In 1909 Eugene Schueller invented a safe professional hair colour, and in doing so created L’Oréal Professionnel Paris – a brand that would always focus its expertise and research on professional hairdressers, a trade that Eugene considered an art form. When he started out Eugene was supported by 50 hairdressers, testing his formulas, assessing product performance and participating in workshops. Today, more than 1.5 million hairdressers around the world are part of the L’Oréal Professionnel Paris community. Now, more than ever, hairdressers are a crucial part of the community, you only had to see the clients flocking back to their stylists after the first lockdown to know that. Working together with L’Oréal Professionnel Paris, you can achieve the kind of physical and emotional transformations that boost self-confidence and pride in your clients. Isn’t that what being a hairdresser is all about?

Seal this Smoky Hair service with Serie Expert Vitamino Color Acidic Sealer from L’OrÊal Professionnel Paris. This luxurious liquid in-salon treatment locks in colour and delivers a top coat of shine right after application. After the Smoky Hair service, shampoo the hair twice and apply the Acidic Sealer to the mid-lengths and ends. Emulsify and rinse immediately. The Acidic Sealer treatment has PH 4.5 technology, meaning the hair is rebalanced after the colour service and the colour is locked in for longer. When used with the Vitamino Color haircare range, colour is protected from fading for up to eight weeks.*

The edit THE NEWS AND KNOW-HOW FROM YOUR INDUSTRY
NATIONAL HAIRDRESSING APPRENTICESHIP MAKES DEBUT THE NEW NATIONAL Hairdressing Apprenticeship will begin rolling out across a number of locations in Dublin from January, following a collaboration with the City of Dublin Education and Training Board (CDETB). Heralded as a game-changer for the hairdressing industry in Ireland, it will provide apprentices who complete the programme with a Level 6 Major Award on the National Framework of Qualifications, with certification awarded by Quality and Qualifications Ireland. Aimed at school leavers who have completed the Leaving Certificate, early school leavers who have at least two years’ full-time salon experience and mature applicants who wish to pursue a career in hairdressing, the three-year programme will offer training on a day-release basis with students placed in the salon environment for four days a week under the guidance of a salon mentor. The programme has been developed as a new statutory apprenticeship by a consortium of industry and education providers, with Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board as the lead co-ordinating provider. Education and Training Boards in Cork, Kerry, Waterford and Wexford, Cavan and Monaghan are also on board to support the delivery of the apprenticeship. Employers who wish to register an apprentice must first be approved by SOLAS, the Further Education and Training Authority, with an Apprenticeship Incentivisation Scheme available for employers.

CONSUMERS WANT GREENER PRODUCTS A WHOPPING 91 per cent of consumer want less packaging with beauty products, while 88 per cent want refill options. Those are some of the findings from the British Beauty Council’s new sustainability report, which calls on the industry to collaborate through what it calls a Sustainable Beauty Coalition. According to The Courage to Change findings, consumers’ top concerns included confusion over which products could be recycled, high use of plastics, cruelty to animals and ocean pollution. Its research found high percentages of interest from consumers in more sustainable initiatives. In response, the report lays out an action plan for a sustainable beauty sector to overcome the issues currently affecting beauty businesses.
98%
of hair and beauty businesses have introduced new ways of communicating with their customers as a result of the pandemic, according to Yell Business. Its report also found 74 per cent of hair and beauty businesses stated that instant messaging is key for business success post Covid-19.

Irish hairdressing comedy to star at Dublin film festival A NEW BIG-SCREEN comedy set in Dublin sees a team of Irish hairdressers becoming local heroes. Deadly Cuts is the directorial debut of writer Rachel Carey and centres on a working-class hair salon where the stylists become unlikely vigilantes and community heroes. Its world premiere will take place at the Dublin International Film Festival (DIFF), where it will close the schedule. The film, backed by Screen Ireland, stars Angeline Ball, Ericka Roe, Lauren Larkin, Shauna Higgins, Victoria Smurfit, Aidan McArdle and Pauline McLynn. DIFF festival director Gráinne Humphreys, said: “We are working hard to curate and deliver a film festival that inspires and engages audiences, presenting the very best of international and Irish films.” DIFF will run from 3 to 14 March, and is planned as a mix of drive-in, cinema and virtual screenings.

