The edit THE NEWS AND KNOW-HOW FROM YOUR INDUSTRY
CLIENTS ARE NEGLECTING
THEIR HAIR ON
HOLIDAY
More than three-quarters (76 per cent) of women forget to take products that protect hair from the sun with them on holiday, according to research commissioned by hair and scalp brand Philip Kingsley. The study has shown the extent of hair damage caused by summer holidays, with 26 per cent of women saying sunshine was a reason for their hair’s poor health, and 25 per cent blaming chlorine in swimming pools. A further 19 per cent reported this led to excessive frizziness and 13 per cent of women experienced colour fade. With summer in full swing, it’s clear clients can benefit from being educated about how to care for their hair. Anabel Kingsley, a trichologist at Philip Kingsley, said: “If your client mentions that they are going on summer holiday, it’s a great chance to bring up summer hair care. Let your client know that their hair can burn just like their skin – and the two should be given similar care when they are out-and-about in the sun.” And stocking your shelves with products designed to help protect hair against harmful rays and damaging water is an excellent way to boost retail. “Many of your clients will already be aware of the damage that UV rays can cause to their hair, but they do not know which products to use,” she added. “As people are coming into your salon to make their hair look its very best, they will be open to products that help them to maintain the appearance and health of their strands.” HEAD ONLINE and learn new techniques from featured artist Robert Cromeans at creativeheadmag.com/education

Phorest gives top marks PHOREST SALON SOFTWARE has announced the winners of the Phorest Client Experience Awards, for salons keeping their average client ratings at least 4 out of 5 stars for the past year. Ronan Perceval, chief executive of Phorest, said: “We would like to congratulate all the winners for their continued quality of work – these awards are a testament to the high standards set out.” Phorest has also recently launched the #30Days2Grow challenge, an initiative which aims to help salons grow their businesses and their average bills through a series of daily tasks and challenges that participants will carry out over the course of the month.
I’ve just taken on the role of president of the new Hairdressing Council for Ireland and am seeking new regional vice-presidents. We’ve just rebranded the salon back to Bridget Haren Hair and Beauty, and have launched our website. And this month we will be starting a marketing campaign with our new computer system.

Perhaps the biggest complaint from colour clients is the fade between appointments – they need something to keep colour looking beautiful. Well, we think Kérastase might be onto something. It’s upgraded its Reflection range and has introduced new Touche Chromatique, the first ‘ink-in-care’ for coloured hair. Available in four tones – Cool Blond, Cool Brown, Copper and Red – they help to revive colour between appointments for customised shade supremacy. COLOUR CONSULTATION INSPIRATION, INNOVATION AND BUSINESS BOOSTING IDEAS TO MAKE COLOUR BIG IN YOUR SALON
IN ASSOCIATION WITH
SPOTLIGHT ON SUMMER
ARE YOU #SUMMERHAIR READY? WITH BEACH SEASON around the corner, now is the time to take your clients a shade lighter or try a new must-have hue in their hair. We know that clients worry about damage during the lightening process, so ensure you protect and strengthen
their hair with Smartbond. Take a look at the new Blonde Edit service menu by L’Oréal Professionnel, which showcases the new must-have looks for the season. So get your clients #summerhair ready, right now!
BRONZED BLONDE

BLUSHED BLONDE by TONI&GUY, LONDON
This is an ultra-soft freehand service that will give your client that understated ‘been on vacation’ bronzed glow. Honey caramel tones have never been so en vogue!
This is a fresher take on the platinum white trend – the crisp champagne hue is a softer and more wearable shade for clients. Truly bright and beautiful!
This offers your clients just a hint of rose, a sophisticated alternative to pink hair that is taking Instagram by storm this summer. Just remember the hashtag #blushedblonde!
HOW TO GIVE A SMART CONSULTATION YOU KNOW HOW important the consultation is – it’s where an incredible 90 per cent of sales happen. But, while 97 per cent of stylists say they perform a full consultation, only seven per cent of women say they get one* – what’s going wrong? It’s the key time in the salon to understand your client’s needs and the perfect moment to introduce Smartbond. And you
18
018-019_Colour Consultation JulyAug.indd 1
can do this in three steps:
SMART Question – start with an open question to discover their true feelings. “How do you feel about the condition of your hair?”. If your client is happy, Smartbond would be perfect to protect hair during all technical services. But for those who are unhappy, Smartbond can hold the key to softer, stronger, shinier hair.
SMART Sell Have a short script to tell your clients about Smartbond. Here’s an example: “L’Oréal Professionnel Smartbond is an innovative service, which I recommend adding to your colour today. It prevents breakage and protects your hair from the inside out. SMART Close End with a closed question: “Shall I add Smartbond to today’s service?”

