THE NEWS AND KNOW-HOW FROM YOUR INDUSTRY

SALON VAT SET TO JUMP 50% VALUE ADDED TAX (VAT) is set to increase from 9 per cent to 13.5 per cent in the tourism and hospitality sector in January. It’s expected that this 50 per cent rise, along with the minimum wage increase of 2.62 per cent to €9.80 an hour for an experienced adult employee in January 2019, will have a massive impact on salons. Finance minister Paschal Donohoe announced the tax hike in his Budget speech last month, stating the increase was necessary in order to raise €466m for the government to ‘reprioritise’ funds for housing, education and childcare. Danielle Kennedy, owner of Lloyds Hair salons and winner of the 2018 Most Wanted Supreme Team award, recommends making a plan of action for your business. She explained: “As salon owners we must make sure we are fully covering ourselves for the increased costs we will have. Work out exactly what your increased charge will be per service with the VAT increase. Only you can decide what is best for your business, but there’s no point in waiting until January to figure all this out. You need to do it now and put a plan in place with your team.”

GOLDWELL AND KMS LAUNCH INTO IRELAND GLOBAL HAIR BRANDS Goldwell and KMS have launched into the Irish market at an event at Black Amber salon in Dublin. The brands’ parent company, Kao Salon Division, has signed an exclusive partnership with newly established Irish distributor, Trinity Salon Partners. The deal will connect Irish salons with the brands, enabling access to cutting-edge education, world-class events and innovative products. The Black Amber salon group in Dublin will be the first in Ireland to join the Kao Salon Division portfolio and will stock Goldwell Colour, Care and Style ranges. Terry McGovern, founder of Trinity Salon Partners, said: “As we are the exclusive agent representing Kao Salon Division brands in Ireland, we fall under the zero-rating intra-EU supplies agreement. So, any salons who are VAT registered will not pay VAT on Goldwell and KMS products bought through us.”

PETER MARK HONOURS EMPLOYEE LOYALTY

THE PETER MARK Long Service Awards has celebrated 120 employees who have been with the salon group for more than a decade. Employees from salons across Ireland met at the Westin Hotel in Dublin to mark those loyal long term to the business. Peter O’Rourke, chief executive of Peter Mark, said: “We are proud to say that we have so many talented stylists and support staff who have worked with us for 10 years or more, something which is almost unheard in hairdressing. As a brand working in this industry for 58 years, we know how important is to attract and retain the best talent. It is the lifeblood of our company.”

#MWIT winners feast

Danielle Kennedy and Tony Heffernan of Lloyds Hair and Dylan Bradshaw were among this year’s Most Wanted and The It List Awards winners who gathered at a dinner party in their honour at HIX ART gallery in London. The setting provided the perfect canvas for an evening of conversation and celebration, with guests reliving their joy from their big night at the 2018 Grand Final, sharing stories and discussing future endeavours. After 44 years in the industry, Most Wanted Hair Trend winner Kevin Kahan, summed up the feeling in the room: “If I live another life, I’d choose the same path and be proud to say I’m a hairdresser.”

Mystique sets tone at the Alternative Hair Show 2018 ALESSANDRO BARCA FROM Toni&Guy’s London Academy has won the Men’s Visionary Award at the 36th Alternative Hair Show. The awards – sponsored by TIGI and presented by international president of Alternative Hair, Anthony Mascolo, together with founder Tony Rizzo – also saw Japan’s Ryu Kyougoku (Cut and Colour) and Taiwan’s Tang Wei (Avant-garde) take home prizes. The show, this year entitled Mystique and sponsored by TIGI and Wella, included presentations from salons from Spain, Italy, Germany, Hungary, China, and the US. Marc Antoni, Alan Edwards, Guy Kremer, Mark Leeson, Robert Masciave, Saco, Sanrizz, Sassoon and the TIGI UK Creative Team were just some of the big names onstage. On the night, £205,000 (€232,000) was raised for Fighting Leukaemia.

