46 A VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR to you all! It’s been a lively couple of months with the Alfaparf Milano Fantastic Hairdresser Awards, the Peter Mark Colour Trophy and of course the Wella Professionals International TrendVision Award Final in Barcelona, which saw Darren Lacken (this month’s cover star) take home the Platinum award for Ireland. Meanwhile Valerie Finnegan Cahill from Ikon Hair Design discusses winning the Most Wanted Supreme Team title (page 38), and Dylan Bradshaw, another Irish Most Wanted winner, celebrates his team scooping the first International L’Oréal Colour Trophy award (page 6). What a fantastic illustration of Irish talent! It’s something I’ll miss as I move on to pastures new. Thank you to everyone who has been supportive and helpful, it’s been a pleasure!

2016 SALES ‘BEST FOR A DECADE’
Aoife Bradley and Jenny Dawson
THE NEWS AND KNOW-HOW FROM YOUR INDUSTRY
IT’S BEEN A BRIGHT YEAR for Irish hairdressing with retail sales up by as much as 20 per cent, according to Xpert Professional. David Donnellan, managing director of the industry insider and wholesaler, stated: “This year is the best year for retail for our clients since 2007.” According to David, upselling has proved very successful this year, with bonding products giving a huge financial boost to salons. “Hair additives by brands such as Alfaparf Milano and Olaplex are the number one method for upselling treatments in salons – between €15 and €25 is easily added to the most basic of colour services,” he explained. Other evidence of growth during 2016 was illustrated by more than 50 new salons with more than four stylists opening last year. “More than 120 salons have been refurbished in 2016, with the average refurbishment costing €15,000 in furniture and €30,000 in building costs,” David added. “2017 will look more towards ‘free from’ formulations and certified organic ingredients.” Mark O’Keeffe, owner of Sugar Culture, echoes the trend: “Turnover was up dramatically in 2016, even taking into consideration that we have expanded and opened up new salons.” He added that he has also noticed upselling of services continue to grow in his salons.
Irish hairdressing conquers the globe DARREN LACKEN, founder of Dublin’s Crow Street Collective, scooped the Platinum Color Vision title at the Wella International TrendVision Award Final in Barcelona. More than 1,400 hairdressers from around the world watched as 80 competitors from 45 countries battled to win the Color Vision and Creative Vision crowns. “I just wanted to get to the final, but I never really thought that I’d win – I was a bit shocked when they called out Ireland,” admitted Darren. For more, see page 10.
Meanwhile in Lisbon, Aoife Bradley and Jenny Dawson from Dublin’s Dylan Bradshaw Salon & Academy won the first International L’Oréal Professionnel Style & Colour Trophy for 2016. They competed against 13 international finalists in front of an audience of 2,000 hairdressers. Dylan Bradshaw, salon and academy owner and winner of the Most Wanted Exceptional Stylist Award, said: “This is a great achievement for the girls and the team. We are very proud to have represented Ireland on an international stage and to have won!”
L’ORÉAL PROFESSIONNEL APP TARGETS HAIRDRESSERS’ HEALTH L’ORÉAL PROFESSIONNEL has launched an app for hairdressers as part of an initiative to combat musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). The 15’ Coach app was developed with the Global Alliance for Musculoskeletal Health and L’Oréal Professionnel hopes the app will train hairdressers how to avoid MSDs with a 15-minute daily exercise regime. Musculoskeletal disorders represent 75 per cent of job-related health issues in hairdressers, such as severe back and neck pains and carpal tunnel syndrome. Free to download, the app features a warm-up and advice on postures and stretching.

PETER MARK RATES IN TOP 10 FOR CUSTOMER SERVICE PETER MARK, Ireland’s largest hairdressing group, has been named the sixth best brand for customer service across all sectors in the country, in the latest report from Amárach Research, commissioned by Customer Experience Insights. An annual survey that evaluates 170 brands and 42,000 customer experiences across six key pillars that include loyalty, value for money and client comments. Cathal Keaveney, head of professional development at Peter Mark said: “We are never complacent about our service and we know every time a new or existing client comes through our doors, we need to impress.”

