hello...
They say necessity is the mother of invention, and if the economic challenges we’ve all faced in the past few years have taught us anything, it’s that in order to survive you have to be adaptable but if you really want to see your business thrive, you have to be innovative. From a hair extensions special to a feature on how to make, how to save and how to spend cash, this month we’re looking at the small yet significant ways you can boost your profits and keep your clients coming back to your salon. Change can be positive if you embrace it in a positive way – and it doesn’t have to cost the earth. So this New Year it’s time to re-assess, make some resolutions and reap the rewards. Are you ready?

It was an action-packed night full of excitement, tears of joy and disappointment, tension and lots of laughter, and it held more than a few surprises. The IHF Star Team 2013 Grand Final in Dublin’s Radisson Blu Royal Hotel on Golden Lane was a resounding success, with Teresa Conroy from Salon 2 in Sligo, Kelly Young from Occasions Hairdressing in Kildare, Nikkita Purdey from House of Colour in Dublin and Michelle McLoughlin of LIA Hairdressing in Leitrim being named as the winners of this year’s competition. As part of their prize, the four girls will enjoy a year-long education programme, take part in photoshoots, work backstage at catwalk shows and attend hair events both nationally and internationally. The IHF and mentor Olive TuckerLee from House of Colour will be on-hand to nurture and develop their skills throughout the year. But the celebrations didn’t just end with the Star Team. Duncan Kenna from Occasions Hairdressing was awarded the IHF All Star Award, Adele Robinson from Company Hair Cutters in Belfast received the IHF Salon Ambassador Award, Aaron Healy from Wayne Lloyd Hair and Beauty in Cork was presented with an IHF Hall of Leaders Award and IHF secretary Pauline O’Carroll was presented with an Icon Award by IHF president Gerry Hynes for her dedication to the IHF during her 20-year career with the industry body.

It’s all go for Goldin Katie-Jane GoldIN, managing director of Great Lengths Ireland, was recently awarded the Image magazine Young Businesswoman of the Year Award at the annual Image Businesswoman Awards, held in Dublin’s five-star Marker Hotel. Now in its seventh year, the awards aim to recognise inspirational Irish women who shine in the business world, regardless of economic climate or the challenges they face. Speaking about her award, KatieJane said: “I am absolutely delighted to have won this award. My brother David started Great Lengths in 1991 and today it is in more than 60 countries and 37,000 salons worldwide, as well as 112 salons in Ireland. To win such a prestigious award and to be standing there amongst such inspirational women is such an honour.”
Psst…
We love L’Oréal Professionel’s Hair Chalks range – a temporary hair colourant that lasts up to three washes. Available in eight shades – Sweet Sixteen Pink, First Date Violet, Blue Ocean Cruise, Garden Party, Coral Sunset, Coffee Break, Bronze Beach and Black Tie – the chalks cost E18, are available from salons and can be painted onto dry, clean hair. Manager, Alan Keville for Hair Wexford and Alfaparf Milano educator I have always had a flair for art and fashion. Hairdressing has proved to be the perfect career to combine these interests.
I have never ignored any advice given to me – I always welcome it! The best advice I have received was to stay confident, keep learning and always stay true to yourself. My advice to anyone starting out is to think fast, know your trade well and go with your gut instinct.
There are so many skills that a hairdresser needs. The most important are to have good communication skills, welcome lifelong learning and remain confident.
The industry is facing many challenges at the moment… but the key to success is to maintain excellent standards and outstanding customer service. Consistency is vital.

Life
Keeping it in the family Darcy’s Hairdressing in Cork recently celebrated 35 years in business by unveiling a new state-of-the-art salon on Paul Street in the city centre. More than E300,000 was invested in the expansion and refurbishment project and the new salon is now double its original size, with the addition of two floors in the adjoining building to increase the floor space to 2,000 sq ft. Owner Darcy O’Neill’s son Frank has returned to Ireland to work with the Creative Team, marking the start of an exciting new era for the salon. Frank moved to London in 2006 to join the Vidal Sassoon Academy before moving onto Toni&Guy, where he assisted co-founder Toni Mascolo, before working with London salon Pimps and Pin-Ups, where he was senior creative stylist.
Internal affairs Team Whitewater, aka Debbie Gallagher and Sarah Bell from Peter Mark Whitewater in Newbridge, have been crowned the winners of Peter Mark’s first ever Colour Trophy. Taking place at the Double Tree Hilton in Dublin, the event was presented by the ever-stylish Brendan Courtney. Dozens of finalists from the hairdressing group competed in front of hundreds of guests and a judging panel which included international salon stylist Guy Kremer, make-up artist Derrick Carberry, and current L’Oréal Colour Trophy holder and Peter Mark educator, Nadine Quinn.