THE FIX

Check out this ravishing russet by Callum O’Donovan from The Edge Hair Design in Cork. To recreate the look in your salon, follow these steps: Step 1: Apply Majirel 6.46 and Smartbond globally to hair. Step 2: Use Blond Studio Multi-Tech and 20Vol with Smartbond to create bleed on the heavy side of the bob, gradually getting lower. Step 3: Tone with 7.43 and 7.44 Majirel Rouge before going back and breaking up the root colour. Step 4: Blow-dry then break up the bleed using 6.46 Majirel to create a multi-tonal look that appears to be a single colour.

RETAIL REHAB With just six ingredients, Infinium Pure hairspray is hypoallergenic and fragrance-free – yet can still deliver three levels of hold without stiffness.

With more and more women visiting salons, there’s a fantastic opportunity to grow your business and nurture a loyal client. Christmas is the perfect time to get your consultations spot on, since women are entering your salon for vital ‘me time’ more than ever. You need to ensure their experience is personalised to them. So, the question is, how can we make them feel more at home? A key part is the greeting as soon as they walk in – a smile is

lovely, but you need to make them feel like this is the place they want to be. Retail expert Mary Portas knows the value of a great stylist in a consumer’s life. “Many people have shared so much with their hairdresser, so greet them like a friend,” she says. “It’s the little remembered details and warm welcome that counts.” Your business will see the difference if you do, and your clients will be thrilled by the experience in your chair.

CONSULTATIONS

DO THIS NOW

Want to know how to wow your guests? Create a bespoke experience. Customers will value your expertise, and there is truly nothing like a one-on-one consultation. You have digital tools at your fingertips that are bound to impress them, while also inspiring them with ideas on new colours to try – take a look at the Style My Hair app and have a little fun. You can also use it to determine the hair’s condition to determine if a treatment is needed and prescribe a homecare regime – your colour bar is a chance to showcase what makes you different! Remember to also bring colour mixing front and centre to leave clients more appreciative of how they get that gorgeous colour.

Serenity Salon, Hastings UK

SULTATIONS N O C R U O Y F O L O R TAKE CONT

1)Make sure you have an assigned area, away from the usual hustle and bustle of the salon, where you can devote time to your client’s colour consultation. 2)At the styling station, use two chairs to conduct a face-toface consultation – don’t chat through the mirror! 3)Show service menus and colour charts to reinforce your expertise. 4)Use a tablet during the consultation to help clients visualise key looks on a selfie.

LIFE

WHY DID YOU WANT TO BE A HAIRDRESSER? I always loved playing around with hair when I was growing up, especially braiding! I have a passion for creativity and studied art in school. I feel styling comes naturally to me – it’s something I really enjoy. My first ever hairdressing job was in the salon my sister Ciara worked in – she is also a hairdresser and inspired me to start a career in this industry.

Create your own opportunities. Whatever direction you want to take, connect with your peers. If you want to work on shoots, contact photographers and make-up artists to create a team so that you can build your portfolios together.

Be ever-evolving. As an educator, I am constantly growing and evolving my skills to ensure I can teach my students to the highest standard. Being a part of a creative environment means I never go a day without learning something new.

Welcome criticism. When someone gives you feedback, whether it be praise or a critique, use it constructively because we learn more from things that don’t go to plan. Be a team player. You’re always stronger as part of a team. Remember to respect and give a helping hand to whoever may need it, because no matter what their level you can learn something from them and create an environment that is motivating to work in. 16

AGE: 24 HESSION HAIRDRESSING

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR HIGHLIGHT SO FAR? There have been so many, including being selected for the L’Oréal ID Artist team! I was also in the final of the L’Oréal Colour Trophy 2017 competition. This year I was nominated for the ‘Most Creative Talent in Hair’ category at the Image Awards. And of course, working in Hessions is a highlight for me – I’ve learnt a lot and I’m still learning. WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN 10 YEARS? New York City! It’s my favourite place and I definitely hope to be living and working there! I’d also love to travel and work with top photographers and magazines, gaining experience from all around the world. WHAT IS YOUR DREAM HAIRDRESSING GIG? Working backstage at New York Fashion Week is my dream gig for sure! I’d also love to style David Beckham’s hair.