The distance clients will travel to visit their hairdresser, topping the list of small businesses customers are willing to travel the furthest to. The distance of 58km (36 miles) beat the dentist, a garage or mechanics and cafés or restaurants, according to research by American Express in the UK.
L’ORÉAL COLOUR JAM SHOWCASE COMES TO DUBLIN ACADEMY THE L’ORÉAL ACADEMY in Dublin played host as a hub of inspiration, colour, music and fashion for the brand’s annual Creative Jam showcase. L’Oréal Professionnel’s budding young talent showcased their take on what’s hot in hair. This is the first time Colour Jam has been held in Ireland, with first and second year Colour ID specialists from Ireland, Scotland and Northern Ireland coming together to share their inspirations. With artists representing salons such as Hession Hairdressing, Zeba Hairdressing, Style Club, Toni&Guy and Foxy Chopper, Colour Jam is set to become a firm favourite in the Dublin hairdressing calendar.
LEGENDARY STYLIST LEONARD PASSES AWAY ICONIC HAIRDRESSER Leonard Lewis has died at the age of 78. Known as Leonard of Mayfair, he was most famous as the stylist who gave Twiggy her era-defining crop. His five-storey Mayfair salon was synonymous with the Swinging ’60s and was an incredible talent factory – protégés included John Frieda, Nicky Clarke, Daniel Galvin and Michael Van Clarke. Leonard also enjoyed a successful career working on the films of Stanley Kubrick, including A Clockwork Orange, with Leonard cutting in the famous looks rather than styling wigs for the actors.

KELLY LEUNG HAIR DESIGN, MALAHIDE
Emma Leung and I opened the doors to our new salon three months ago and we’re off to an amazing start with about 80 clients a week. We have six staff and are exclusively stocking Kevin Murphy haircare and Great Lengths extensions. The new salon has a private ritual room where our clients can enjoy having their treatments away from the bustle of the salon.
ANNE MARIE STEWART PETER MARK, CASTLEBAR, CO. MAYO
In the winter months, we see a lot of clients opting to switch to chocolate mahogany tones, deep rich reds and glossy dark blondes, so we’ll be busy with the bowls! Smartbond is big for us right now too, so we expect to be doing lots more colour transformations with that.
CATHERINE HANRAHAN RAINBOW’S HAIR STUDIO, CHARLEVILLE, CO. CORK
The team is recovering after a fantastic Christmas in our new salon and we’re giving clients a special treat with every cut and colour. I’m looking forward to going on a course with Sassoon in January and using new techniques. And we’re planning our Wella Professionals TrendVision entry too!

SEAN TAAFFE CELEBRATES 10 YEARS IN BUSINESS SEAN TAAFFE Hair Salon Group has celebrated an incredible decade in business. Sean, who has been hairdressing for 27 years, set up his own salon 10 years ago and now owns five shops in Kerry, employing 57 staff across the three unisex salons, one men’s salon and two hairdressing academies. Sean Taaffe said: “I am very aware of how lucky I am to do what I love, and to share it every day with our fabulous customers and an amazing team of professionals.” Five of Sean’s staff also celebrated 10 years with the group and were presented with crystal plaques to acknowledge their dedication. They are Aisling Madigan, Marta Plechowska, Sarah Ahern, Michelle O’Shea and Kara McDonagh.
ROCO GETS ARCHITECTURAL
ROCO HAIR has teamed up with an architect to create a unique hairstyle based on a building’s structure. Initially, the brand worked with Gradon Architects after a neighbouring business in Derry caught fire and RoCo was forced to relocate. Ronan Stewart, co-founder at RoCo Hair, saw the similarities between the two professions and the style – Hairmetic – was created as a result. “When we sat down with Gradon Architects to initially discuss our plans for the new salon I couldn’t help notice the similarities in our working methods and thought this would make a great project,” said Ronan.