House of Colour celebrates trends The academy in Dublin has played host to the annual House of Colour Trendsetter Awards. Sixty House of Colour assistants competed to be crowned the winner in each of their sections – Foundation, Graduate and Excellence. Ciara Fox from House of Colour Times Building took home the top prize in the Graduate category; Pamela Hughes from House of Colour Charlestown clinched the Excellence award, while Jolene Byrne from the House of Colour Academy impressed the judges with her vibrant red and pink creation to nab the Foundation category.
Judging the competition was House of Colour creative director, Darren Lacken; owner of Velvet Beauty chain, Catherine Campbell; Wella national educator, Cleo McCormack; Wella Style Council member, Amy Bejaoui; House of Colour senior stylist, Tonya Foley; Generation Now winner, Brian Sweeney; and Elaine Carey, House of Colour Academy educator. Proceeds on the night went to Temple Street Children’s Hospital, before the House of Colour Dream Team signed off with an amazing hair show to end proceedings – but not the party!

WhatSalon has launched the second version of its innovative appointments app. New features include a payment process where clients won’t have to enter their credit card details every time they want to book an appointment. Using card.io technology, clients will simply hold their smartphone up to the card and it will automatically scan the numbers for them, making the app even more easy and efficient to use.
We will be showcasing our latest bridal hairstyles at local wedding fairs that are taking place throughout January and we’ll also be continuing our 20th Year in Business celebrations with special offers in the salon and by doing lots of charitable fundraising events.

Based on the principles of colour therapy and using a palette of powder pink, peppermint and primrose, All Dolled Up in Cork is like a doll’s house come to life. But this salon, featuring key fixtures by leading brand Salon Ambience, isn’t style over substance. The aromatherapy spa backwash area is based on a five-star hotel in Koh Samui in Thailand that owner Cliona O’Hanlon stayed in, and has been designed with total relaxation and escape in mind. Similarly, the opulent textures and fabrics used throughout give the space a luxurious feel. We particularly love how fantasy meets reality when it comes to afternoon tea at the salon. Scene Hair by Hester Wernert
THe hottest events every month – get yourself scene!
Open invitation East London’s Truman Brewery was converted into Wella’s Open House to reveal the company’s plans for 2014, in a morning filled with surprises. To an audience of international press, Wella revealed not only exciting new launches for its brands but a totally new approach to its muchloved TrendVision competition. With creative directors Josh Wood and Eugene Souleiman on hand to reference the work they created for the Fashion Week catwalks, this dynamic duo revealed the breathtaking editorial looks for TrendVision’s two seasonal collections – Urban Native and Borderline Beauty. Guests then moved next door to an incredibly evocative set to see the haute couture looks on the catwalk from global artists Hester Wernert from the Netherlands and Russia’s Dimitry Vinokurov in a spellbinding show. Truly a new dawn for TrendVision, and for Wella.

Corkonians always claim that the rebel county is the true capital, and as some of the best of the business descended on the Silver Spring Moran Hotel, there was no doubt that it was the hairdressing capital of Ireland – for one night at least! Now in its fourth year and with nine awards up for grabs, the Alfaparf Fantastic Hairdresser Awards gives stylists and salons an opportunity to show off their creative expertise, and this year saw the introduction of a new trophy – the Inixia Photographic Award. Super stylist and one half of the Lennon Courtney brand, Brendan Courtney took to the stage to cohost the event with founder of The Fantastic Hairdresser Company, Alan Austin-Smith. We then saw styles inspired by the Roaring ’20s, coloured by this year’s Alfaparf Master Degree graduates and styled by Ger Hand and Alan Keville, Alfaparf’s technical manager and producer of the awards show, respectively. The Master Degree graduates were followed by Alan Keville’s A/W looks – a combination of Art Deco meets ’90s, before Intercoiffure Ireland presented its Rúnda collection, meaning ‘secret’ in Irish. And then it was time to announce the winners…