What Jaunary and February have in store for... SARAH MASON SARAH MASON PROFESSIONAL
It’s time to put a plan of action into place! January is always about education for my team. I like to take them for three or four full days of learning over the month to prepare them for the year ahead. It is a time where I can enjoy sharing my skill set with them and allow them to move onto the next stage or address any areas in which they may be struggling. I also like to get a feel for the events my team might be interested in, such as Wella TrendVision Awards. I love to sit with an annual planner in January and set out goals for the year.
DAVID CAMPBELL HOUSE OF COLOUR
We have a huge amount planned at House of Colour in the coming months. Our new training initiative, Project 37, is a groundbreaking first for the industry. We are also are finalising more salon expansion plans to grow our group. We are relaunching our wig business and adding Belle Hair Extensions to the salon group. Our new online education platform is near completion and our Salon Survival Kit is ready for our guests to enhance their experience. Also the art team is busy with a national tour which we hope to recommence for our spring/ summer 2021 collection.

#CHedit WHY DID YOU WANT TO BECOME A HAIRDRESSER? When I was younger I was always experimenting with my own hair and loved trying out different cuts, colours and styles. I enjoyed being in a salon environment as a client, so I found a Saturday job. From there I really got an insight into hairdressing and decided that I wanted to pursue it as a career. It’s an art form – I have my tools and a canvas and from there I create something beautiful and unique for each client. While many artists work solo, as hairdressers we work better around other people. Whether it’s the consultation process with every client, or bouncing ideas around with the team, we’re always simultaneously creating and communicating.

WHAT HAVE BEEN YOUR HIGHLIGHTS SO FAR? There have been quite a few! The most significant one so far was joining the team at Marbles Hair & Beauty who have become like family over the past few years. They constantly encourage me to upskill and provide incredible opportunities to learn. Last year I was lucky enough to assist the RUSH Creative Team during its seminars and workshops at the salon. Another proud moment was coming second place in our annual salon competition last year, which gave me the confidence to then enter the L’Oréal Colour Trophy STAR

Award 2020, and I was selected as a finalist. An ongoing highlight for me is having the chance to work on photoshoots and editorial work – I love the creativity and energy. WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN 10 YEARS? I want to be a really well-established stylist. You know the one – everybody has you on speed dial and clients will happily wait until you have a slot because they only want you! Cutting hair is my absolute passion and because the industry is always changing and evolving, I am excited to see where my career will take me. I can see myself involved in education in the salon, imparting my experience and expertise to upcoming stylists, the way my mentors did for me. WHAT WOULD YOUR DREAM HAIR GIG BE? I would love to see my cuts on the cover of fashion magazines like Vogue, Grazia and Elle. I am drawn to – and inspired by – the fashion industry, so to be a collaborator on future trends would be just amazing.

Inside story RAVENS HAIR SALON LIMERICK
The Ravens Hair Salon team dreamed of refurbishing their beloved salon but knew it would be difficult to juggle a closure with the demands of clients. Luckily there was a silver lining to the first lockdown – the time for a complete makeover. Senior stylist turned project manager Sarah Clancy, explains: “When we were forced to shut our doors due to the lockdown we decided to turn a negative into a positive. How lovely would it be to welcome back our amazing staff and clients to a brand-new salon?” Working with interior designer Aoife Tobin from Style So Simple, and carpenter Jeremy Lynch, Sarah mixed old and new. “We changed the floors, repainted the walls and doors, added architraves around the windows, artwork – the list goes on! We kept the ceilings, old chairs, original mirrors and the desk. Some of these items needed a little help like the chairs which were re-upholstered and the front desk, which was given a new covering on the front for a marbled effect.” The new look is completed with geometric wallpaper, glass ball lighting fittings and a little greenery to bring the outside in.