“I DID IT!”
WELLA PROFESSIONALS INTERNATIONAL TRENDVISION AWARD – COLOR VISION HAS A NEW HOME… IN DUBLIN! THANKS TO DARREN LACKEN’S SUCCESS AT THE ITVA FINAL, CROW STREET COLLECTIVE HAS A SHINY NEW PIECE OF FURNITURE TO KEEP POLISHED
YOU’RE ON A STAGE in front of 1,400 people from around the globe. The noise is deafening, the lights are blinding, and wow this award is really heavy… you’ve just won Platinum International TrendVision Award for Color Vision, and you’re on a Barcelona stage with Eugene Souleiman, Josh Wood and Patrick Cameron… another great result for hairdressing in Dublin! It’s only been a few weeks since that incredible winning night and Darren Lacken from Crow Street Collective is still grinning. And it’s no wonder – scooping Platinum for Color Vision at ITVA after entering the competition four times over the years (he scooped a Silver at the Irish Final in 2014) will do that to a guy. He confesses to being a bit of a competition junkie. “I love every part of the competition process – from

interpreting the trend to working with the model, make-up artist and stylist,” Darren admits. “It doesn’t bother me if I don’t win, as long as I think my entry was good. I love the buzz and the fun of the competition.” Did he ever think he would win? “I enter lots of competitions but this is the biggest colour award you can win. I never really thought that I’d win it – I was a bit shocked when they called out Ireland,” admits Darren who opened his salon, Crow Street Collective in Temple Bar, back in September 2015. He was quietly confident at the Ireland and UK Final in London. “The model was really beautiful, so that’s always a good starting point,” he laughs. “I also felt that I nailed the brief better this year than ever before.” Winning in Barcelona all became a little surreal for Darren. “There were many big industry icons congratulating me – Josh Wood, Akin Konizi, Jason Gray, Darren Ambrose and Sassoon’s Bruce Masefield. Jason were delighted as they were part of the mentoring team in the run-up to the final, along with Jake Unger from HOB Salons.” Since he won the ITVA gong, Darren’s Facebook page, email and phone has exploded with good wishes from colleagues, other stylists and friends. He has already appeared on UTV Ireland’s The Pulse and there’s plenty more media activity planned this year. “Winning has given me more confidence. I’m very passionate about competing but when you win, it makes you think ‘I’m really good at this’ as well,” he adds. “You can get into a rut by just doing your job every day, but this win has given me the impetus to push boundaries a bit more with clients and suggest bigger changes.” Darren has certainly set the bar high, and he hopes other Irish hairdressers will be inspired to enter ITVA in 2017 – giving them the platform to shine that they deserve.

WE LOVE THE ITVA FINAL FROM WELLA PROFESSIONALS… BUT WE ADORE ALL THOSE INSPIRATIONAL SHOWS ON STAGE TOO!
WHEN THE WORLD gets together at the Wella Professionals International TrendVision Awards, there’s always an incredible show to inspire and often a trophy or two for Ireland to take home! Held in Barcelona, the live finals kept 80 competitors from 45 countries busy before the 1,400 guests took a seat to enjoy the brilliant line up of talent on the catwalk. Now, where do we start? Wella Spain’s creative director Alexis Ferrer opened with a beautiful display. We saw the legendary Sassoon Academy team celebrate the world of colour, Michael Polsinelli and Shay Dempsey wowed wirth their Sebastian show and multi-TrendVision winner HOB Salons took us deeper into its Muse collection. A real star was also saluted as Wella presented a Lifetime Achievement Award to Robert Lobetta, for his revolutionary work over the past 30 years with Sebastian Professional. Then later – ahead of the famous and fabulous Parade of Nations and the reveal of the winners – guests were treated to a tantalising display of the 2017 trends. Spring/summer 2017 Ultra Contouring was brought to life by Russia’s Dmitry Vinokurov, while the Netherlands’s Hester Wernert-Rijn unveiled A/W17’s New Norm. Of course, the adored Patrick Cameron played host to it all, revealing London as the host city for ITVA 2017, too! And when it was time to celebrate the winners, we all know who was celebrating the most! Irish eyes were smiling indeed, while many more were looking off wistfully, thinking could 2017 be their year…?