company Despite a successful TV career and a host of celebrity clientele, Andrew Barton is famed for his straight talking, nononsense approach and his passion for transforming ‘real women’. And a packed-out audience got to experience his insights on the topic first hand, when he hosted an evening at The Royal Hibernian Academy. Joined on stage by his salon creative team, Tracey Gallagher and AJ Blackadder, the trio presented a live demonstration of cutting, colouring and styling techniques, assisted by the team from Kazumi Hair Salon. Based on the themes of ‘girly grunge’ and ‘graphic design’ Andrew, Tracey and AJ all spoke about the importance of keeping styles wearable and encouraged the audience to forget about concepts and focus on the person sitting in the chair instead – something that is easily forgotten when it comes to more creative styles. Finally, seven graduates from the Redken Color Certification Course were called up on stage to receive their awards before the evening ended with a standing ovation from a very lively crowd!

money
Free ca$h Good, we’ve got your attention. Here’s our free, definitive guide to money – how to spend it, how to save it and, most importantly, how to make it! Business booster

Real return
“Smoothing is the service with the most consistent wow factor,” stresses Jez Barnett, manging director at KeraStraight. “It delivers three or four times a year, while you might only have a drastic cut or colour once or twice a year.” And with no patch testing required, add-on services such as KeraStraight’s Intense Boost treatment can be done there and then, and offers a fantastic return on investment for a salon. The unit cost to the salon is E1.20, while the price for clients is usually E30, before the addition of a blow-dry.
22
p22-24_Money Feature_GW3.indd 2
The salon’s getting steamy and it’s making money! A collaboration between L’Oréal Professionnel and Rowenta Salon, the Steampod is a clever little gadget that offers shiny and smooth hair to clients, while delivering a profit-boosting added extra to blow-dry appointments. It’s a perfect way to get junior team members to build their confidence and their column, and with an at-home version on sale in the salon (see the Limited Edition Pink Diamond below), the Steampod can ratchet up your retail. It’s getting hot in here…
▲
Prescription for profit
A new generation of straightening and smoothing products can support an efficient and budget conscious approach to this everpopular service. The BTX treatment offers an exclusive in-salon service, which gives the hair a complete makeover in 45 minutes. It also allows stylists to offer give expert advice to build a longterm client relationship which will keep repeat customers coming back every six weeks. Karen Fraher, owner of The Hive on Dublin George’s Street, says that before and after images of clients who’ve had the treatment have been a great way to illustrate how beneficial it is to the hair.

How to $AVE it We asked some of the best in the business for their budgeting tips, tricks and hints to saving money and cutting costs
Buy in bulk
“By using a recognised wholesale distributor you’ll be guaranteed your products are coming from a reputable company and that you’re getting the best deals, rewards and value. You’ll also have a personal relationship with your account manager, meaning a trusted industry expert is always at your disposal.” Paul Moloney, Essential Salon Services
Waste not!
“We’ve replaced the laundering of own towels with Easydry Towels, which are 100 per cent disposable, we’ve replaced the washbasins with temperature-controlled water hoses that save on water and electricity and all our lighting is now low-energy LED fittings.” Aidan Fitzgerald, Aidan Fitzgerald
Assess decisions
“Hiring a PR company is often better value and more effective than launching an expensive advertising campaign. With an advertising campaign you’re often limited to an eye-catching image and a couple of lines to describe your entire business. But with a good PR campaign you can include lots more visuals and information about all aspects of your salon such as the stylists, the salon team, the products and the salon experience. It creates brand awareness and provides a strong controlled image of your business.” Lynn Hunter, Hunter Communications
Save on staff
“The margins in salons are not big and it’s essential that as an owner you have a grasp on where revenue is going. The largest percentage of salon revenue is employee costs and this can easily get out of control. The number one lesson is to know the numbers in your business!” Anthony Whitaker, growmysalonbusiness.com
Tackle technology
“Apps such as the WhatSalon app help give salons the opportunity to fill slots in their timetable left empty by last-minute cancellations and noshows. The beauty of it is that it costs the salon nothing and they receive 90 per cent of the treatment price from the client – we keep 10 per cent as a booking fee.” Kieran Walsh, WhatSalon

