hello...
Whether you’re a homebird or simply stuck in a bit of a rut, the thought of moving away from everything you know to a new country can be a daunting prospect. And while the homegrown opportunities that are now available to hairdressers are bigger and better than ever before, your craft can take you anywhere in the world and open doors you probably didn’t think existed. In our ‘Have Scissors. Will Travel’ feature from page 32, we find out what it’s like to work on the international scene. Some of the stories are weird and some are wonderful, but all are once-in-a-lifetime experiences! And I’m sort-of putting this theory into practice myself, because this issue of Creative HEAD Ireland will be my last before I move on to new pastures. I’m leaving you in the very capable hands of Rosemary MacCabe who would love to hear from you – so don’t be shy! Her email address is rosemary@headmag.ie. Finally, I’d like to say that it’s been a pleasure getting to know the industry from a unique perspective in the past 14 months. Thank you all for your support! Aoibhinn McBride Editor

THE NEWS AND KNOW-HOW FROM YOUR INDUSTRY
THE GATHERING A REMOTE HIDEAWAY in the heart of the Wicklow Mountains was the destination of choice for the annual seanhanna managers’ conference. A first for the UK salon group, its Irish adventure was divided into three parts – seanhanna business, team building activities and just having a great time with adrenalinefuelled teambuilding exercises that included flying down a zip wire, mountain climbing and archery. Sean said: “Taking the team outside their normal environment gives them the opportunity to analyse what they do and their performance in a much more objective way.”
Pedal pushers SOME OF IRELAND’S TOP hairdressers recently swapped their scissors for saddles to take part in the inaugural four-day L’Oréal Professionnel Pink Pedal to Paris Cycle. Top stylists from all over the country, including Ciaran Nevin (who came up with the fundraiser idea), Mark O’Keeffe, Paul Dromgoole and Jim Hatton, mounted their bikes to cycle from Dublin to Paris to raise funds for Breast Cancer Ireland, covering 500km before they finished at the L’Oréal European Head Office in Paris. With more
than €40,000 raised by the group to date, Ciaran, from Ciaran Nevin Hair & Beauty Salon in Terenure, is delighted with the response they’ve received. “As a keen cyclist, I was intrigued by the prospect of pedalling to Paris,” he said. “We presented the concept to L’Oréal Professionnel, who rallied support from within the industry and, with the help of our wonderful customers, many of whom have been affected by breast cancer themselves, the salon has raised more than €19,000 so far.”

Why restrict yourself to business hours when you could keep your salon open 24/7? We can browse for flights, look for clothes and connect with friends all from the comfort of our smartphones. So why is the hairdressing industry still so reluctant to provide the same ‘browseability’ to its customers online? “The beauty of providing online bookings is that people are no longer working to your opening hours, you are actually working to their schedule,” explains Connor Keppel, marketing manager at Phorest. “This means that you capture bookings 24/7 and you never give the competition a chance to wow your loyal clients because of a last-minute request.” “Having a strong social media presence, an app and a website means you are easily found. Updating your website and social media accounts regularly means you will rank better on Google,” he adds. “Think of it like this – the better you rank, the closer your shop is to the ‘online main street’ and the more online passers-by and new clients you’ll get.” This is something Kieran Walsh from WhatSalon agrees

Why did you want to be a hairdresser? When I was just 14, I started working in a salon in my hometown. I had always loved playing with hair from when I was a young girl and that job in the salon was the start of my real passion for hairdressing. I’ve never really wanted to do anything else.
with. “The landscape of the salon industry has been flipped on its head with the arrival of online booking. I like to think of it as a digital shop front that’s always open for business,” he says. “Everyone is looking for that edge to reduce those empty column inches and while catering for customers that you already know through text bookings is great, the wider audience now live online.” One salon putting this into practice is the Hession Hairdressing group. Hession uses Facebook, Twitter and Instagram daily to encourage two-way communication with potential clients, while also creating lasting relationships with existing customers. Salon owner Paul Hession, explains: “By embracing social media, we feel it aligns us with forward-thinking businesses. It is essential in this day and age to be available to your clientele outside of business hours and we feel that having an online presence allows us do this effectively.”
What have been your highlights so far? My highlight so far has been working for Paul and Ian [Davey, owners of Davey Davey]. They are both extremely driven and incredibly passionate about what they do and that has helped me grow and develop so much as a hairdresser. They’ve also helped me to always believe in myself.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years? I will be 40, so that’s scary to think about, but I’ve always believed I will have my own salon one day. I’d also absolutely love to win the L’Oréal Colour Trophy at least once within that time frame. And a long list of celebrity clients would definitely be nice…

Life lessons Michelle McDermott, Peter Mark Dundrum Town Centre Always be willing to learn. The mind that opens to a new idea never returns to its original size. Try to enhance your skill every day, no matter how experienced you may be. I believe my willingness to learn and to try something new every day has made me the stylist I am today.
Never strive for success; strive for perfection. If you strive for success you can overlook your work. If you strive for perfection in what you do, success will follow. I am a perfectionist and I aim for excellence every time I have a client in front of me.
Motivate and encourage. Mentoring and encouraging my team helps to bring out the best in me as well as them. Helping and encouraging your colleagues and those around you can help your own positivity. Be prepared to work hard and persevere. Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard. When I’m not working, I’m thinking about work and ways to improve myself. You only get from your work what you put into it.
Believe in yourself. Always have belief in your own ability. There may be some bumps along the way, but it’s overcoming these challenges that makes you a better person and a better stylist.
Sometimes, people just want you to listen. In my line of work, clients open up to you about some pretty personal stuff, but they don’t want your advice. They just want someone to talk to who has no opinion, just a pair of ears. I try to apply this to all of my relationships. Sometimes people just want you to listen.
Have patience. Hairdressing certainly teaches you to have patience. I would advise anyone to constantly try and improve their work while taking in what’s going on around them, rather than worrying about the competition.
Learn the art of leisure. Work is something I love and have a huge passion for, but I avoid allowing it to be my only source of fulfilment. Find an outside interest or two, focusing on things that may bring you pleasure, satisfaction and a heightened sense of self-worth.
Identify and develop your unique strengths. What’s unique about what you do? And in what areas do you excel and contribute the most, both at work and outside of work? Focus on your own core competencies and find new ways to cultivate and cherish them.
Have no regrets. Never regret anything that has happened in your life; it cannot be changed, undone or forgotten. Take it all as lessons learned and move on with grace.