THE BUSINESS EDIT NEED FOR SPEED HOW QUICKLY SHOULD YOU RESPOND TO CLIENTS ON SOCIAL MEDIA? WITH CLIENTS ONLINE at all times of the day and night across a variety of social media platforms, salons are under increasing pressure to respond quickly to posts, tweets and queries. But what is a reasonable expectation for salons and just how quickly should you respond to complaints on social media – especially about a negative experience in-salon? “Social media has created an ‘always online’ environment and because of this most customers expect a quick reaction. As a business owner you must be prepared to handle any enquiry at unusual times to stop it from spiralling,” says Ian O’Keeffe, who looks after Sugar Culture’s social media as digital brand manager. He believes that 15 minutes should be the goal for responding in order to make a good impression for any negative comments and/or complaints. However, he feels most

WHY DID YOU WANT TO BE A HAIRDRESSER? From a really young age it was all I was interested in. I gave myself my first fringe aged seven and all my Barbie dolls had haircuts! When I started my apprenticeship, I knew I was in the right career. Hairdressing has never felt like work. It’s fun and rewarding.
customers will generally expect a response within an hour. “The faster the response, the better you’ll look,” adds Ian. And does he respond on both social media and on the phone? “Yes, both. If the client complains online, we find it wise to thank them for their comment, briefly apologise, acknowledge the issue and explain our intentions to investigate and follow up. If the issue is severe it would be a good idea to get their details and take the issue offline as it’s more personable.” So just how fast is Sugar Culture’s response time on Facebook and has it been awarded the coveted ‘very responsive to messages’ badge? “Our group consists of five businesses that have fully established pages that are carefully maintained, hold a 100 per cent response time and have the badge – but others are still in their infancy and are working toward the badge,” says Ian. Sabrina Hill, owner of Kopper Hair Salon in Glanmire near Cork city, says that she always has someone monitoring the salon’s social media accounts at all times so that if a message or a bad review comes through she’s immediately informed and ready to contact the client. “The priority is to make sure that we make immediate contact and communicate to the client that we will look after their needs as this will help ease any uncertainty and fears they may have. A problem that is left to go on over a number of days can result in bad-mouthing and further negative comments/posts on social media,” says Sabrina. “There is nothing worse than receiving a message of complaint or seeing a bad review, but in my view there is no smoke without fire and more often it’s a case of bad communication that has resulted in an unhappy client. This alone can, and should, be a wake-up call to business owners and managers to look over the standards of the salon to ensure that further mistakes don’t happen.” She adds: “We are all human and we make mistakes so complaints can happen. I look at it as a challenge to turn a negative into a positive by changing the client’s view of my business and becoming a loyal, lifelong client.”

LIFE LESSONS DANIELLE KENNEDY, MANAGING DIRECTOR, LLOYDS HAIR GROUP, WATERFORD Your people are your product! Your team is the most important part of your business so you have to look after its members. If you look after your team well, it will filter down to how your team looks after your clients, because you’ve created a certain culture.
Education and continuous professional development are so important but not just for trainees; the industry is ever changing and you have to adapt and upskill with it. Just because you were a successful stylist or salon five years ago, doesn’t mean you can kick back and relax for the rest of your career. Staying at the top of your game isn’t easy – it’s actually hard but it’s also what makes this business so special and interesting.
Your customer service is everything; it’s just as important as the quality of the hair services you provide. You need to make sure your team gets customer service training. It’s not enough to just give a great haircut in a service industry as all sorts of things can go wrong in a salon. But if your team members have good customer service skills, they can look after the client in a fantastic way and make sure the client leaves having had a positive experience.
You need to be a fantastic listener in this industry as well as having great people skills. You need to listen to your clients, trainers and managers. All those people will get you to where you want to go in your career, especially your clients.
I think passion and hard graft are the most important skills for hairdressing; if you have those you can be whatever you want to be.

