MOST WANTED JUDGEMENT DAY THERE WERE A phenomenal number of entries, but only a select few made it onto the 2018 Most Wanted shortlist. Each category was judged by its own panel of experts from inside and outside the industry, which saw a throng of names in hair, fashion, publishing and business roll up to knuckle down and assess what was without doubt the toughest two days of judging – EVER. These included session stylist Ken O’Rourke, Gianni Scumaci, Sophia Hilton, Vogue’s Jessica Diner, Katy Young of Harper’s Bazaar, Paul Percival of Percy & Reed, The Beauty Conversation’s Navaz Batliwalla, Millie Kendall MBE of BeautyMART and Errol Douglas MBE. GREAT LENGTHS STAR SALONS GO ON A ROMAN HOLIDAY THE TOP NINE Great Lengths salons in Ireland and the UK were whisked away to Rome as a reward for their hard work and expertise. The nine salons with the highest number of Great Lengths hair extensions sold were certified with platinum status and invited to visit the production facility in the Italian capital. They learned about the 25-year history of the brand, and observed the cutting-edge technology used to create the products today. Valerie Patterson, director of Cowboys and Angels in Dublin, said: “We observed long-term, skilled workers making sure every single hair is top quality, from arriving in raw bunches from India to the five-star products we buy from Great Lengths.”

Spark Sessions celebrate women in hairdressing
The first ever IHF Spark Sessions event to celebrate the successes of women in the industry and create a network of support, took place at the Galmont Hotel in Galway. A panel discussion formed the centrepiece of the session, featuring (pictured above, from left) Sarah Mason of Sarah Mason Professional, Olive Tucker Lee from House of Colour, Denise Walsh of Rustiq Salon and Danielle Kennedy, vice-president of the IHF and owner of Lloyds Hair. They shared their thoughts and ideas on what it means to be a successful female in the hair industry in Ireland, and discussed how they built their businesses, along with hopes for the future. The next session will take place in Waterford this autumn.

A healthy return Blasting air at high temperatures towards hair is going to have an impact – that’s just a fact. Their research showed that with extreme heat, the structures within the hair become damaged. The result? Weaker hair that’s less shiny as light scatters off the hair rather than reflecting evenly. Ready for take-off The Dyson Supersonic hair dryer Professional edition is the destination; behind it, there’s an incredible journey… Most hair dryers are, in the eyes of leading engineers, dumb things – noisy, heavy, non-ergonomic and delivering heat damage to hair. The team at Dyson, squirrelled away in its labs in the Cotswolds, were convinced there was a better, more intelligent way. And that way takes a lot of work – £56m was spent on building hair science labs and conducting painstaking research before a single hair dryer was sold. Over four years, 103 Dyson engineers, including scientists and stylists, looked at everything from air flow dynamics to hair’s cellular structure, completing tests using nearly 1,625km of hair. A total of £75m has been spent to craft and then reengineer the Dyson Supersonic and the Professional edition. Advanced scanning electron microscopes let Dyson scientists look at single strands of human hair in high definition after testing. Why? To understand the structure of hair and which elements cause splits, holes and other damage. Tensile tests measures the strength and elasticity of each hair strand before and after drying and styling, by stretching the strand until it breaks. Healthy hair remains strong and elastic while damaged hair is easier to break. Thermal cameras allow Dyson engineers to understand the temperature of the airflow coming out of the machine, ensuring it’s consistent throughout, even when pushed close to your client’s head or to a brush. The Real Imaging Test Algorithm machine – known as RITA by the Dyson techs – provides a range of image settings specifically designed to highlight key hair stress characteristics and features, such as strand alignment, flyaways and frizz. Particle Image Velocimetry allowed Dyson engineers to measure the speed of the jet and visualise its shape. Get a deeper understanding of the jet structure and turbulence, and you can optimise the airflow. Aero-acoustic engineers listened to the sound of the Supersonic. By refining the design, those engineers have created a tone that we humans can’t even hear. It took 582 prototypes until those Dyson perfectionists were satisfied. MAKE PEOPLE YOUR BUSINESS YOU COULD HAVE the best salon in the world, but without the right people working in it, you’re not going to have much success. So how can you ensure that your salon is staffed by the crème de la crème of hairdressing – and how can you hold onto them in the long run? Kara O’Shea, general manager at Sean Taaffe, knows exactly what she wants when she is searching for staff. “We look for people who are passionate about the industry – that fire has to be present from the start,” she explains. “There has to be an excitement about up-and-coming trends – I want them to talk about what they would love to be able to do in the future. We also look at their past employment history to see whether they’ve stuck with things.” She has used many methods of recruitment, and the results are surprising. “We have done basically everything, online recruitment agencies, radio, and social media, but what works best for us is word of mouth with incentives in our team. Recently I put a front of house position on our salon group chat, and by the end of the day five people had been recommended. We provide a financial incentive to staff who refer someone – they get half of their bonus when the new person starts, and after six months we give them the other half.” Niamh O’Loughlin from Rossanos salon group looks for young people with potential, who can then be trained.
“We engage with the students in college studying hairdressing or beauty as well as students still deciding on a career,” she says. “We are having open days this September with local secondary schools to give them an insight to life at Rossanos. There’s nothing as satisfying as watching a young stylist flourish in their career and really grow into their own.” So, you’ve got the right staff – now how can you hold onto them? “It is so important to communicate with all employees and be aware of what is going on in their lives outside of the salon,” explains Deirdre Kilcoyne, co-owner of Salon 2 in Sligo. “You have to be understanding and flexible with them if they are dealing with some issues. As staff situations change we try and work with them to ensure it suits them and the business – and we always try to be firm but fair.” Sean Taaffe has an incentive scheme in place that offers perks to staff who remain at the company. “You can earn extra holidays – up to 30 a year,” says Kara. “People on the scheme get to leave earlier on holidays such as Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. We also offer them exciting opportunities, pay for their parking and give their close family members half-price hairdressing services. “To keep them interested in the brand we add something more each year. You might be offered a job down the road that offers you €100 more a week – but are they going to give you those extra things?”