THE BIG IDEA

GHD ORACLE

Once in a while, a tool comes along that changes hairdressing forever – something ghd has a little experience of. Now, with new professional curling tool Oracle, ghd has done it again. A variety of different curls can be achieved by simply running the tool over sections of hair at different speeds and angles – no twisting or turning by you required. “The Oracle is the culmination of many years of research,” says Steve Elstein, ghd vicepresident of product development and research. “Hair passes through the unique U shape while the curl zone cools the hair and sets it in place for a long-lasting finish.” And, in an exciting move, the ghd Oracle is being trialled first in Ireland, exclusively in Peter Mark salons. Anthony Strianese, ghd managing director for the UK and Ireland adds: “We are excited to be working with Peter Mark, a key salon partner and an integral part of the launch process.” CREATIVE HEAD IRELAND

Inside story OI ORGANIC ITALIAN HAIRDRESSING DALKEY, CO. DUBLIN

When Ivana Margarini and Francesco Piccolo arrived in Ireland from Italy they found their dream salon location in Dalkey, Co. Dublin – and the all-natural OI Organic destination was born. “The interior design was inspired by nature, as this is the primary source with which we work,” they explain. “Everything in our salon has a history, from great-grandfather’s carpentry worktable to the wall decorated by an Italian artist who came over especially to create it. We worked with architect Felice Bevilacqua from Sicily, who has previously worked with Versace.” Treatments in the salon use only organic materials such as plant essences, herbs, flowers, clays, algae and oils, and this dedication to wellbeing is reflected everywhere you look. It’s a space that makes you feel good, both inside and out.

OFFERING GIFT CARDS

Christmas is the perfect time to issue gift cards. Here’s how MINDBODY can make them work for you…

GENERATE REVENUE IN ADVANCE

Gift cards are a great additional source of revenue and immediately improve cash flow. They also feel really natural at this time of year, as clients seek out the perfect gift for friends and family.

ENCOURAGE LOYALTY

Think about offering gift cards as part of a package to create a greater perceived value. Clients using gift cards are also more likely to visit more than once to deplete their card, providing opportunities to encourage loyalty – and to upsell.

BOOST BRAND EXPOSURE

Gift cards are a cost-effective form of advertising, because every time a client opens their purse they see your card and are reminded of you.

CONVENIENCE

With MINDBODY you can offer gift cards online that can be customised with brand-specific messages and photos, so even last-minute shoppers can be targeted.

DATA, DATA, DATA

You can also monitor sales by pulling a gift card report on MINDBODY, so you can measure exactly how much impact they have had on business. IN ASSOCIATION WITH

WHEN AN ESTIMATED 80 per cent of the hairdressing workforce is female, it’s understandable that the pressures of family life will have an impact on business. Whether it’s women trying to get back into work after maternity leave, or juggling childcare hours, salon shift patterns can be both a blessing and a curse. Is the industry overlooking a vital source of talent – and will clients remain loyal when their trusted hairdresser is unavailable for a long period of time? Bridget Haren is in the perfect position to understand the challenges faced by mothers working in the salon. “Breaking the good news to my long-standing clients about my arrival, due January 2019, was exciting and nerve-wracking,” she explains. “I knew they’d all be delighted for me, but I wanted them to be able to feel comfortable about my absence as well.” In order to keep clients coming into the salon during her time off, Bridget created a pairing system. “I recognised that having a plan in place would keep my clients at ease with the transition,” she says. “I have matched each client with a stylist in the salon and have included their new stylist in consultations over the past few months. “As their final pre-baby appointment with me is approaching, each client has received their new stylist’s business card and we have encouraged pre-booking their first appointment with them before my maternity leave begins.” With these plans made, Bridget avoids unnecessary stress, and knows that her team have everything under control.

“While I will never entirely turn off from the business, I have the structure in place with my salon manager to allow me the flexibility to be at home with my new family,” she says. “I’m confident that my clients and the business are both in good hands with my team.” More and more salons are offering late and early morning slots to clients, which can be to a working parent’s advantage, as are offers to split hours across multiple days. It requires careful juggling and time management, but that’s nothing that effective communication and up-to-date software can’t handle. “We are aware hairdressing consists of long days on your feet, and we work with our staff to ensure we are completely flexible with their hours,” explains Rosemary Danagher, owner and creative director at Rossano’s in Sligo. “Some of them will require shorter days and more time between appointments, while some prefer not to do the late shifts.” And in an industry where retaining staff is of utmost importance, it is a savvy business decision to hold onto your valued team members and support them if they choose to start a family. Rosemary continues: “Pregnancy is a lifealtering experience which is physically and mentally demanding, so we help our staff to strike the work/life balance and ensure their health and wellbeing is always looked after. "Talent is talent and we will always be there for our staff – should that mean they can only commit to one day a week, they are still going to be a vital part of the team.”