Inside story SEAN TAAFFE HAIR & BEAUTY KILLORGLIN, CO. KERRY
Having bought the building next door, Sean Taaffe has opened a hair salon in the new space and moved its beauty salon into the old space. “These old premises are two terraced houses and we used black granite on the exterior of the shop to make them more imposing and unite them,” explains owner Sean. “The design and layout was my own plan; for each of our salons we like to have an individual look. Our Tralee salon is colourful and quite in your face, so I wanted to create an oasis of calm here, an escape from the hustle and bustle.” The flooring, chairs and walls are in neutral tones with the option of adding colour later with brightly coloured accessories. The chairs and wash units are by Kiela with each unit individually made so it can house products behind them. “We have 12 sections in the salon split between colour and styling; a nail bar in the beauty salon and a dedicated bridal suite that doubles as a VIP room or for private appointments. Having everything under one roof is important today,” Sean adds.

STAY SHARP
AWARD-WINNING STYLIST DENISE WALSH, OWNER OF RUSTIQ SALONS IN KILKENNY AND CARLOW, EXPLAINS WHAT HAS REALLY HELPED HER ACHIEVE HER AMBITIONS CUTTING EDGE
Rustiq salons owner Denise Walsh believes continuous professional development is essential to stay at the top. The entire Rustiq team has completed courses exclusively available to ALFAPARF Milano clients at the ALFAPARF Academy, the country’s largest education provider to the hair industry. Courses such as Colour Masters, Nexxt Generation Cutting and those with global ambassador, Paul Stafford, ensure her team’s technical expertise, while the Fantastic Business Masters, Fantastic Salon Focus, Fantastic Business Programme and Fantastic Hairdresser has driven her business forward.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS
Denise insists that her staff take four courses per year outside the salon. “Training sharpens creative skills; competing in industry competitions increases motivation and drive, and all of these skills come back to the salon. It’s not just about cutting hair, it’s also about talking and listening to the customer. Our goal is to make people look and feel fantastic consistently – the Fantastic training courses with Alan Austin-Smith
at ALFAPARF’s Academy have helped us achieve that goal.” Continuous training ensures stylists have the necessary skills to successfully compete, as shown by Rustiq’s wins at the 2016 ALFAPARF Milano Fantastic Hairdresser Awards, scooping the Fantastic Hairdresser and Fantastic Junior titles.
GAME CHANGER
“When I opened my salon in 2005, I didn’t know anything about business. My skills lay in creativity, tutoring and mentoring,” says Denise. “Seven years ago when I moved to ALFAPARF Milano, I started using the education facilities at the Academy. This was a game-changer, and our success, with full columns booked three months in advance, is all down to ALFAPARF’s education. If I could share one secret, it would be that education is crucial in this business.” Two courses stand out for Denise: “Colour Masters for technical training and the Fantastic Business programme, both from ALFAPARF Milano, turned my salon around! Education has helped us to be so much better and also encouraged the team to enter competitions and win. We’ve planned our training right up to August 2017.”
FACT FILE ★ Denise Walsh has been a stylist for 23 years ★ Moved to Australia aged 21 ★ Worked as a part-time stylist for a year ★ Was appointed salon manager 12 months later ★ Promoted to manager of five salons ★ Denise returned to Ireland in December 2005 and opened her first salon with one junior assistant ★ Within three months Denise had three more stylists, a nail technician and make-up artist ★ Opened her second salon in 2011 ★ Currently employs 25 staff ★ Denise and her team began attending courses at the ALFAPARF Academy seven years ago

