THE NEWS AND KNOW-HOW FROM YOUR INDUSTRY
ICONS HONOURED AND STARS BORN AT IHF AWARDS MORE THAN 200 members of the hairdressing industry gathered together in the Gibson Hotel in Dublin for the 2018 Irish Hairdressers Federation Icon and Star Team Awards. The Icons section of the event celebrated the truly outstanding in the world of Irish hairdressing. Mark O’Keeffe, owner of Sugar Culture salons, accepted the IHF Icon Business Award, while Joanne O’Neill, owner of Joanne O’Neill Hairdressing in Antrim, scooped the IHF Icon Award. Paul Davey from Davey Davey Hair took home the IHF Social Media Award in recognition of the innovative Hairdressing Live, an online platform that enables hairdressers to watch tutorials from industry experts. The new IHF Star Team was also announced. They are (pictured below, from left to right): Jodie Quinn of House of Colour, Stephanie Thompson of Zinc Hair & Beauty, Jade Condron of Indigo Hair & Beauty and Cara Finlay of Sarah Mason Professional. The first ever IHF Gents Star Team was revealed, too, made up of Lewis Griffin of The Academy Barber, David Boardman of Dylan Bradshaw, Sarah Kelly of Lloyds Hair Waterford and Christina Timlin of Society Salon. The IHF Star Team will enjoy a year of education, training and shoots.
TRALEE STYLIST IMPRESSES WITH CREATIVE VISION LORRAINE HORAN OF The House of Glamour in Tralee was revealed as the overall winner of milk_shake Creative Vision Live 2018, fighting off international competition. She impressed at the Irish heat, which took place at The Wright Venue in Dublin and was hosted by milk_shake education managers Becky Wardrop and Ricky Younis, before being awarded the top prize. Becky said of Lorraine’s win: “Her interpretation of pop art, her colouring and styling skills and her presentation were all outstanding. Creative Vision Live is just the beginning of Lorraine’s journey and we can’t wait to see what happens next.” Also at the event, milk_shake ambassadors David Vault Baker, Shelley Pengilly, Julian Dalrymple and Andrew Smith presented their colourful creations in a section entitled Colour Nation, giving a dose of inspiration to all there.
Start 2019 with a clean, green slate. The Kemon Bellessere range is inspired by nature, and uses precious argan and flax oils to care for the hair. We love the night treatment – this velvety-smooth formula soaks into strands overnight for gorgeously soft hair. RRP from €13.95 xpertpro.ie

LIFE LESSONS
CHELSEA KEARNEY BLOWN AWAY
Step away from social media. Sometimes we need a break and to stop comparing ourselves to others. After all, people only show what they want you to see. You’re never really qualified. It doesn’t matter how long you’re in the industry or how much experience you have, there is always something to new to learn. Time spent training is time well spent. Teamwork makes the dream work. I am lucky to have people that share the same work ethic as me – surround yourself in positivity. Likes don’t equal happiness. I’ve had 20 likes and 2,000 likes on work I’ve done and I’m proud of both. Sometimes a cup of coffee gets more likes than a six-hour colour correction – don’t take it personally! Sometimes it doesn’t work. I’ve had a hair salon for nearly 10 years, and I’ve had some amazing highs but also some lows. Running a business is hard – just take the bad with the good and move on.