COMPLETE COLOUR KIT WANT TO ACHIEVE YOUR COLOUR DREAMS? ALFAPARF MILANO HAS EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO MAKE YOUR VISIONS A REALITY…

IT’S NO SECRET that this is the era of colour. “It’s having a moment,” says Paul Stafford, owner of Paul Stafford in Belfast and ALFAPARF Milano global brand ambassador. Over the past few years the influence of Instagram has been felt. “People are becoming more conservative about their cuts – they want a change while still retaining their length, and this is when they turn to colour.” “A big game-changer was the bleached grey trend, which made its way out of the backstreets of London and Berlin and captured the imagination of the public,” Paul continues. “It indicates an element of freedom in choosing to have grey hair, and gives the option to move into metallic coppers and rose golds.” Now colour is more exciting than ever, Paul chooses ALFAPARF Milano colours to achieve his unique vision, most recently in his new collection. “My most recent collection was inspired by ’90s New York club culture,” he reveals. “ALFAPARF Milano Revolution Neon colours enabled us to create bright colours and adapt them in a modern way – great colour palettes give you the freedom to do this.” And he shares his wisdom regularly at Xpert ACCADEMIA in Dublin. “I’m at the Xpert ACCADEMIA about three times a month and most of my staff have ALFAPARF Milano Colour Master degrees,” he explains. “I can hardly keep up with the rate of

learning. I’ve spent time at the ALFAPARF Milano headquarters in Italy – it’s a technical, creative lab, and what they do there is mindblowing. To be involved at that level with the brand is an honour and privilege.” This emphasis on training, collaboration and high quality products means that ALFAPARF Milano is Paul Stafford’s brand of choice. “There is a willingness to listen to hairdressers and take on board what they say,” he reveals. “The brand has a great respect for the environment, animal welfare and client safety. Today’s clients know exactly how they want to be treated, so we need to arm our colourists with the best information, education and products to deliver this.”

BEYOND THE

EXPECTED… THE WELLA TRENDVISION AWARD IGNITES CAREERS AND CREATIVITY

IF YOU WANT to challenge yourself and hone your skills as a hairdresser all the while setting new trends, then the Wella TrendVision Award is the competition for you. Hairdressers can test their skills by competing in one of two international categories, either Creative Vision or Color Vision, and the UK & Ireland category of Male Grooming. The 2018 Irish heat was held at the Intercontinental Hotel in Dublin, and was hosted by TV and social media star James Kavanagh. The evening showcased the inspirational Mentors Show, from award winning hairdressing icons including Leonardo

Rizzo from Sanrizz, Charlie Taylor from Charlie Taylor Hairdressing and the Irish mentor, Darren Lacken from Crow Street Collective. The Wella Professionals Style Council collaborated with Leonardo Rizzo and Sharon Cox from Sanrizz to present an eclectic EIMI-inspired show. Finally, on the night the Irish finalists were announced and are listed below. This year the entries were judged by industry leaders from the UK and Ireland such as Andrew Dunne from Hair by Mane, Jayson Gray from Karbon Kyd, Niamh O’Connor from Callan & Co and Gareth Vance from Sassoon.

Keep staff shining Christmas is all about spending time with your nearest and dearest, but it is also one of the busiest periods in the salon. To avoid any ill will over the festive season, it’s worth making work a little bit special for your staff. After all, Christmas cheer is infectious. “We need to keep the atmosphere upbeat, what with all the busy days,” says Kara O’Shea, general manager at Sean Taaffe salon group. “We do Christmas jumper days both for fun and for charity, and we all wear what we want on Christmas Eve. The girls create a playlist of cheesy music, we do bakeoffs and there are plenty of chocolate treats. Kara continues: “And there’s the Sean Taaffe Christmas bingo! When you sell a product you get to pick a number. Then if yours gets picked out you win a prize!” And make sure that your staff get a chance to party properly, too. “Our team sacrifice a lot during the busy season, committing to extra hours and longer shifts to accommodate all the clients’ needs. So they look forward to letting their hair down at the staff party,” says Rosemary Danagher, owner and managing director of Rossano’s Hair and Beauty group. “Each salon participates in a Secret Santa and it gives the team a good giggle.”