IF YOUR CLIENT has chosen to have a Smartbond service, don’t forget to recommend Smartbond Step 3 – if they use it once a week at home, they’ll see all those fabulous benefits last even longer! It’s a little insurance policy for great-looking hair.
3) Increase in-salon visibility: Make Smartbond visible at every step of their salon journey. Start with an eye-catching window display and think lookbooks and service menus inside. And don’t forget to have Smartbond Step 3 on show in the retail area.

Inside story THAIRAPY, DUBLIN
Building a salon from scratch may sound daunting, but for Vic Ball, owner of Thairapy Salon in Dublin, it allowed him the freedom to create a space that was exactly what he wanted. “Thairapy was a new build, so the unit was just a shell when we started. Starting with a blank canvas allowed me to put in my own ideas.” And he’s created a salon that’s simple, classic, stylish and never OTT. As a newbie to salon ownership, Vic enlisted the help of salon designer Michael Gainfort to help him complete the project in just two months. A standout section of the salon is the retail area, which puts products front and centre. And the feedback has been nothing but positive: “Clients love it, and always comment on how beautiful the salon is – they must be telling the truth because they keep coming back!”

SHARING THE SECRETS OF SUCCESS TO HELP YOU ACHIEVE YOUR GOALS
BUILDING SUCCESS WE TALK TO JOHN COSS, OWNER OF JOHN COSS CREATIVE HAIR, ABOUT HOW HE STARTED OUT AND HOW HE REDISCOVERED HIS CREATIVITY WITH ALFAPARF MILANO
STARTING OFF
“I started studying a hairdressing course at college because one of my friends was doing it, so I thought it might be a bit of a laugh,” remembers John Coss, owner of John Coss Creative Hair. Fast forward 12 years and he’s in love with a profession that’s always kept him on his toes. “It’s amazing to be able to express myself through my job and constantly meet new people,” he says. Throughout his training in Portlaoise, John always knew where he wanted to go. “Owning my own salon was always the dream,” he explains. “When I opened John Coss Creative Hair it was just me and a barber. Then I hired a junior. Within a year we had six staff members and now we have eight.”
ON COURSE
John couldn’t be happier with his salon, which is located in his hometown of Portlaoise. “It was important to me that it was located there because I’m a home bird and I know everyone,” he says. The salon thrived, but while he was taking care of logistics, John felt that he needed to return to his artistic roots. “For a while I had lost my creative streak because of focusing on business and needed something to
pull me back. Then I heard about the NEXXT GENERATION ARCHITECTS OF DESIGN programme (AOD) from ALFAPARF Milano and I was one of the first people to take part in it.” AOD is an elite education programme aimed at passionate, enthusiastic, talented young stylists, chosen by the team at ALFAPARF Milano for their creativity, enthusiasm and desire to be the best. John adds: “AOD is a mentoring programme – throughout the year we go around and learn from big names such as Sean Taaffe, Wayne Lloyd and Paul Stafford.”
ALWAYS INSPIRING
And the learning isn’t confined to Ireland – with ALFAPARF Milano the world is your oyster. “We get to go to the MOD Academy in Rome and to work with Ramiro Mata in San Sebastian,” he explains. And if you want to show off your talent then you have the opportunity to do so. “When the year is over, we get the chance to try some on stage work. Some people love the idea of being on stage.” John is sure this programme and its mentors can help boost your skills, no matter how much experience you have.