ELAYNE ARCHBOLD
LEARNING CURVE
CONTINUOUS PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT IN HAIRDRESSING IS AS IMPORTANT AS HAVING A GOOD COLUMN – IT HELPS TO RETAIN CLIENTS, INCREASE CREATIVITY ON THE SALON FLOOR AND ENSURES CLIENTS NEVER GET BORED WITH YOUR WORK EDUCATION IS AS important now as it has ever been in the hairdressing industry. With constantly changing consumer tastes and global style influences available quicker than you can say Instagram, clients want the most up-to-date looks, newest products and best treatments available. The benefits for a salon of having a philosophy of continuous professional development for all staff are many – increased client services, better consultations with knowledge of trends and, ultimately, happier clients leaving the salon. Yes it requires investment from salon owners, but the payback is worth it. Elayne Archbold, senior stylist and head educator at Sugar Culture, says that training and continuous professional development has always been part of the ethos within Sugar Culture. “Providing the resources for stylists allows them to grow as individuals in their field, keeping them up to date with trends that can be transferred back to the salon and
30
30-34_Education2.indd 1
providing new opportunities for the salon and individuals to advertise and upsell,” she says. “Currently, I’m in the middle of exams to obtain my colour specialist degree with L’Oréal Professionnel. I specialise in styling, but developing my skills in colour has instilled more confidence in me and will open up my column to a whole new clientele.” The launch of the Sugar Culture Institute has also been an exciting addition. “Not only has our training institute given us a platform to educate our trainees and other salons, we also operate in-house training. We have many staff members who have knowledge in all aspects of hairdressing and are only too willing to pass this on,” says Elayne. Since the summer of last year, Sugar Culture has introduced a whole new way of educating its trainees. “We now provide one full day’s training Monday to Wednesday as a paid working day, replacing the normal after hours training

we all experienced when serving our time as trainees. We found it to be much more productive in developing these new superstars,” says Elayne. “Their progression is tested along the way in a technical manner and in more creative ways through photoshoots and in-salon competitions, which really prepares them for graduation and exploring the world as hairdressers who are ready to take on salon work and session styling. It feels like the future for training,” she adds. Dylan Bradshaw, owner and creative director of Dylan Bradshaw Salon and db Academy, says that education is key at his salon. “We have personal training and development plans in place for all of our team members to ensure they always offer the highest standard of hairdressing to our clients. Keeping on top of the newest cutting/colouring techniques, products and services ensures that each team member is at the top of their game,” says Dylan.
CREATIVE HEAD IRELAND
30-34_Education2.indd 2
“It is important that our stylists and colourists are ‘current’ so I encourage them to keep up with the trends in hairdressing and fashion. We are in such a fast-paced industry that failure to upskill will leave you behind. Remember to always invest in yourself and your future with ongoing training as that hunger for growth will get you far in this business,” adds Dylan. Last year the Cutting for your Client course developed at the db Academy provided stylists with the necessary consultation skills as well as the tips and techniques they needed when introducing a ‘trend’ cut to a client, which then can be easily styled and maintained at home. “Colour is an ever growing category, which allows our clients to adjust their look easily. It’s ideal for long-haired clients who want a change without losing those inches. For this reason we have introduced new courses to our academy focusing on a more advanced level of colour,” says Dylan.

#Education TAMAR CHAMBERS
SEAN TAAFFE
Sean Taaffe has two academies in Kerry, located in Killarney and Tralee, and believes continuous professional training is the key to avoiding boredom in your job. “I see this often when I meet people at hairdressing events; they’re bored with the industry and their work. The question I always ask them is: how long is it since you were on a training course? Chances are they will say ages ago. My response is usually that it’s no wonder that they’re disillusioned and bored with what they’re doing as there’s no challenge, no inspiration and, ultimately, it is your clients that get bored of you and move on,” explains Sean. “We have a catchphrase at work – #learnmoreearnmore – and it’s true. We’re currently working on our 2017 calendar and planning a very exciting year ahead with courses from homegrown talents such as Wayne Lloyd, Bridget Haren and Aaron Healy to former international creative director for Saco, Jack Bayne, and the awesome Mazella & Palmer.” This year the Sean Taaffe Hairdressing Group is benefitting from Skillsnet funding, a Government-backed scheme that supports businesses in providing training and
32