XMASIre.indd 2

Stocking up the shelves Don’t forget that Christmas is the best time for retail – so make sure your shelves are stocked with gift ideas. “Planning for the festive season starts early with the arrival of our gift sets as we start to plant the seed early and encourage our clients to start shopping by offering a payment plan for earlybird shoppers,” says Rosemary Danagher. “We love that Redken and Kérastase have bespoke gift sets.” “Christmas is a great time to boost your retail and make a good return on investment, particularly with in-demand gifts like ghd,” explains Charlotte Mensah, ghd creative artist and owner of the Hair Lounge Salon in London. “The gift sets are something that people really want, particularly with limited editions that always makes for an excellent selling point.” And your expertise can help make that sale. “A good way to encourage clients to invest in gifts and tools is to showcase your knowledge and ghd’s,” continues Charlotte. “Tell them about the looks that are trending – using the ghd Queens as a consulting tool – and how they can recreate those looks using the same tools hairstylists use. The tech is a great selling point for ghd, too; it allows you to step up your hair game without compromising hair’s condition.”

The run-up to Christmas is a great time to reward your customers with special promotions or incentives. “Why not offer them a one-off free Christmas beauty package as a thank you? You could offer a full look for the evening including a wash, cut, blow-dry and styling,” suggests Jo Martin, marketing director at Sally Europe. “Remember, salon offers not only attract customers but also encourage return visits.” Styling menus are also a great way to entice consumers who are going from desk to dancefloor – let them relax, maybe with a glass of fizz or a sweet treat, while you do the hard work using the new ghd platinum+. The ghd Queens styling menu is an ultraglamorous way to get the party started, and there’s a look for everyone. Clients can pick from the powerful and sleek Girl Boss Queen, the glossy Queen of the Castle, the Have it All Queen with her silky lengths and the Urban Queen’s super-modern waves. And, of course, those services are going to feel extra special if you get the setting right. “Our staff get in the swing of things and are very enthusiastic about Christmas décor, working hard like Santa’s elves to make the place look festive, warm and welcoming,” explains Rosemary of Rossano’s Hair and Beauty group. “We offer our clients treats and it’s the little touches that add to the experience and make them feel good when they leave the salon. You have to set the right atmosphere and make it an extraspecial visit to the salon, and that excitement comes naturally from our team, who love what they do. She continues: “Forward-planning helps to fit everyone in – once October starts we encourage our clients to book in for their Christmas events as well as their regular appointments and services.” And before they leave the salon, ensure you’ve done all you can to shine a spotlight on your Santa skills. “Customers want to touch, smell and browse at their leisure,” reminds Sally Europe’s Jo. “They’ll never ask you to sell them a product, so don’t hide your prize assets behind reception. Instead, place your retail display in the waiting area or by the point of sale.”

TO KEEP A CAREER TICKING OVER YOU NEED REGULAR PIT STOPS AND TUNE-UPS. IT’S TIME TO PUT SOME FRESH IDEAS IN THE TANK AND FIND THE RIGHT EDUCATION – YOUR SALON NEEDS AN…

BEING UP-TO-DATE on the latest techniques is one of the most straightforward ways to drive business to your salon. Obvious… isn’t it? But how do you know what courses will deliver real results? What indicators promise a return on your original investment, making it worth paying out in the first place? Investing in the right course takes some thought and there are more options than ever. Whether it’s a specific technique you want to add to your repertoire, a brand you want to bring in, or a healthy refresh to make sure your mind – and scissors – are still sharp, there’s something for everyone…

36

EducationIre.indd 1

BRING IT IN

When facing a team-wide upgrade, it’s easiest to have an educator come to you, and increasingly brands offer this as standard. David Campbell, founder of House of Colour and president of the Irish Hairdressers Federation, runs business seminars to help managers get the most out of their salon. With the Directors Box seminar, he travels to salons for a meeting to diagnose salon problems. David will then give personalised advice on streamlining the business, motivating the team and working together to achieve specific goals. Who better to learn from? If you can’t get to its amazing new space in Buckingham Gate in London, Sassoon Academy will send educators direct to you. “Sassoon Direct is going from strength to strength as more of our clients demand a high level of personalised education within their own space,” explains general manager Leona Curran. This demand has seen the rise of specialists who can parachute in, such as men’s grooming range The Bluebeard’s Revenge, which has even seen demand for its Shave Day training service surge in salons looking to diversify their skills as well as barber shops. TIGI Education has a menu of courses that its instructors bring to your door, including cutting, colouring and consultation skills.