THE BUSINESS EDIT ON THE FRONT LINE IS YOUR RECEPTION WORKING FOR YOUR BUSINESS? IT’S THE FIRST part of your salon that clients see as they come in off the street, but reception areas are often overlooked. Part waiting room, part administration centre, it’s imperative that you give it as much attention as the rest of your business. “First impressions really do count – your reception area gives your clients an immediate indication of the way in which your business is managed,” says Annissa Simmons, marketing manager of Hugh Campbell Group. “Keep it simple so it always looks stylish, professional and welcoming. Ensure the area is always clean and remember that the reception desk is the centrepiece of your salon. Allow ample space between furnishings so it doesn’t look overcrowded.”

WHY DID YOU WANT TO BE A HAIRDRESSER? My sister is five years older than me and she would go into a salon for some part-time work. On the days she couldn’t do it I would go instead – this was my introduction to hairdressing and I was about 14. At school I enjoyed art and I’m interested in different types of colour. A blonde is more than just a blonde, everyone is unique.
This space can also be used to promote new products and services, as clients may wish to have a look around while they wait. “Understanding how this space can be utilised is key. Branding in this area is crucial, so use it to highlight any current special offers or competitions you are running.” adds Annissa. And the staff you employ at reception are as important as the physical space. Susan Hackett, owner of Ravens Hair Salon in Limerick, has always believed that a good front of house team will help forge successful salon-client relationships. “Your receptionist needs to indicate to the client they are here to help them, every step of the way,” she says. “They should play a role in directing the client to the right person for the job – matching up someone with curly hair with the curly hair specialist, for example. Your receptionist can help to build up the trust that is necessary to retain clients.” “They should reassure the client and facilitate the hairdresser from the beginning so they can provide a great experience,” Susan continues. “By keeping everything running smoothly they will maintain a great atmosphere that should run right through your salon.” And a good receptionist will be great at encouraging rebookings and making sure the positive experience continues long after the client has left the salon – which is invaluable for creating repeat customers. Susan adds: “Our receptionist handles follow-up emails to encourage people to come back and also sends out text reminders two days before appointments to help prevent no-shows. This works very well. Our receptionist also contributes posts on social media, which clients love – they see our online presence and want to be part of the Ravens tribe.”
HIGHLIGHTS SO FAR? I went to the Alternative Hair Show in London and was so inspired that when I came home I entered the Trainee Creative Fantasy category at the IHF Hairdressing Championships. I did the hair and the outfit, using origami techniques and I came fourth. I also came fourth in the IHF Trainee Blowdry category, and came third in the Alfaparf Milano Fantastic Hairdresser
Long Hair Stylist Award. I really like avant-garde work. It isn’t what you’d get asked for in the salon! WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN 10 YEARS? I don’t see myself differently exactly – just bigger and better at what I do. I would love to travel more and keep on competing. Denise O’Neill, who owns Rustiq, is an inspiration to me, so are Bridget Haren and
Sean Taaffe. These people have made their businesses successful and are known as amazing hairdressers. WHAT IS YOUR DREAM HAIRDRESSING GIG? I would love to work at London Fashion Week – creating my own work, putting my team together. Or go to New York and work on a showcase there. The atmosphere would be amazing, and I’d enjoy creating new trends and styles.

LIFE LESSONS CLAIRE O’SULLIVAN, OWNER, CLAIRE’S HAIR SALON, WATERGRASSHILL, CO. CORK Enjoy your work. Try not to let the paperwork, bills, stock orders and all the mundane things dampen your passion. Take your time as a stylist to be excited about hair and have separate time to deal with the paperwork. The staff and clients will feel your passion and it will create positivity throughout your salon. Never stop learning! There isn’t a night that goes by when I am not looking at hair, beauty and fashion on some social media site! When I see a new hair trend I simply have to learn how to create it. We use Schwarzkopf Professional – its Essential Looks collections offer the most up-to-date trends we can bring to clients. When the time comes that a new look doesn’t make you want to learn about it, then it’s time to walk away. Regular clients = a steady business. Sometimes, when a business is going from strength to strength, the owner can forget about the clients who were there from the start. Each client should be treated the same as the day they first walked in the door. Never use the dreaded term “same again?” Even if you know they won’t change, they deserve a choice every time they visit your salon. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. You can’t get anywhere without taking risks! Being creative is all about trying new things and this will sometimes lead to errors, so don’t beat yourself up about it, pull yourself back up and move on to the next challenge. Accept that as an owner and a person you will not always be right… but you can always be learning. Teamwork! Salon life is all about the team you have in place. One stylist does not make a salon. It’s about putting together a team that is happy, that works well together and brings specific individual skills. And it’s important to recognise life will move on, so will people in your team and that can be a positive thing, so embrace it. Change is good!