THE COLOUR CLINIC IS OPEN…
THE WIDER INDUSTRY. EVERY MONTH A WELLA PROFESSIONALS COLOUR EXPERT EXAMINES AN ISSUE WHICH AFFECTSEXACTLY HOW CRUCIAL GUSTAV FOUCHE (@GUSTAV_FOUCHE), OWNER OF HIS EPONYMOUS SALON IN LONDON, KNOWS IT IS TO WIN CLIENTS’ TRUST WHEN IT COMES TO PRODUCT RECOMMENDATIONS “We offer a bespoke service to every one of our clients. We believe that each client deserves to feel like a goddess with their own unique style and colour. I draw on my 17 years’ experience and from research of the advancements being made by product brands, to discuss with clients openly and honestly which products will be best for them. “When your client feels truly understood during their consultation and trusts in your ability to recommend the perfect products for them, they recognise the value in taking up those recommendations as being the best way to keep their hair healthy and looking fabulous. I find that the best advertisement for a salon is the hair on our clients’ heads, and with the Wella Professionals Color Fresh retail range, that advert can now keep on looking amazing through to their next visit. It can be a daunting decision to change hair colour as it has such a big impact on appearance, so I really love how Color Fresh helps to make trying a new tone seem less scary to the colour-shy. As a true semi-permanent treatment it will fade after a few washes and will wash out completely, giving peace of mind to the client that they are able to go back to their old colour if they want to. “The new Color Fresh Masks are also perfect for giving a dose of deep hydration and topping up either natural, pastel or vivid tones between visits. Combining Color Fresh in-salon treatments with at-home refreshes is an ideal platform to providing the incremental colour changes that keep our clients looking at their best.” 14

LOCKDOWN
THE PAST YEAR HAS BEEN FILLED WITH ACTS OF HEROISM, GREAT AND SMALL. EVERY SALON HAS SOMEONE THEY’VE RELIED ON TO GET ORGANISED, GET ATTENTION OR JUST TO KEEP SPIRITS HIGH. MEET OUR STARS OF THE SHUTDOWNS… MARGARET O’ROURKE DOHERTY CHIEF EXECUTIVE OF HABIC, AND NETWORK MANAGER OF IMAGE SKILLNET
“A huge hero of mine is Margaret O’Rourke Doherty,” admits one nominator. “She and her team at Image Skillnet have helped fund so much, from back-to-work programmes to Covid-19 training. She has been incredible.” Margaret and her team did a huge amount of lobbying for Covid-19 financial support. This began as early as February, with submissions to the Low Pay Commission and stressing to government the reasons that salons should be taken seriously during the fight against the pandemic. The ‘Economic Impact Report’ for Habic by economist Jim Power, published in July, was an important first for Irish salons, too. “It’s groundbreaking to have a value on the industry after all these years,” admits Margaret. “It was great for us and useful in conversations stressing to the government: ‘We’re really valuable and we can prove it’.” As vice-chair of the Irish SME Association, she was also involved with the July Jobs Stimulus, a €7.4 billion stimulus package announced by the government. Being part of this lobby group helped her give the industry’s case more reach.

CIARÁN NEVIN
CIARÁN NEVIN HAIR SALON, TERENURE, CO. DUBLIN Ciarán has been praised for his work in ensuring Irish salons were not Level 5 restricted during the first lockdown. “If it wasn’t for Ciarán we would have been closed for longer and more stress would have been caused,” said one nominator. “He is very quiet about his involvement in the industry’s recovery but he truly played a selfless and integral part.” Ciarán — together with Richard and Paul Dromgoole, directors of Zeba Hairdressing — drew up a protocol for government to show how hairdressers could reopen, work safely and keep customers reassured. “We looked at the industry in Finland, Austria, Denmark and Germany, where salons were reopening after as little as six weeks and said: ‘We can do this.’” The protocol was ready by the end of April. He also made the point that European salons were allowed to reopen with Level 1 or 2 restrictions, so hairdressing was as safe as many essential service providers. “Salons are a very safe place to be, even during this pandemic. In my salon, we had about 4,000 visitors between the first and second lockdown with no reported case, including among our staff.”
DANIELLE KENNEDY
PRESIDENT OF THE IRISH HAIR FEDERATION (IHF) Danielle, along with her IHF vice-president Lisa Eccles, were the most popular nominees and the faces and voices of a successful campaign to keep hairdressing in the national conversation. “We were very conscious that the salon industry can be overlooked or lumped in with retail, so before the first lockdown the Federation started a campaign to get on the government’s radar.” So began a busy 15 weeks of campaigning, media work and developing the guidelines to get salons back open. “Our industry was really proactive. All the groups came together and we were the first industry to produce guidelines and communicate them effectively to the government.” The IHF also reached out to salons, Danielle says: “We were lucky that the industry was behind what we were doing, it added a lot of weight. We even had other industries coming to us asking how we did our guidelines and used them to get reopened.” Managing director of The Collective by Lloyds in Waterford and Wexford and a Most Wanted Legend, Danielle’s hard work meant members were well prepared for the second lockdown. Her efforts are widely appreciated, with one nominator explaining: “Danielle has highlighted the importance of hairdressers and salons in our communities. She and Lisa have become leading voices for the industry. She makes herself available to absolutely everyone and ensures hairdressers get the recognition they deserve.”
WAYNE LLOYD
PRESIDENT OF IRISH HAIRDRESSING COUNCIL Founder of his eponymous salons in Co. Cork, Wayne Lloyd became president of the Irish Hairdressing Council at the beginning of January this year but distinguished himself as Sean Taaffe’s vice-president during the 2020 lockdowns. He fielded some 30 calls a day during the first lockdown from concerned people at every level of the industry, and communicated regularly with the government in order to get everyone back to work as soon as possible. Nominators also made special mention his work on social media, making online events of his Instagram Live interviews with 55 of the world’s best hairdressers, including Sean Taaffe, Vivienne McKinder and Jean-Baptiste Mazella. Wayne notes a rare highlight in a very difficult year: “The lockdown made people appreciate the positive effect that salons have on their communities and that visiting them can really change how they feel about themselves.” All this, and he scooped gold at the OMC Stylist Awards 2020 in the Ladies Trend Cut category during the second lockdown. Not all heroes wear capes… although their clients do.