THE BUSINESS EDIT
SHOULD SALONS AGREE TO COLOUR SERVICES FOR UNDER-16S? THE PAST YEAR has been an explosive one for colour in salons, driven in no small part by the flood of beauty images on Instagram and Pinterest. As under-16s are huge users of social media, it’s understandable that many want the colour transformations they see – and would happily hit up the Bank of Mum and Dad to get it done professionally. However, the European Commission insists that all permanent hair colours carry warnings that they’re not intended for use on children under the age of 16, whether the colour comes in DIY boxes or is used by salons. The aim of these warnings is to lower the risk of young people becoming sensitive to permanent hair colours. Almost all permanent hair colorants include PPD, which is most often associated with allergic reactions to hair colour, and the younger that a person starts to use permanent hair colour, the higher the probability that they may develop allergies to these products. Hair colour allergies are a serious matter; they can range from itching, rashes and swelling to breathing difficulties and even being hospitalised. One of the queens of Instagram colour transformations, Most Wanted Colour Expert Sophia Hilton, admits she doesn’t colour under-16s because of insurance issues, but would like to. “We need to move with times, kids are not kids anymore. Why are we always so slow to recognise change?” she asks. Conor Doyle, senior colourist and educator at Peter Mark, agrees that the hairdressing industry ought to move with the times and give credit to creative teenagers who want to look their best. “It’s something I’ve actually changed my mind on recently,” he says. “A first, seeing a kid
run around with rainbow fantasy locks freaked me out – how irresponsible – and then I reflected on 13-year-old goth-me and how much I would have resented that opinion. It’s only hair and why shouldn’t kids be allowed express themselves?” However Conor admits that it’s important to follow the lines set down by insurance companies. “I actually thought it was illegal to colour hair on those under the age of 16 until recently. It’s not, but insurance companies will usually not cover you for under-16s due to the risk of allergic reaction. And that’s why I wouldn’t take it on myself.” “We offer low maintenance colour services for teens from 15 years of age with their parent’s or guardian’s consent,” says Karen Whelan, director at The Colour Room at Aidan Fitzgerald. “We inform them a skin test must be done and explain that longterm colouring can damage hair.” So what advice can hairdressers give, when the pressure for young people to change their appearance can be so strong? “If under-16s do choose to colour their hair, it should be done in a way that’s safe, temporary, low maintenance and low risk –- please nobody take a 13-year-old for a full bleach and tone!” says Conor. “Perhaps they could use gentle, vegetable-based, direct dyes only towards the end of the hair and a patch test should always be done first.” “We don’t colour under-16s and would always advise them not to do it,” says Ger Hennessy, owner of Hennessy Hair Studio. “But, in an age when social media is so pervasive, we try to compliment under 16s on their natural hair to boost their confidence.” With the right pep talk, a cool cut and an on-trend style, you can make clients feel fantastic without any risks.

#CHedit WHY DID YOU WANT TO BE A BARBER? I was always an artist, not an academic. I struggled in school, so I knew college was not for me. I would head into town every couple of weeks to get my hair cut – the place I went was Cut & Sew in Temple Bar. The atmosphere in the shop was always buzzing, and the staff there had a passion for what they were doing. It was where I wanted to be.
WHAT HAVE BEEN YOUR HIGHLIGHTS SO FAR? I worked at a charity event set up by Jason Brophy, a barber I look up to. I was given the opportunity to work alongside him for the day and, after the event, Jason told me I had potential and later asked me if I would be interested in working with him. My other main highlight is more recent – joining Cut & Sew, and working in the Dundrum shop.
JAKE KEATING AGE: 21 CUT & SEW, DUBLIN
WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN 10 YEARS’ TIME? I would like to be working for myself, with my own shop and a dedicated team of barbers. It would also be great to have my own education courses to teach the next generation of barbers who are as eager to learn as me. WHAT IS YOUR DREAM BARBERING GIG? It would be to share a stage with talented barbers from around the world at a convention where we could share our skills and experiences with people who have the same passion. I want to inspire others.

Inside story MASK HAIR DUBLIN
After 30 years in the hair and make-up industry, Valerie Patterson decided that it was time for a new challenge – launching a new salon in partnership with her brother, Ray. Her vision was to create a one-stop shop where style meets relaxation. “I love to do the ‘overall look’ – cutting, colour, Great Lengths hair extensions and make-up, all in a relaxed atmosphere,” says Valerie. She found the perfect space on Grafton Street, Dublin, overlooking College Green. “It has big windows and high ceilings but very little wall space so I had to be inventive,” she says. The siblings worked together for two months to finish the decorating themselves. “I did the wall painting – there are astrology signs and freehand designs,” Valerie says. There are also plenty of flowers and greenery to bring a little bit of the outdoors inside, and Valerie’s favourite section of the salon is the tiled back wall. “I’ve always loved metal ceiling tiles so I ordered them online from Florida and cut and fitted them myself.” And you can’t forget the show-stopping centrepiece – the huge, sparkling mask that gives the salon its name. “I found the mask in Spain and had it shipped over. Then we put LED lights and mosaic tiles behind it. I love an art project!”