spectrum
The very best of Irish hairdressing came together to celebrate colour and creativity at the L’Oréal Colour Trophy Grand Final 2017. O’Reilly Hall in Dublin was the venue for the 51st final, and it was packed out as host and TV star Vogue Williams took to the stage to introduce the awards’ judges – Siobhan Jones of Headmasters, Nathan Walker of Trevor Sorbie, Chris Williams of Rush, Alan Edwards of Alan Edwards and Guy Kremer of Guy Kremer. After a three course dinner the audience was treated to dazzling catwalk shows, jaw-dropping styling, slick video visuals and even a spot of beatboxing. And Creative HEAD Ireland was there to capture all the action…

Super-stylists Paul Percival and Adam Reed of Percy & Reed, along with Ellenora Dean from the brand, took their unique vision of London street style to Dublin for a one night only exclusive. Inspired by subculture, they created an incredible runway show that was both beautiful and full of attitude. We were bowled over by the giant afros, woven lengths and never-ending ponytails – all set against live beatboxing and neon visuals. If you ever needed proof that hairdressing is at the cutting edge, then this was it…

Of course, no matter how much talent is on display, there can only be a few winners. The judges selected Lisa Roe’s trend-forward creation as winner of the Star Award, Melo Yelo took home the Social and Personal Style Award and Preen Hair and Beauty snapped up the Men’s Image Award. But the biggest prize of all, the L’Oréal Colour Trophy Award, went to Peter Mark Dundrum Town Centre, for a perfectly soft holographic tone full of movement and shine. The Peter Mark team now gets to present the winning look at the International L’Oréal Professionnel Business Forum in Seville this October, as well as embark on a year full of exciting projects. We can’t wait to see how they do!

AN AMERICAN CLASSIC WHY CHOOSE AMERICAN CREW? BECAUSE IT WAS CREATED FOR MEN WHO KNOW THAT PAYING ATTENTION TO THEIR APPEARANCE HELPS THEM GET THE THINGS THEY WANT. AMERICAN CREW IS THE ONLY SALON BRAND BUILT ESPECIALLY FOR MEN FROM THE START. NOT A DIFFUSION LINE, BUT A LIFESTYLE BRAND CREATED WITH MEN AS ITS ONLY FOCUS. IN 1994, STYLIST DAVID RACCUGLIA WALKED INTO A CHICAGO DISTRIBUTOR’S OFFICE HOLDING A CLEAR BOTTLE FILLED WITH MAPLE SYRUP. HE ASKED FOR $25,000 TO PRODUCE THE FIRST RUN OF AMERICAN CREW SHAMPOO. NATURALLY, THE DISTRIBUTOR ASKED TO GIVE IT A TRY. AH, RACCUGLIA HADN’T ACTUALLY PRODUCED ANY SHAMPOO YET. THE MAPLE SYRUP WAS THERE TO SIMULATE THE MASCULINE, AMBER COLOUR
01_Cover JuneAW.indd 10
HE PICTURED FOR THE FINAL BOTTLE. THINKING ON HIS FEET, HE EXPLAINED THAT THE IMPORTANT PART WAS THAT THERE WAS A MOVEMENT IN MEN’S GROOMING BEGINNING TO SWELL. HE COULD ENVISION A FUTURE WHERE MEN WOULD PAY AS MUCH ATTENTION TO THEIR LOOKS AS WOMEN. AND HE KNEW THEY WOULDN’T WANT TO FEEL AS IF THEY WERE LOSING THEIR MASCULINITY IN THE PROCESS… AND HERE WE ARE TODAY. AMERICAN CREW IS THE MOST POPULAR MEN’S SALON GROOMING BRAND IN THE WORLD. MEN AND THEIR STYLISTS COUNT ON IT FOR THE LATEST AND BEST IN HAIR, BODY, SHAVE AND STYLE PRODUCTS AND HAVE DONE FOR MORE THAN 20 YEARS. PUT SIMPLY, IT’S A MODERN CLASSIC.