How to make it
two fruitful salons share their successes to help you hit the jackpot Darcy’s Hair Design, Cork Seeing a gap in the market to offer premium styling services at affordable prices, awardwinning Darcy’s Hair Design in Cork chose to open a walk-in blow-dry bar at its Ballincollig premises. Since then it has added a walk-in upstyling and treatment bar to the service menu. The salon used its prime position in the town centre to its advantage and launched a marketing campaign around the centre by targeting shoppers and used highly visible signage in their window to displayed the price – E15 – and it’s paid off. Since the blow-dry bar launched, the salon has seen a huge increase in its client retention rate, with 65 per cent of blow-dry bar clients opting to book in for an additional service, something manager Mary Jeffries believes is down to making the salon more accessible for new customers. “We are a five-star salon and found that lots of people presumed we were too exclusive, but by offering a value for money service, we’ve enticed them into the salon. They don’t have that fear factor that we’re too expensive and so become loyal customers.” And with zero investment needed to get the blow-dry, up-do and treatment bars off the ground, all revenue generated has been pure profit.
Preen, Dame Street, Dublin
As a new business it can be hard for salon owners to pinpoint and assess which elements are working best and bringing in new clients. But for Katherine Sweeney, salon director of Preen in Dublin, the launch of its Express Menu has undoubtedly been one of the most important decisions the salon has made. “We don’t have comparative year on year figures yet, but we’ve had a steady increase in business month on month since we opened our doors in the summer.” November, Preen’s third month of trading, saw an increase in turnover of 50 per cent on the previous month and the Express Menu has been so popular that it has contributed to an increase in client spend in other areas of the salon, such as HD Brows. The brainchild of salon owner Katherine, the illustrated Express Menu offers the client six up-styles or blow-drys to choose from, along with make-up application done by the salon’s resident make-up artist, Kim O’Sullivan, for E60. Demand over the Christmas period has meant that the salon has had to take on extra staff for the New Year.

If you look closely at any successful salon you’ll see that along with make-up services and nail and eyebrow bars, hair extensions are at the core of its business model. And you’ll also realise that although extensions were once seen as naff, they’re now celebrated as a breakthrough that can offer your clients a solution to a range of hair problems, whatever their age or budget. “Ten years ago hair extensions were a cottage industry,” says Warren Logan, owner of Hairspray.ie. “They were a bit like Botox in that women didn’t want to talk about them, admit they had them or even be seen to be getting them. But in the past few years the stigma has disappeared and hair extensions have gone mainstream. Women don’t care if it’s obvious they’ve had extensions put in.” When Hairspray.ie opened in 2007 the economic downturn was just about to hit, but Warren’s business has consistently grown by about 30 per cent year on year, and he says it’s all down to bringing hair extensions out into the open. “Our academy is booked out for six months and we have more than 11 million hits on our YouTube channel. People are hungry for information about hair extensions and they want to know what’s available. Salons can’t compete by just offering cutting and colouring services anymore. You have to add additional services to your salon to remain relevant,” he explains. “By incorporating them into your service menu and offering different price points, clients will incorporate extension into their regime, just like they would a half-head of highlights.” So what does this mean for salons? Paul Griffin of Zenith Hairdressing has been actively promoting Great Lengths in his Galway salon for about 20 months and has experienced a 150 per cent increase in the amount of customers opting to use the service. He says: “I’ve been doing extensions for 17 years and the quality and technology have improved so much. Our clients are very fashion-forward and they need to be able to react to the changing trends. Extensions are like a treatment; if you don’t tell your clients that they are there and what they can do for their hair, they won’t buy it.” This is something Derry Dowling, owner of Pzazz in Stillorgan, Co. Dublin, agrees with. “Extensions are a fashion statement as much as a look and just like false eyelashes or false nails, clients want to be able to experiment with them in an environment they feel comfortable in,” he reveals. For Denise McGoldrick, co-owner of El Pelo Designs in Colloney, Co. Sligo, giving her clients ease of access to hair extensions has seen a surge in business since the rural salon opened two months ago. “We’re doing four or five heads of extensions a week and a lot of our existing clients have started to experiment with extensions because they know and trust us,” she says. And, interestingly, it appears that the widespread success is down to a new breed of client.