2020
DON’T STOP
BELIEVING!
GOODBYE 2020 - WHAT A YEAR THAT WAS. AMONG THE MANY NIGHTS OUT WE SHOULD HAVE BEEN ENJOYING WAS A LEGENDARY GATHERING OF EPIC TALENTS: THE MOST WANTED AND THE IT LIST GRAND FINAL! Alas, it was not meant to be… not in 2020, anyway – but we’re still celebrating, especially because this is a very special year for Most Wanted – it’s the competition’s 20th birthday, no less! We’ve come a long way since that first Grand Final, held at lunchtime in London restaurant Sugar Reef, with just 75 guests and Radio 1 DJ Nemone hosting. That’s because, like our finalists over the years, we had buckets of ambition – to shine a spotlight on the greatest talents operating in British hairdressing. The session artists who influence global trends and brands… The salon owners who build brilliant high street businesses… The image makers… The ground-breakers… And the everyday stylists whose skills and compassion transform lives on a daily basis. As the years went by, Most Wanted grew – bigger venues, starrier hosts. It swept through Shoreditch Town Hall, Banqueting House, the Royal Courts of Justice, Guildhall, the Natural History Museum, Tate Modern and Printworks. Celebrities Jimmy Carr, Keith Lemon, Katherine Ryan and Jack Whitehall have all presided over the festivities. And it was in 2010 that the Grand Final went major, with the introduction of The It list – celebrating the best pro hair talents aged 30 or under. Most Wanted and The It List, we salute you. And it salutes you right back – we’re committed to celebrating our stars of 2020… even if that happens in 2021. You can’t stop this party – so let’s follow the journey so far, and meet the finalists battling it out for those coveted titles!

• Reconfigure space where possible to meet the rules, which is 2m with social distancing or 1m with a divider and faceguard. If possible, move chairs further apart to create more space between styling chairs. This can be a challenge if styling

positions are fixed – you may have to take a position out altogether – but simple changes can give you more flexibility. These include having a wider, seamless mirror, freestanding mirrors or moveable styling stations. • Could moving the reception desk create more space? Having the reception in position creates an important and welcoming impression, but clients will understand if it has to be sacrificed for safety reasons. • Don’t just move things around without a thought process behind it; you need to maintain an ambience and create the