Get your kit together
Are your tools looking a bit tired? We’ve got the hottest innovations, coolest cutters and brilliant brushes for you – and some retail ideas, too!

YOU KNOW THE old adage: a bad workman blames his tools… but a good one can use them to create wonderful hair, boost retail and keep clients coming back. Nail this, and you’re onto a winner. Seen as the money-makers, scissors are often the most expensive piece of kit a hairdresser owns. “A good pair of scissors are not only a necessity but an investment for your career,” says Wilson McKeown, director at Scissor Lab. Poor quality or badly maintained blades can have an effect too, he adds: “They damage the hair shaft which can quickly lead to split ends, thus damaging your reputation. You also have to exert more force on the blades to use them, which can lead to RSI and carpal tunnel syndrome.” Scissors are for the salon – but brushes, dryers and stylers can help boost your retail potential. Use your client’s time in the salon chair as an opportunity to help them find the right tool to take home. Not only will this encourage sales, it will also build up the trust in your relationship and show off your honesty and expertise as a professional. “If you demo tools during the service the client is more likely to buy them,” explains Mark Woolley, founder of Electric
Hairdressing and 2016 Most Wanted Business Thinker. “The most common problem is confidence so we encourage clients to have a go themselves.” If you’ve got the extra space, why not use it to promote your tools? “Create a Tool Bar,” suggests Zoë Vears, director of publicity for Salon Success. “Part play, part display, the key is to keep it simple.” Or if there’s not room to show off everything, how about just one hero product? “We have a Product of the Month displayed at the reception and we try to use it on as many clients as possible,” explains Chelsea Kearney, owner of Blown Away, Cork. Sharing your expertise by matching your client with the perfect tool can have a powerful effect on your business. “Salons that consult with clients on the benefits of taking home the right products will ultimately retain a much stronger client base,” says Ben Waring, sales manager for Cloud Nine Ireland and UK. “Each client’s hair is as unique as a fingerprint and it’s important we talk to them about using the perfect product at the right temperature for their hair. Clients spend so much in styling and colouring, so it’s key they understand aftercare.”

IF YOU’RE USING tools a lot, you need to think of you and your client’s health, an idea that’s behind the CurlBar by Hot Tools Professional. “It’s so much easier to create curls,” says 2016 Most Wanted Colour Expert, Robert Eaton. “It reduces a lot of the strain on my arms and is really lightweight.” “We’ve found that lighter appliances are favoured by clients as they don’t want to hold anything too heavy – especially when styling for a long time,” says Sharon Malcolm, founder of Sharon Malcolm Hairdressing. “The length of the power lead is also extremely important; a longer lead is better for both in-salon and at-home styling. For us, ghd ticks all the boxes.” Teaching clients how to use their tools correctly is also important, but take it easy – remember clients aren’t pros. “We let the client do a few easier sections and show them how to hold the L’Oréal Professionnel Steampod,” says Andrew Mulvenna, owner of Andrew Mulvenna in Belfast.

The cutting edge NO TOOL IS more closely associated with hairdressing than scissors, but it’s important that you pick the right pair. “First, you should only deal with a reputable company or salesman you can trust,” says Wilson McKeown of Scissor Lab. “Second, don’t be afraid to ask questions. What type of metal are the scissors made from? What types of cutting do the scissors specialise in? Does the company supply an aftercare service for sharpening?” And don’t assume one-size-fits-all when it comes to scissors, as the wrong size won’t just impact your cutting – your health could be at risk, too. “The size, weight and design of the scissors can be determined only by you, but your scissors should really feel like an extension to your hand,” adds Wilson.