PLUGGED IN

Having access to education at the touch of a button is another change to the sector that has really taken off recently. “The world is moving faster than before and we all lead busy lives, so many can’t always find the time to attend courses,” explains Hairdressing Live founder Paul Davey, co-owner of Davey Davey. “With Hairdressing Live you get the chance to see some inspirational stylists showcase their work in an hour-long class, which you can watch from the comfort of your own salon, home or even on the move.” And what’s better is that you get the chance to pause, stop, rewind and re-watch the classes whenever you want. Hairdressing Live has seen a 81 per cent increase in views since this year, in keeping with this overall trend for immediacy. “Other industries are using live streams a lot; fashion designers are streaming their shows live, technology

CREATIVE HEAD IRELAND

EducationIre.indd 2

companies are releasing new products live. We do not want our industry to be left behind,” says Paul Davey. “Constant education is the key to success and progression in your career. We should always strive to become better, no matter what level we are at. The more we share with one another and learn from one another, the better the industry becomes.” With so many stylists on social media, some providers are looking at those platforms to deliver unique and engaging education content, that can also happen in real time. L’Oréal Professionnel has an online digital learning platform called Access and has hosted Facebook Live sessions with Adam Reed to dive into trends after London Fashion Week, while Redken has also started offering webinars on Facebook. TIGI’s upcoming online platform, Fuse, will include step-by-steps and inspiration from the TIGI International Creative Team. And with the advent of Instagram TV and the growth of YouTube, such content is only going to grow more widely available.

You might be confident with your cutting and colouring skills, but including more in your salon’s curriculum can create a real point of difference. It might be that you want to introduce a particular colour technique from an expert in the field, or perhaps you’re looking to boost your business knowledge. “Education is vital to the success of both the individual stylist and the salon in our industry, as both benefit creatively and commercially, says David Donnellan, managing director of Xpert Professional Haircare. “But, in today’s world, it’s important not just to educate on hairstyling. At the Xpert ACCADEMIA and training centres we focus also on personal development, management skills, customer service, retail education, general business acumen and social media.” ACCADEMIA offers fullyfitted salons, make-up and beauty training rooms, lecture theatres and meeting spaces. For those starting out in their careers, the Robert Chambers Academy can help you get on the fast-track to the salon floor and earning money as a stylist. L’Oréal Professionnel and Wella Professionals have regular guest artists at their academies in Dublin. Above all, learning effective communication skills is essential. “Stylists must be able to communicate effectively and confidently and they must listen to their clients in order to fulfil their clients’ expectations,” explains David. “A correct consultation will result in the right style, colour and aftercare service and repeat business.”

THERE WAS A NOTICEABLE spring in Wella’s TrendVision Award step this year – competitors’ clothes styling was more streetwear-inspired, the colour and cuts served with lashings of edge. Big Brother and The Voice’s Emma Willis was a pitch-perfect host at London’s Roundhouse, keeping the energy levels high throughout the night. Robert Eaton and the Russell Eaton Art Team amazed with their Colour ME+ show, a celebration of diversity that felt bang on-trend. Coty stable mate ghd put on a closely choreographed presentation celebrating its Long Live the Queens campaign (cue wind machine!), while HOB Salons and Academy celebrated 35 years in business with a rollicking show soundtracked by New Order classic Blue Monday. Of course, the climax of the evening was the reveal of all the Irish and UK victors. The Gold winners now travel to Lisbon for the International TrendVision Award 2018 Creative Retreat with other national winners, and mentors including Bruce Masefield, Jayson Gray and 2018 Most Wanted Creative Talent, Zoë Irwin.