AN OASIS OF CALM Research published by L’Oréal Professional Products Division after the first lockdown found a whopping 59 per cent of Irish women were feeling reluctant about returning to salons due to anxiety over health and safety. Expressing what a calm, comforting haven your business is has never been more important. We can all agree that during this pandemic both clients and salons are looking for certainty and good communication. Hession Hairdressers in Dublin has been part of its community for more than 50 years and owner Paul Hession was keen to make his salons in Clontarf and Drumcondra safe yet restorative environments. “There’s a perspex screen around the reception desk but the customer experience is still very personal. We have all the safety measures in place but the atmosphere is still soft and welcoming,” he says. “Clients are treated to both therapeutic scents and sounds. We have aromatherapy scents piped through the salon to suit the hour of the day and promote relaxation. We’ve also chosen new music, the beats are slower and the sound is more chilled out. We’ve had staff meetings to discuss how to deal with upset or tense customers. We also have a private room upstairs where we have taken particularly nervous clients, the team is very tuned in.” For Mark Doherty, owner of Sitstil in Dublin’s citycentre, the salon has always been a luxurious retreat from urban life, a self-described “salon with a soul”. He explains: “At Sitstil we are keeping a close eye on all developments relating to the spread of the virus and going above and beyond the government regulations.” This commitment to safety hasn’t changed Mark’s belief that a great consultation is about trust and consistent, honest enthusiasm. Mark and his team connect with the client on a truly individual level, getting to know how the last year has changed them. Salon music is chosen to calm the mood and the salon’s homepage opens with a video of staff at work in safe yet tranquil surroundings. “We work flexi-hours in order to accommodate our clients’ needs. Unfortunately, we no longer offer refreshments to clients … but we’ll be back with champagne for everyone as soon as possible!”
right mood. Clients have been deprived of their visits to the salon, and when they do come, everything has changed. People value the time they spend there, so manage your environment and consider how and where everything needs to go. • Fix a lighting rail with a spotlight system, so you can move and position your lighting as you move styling positions. Post Covid-19, it can serve as a flexible and effective lighting feature. • Consider introducing new services that are not space-intensive, can enhance the customer’s appointment, raise the quality of service and help maximise income. Takara Belmont’s Spa Mist II
CREATIVE HEAD IRELAND
042-045_Safe SpaceIRE.indd 2
and Micro Mist mobile processors, for example, improve colour and treatment services, as well as introducing spa-style hand treatments. The Roller Ball F processor from Takara Belmont halves colour processing time so you can see more clients. These innovations can be moved to the customer at their styling station, limiting the amount of walking around in the salon, which minimises close contact and reassures clients. • Interpersonal exchange between clients and the team is key. The importance of a salon visit to clients has no doubt increased, so you need to raise the bar and find ways to make it extra special.

Sean Taaffe Hair & Beauty
SAFETY FIRST “What do women want to see more of from salons to increase confidence?” asks Lucie Seffens, digital engagement & communications strategy director at L’Oréal Professional Products Division. “Visual reassurance.” Cyril Morgan Hair in Limerick is known for working with cancer and alopecia sufferers so created a literal safe space area in-salon, ‘Inner Space’. “This area of the salon can be used for vulnerable clients who are at high risk or who may be nervous about being in a salon setting. Inner Space can also be used by two members of the same family or bubble.” He and his team have also streamlined safety measures to ensure clients feel secure without taking from the traditional experience. “When a client arrives at the salon, we have a closed-off porch inside the door, where they hang up their own coats. Our reception team then takes their temperature and leads them to their station, where they are asked to fill out a contact tracing form. After their appointment, the client disposes of their gown themselves in our laundry basket. All of our team have completed Barbicide hygiene training too.” Sean Taaffe, owner of the Sean Taafe Hair Group in Kerry, installed a one-way system through all of his salon’s and turned to technology to exceed the required safety measures and make staff ’s efforts visible. “We use a new app called Count Me,” he says. “It tracks a client’s journey through the salon, from their allocated seat in the waiting area onwards. It knows when an area needs to be sanitised and when it was last cleaned. A QR code on each chair stops anyone from sitting on a chair that has not yet been cleaned. It’s a very visible and reassuring process.”
CLEAN AND SERENE Brands have produced an astonishing array of items to respond to the pandemic, which are now much more widely available and affordable. The iconic blue of Disicide has never been a more welcome sight, with staff safe in the knowledge that its intensive sterilising formula will keep their tools clean. The formulas in all of the products are waterbased, alcohol- and solvent-free, and are recognised as hospital-grade disinfectant. It also launched its Plus+ range last summer, which can be used on all water-resistant and porous surfaces as well as textiles and leather. Hair Tools is now offering a free Disicide education course online, sharing best practices and methods for top standard hygiene, resulting in a certificate you can display in your salon. Such visual cues as certificates are hugely important for both clients and staff. L’Oréal Professional Product Division’s Hygiene and Safety e-learning training module keeps you and your staff up-to-date with the best hygiene practices in the salon, and results in a certificate you can proudly display.