There is an answer to every hairdressing problem out there – all you need is the right tool PROBLEM-SOLVING IS a skill listed on every CV; we all value the ability to find solutions to issues we encounter. And, when it comes to hair, there are the same problems that come up again and again. Some clients struggle with a lack of volume, while others are troubled by wet styling or frizz. Luckily, with a bag full of carefully curated gadgets, you can solve those issues – giving clients the best hair possible and providing them with the right tools to take home, too. When you’re choosing your own tools, you need to invest in the best, and consider the hair’s long-term health. “We sometimes think that if we put a tool up to the full heat it gets a client out quicker, but this is not the case,” says Dylan Bradshaw, owner of Dylan Bradshaw salon and two-time Most Wanted Exceptional Stylist winner. “We talk about colour and treatments, then we burn the hair! Our clients deserve the best, and Dyson has reinvented the wheel. At my salon we have monthly staff meetings to refresh our knowledge. We give every client a little briefing, without it being a hard sell, and find out about their lifestyle. If hair isn’t maintained away from the salon, then you haven’t given them the full service.” It’s also important to flaunt your expertise – so make sure you demonstrate the benefits of a piece of kit. “As a professional, clients will value your advice and are more likely to see you as a gateway to better hair, trusting your recommendations, especially if they see it in action,” explains Gorka Arraras, creative manager at Charles Worthington Salons in London. “Demonstrate to the client how to use the tools. They will see the effect of using the correct tool or specific brush and understand that it will not only ease their styling routine, it will also make a difference on the hair and its quality.” Get into the habit of sharing your know-how and you’ll see a nice boost to your retail when clients leave the salon with new gadgets. “Knowledge is key – the client will know and feel if what you’re advising will make a difference,” explains Gorka. “Once you build that trust, selling retail is second nature.”

Every stylist knows that hair is more prone to breakage when wet – and yet even the most lowmaintenance client has to deal with it. WITH BUILDINGS DESIGNED by legendary architect Gaudí and long, tree-lined streets that lead down to the sea, Barcelona is a hub of artistic expression. So it’s no surprise that the city was picked to host the 10th annual Style Masters International Awards. Thousands of hairdressers gathered to support their countries at the event, which was hosted by Miquel García, global executive vice-president for artistic and education at Revlon Professional. The show saw live styling from finalists, with David Rae representing the UK and Maria Montes Campal of Spain taking home the trophy. Sam Wall flew the flag for the UK in the American Crew All-Star Challenge, but was pipped to the post by Vitaly Pimenov of Russia. And there was no shortage of inspiration, too – from the aquatic beauty of the Eksperience segment and the launch of Glamsquad to the raw power and sharp barbering of the American Crew show, these hairdressers proved they are truly masters of their craft.

The contest saw stylists from Ireland joining contestants from all over Europe and Latin America, all battling it out to create unique, on-trend colour looks. Emma Finlay of Couture Hair in Omagh represented Ireland, having qualified after winning the Fantastic Colourist Award at the ALFAPARF Milano Fantastic Hairdresser Awards last year. However, it was Daria Elida Ardelean of Romania and her peachy pink creation that took the top prize. The event also featured the ‘Time After Time’ hair show by members of the ALFAPARF Milano International Team, including Mimmo Laserra, Genny D’Auria and global ambassador, Paul Stafford. It guided the 1,300-strong audience through looks from the past and present with a glimpse of the future – which appears very exciting indeed.

A POSTPONEMENT FROM March didn’t stop the crowds from flocking to Croke Park for the Irish Hairdressers Federation Championships, as well as a record-breaking number of competitors. Throughout the day, hairdressers, trainees and barbers showed off their skills in front of an audience and judging panel, with hopes of taking home one of the trophies. And once the hard work of judging the creations was done, it was time to gather for the ceremony. Newly inaugurated IHF president and co-founder of House of Colour, David Campbell, hosted the evening, presenting 21 accolades and celebrating the talent demonstrated by hairdressers from all over Ireland. The finale saw Ciaran Dowd of Occasions Hairdressing given the ultimate title – IHF ALFAPARF Irish Hairdresser of the Year.