SO WHAT’S NEW? NEW IGORA VIBRANCE IS AN ADVANCED MOISTURISING DEMI-PERMANENT HAIR COLOUR WITH A LIQUID FORMULA THAT CAN TURN INTO A GEL OR A CREAM. THIS MEANS YOUR CLIENTS CAN EXPECT MORE, AND YOU CAN DELIVER MORE… MORE PERFORMANCE – up to 100 per cent more INSTAShine (versus untreated hair) with increased hair protection, thanks to the Moisturising Protecting Complex with AQUAXYL Technology. This innovative technology controls the hair’s inner moisture level to stabilise the internal structure of each hair fibre, protecting against hair breakage and creating a clean canvas for an even colour result. The alcohol-free formula is enriched with Vitamins B3 and B5, helping to shield the surface of the hair and creating a beautiful, vibrant shine. MORE CONVENIENCE – the new liquid formula with a 1-to-1 mixing ratio is easier to formulate, faster to mix and more efficient to apply. MORE VERSATILITY – the state-of-the-art Activator system allows you to choose between a gel or a cream consistency. Choose the IGORA Vibrance Activator Gel, containing a gelifying agent that creates a unique gel consistency, for bottle applications and quick services at the backwash. Or switch to the IGORA Vibrance Activator Lotion, whose special thickening agent transforms the liquid colour into a cream consistency, for faster applications and ease of use. MORE CHOICE – you now have access to a full range of demipermanent colour services, including Dual System Application, Tone-on-Tone, Pastel Toning, Neutralisation/Colour Correction, Colour Refreshing and Clear Glossing. Matching harmoniously with IGORA Royal shades, the 68 IGORA Vibrance shades include IGORA Vibrance Clear 0-00, a non-pigmented formulation that can be used as a stand-alone gloss upgrade after every colour service, or to dilute IGORA Vibrance shades to reduce depth and intensity and to create pastel tones. The new unique consistencies now available with IGORA Vibrance mean you can adapt this innovative, versatile product and the techniques you use to create beautiful colour results that are infinitely personal and endlessly changeable. Schwarzkopf Professional developed IGORA Vibrance to reimagine demi-permanent hair colour – helping you deliver more to your clients and creating more opportunities to build lucrative colour business in your salon.

WHAT LLOYDS HAIR DID NEXT… CROWNED THE MOST WANTED SUPREME TEAM FOR A SECOND YEAR RUNNING, LLOYDS HAIR HAS RISEN ABOVE TRAGEDY TO BECOME STRONGER THAN EVER
IT HASN’T BEEN an easy year for Lloyds Hair. Having won the Supreme Team title at the 2017 Most Wanted Awards, it seemed like all was right with the world. And then, as co-owners Danielle Kennedy and Tony Heffernan were preparing their entry for the 2018 awards, Tony’s father died under tragic circumstances. It seemed that entering was out of the question – and yet, the most trying times proved the Lloyds spirit was stronger than ever. “The day after we lost Tony’s father, Tom, I went into the salon to see what had to be organised to allow me to be away for a while,” Danielle explains. “When I got there I realised there was nothing to organise. Our staff had all come together the evening before, people had cancelled holidays and changed hours to ensure everything was covered. They told me that morning: ‘We’ve got this.’” And they did. The salon carried on in such a way that Danielle struggles to put into words. “It was a feeling that as
38
LloydsTemplate.indd 1
a group we are all in this together, and we all want the same outcome; a feeling that when one team member goes down, the rest of us will all pull together to pick up the slack and make sure we keep this show on the road.” This sense of compassion is obvious in so much of the work done by the Lloyds Hair team. The salon was one of the first to take part in Beauty in All Its Forms, a joint initiative between ALFAPARF Milano and Down Syndrome Ireland. “We offered work placements to participants in our area, and it’s been such a positive experience as we met Our John – who now works with us every Thursday,” says Danielle. “No-one is in a bad mood when Our John’s here, he’s a beam of light who brings us all together.” For the past two years the walk-in salon has taken part in Junior Achievement Ireland’s LEAP project, which is a not-for-profit organisation that teaches children in disadvantaged areas practical life skills and opens them
CREATIVE HEAD IRELAND