Extensions
s
When Katie-Jane Goldin, owner of Great Lengths Ireland, decided to establish an Irish distribution office for the brand in 2011, the company went from having nine salons on their books to 96. “The market has changed significantly,” she says. “Where it was once all about achieving a long hair look, in the last couple of months we’ve noticed a 65 per cent increase in the number of shorter hair extensions being sold.” And this shift in attitude has prompted the company to commission a photoshoot of some of Ireland’s most familiar faces – who are also Great Lengths customers – to highlight that extensions don’t just relate to one specific demographic and don’t have to add length to the hair. “Most people associate hair extensions with adding length but they can also add a substantial amount of volume to shorter hair, too,” she says. “It’s about re-educating your client and changing their perception so they realise extensions don’t have to be about creating an artificial look or that they only relate to glamorous girls in their 20s.” Laura Francis, who works with Great Lengths at Hession Hairdressing’s Clontarf branch, finds that her typical client is now in her early 40s and that her client base has evolved because so many women are trying to enhance what they already have rather than radically change their appearance. “What most people don’t realise is that extensions can last up to six months so it works out the same, if not cheaper than having regular highlights or colour,” Laura reveals. “My older clients can afford to spend that little bit more on their hair and they’re willing to experiment with hair extensions.” As has Edwina Hayes, co-owner of Salon 87 in Kilkenny. Hayes was working as a secondary school teacher and started off as a hair extension technician but decided to re-train as a stylist and opened her own salon four years ago. “The type of customer coming to me for extensions has changed so much. It’s unusual to see older women with short hair now – they all want full, voluminous shoulder length styles – and a lot of our clients have started to add in a couple of rows of extensions that last about three months and only cost between E75 and E100. Also, they’ve been using extensions to enhance their hair colour without the use of bleach. They can see how extensions can enhance their cut and colour and when properly done it looks amazing.” Sean Taaffe, owner of the Sean Taaffe Hair and Beauty Group in Kerry, uses Flip-In extensions in his salons and finds that there has also been a shift towards more temporary methods. “Whether this is a shift in choice or based on price I’m not entirely certain,” he says. “For some people, the ability to have them is an advantage but we will always have clients who swear by other methods.” Whatever the reason – length, colour or volume – extensions mean money and that is something that can’t be ignored. Now all you have to do is decide what kind of extensions service you want to offer…

The blowdown
From car insurance to supermarkets, we’re all tuned-in to how we can make savings and ultimately spend less these days. And while the lure of discounting websites that offer hairdressing services for less than their market value can often prove tempting for even the most loyal clients, there is a way to fight back and protect your skills, client loyalty and bottom line. Blowdry.ie is a new website that aims to generate business for salons by offering clients budget busting blow-drys – E15 for short styles and E20 for long or curly hair – in their favourite salons during quiet times. Every salon that signs up will have full control of when the offer is available and the service is 100 per cent free of change to use for both the customer and the salon – the customer simply pays the salon directly at the end of their appointment, as they normally would. Your regular clients can get the same premium service at a reduced rate, your staff is kept busy on the salon floor and potential new clients are introduced to your business. What have you got to lose?

All bets are off
Failing to have adequate insurance for your salon is a gamble that never pays off, argues Barry O’Higgins
Insuring your salon against property damage or treatment claims from clients is good housekeeping for hairdressers. Over the years I’ve heard so many horror stories from hairdressers who either failed to renew their policy or didn’t take one out in the first place, and when something goes wrong they stand to lose everything. Just imagine the feeling of serving your time as a junior, working your way up, taking the big step of opening your own salon – getting all your ducks in a row except for the small detail of an insurance policy – and overnight you have a fire and the premises is wiped out. You can’t re-open for business so turnover grinds to a halt. However, bank loans, mortgages and staff wages need to be paid, not to mention the E8,000 bill from the Fire Brigade for putting out the blaze. Stock, fixtures and fittings need to be replaced, the building needs to be repaired and your landlord is looking for the rent. All this would have been covered, if only you had taken out that little insurance policy. It’s a no brainer when you think about it. I first became involved with the hairdressing business back in 1992 when I was approached by the IHF to come up with an insurance package to provide comprehensive cover and, more than 20 years later, we are still insuring Irish salons. There will always be people who think it’s a waste to spend money on insurance but they are most likely the same hairdressers who couldn’t be bothered doing patch tests on their clients’ hair. If they are willing to take a chance on not having insurance, sure as night follows day, they will be the same hairdresser that is willing to take a chance on their client’s safety.