Brush and finish A GOOD BRUSH can have a huge impact on your work, and is something most, if not all, of your clients will own. Introduce them to the right one and they’ll keep up your good work at home. “Tangled, knotted hair is a big problem with clients, especially after shampooing at home,” says stylist and colour specialist Laura Cathcart of Zeba South William Street. “If clients are using the wrong tools they are eventually going to end up causing breakage.” But the latest innovations can help them to keep their hair in top condition. “Clients are amazed with the comfort of Wet Brushes when we use them after shampooing in the salon,” adds Laura. “It’s good used on wet tangled hair but also doubles up as a great brush for dry hair, whether it’s thick, fine or even curly.”

HASHTAG HEROES WE GET THE #REALTALK FROM THREE SALONS #WINNING ON SOCIAL MEDIA
LLOYDS HAIR GROUP @LLOYDS.HAIR
FACEBOOK LIKES 27K INSTAGRAM FOLLOWERS 7K OWNER DANIELLE KENNEDY “WE SET UP OUR Facebook page five years ago after we bought our salon, so we were a bit behind in terms of social media for a while – it’s been a slow, organic build. Facebook has always been very popular for us as we could put across the salon’s personality on it, but now social media is changing so we have switched our main focus from Facebook to Instagram. Unless you are sponsoring a post on Facebook, very few followers will see it, so you have to have a budget for your Facebook page. “It is not easy to gain followers on Instagram – you have to have great posts but you also have to put a lot of time and effort into getting the right hashtags and searching other posts to like and comment on. In the next year, Instagram will start moving towards the Facebook model of paying for your followers to see posts, so you need to make the most out it and build it while it’s free… and then it might be time to move on to the next big thing!
42
42-43_Social Media.indd 1
“We mostly post hair pictures but we have also built our following by being able to get our personality and team spirit across, so we post a lot about the team, too. I get staff to send me about 20 pictures of each client – I usually need that mix of the 20 to get one really good image. Find the perfect spot in your salon for taking pictures – it needs to have warm and cool light so that it shows hair colour correctly. As for editing your pictures… don’t! Just crop, collage or mirror. “I keep captions simple and leave the pictures to speak for themselves, but we do have a list of hashtags that we use on every post – #lloyds #lloydshair #lloydslife #hair #hairsalon – and then will add appropriate hashtags for each image. We reply to all messages within few hours and like and comment on anything we are tagged in. I’d also recommend deleting anything that doesn’t get much interest. Every few months I go through our Instagram and Facebook and delete old pictures that no longer reflect the brand.”

TIME IT RIGHT “There is a fine line between posting too little and too much. You need to be present on people’s feeds, but if you post too frequently then people will get sick of it – seeing six or seven posts in a row is a no-no. Evenings are usually best, when people are bored at home and on their phones, although remember that people are often out on Fridays and Saturdays, and have a lie-in on Sundays.”
SHOW OFF YOUR STRENGTHS
“Our salon specialises in extensions, so our social media reflects this. We often post ‘before and after’ pictures, as people like to see this kind of drastic transformation and know that they are going to the best place for this service. We show pictures of our clip-ins as well, so they can see what options are possible before they even set foot in the salon.”
THINK ABOUT INTERIORS
“We are a luxury salon, with lots of gold, wooden floors and chandeliers. This means that people want to be
seen there, so they’ll take pictures for social media and do the hard work for you. We have a window that opens out onto the beach and gives lovely light. There’s also a wall with our branding on it, that people can take photos in front of it like the Oscars!”
WORK WITH INFLUENCERS
“We often repost photos from influencers who come into the salon. They are professionals when it comes to perfecting their shots – they can put in the time and effort to edit photos and they often have gadgets like ring lights to improve them so they look amazing. By reposting their photos you can engage with your target audience, and when people see bloggers with their pictures taken at Zero One, it’s enticing.”
1 Don’t make your account private – let everyone see your work. 2 Put your location, contact details and so on in your bio. 3 Your username is very important – people must be able to find you! 4 Showcase your personality. 5 Make sure all the team is on same page aesthetically so you can promote everyone. 6 You’ll need consistency in your imagery – the lighting, the background wall and so on. Invest in a ring light, you don’t want shadows! 7 Use Snapchat and Instagram Stories for ‘messy stuff’ – mixing colours and so on. Keep it beautiful for Instagram. 8 Hashtags are the new Google. What would someone search for? Don’t just write ‘hair’! Tag companies you’re involved with and hopefully they’ll repost you. We always tag Unite! 9 Don’t worry about likes – they don’t get you money, clients do. Make it beautiful!
DARE TO BE DIFFERENT
“Social media is always changing so you have to be one step ahead of the curve. Try new ways to promote your salon, don’t just do what everyone else does. Always be creative and you’ll reach new audiences.” As revealed at Unite Global Session 2016