upskilling. “We are really lucky to have teamed up with Skillsnet for 2017. This means that for the majority of courses, Skillsnet subsidises each course by 20 per cent – a win-win situation,” enthuses Sean. “We are unique in the Munster region in that we not only run our own courses, but also bring in many guest artists from abroad for training seminars and workshops, many of whom you would typically need to travel outside of Ireland to see working professionally,” he adds. “You never stop learning and developing, which is why you can never stop upskilling and improving your techniques and theory,” says Tamar Chambers, artistic director of Robert Chambers. “Not only will you have more confidence delivering your desired result with precision, but you can also charge more for your expertise. This is the best promotion you can achieve – get more skills and charge your worth. When our stylists complete the Wella Master Colour Programme, their prices go up between €10 to €20.” There’s also training every six weeks in the Wella Studio with new colour techniques and product development: “Retail skills need constant updating. We feel it’s important to have some training off site, as it’s easier to learn in a different environment.” New at Robert Chambers is a collaborative approach to passing on skills. “We host workshops every three to six weeks, with stylists teaching a specific skill to others and all stylists are welcome,” she adds. “Experienced stylists have a wealth of knowledge and tricks that are important to share with others.” Darragh Curtin, managing director of Bellissimo, says that the level of importance placed on training can be judged by monitoring the amount of time dedicated to training events and teaching in the salon. “If you are not progressing then you are regressing, because time is passing and you are not moving forward. We have always adopted the mantra of ‘continuous improvement’ from the top down and the salon team has fostered and promoted a culture of training and development.

“Once you are surrounded by training then this becomes the norm for you and what you expect as well,” says Darragh. Over the past two years, Bellissimo has focused on raising the ‘colour IQ’ in the salon. “We put together a bespoke ‘advanced colour programme’ with our colour partners, Wella Professionals, which we hosted in-salon one day a month for six months for each group of stylists. The benefits of this were manifold: because they were completing the training as a group, the techniques and ideas were being discussed and adopted daily on the salon floor. Stylists offered a bespoke colour service for their clients and they were far more confident in their techniques. It also lowered wastage levels in the salon,” says Darragh. The salon’s foundation (junior) team’s training also offers the opportunity to gain a diploma in hairdressing through City & Guilds as Bellissimo is an accredited City & Guilds centre. “This year, we are running an eight-module personal development course entitled Life Strategies, offering opportunities outside of purely trade skills. We hosted a night on the Alexander Technique, with the goal of improving movement and posture,” he adds. Holly O’Keeffe, head of education at Peter Mark, echoes the earlier sentiment that continuous education and development helps the stylist be more fashion and trend oriented. “They see themselves as hair artists or designers instead of just maintenance hairdressers. By exposing themselves to new techniques and trends and investing in their learning, stylists become more involved with their clients,” she says. For 2017, it is now possible to complete a full Peter Mark apprenticeship in hairdressing within two and a half years. This training is module based and allows each student to manage their own progression. In addition, stylists will be invited to attend technical updates in 2017. “At these sessions they will be updated on everything new, including the latest key colouring techniques and emerging trends. Every year, Peter Mark invites leading international guest artists to share their techniques and knowledge with our stylists directly through exclusive in-house

