THE DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL PROTECTION has announced it is investigating cases where PUP claimants have declined return-to-work offers to ensure that only those who meet the qualifying conditions remain in receipt of the payment. Salon owners have raised concerns about staff not returning to work, despite growing demand for services. Their anxiety and post-lockdown challenges have gained much media attention. But government has assured employers that department officials will follow up on their communications. The Inspire competition is open to any Republic of Ireland salon and will see six winners selected to participate in a shoot with the brand’s global ambassador, Tyler Johnston. To enter, hairdressers need to tag their best colour transformations on Instagram using #SKPInspireIRE. Each entry must be individual (no joint efforts), include a before and after shot, and each entrant can put forward up to three looks. DAVID MURRAY @21’S natural aesthetic was beautiful before a year of lockdowns, but newly uncloistered clients have a special appreciation for it now. The Drogheda salon owner has been in business more than 23 years, with many of his salons on the town’s auspiciously named Fair Street, and he understands that interiors can communicate an entire vibe. In the past year, he’s focused on further integrating and extending the salon’s use of a private garden. “We’ve developed the outdoor space as much as possible, creating new seating areas and incorporating a lovely apple tree and other natural elements. We also have a terraced area with tables and chairs where people can have coffee and enjoy the surroundings while their colour develops. We’ve also put a canopy up to protect the hair from UV damage.” Inside, David’s priority is keeping the environment calm and comfortable, “almost like a beautiful retreat and not too modern, because we are in a Georgian building. I wanted to reflect the architectural heritage in places”. Plants are dotted around the waiting area, and music is kept low as conversation is the salon’s favourite soundtrack. Products, while noticeable, are not too loudly displayed. All the better for making post-lockdown looks light up the room.

The right training and dedicated skills are the first step to creating services that cater to these clients. Having at least one expert in the salon who in turn trains the salon teams and keeps up to date on all the products, techniques, or changes in the hair-loss space is key. Irish stylists have traditionally looked abroad for training; Dublin hair loss and wig specialist Jennifer Foley trained with Trevor Sorbie’s My New Hair in London. Denise Phillips of Pelo Hairdressing in Newbridge is studying with The London Institute of Trichology and qualified from the United States Trichology Institute. Closer to home, the Charles Institute of Dermatology at University College Dublin now offers a professional certificate in skin and hair follicle science. Newbridge scalp and wig specialist Aileen McNally, a former retail educator for Joico and ALFAPARF Milano, has designed an online training programme with Image Skillnet to teach hairdressers how to identify the type of hair loss they’re dealing with, as well as to provide oncology aesthetics training. “I used to run three salons and what I found while researching hair loss was that you don’t need to tie up thousands of euros in new stock to offer services, with the right training you can order solutions for your clients on a case-by-case basis.”

HOW TO... IDENTIFY PROBLEMS
There is no single profile for a hair loss client, so careful identification is key. “Women going through menopause, IVF, thyroid and postpartum issues, and obviously stress can all make a huge impact,” says Lisa Cantwell, owner of Plush Hair Salon in Waterford. Both Lisa and Gemma Crossan, founder of Hot Head Hair Salon in Sligo, use the Kemon Actyva Everflo Respiranox Machine for diagnosing and treating hair and scalp problems. The oxygen therapy machine carries 90 per cent to 96 per cent-pure concentrated oxygen to the skin, which speeds up the renewal process, making the hair thicker and fuller. Gemma uses a scalp camera to identify problems before they take root: “The camera captures images 60-times closer than we can see with the naked eye. It’s very helpful is assessing issues like dehydration and starting that conversation with the client.” Staying on top of hair loss information can be just as vital as a strong skills base. Ann Marie Comerford, founder of Cheveux Hair Salon in Tullamore, has four stylists that specialise in hair loss and retains an on-staff trichologist. She offers oxygen therapy and is also a national educator for CNC Hair Systems. “We do monthly training on hair loss and scalp issues with all 17 staff to give clients the best possible care.”

A proper hair loss consultation requires transparency, but how do you start such a sensitive conversation? Many stylists have personal anecdotes and experience that can help clients feel more at ease, and private rooms or spaces where they can feel comfortable talking are a good investment. If you spot something that concerns you, asking about any recent health issues can also shed light on whether someone has stress or medicalrelated hair loss or needs a scalp assessment. “Post-lockdown, many clients are focused on their hair. We’ve seen them taking time out to really look at their hair and scalp,” says Denise Phillips of Pelo Hairdressing. “We did free consultations while they were at home. Home care needs to be monitored over time, so once the conversation has begun it needs to continue. Also, once you develop a good reputation people tend to book in specifically.”

“We now have express offerings for clients who want to come back but are still nervous of being in the salon for long periods of time. This can mean putting two stylists on one client and any other measure we think will speed up the service. Right now there aren’t as many clients willing to spend three hours in the chair.