Atomic HELD NEXT TO the iconic Atomium building in Brussels (one heck of a place for an American Crew press conference), Wayne Lloyd Hair’s Ciaran O’Sullivan was competing for Ireland in the All Star Challenge at the Revlon Professional Style Masters Show. More than 3,500 guests were treated to spellbinding presentations from Revlon Professional as well as the announcement of the global winners. There was the Havana-inspired Shape-a-Porter, Amazon-inspired Orofluido and new launch Double or Nothing, as well as exceptional grooming from American Crew that celebrated morning shave routines. Revlon Professional’s international artistic and education director, Miguel García Cortado, also introduced a breath-taking section dedicated to “the dreamers”, soundtracked by songs from La La Land. Then the moments of truth… The UK’s Taylor Taylor Barbers’ Adam Mir was named the American Crew All Star Challenge global winner by American Crew founder David Raccuglia, taking home a cash prize of $10,000 (€8,760). Then it was onto the global final of Revlon Professional’s Style Masters, which the UK’s Anne Veck won in 2016. She was on stage with the global finalists – including salon colleague Emmanuel Esteban representing the UK – to present their intricate, unique avant-garde models. This year Germany took home the overall prize, France won best commercial look; Spain scooped best live execution and Poland landed the Young Talent prize.

FINALISTS AND VIP guests flocked to the sumptuous settings of Fade Street Social in Dublin for the Great Lengths Ireland Awards, including Creative HEAD Ireland editor Anna Samson, who also helped to judge the competition. Extensions experts from all over the country arrived at the venue to enjoy glasses of fizz and a three course meal before the awards got underway. TV3 presenter Deric Hartigan hosted the afternoon, and Chris King, director of Great Lengths, dished out awards and champagne to the deserving winners. Guests included models Lynn Kelly and Alannah Beirne, blogger Sarah Hanrahan, radio presenter Rebecca McKinney, and model Holly Carpenter, who was also a judge for the awards. “It has been a delight to host the awards in Ireland,” said Chris. “There are so many talented stylists here and we are so happy to have the chance to reward them. Past entries and winners have blown us away and this year was no exception. We hope that the winners go on to reap the business benefits that this accolade will hopefully bring them.”

SUN, SEA… SARDINIA! The sun-drenched Italian island was home to nearly 800 hairdressers from 24 countries, who congregated at the luxury Forte Village resort for Paul Mitchell’s second annual Global Gathering. A fun-filled, creativity-fuelled merging of education and inspiration, it went down a storm with attendees, who immersed themselves in specially crafted workshops, business coaching classes and live stage demos and presentations from Paul Mitchell master artists, including the UK’s Vicky Panting and James Davies and global editorial and digital director Lucie Doughty. Highlights included a session with sales and marketing vice-president Jason Yates on the ‘six economies of the salon’; business coach Antony Whitaker’s talk about Generation Z and new consumer expectations; and main stage appearances by global artistic and business director, Robert Cromeans. Exciting revelations included the launch of Paul Mitchell’s ‘electric youth’ styling collection Neon, and in-salon colour treatment Color Craft, and a representation of 10 of the world’s most iconic brands translated into hair, beauty and fashion.