workshops and seminars,” adds Holly. “We aim to be forward thinking and predict both the technical and personal skills our stylists will need to deliver high standards. One area we have focused on is Personal Presentation, empowering our stylists to communicate more effectively with their clients in today’s market.” Stephen Flanagan, Alfaparf Milano’s Nexxt Generation stylist educator, says that continuous education helps stylists remain at the top of their game. “Education leads to better technical performance and better knowledge of products and their benefits, leading to a busier weekly column,” says Stephen. “What I really love about education, though, is the increase in confidence and passion it provides. I’ve seen slightly jaded stylists after 10 years on the salon floor, leave a training session feeling inspired and ready to try something new.” He adds: “For early 2017, the amalgamation of our Nexxt Generation stylist and colourist programmes is quite revolutionary. Alfaparf Milano is internationally renowned for colour so to design a programme that focuses on both precision cutting and colour techniques in under two years was very ambitious, but demonstrates our passion to educate the industry and help foster the next generation of amazing stylists in Ireland.”

Valerie Finnegan-Cahill and the Ikon team
THE 2016 MOST WANTED SUPREME TEAM WINNER BELIEVES STAFF DEVELOPMENT IS THE BIGGEST ASSET YOUR BUSINESS HAS
MOST WANTED
THE SUPREMES! THE WINNER OF the first ever Irish Supreme Team title at the 2016 Most Wanted Awards in London is Ikon Hair Design in Cork city and you can see why when you read their mission statement: ‘team work makes the dream work’. “We understand that as a team we are stronger, so there’s huge emphasis on team development through our Ambassador Programme and on team focus with our Salon Success Standard,” explains Valerie Finnegan-Cahill, owner of Ikon Hair Design. “We know the importance of each client but also their experience in the salon and how this is reflective of us.” Valerie started the salon in 1998 and now employs 11 people. It’s already won more than 30 awards and Valerie places a huge emphasis on training and how teamwork can boost your

business significantly and motivate all your staff. “As a team we all have one strong goal that keeps us motivated and focused – that is our Salon Success Standard. We work towards that goal every day, everything in the salon can be directly brought back to it. This gives us something to manage every day. It’s a measurement of how we do our job and it involves everyone,” she adds. The Ikon team regularly has brainstorming days in order to set goals and work out how to achieve them together. “At the moment our goal is to be wowing 170 clients a week with an average bill of €70 and increasing our clients’ visits to an average of every six weeks. “To ensure that our customers’ experience with us is going to be the best it can be, we defined our salon, our service, our

personal standards and our job descriptions – this gives clarity and direction to every team member. “We then discussed our expectations, responsibilities, motivators and what rewards we attach to our goal,” explains Valerie. She also stresses the importance of each team member managing their goals. “Every morning we do a Toolbox Talk at 9am – a catch-up on the previous day and a look at what’s happening during the day ahead. This gets everyone ready and focused. Every week Ikon reviews how many clients had colour, treatments, bought products, etc. “This is not about looking at last week’s monetary figures, it’s not about retail targets – it’s about looking at how well you’re doing your job, measuring what comes in and what goes out,” adds Valerie.

CREATIVITY ABOUNDED at this year’s seventh annual Alfaparf Milano Fantastic Hairdresser Awards 2016 held at Dublin’s DoubleTree by Hilton. Almost 1,250 stylists and industry insiders attended the gala event including 400 hairdressers vying for top places in the nine award categories. The awards give stylists and salons an opportunity to show both their creative strengths and commercial acumen through six artistic and two business awards and, in addition, the Alfaparf Inixia Photographic Award. Hosted by stylist and designer Brendan Courtney, all nine winners received an Irish-designed and handcrafted stained glass trophy from Alfaparf and Alan Austin-Smith, founder of the Fantastic Hairdresser Company. The theme for this year’s show was an homage to David Bowie and the Alfaparf Milano Nexxt Generation Style Ambassador Creative team set the scene with a dramatic segment entitled ‘The Thin White Duke’. Intercoiffure Ireland’s art and fashion team delivered a choreographed fantasy segment inspired by the film The Man Who Fell To Earth. And finally Belfast stylist Paul Stafford, Alfaparf Milano’s global ambassador, continued the theme with a decades-spanning homage to the iconic artist.