up to career options. Members of the Lloyds team go into schools and discuss business ideas with young people, working together on projects outside of the salon. And the Annual Breast Cancer Fundraiser is a fixture of the Lloyds calendar, bringing the salon together with a common goal. The team works for donations, and has so far raised nearly €15,000 for Waterford Breast Cancer Support Group. “The rewards are immeasurable. It strengthens our bonds, which makes our salon an even better place to work, it motivates us all and makes us feel good,” Danielle adds. Feeling good is imperative to the Lloyds lifestyle. Positivity Post-Its are displayed to remind staff of their greatness, and regular pizza nights are an essential opportunity for getting things off their chest. Then there’s the Team Wellness Programme, which provides support from an outside expert, covering stress, anxiety management and cognitive behaviour therapy. It’s compulsory for all trainees to attend at least once a year, but all team members are encouraged to take part. “We originally came up with the concept to help the team deal with the general stresses of salon life – let’s face it, salons can be very stressful – and
it has had a hugely positive effect on how we communicate with each other,” adds Danielle. After such challenging times, Danielle and Tony were unsure whether to enter the Most Wanted Awards in 2018, but in the end made the decision to do it for the team. “After everything my head wasn’t in the game to do the entry, but I owed it to them – this is the one award that we enter as a team,” Danielle says. “I always felt that if I wasn’t there, as a day-to-day part of the team, then things would falter – but I know now through heart-breaking circumstances that that’s not true. It’s how we function as a group that makes us a Supreme Team.”

IT’S A DIFFICULT TIME to be a salon owner in Ireland. A whole host of nuisances mean that, unless you have what it takes to entice clients into parting with their hard-earned cash, your salon could be at risk of closure. ‘Black market’ hairdressers advertise themselves on social media as freelance stylists and target your clients – some of whom may well be evading tax and overheads to offer low prices and undercut reputable salons – often doing a bad or even unsafe job in the process. According to an article published in the Irish Independent in December last year, black market trading is estimated to cost the Irish economy close to €2.5bn a year, with hairdressers being prominent offenders. Add in the new VAT hike for the hospitality industry that will force above board salons to increase their prices, and it’s easy to see that if you don’t offer top services then you could be in trouble. A Local Data Company survey on retail in the UK also revealed more salons offering solely hairdressing were closing than opening – it made for stark reading.
STAYING POSITIVE
But it’s not all bad news, salons offering other services with hair – such as beauty – were increasing. So it’s clear that diversifying services is making an impact. A ‘New Year, new you’ mentality is taking hold of your clients this January – so why not harness some of that positivity for your salon? The easiest way to give your salon a new lease of life is to work with what
you’re already good at, so take your existing services to the next level. Your salon already does colour – but do you offer the best colour in your area? “Gone are the days of just getting a basic tint and cut during a salon visit,” says Ciara Conway, owner of La Mode salons in Dublin and Co. Meath. “Clients now want bespoke, tailored colour where you can create the exact look they want, while always maintaining healthy hair. At La Mode, we are doing more and more bespoke colouring services where our clients are having very in-depth consultations and telling us exactly what they are looking for, using social media references.” So, how can you make sure you’re the best colourist around? It’s all down to the right education. “Over the past two years we have invested heavily in training so that our professional skills are the best they can be in colouring and balayage,” explains Ciara. “We have been to London to go to Not Another Academy’s Perfect Bleed course,

