the spontaneous route. Why not let your imagination run wild with 12 day s of Christmas posts, showing off festive looks and perf ect gift ideas? And don’t forget to dress up you r Facebook page with lots of photos of you r salon decked out in its festive finery!

YOU’VE MADE YOUR CLIENT HAPPY… IS THE TEAM SMILING, TOO? JUGGLING A BUSY salon floor with full styling columns and personal commitments can take its toll. Christmas is notorious for raising stress levels, and while the focus is rightly on pampering your clients, it’s important to remember the wellbeing of your staff too. Organise activities to support your team emotionally, physically and financially. Lots of salons offer yoga sessions – whether in-salon or at a local gym – to help with focus and energy. At Davey Davey, it’s all about getting active: “During November we spend each Sunday doing an activity together – this year we are going indoor climbing. We get to support each other and have a good laugh at the same time – it really brings us all together and creates a positive vibe for the busy months ahead,” says Donna McConville. And never underestimate the power of a little healthy competition. Kara McDonagh explains: “We play pass the parcel, where the parcel is a product to sell in return for a day off after the Christmas party. There’s also bingo, where each team member gets a number with every sale they make to be in with a chance of winning vouchers.” Donna agrees: “At Davey Davey, team members receive points for products and treatments sold throughout November and December. Depending on points earned, each team member receives a gift voucher for their chosen favourite shop or restaurant – and the overall winner receives a special bonus prize, too!” And remember to host a Christmas party and arrange reasonable time off for everyone, too.

#PartyPeople Help every client’s hair shine bright with a range of seven Christmas giftsets from JOICO.
IT’S A SHOP-PORTUNITY! DID YOU KNOW that 70 per cent of all hair electrical sales in salons occur during November and December? Stocking your shelves with all the right items is a commercial must for Christmas, as well as making the most of your product suppliers’ promotions. With added-value freebies, beautifully packaged gift sets and luxurious gift-wrapping, you can build a show-stopping shopping destination. “Create an in-store brand experience that will entice shoppers to your salon during the busiest time of the year and prevent them from buying all their Christmas gifts online,” urges the team at Salon Success. “From the welcome greeting, consultation and service to the professional recommendation and gift service you provide, everything should be geared towards making that purchase simple. Shoppers love buying luxuries that come boxed and bagged or gift-wrapped to take home, so create a department store atmosphere and take the hassle out of wrapping for your guests.” Tempt clients into spontaneous purchases with clever retail displays, visual merchandising and tactical selling. Set out “try me” tester products around the salon; create message-enhancing displays along the client’s journey and don’t forget that trial-sized products at reception make great stocking-filler impulse buys. Incentivise the team. Look at your sales from this time last year and aim to increase this by 10 per cent, says salon business consultant Carey Faulkner from Boostmysalon.co.uk. Once you have your goal, break it down into more manageable goals – in most cases it can mean just one more product sold per stylist per day. Here’s some festive retail inspiration…

Showstopper THE HOTTEST TALENT in hairdressing flocked to the legendary Roundhouse in Camden, London, for the Wella Professionals TrendVision Award 2017 UK & Ireland Final. Hairdresser Patrick Cameron was joined by DJ Lauren Laverne to host a night of extraordinary hair and celebrations. Fashion-forward Toni&Guy opened the show with Prismatic, a bright and on-trend collection that meshed colour with couture. After dinner and plenty of wine, the show continued with Equal from Sassoon Academy. This fusion of hair and art celebrated individual style, with incredible cuts and colours. Sebastian Professional presented the third and final show of the evening, E-Vokative. Celebrating four decades of creativity, this atmospheric show was accompanied by a live performance from singer-songwriter of the moment, Charlotte OC. Then it was time to get down to the business of awards. Competitors showed off their hard work on the runway, and waited eagerly to find out who would be representing Ireland at the Wella Professionals International TrendVision Award Final.