SAFETY SCREENS TECHNOLOGY CAN HELP YOU KEEP YOUR SPACE SAFE AS POSSIBLE – YOU MIGHT NOT EVEN REALISE JUST HOW MUCH YOUR SALON SOFTWARE WILL ALLOW YOU KEEP ON TOP OF IT ALL. FOR EXAMPLE, SALON BY PREMIER SOFTWARE PROVIDES KEY FEATURES TO TAKE THE HEADACHES OUT OF COMPLIANCE
APPOINTMENT-READY SMS
Once staff are ready for each client’s treatment, they can send clients an SMS to let them know. Salon lets staff set up the text message and send this through the client card or arrival screen. SMS is also useful to warn recently visited clients who may have been in contact with someone with symptoms.
MEDICAL QUESTIONNAIRES
Create medical questionnaires that include questions related to Covid-19, such as if the client has had a recent loss of taste, a new and persistent cough, or a high temperature. Salon connects with Online by Premier Software to give clients access to the questionnaire online. This enables clients to update their details prior to their next visit, keeping everyone safe.
SOCIAL DISTANCING TIME SLOTS
Salon and Online allow you to lock booking slots to set times of day, limiting the amount of people in the salon at any one time. These time slots can also be lengthened to fit in sanitation between appointments. Staff rotas can be staggered to avoid any crossover between teams.
MOBILE ARRIVALS
With a Premier Mobile licence, you can use a phone or tablet to register when a client has arrived onsite for their appointment and review medical questionnaires. This means staff can do so from their own device, without the risk of crosscontamination or contact with other surfaces.
ONLINE PAYMENTS
Using Online with Salon, you can provide clients access to bookings online. Enabling clients to pay for their appointments there and then not only eliminates crowding at reception, but also demonstrates a commitment to their booking.
WILL TALKING ABOUT SUICIDE CAUSE IT? That’s the tough question asked in the BarberTalk education from The Lions Barber Collective, the Most Wanted Award-winning initiative that aims to train barbers and stylists to recognise signs of poor mental health and potentially suicidal thoughts, and help them support clients in need. With the after-effects of the pandemic, lockdowns, furloughs, job losses and resulting impact on family life, it’s expected that there will be a mental health crisis in the UK and Ireland; the likes of which we’ve never seen before. And as a stylist or barber, you could be hearing up to a dozen stories every working day of clients’ own experiences. Now is the time to ensure you and your team are ready to handle any difficult conversations. Through the training, you’ll learn four key actions:
• RECOGNISE – what signs should we be looking for? The key word is change – change of appearance, in behaviour, in booking patterns.
• ASK – try direct questions that we often
COUNT ON US
Count Me was developed in Kerry by local technology company TB Smart Solutions and is a great way to monitor interactions and hygiene in your salon in a way customers can see. Managing director Peter Dunlea, who says the app was originally conceived for restaurants, keeps client comfort and privacy at the heart of his team’s work. The system helps businesses manage sanitisation, contact tracing, staff accountability, reporting, data storage and management to help keep the salon environment safe for its staff and customers. Its records can also protect salons against consumer litigation. The app gives a full history of a client’s journey through the salon, who they interacted with and what happened when. If it emerges someone has been infected, it provides a record of any staff member or client who has been within two metres of that person. As they move through the building, client locations are monitored by staff using QR codes where necessary. Contact details can be accessed only by request from the relevant authorities for tracing purposes and details and they are automatically deleted after 28 days.

avoid for fear of the answer. Avoid the generic “how are you?”. If you suspect something is wrong, try to ask open questions such as “how are you feeling?” or “how has Covid-19 been for you?”
• LISTEN – let your client talk without
interrupting them, and listen with empathy and without judgement. Really pay attention to what they’re saying.
• HELP – you are not behind that chair to
diagnose or be a therapist, but you can signpost your clients to a number of national bodies, charities and health organisations once you’ve identified that they need help. For more, visit thelionsbarbercollective.com