Offering a luxurious treatment menu can also go hand-in-hand with your new and improved colouring services, as clients have become much more aware of the damage that certain chemical processes can cause. “We installed luxury recliner chairs in our backwash area to enable our clients to lie back and really relax while having a treatment,” says Lorraine Martin, managing director of Revo Hair & Beauty in Cork. “Additional services result in an increase in salon increase revenue – even though the profit margin might only seem slight, it’s the extra services that will encourage your clients to return.” Ciara Conway agrees, and suggests colour additives as a way to plump up your bills and maintain healthy hair. “Olaplex is hugely popular and we ensure we use it with all of our colour clients, therefore increasing each colour bill. We also introduced the amazing SOS treatment Semí Dí Líno by ALFAPARF Milano, which is an in-between colour treatment that is one of our best-sellers – the results are amazing.” If you’re feeling ambitious, adding a whole new dimension to your salon is a great way to get new customers through the door and spending. John Hickey, operations director of The Greene Room in Co. Clare, realised that there was a market for helping those with scalp concerns. So he turned it into a cornerstone of his business. “We found that our clients’ sensitivity was increasing and they were looking to their hair professionals for reasons and support to help,” he explains. “So we invested in the Kemon Actyva Trico camera at our Killaloe salon. This allowed us to conduct scalp analysis of each client. To get the maximum
42
SelfImprovement Ireland.indd 3
benefit for our staff and clients from the new technology, we closed our salon for a day so that we could train with it.” Sometimes new services can disrupt what feels normal to your salon, so it’s important to have the time and space to make your clients have a truly wonderful experience. “We understand that some clients might not be comfortable with a camera examining their hair follicles while on the salon floor, so initially we tried to limit the scalp analysis to early in the week,” says John. “However, as we were planning our move into our second salon, in Co. Tipperary, we were adamant that we would have a private room. This provides a more intimate consultation space and we have since added a private room at our Killaloe salon for the same reason.”
EXTEND YOUR OFFERING
Hair extensions are another way to grow your salon, and with their increasing popularity they can draw in a whole new range of clients. “Clients are accepting the fact that extensions are no longer purely for length but a great way of adding volume to their natural hair,” says Emma Leung, owner of Kelly Leung Hair Design in Malahide. “We have three certified Great Lengths stylists in our salon and we do between six and 10 heads

of extensions each week, making extensions a healthy part of our growing business. Our clients range from age 18 to 70 – younger people are going for a full head of extensions and more mature ladies are using them to thicken and fill out the hair, particularly around the sides.” The more services you can add to your salon, the more money and clients you’ll entice – after all, in such busy times, clients greatly appreciate everything that makes their lives a little easier. “Over the past few years we have listened to our hair clients and realised that they want everything in a one-stop-shop,” says Mohamed Alkurd, managing director of L’Ombré salon group in Dublin. “Now we have five combined hair and beauty salons. In the New Year we will be opening up a skin clinic where our experts will be offering laser hair removal, Botox, filler injections and microblading, as there is a lot of demand for these treatments. Our salons are open seven days a week and do early starts and late evenings to accommodate all of our clients.” “Our main goal was to accommodate a variety of services under one roof,” says Lorraine Martin. “Not only can you come to Revo Hair & Beauty to have your hair cut and coloured, we also have a nail, brow and lash bars and a designated make-up area – our most-requested service is the hair and makeup package for clients attending events.” Emma Leung agrees – in an age of social media and immediate trends, clients know what they want, and they want it as soon as possible. “Adding new services and keeping on top of current hair styling trends is vital in this industry – innovation is key! We have recently added express services to our menu such as flash colour and shine treatments. As people are getting busier, we think it’s important to offer a service to clients who are under time constraints, so they can still have their hair done and feel good without spending hours in the salon.”
THE RIGHT ENVIRONMENT
And it’s worth investing in the salon environment they’ll be spending time in. “The New Year is a good time to take an inventory of your salon,” says Michael
Gainfort of Gainfort Salon Design. “January and February are traditionally quiet months so schedule a refit and keep disruption to your business at a minimum. Seek professional advice and consider hiring specialists who can oversee your refit from start to finish – perhaps you could even manage a New Year break and leave them to it!” The latest interiors trends take a less is more approach that is both stylish and timeless. “We have seen ‘white space’ trending,” adds Michael. “Clean and pristine white decor lets the colours shine where it really matters – your clients’ hair! Natural looks are also popular – clients and staff feel at peace with the environment using natural materials such as stone and wood.” If you don’t have the budget for a full refit, then some new Maletti furniture can offer a change of scene and brighten up tired interiors. He continues: “Styling stations are now on the move. Traditionally on the wall, salons are choosing freestanding, low-level stations that create social hubs for the salon and give clients a new perspective.” Make 2019 the year that you step up your game, and by the end of it you’ll have new skills, clients and services. Forget difficult – it’s an exciting time to be a salon owner after all!

. Maverick. Creative. Icon Eugene Souleiman chats with Creative HEAD Ireland about connecting with designers, being crowned Most Wanted Hair Icon 2018 and his enduring punk spirit
“In a weird n a n i m ’ I y a w experimental . r e e r a c y m f o t r pa I’m a bit nuts, aren’t I?!” 2018
EUGENE SOULEIMAN IS NOT one to settle for the predictable. As one of the most revered session stylists working at Fashion Week and in editorial today, as well as in his role as global director of care and styling for Wella Professionals, he’s perpetually pushing boundaries. Whether it’s using accessories in unusual ways or placing off-centre details to provide impact, it’s an indelible signature, one which saw him crowned Hair Icon at the 2018 Most Wanted Awards. “I was a bit humbled, to be honest,” he admits of the win. “To be chosen by people that are knowledgeable, that I respect, was really fantastic. They understand.” His ability to shapeshift hair has made him a seasonal

staple for the likes of experimental designers such as John Galliano, Yohji Yamamoto and Jeremy Scott. What is it that draws him to other boundary-pushing creatives? “I always go for the more complicated person,” he says. “In a weird way I’m in a experimental part of my career. I’m a bit nuts, aren’t I?!” For Eugene, it’s all about the character, the story. Galliano is a kindred spirit, maybe it’s something to do with both of them being South East London boys (Eugene is from Woolwich; John from Peckham). For the Maison Margiela Couture show in July 2017, Galliano envisioned a woman running late who jumps straight out of the shower and into

her clothes. Eugene took the wet-look hair brief one step further by suggesting that they add whisked-up shampoo suds, as if she hadn’t even finished rinsing. “For me it’s about finding that little detail that’s really subtle and just turning it into something else,” he explains. It’s signature elements like these that have kept Eugene at the forefront of Fashion Week, year after year. “I think my work’s quite twisted, in a funny kind of way. It’s putting elements together which are quite impossible,” he says. “That’s the challenge for me. I’m very much about the idea – or a feeling.” Touching on his experimental, punk-ish attitude towards hair, Eugene considers why his styling is standing out all the
more now. While he doesn’t think it’s an age thing, it is “a demographic moment”. He explains: “Everyone I know who is truly creative is older – because they were punks. That was when there was nothing and they had to make something from nothing.” But with social media shining an ever-present spotlight on up-and-coming talent, perhaps those coming through the ranks are playing it too safe, knowing so many eyes are watching? Eugene isn’t completely convinced. “They just don’t want to take that risk, and it’s such a shame because there’s no reward if there’s no risk, but it’s a heightened fear of failure on a public level,” he says. “I don’t have that – at the end of the day, I can say I tried.”

“The story behind this was a romantic entanglement of a young lady who’s run away. She’s very beautiful, she fell asleep in a forest when it was raining and this is how she woke up. I just love this hairstyle – it feels quite cinematic, it moves really well and it reacts with the environment. It’s romantic, it’s dark, it’s gothic. It’s elegant but raw.”
“When I look at what John Galliano does and his philosophy, it’s very simple: he doesn’t care who wears his clothes as long as they feel amazing in them. Some of the looks were just haircuts. With John’s shows everyone is treated in an individual way. So when you’re doing a show for John and you’ve got 32 models, you’re doing 32 shows.”
“This look was inspired by a single dreadlock. It’s graphic, it’s textured, it’s fibrous. We had to get hair into its most porous state so when we touched it, it stayed exactly where we want it to. I wanted it to feel almost medieval, like it could have been worn by knights. Thom offers such an amazing platform, he does things with unusual proportions which are quite twisted.”

YOUTH
CREATING OPPORTUNITY FOR talented young hairdressers, TIGI’s Inspirational Youth project is in its 14th year, taking stylists on a life-changing journey to develop creativity and talent. The 10 members of the 2018 team gathered their skills and creativity for an intimate hair show in London’s Café de Paris. Hosted by Anthony Mascolo, TIGI founder and international artistic director, it was the culmination of an intense training week in classic and advanced cut and colouring, session styling, future fashion forecasting, presentation skills and – the highlight of the week – a model casting and photoshoot. First up was a presentation from the TIGI Creative Team entitled Artwork, before the Inspirational Youth team unveiled their models, all sporting both TIGI copyright©olour and Copyright Create ranges. It was a TIGI family affair, with key mentors – European creative director, Akos Bodi; global technical creative director, Christel Lundqvist; Warren Boodaghians, TIGI Academy global technical creative director, and TIGI European session director, Maria Kovacs – all taking to the stage alongside the team.