e d i s n I story Gro London, Vauxhall, UK At Gro, team members are partners of the business rather than staff. This view, alongside the brand’s philosophy of nurturing raw talent, inspired architects GREAD to use raw materials, exposing the concrete structure and original pipe work hidden for many years under a false ceiling. With furniture manufactured using reclaimed wood and steel, clients get to experience materials in a less refined state. A mixture of quirky and inspirational messages are scattered around to put smiles on clients’ faces (we spotted some at the backwash!), thanks to the talents of Roopa Designs. Balancing the bright colours of Gro’s branding with relaxed pieces while keeping the floor as a statement and signature, the finished result is eclectically urban.

It may sound like a cliché, but often in a competition, the taking part is almost as important as winning. This is something that rings true for the hundreds of salons who have entered the Schwarzkopf Professional Irish Hairdressing Business Awards since they began back in 2003. Not only are the awards unique in that they support and applaud business acumen, an innovative attitude to customer service and highlight the importance of training and education, but they’re also open to any salon in Ireland regardless of what brands they use. So if winning isn’t the most important outcome, why take part? From motivating your team to really looking at your business from an outsider’s perspective and seeing what your rivals are doing differently – think of the application form as your training session where you’ll really put in the hard graft to get your team fighting fit to compete in the final. And if you do win? Well, invaluable press coverage, the ability to impress investors, help attract high-quality staff, as well as raise your profile on a national level are just some of the perks you can look forward to. We talked to some of last year’s winners to see what they had to say about the process and to find out first-hand why it’s vital for your business to enter...

Ian Davey, Davey Davey, Dublin Winner of the Website of the Year Award 2013 and 2012 “Entering the awards is such a positive experience as it allows you to view your business from a customer care perspective. Winning the award twice is testament to the hard work that was involved in developing the company and creating a platform to market our business.”
Niall Colgan Hairdressing, Limerick Salon of the Year Award 2013 “We entered because we’re a relatively new business, so we wanted to raise our profile and show people that we’re doing something different – and that our service levels are very strong. Since winning, it’s made me look at my business and re-evaluate what we do. It encourages you to make changes to improve even after you win.” Creative Head Ireland

Eddie Mulligan, Hype Hair Group, Waterford Winners of Retail Salon of the Year, Trainee of the Year, Training Award 2013 “We are especially proud of our wins as it means our investment into training is paying off. It also means that our trainees are getting the best possible training and our customers are winning, too.”
Kevin Kahan, Kevin Kahan Hairdressing and Beauty, Bangor, Co. Down Winner of the Hall of Fame Award 2013 The salon has been a vision of ours for so long. To have it acknowledged by the judges – especially someone like Antony Whitaker, the Schwarzkopf Professional global business ambassador – is amazing.”
Anna Forde, Yourells, Galway Winners of Customer Care Award, Marketing Salon of the Year and Reception/Front of House Award 2013 “Every time we win it feels amazing to be recognised by our peers within the business. The application process really makes you take a look at your business, so when we applied the following year it made us see everything we had improved on.”

A 12th-century church isn’t the most obvious choice for a high-octane hair show, but that didn’t stop the Limerick leg of the Matrix Excite Me tour from being a sell-out success! The unique event took place at St Mary’s Cathedral, Limerick’s oldest building that’s still in use, and saw Alexander Turnbull and Kieran O’Gorman take to the stage to present an evening of artistry and colour inspiration. Music provided the creative theme for the evening with live stage work spanning the most influential genres – punk, R and B, pop and indie – while audience participation was encouraged with a #matrixselfie Twitter competition. From micro-crimping to huge Madame de Pompadour-inspired up-dos, razor-sharp perimeters to loose, undone waves, the crowd was given a masterclass in creative yet commercially grounded looks.

Taking place on the stunning Wella stand at Hair & Beauty in Frankfurt, international guests gathered to swoon over the beautiful shows by Austria’s Bundy Bundy and Russia’s Dimitry Vinokurov, all the while entertained by hair showman Patrick Cameron. A new format was unveiled this year, with the national winners divided into Live Vision and Photo Vision competitions. And it was a success for Ireland as Shauna McGrath from House of Colour won bronze in the Young Talent category of the Photo element. At the end of the show, Monaco was unveiled as the next host of the ITVA final on 23 November. Two helpings of TrendVision in six months? Bring it on!

These new products address rarely talked-about scalp issues such as sensitivity, dryness or discomfort and so are a great opportunity for salons to provide professional expertise on the area. Find out more about each of the products below to discover which one you should prescribe to your hair-abusing clients...
Damage level one: Fine to normal hair with light damage Prescription: Urban anti-dotes re-energise mask How it works: Hair with this level of damage shouldn’t be weighed down with heavy conditioners so the lightweight silicone system in this mask smoothes the surface without overloading, while surface repair technologies prevent further damage and reduce static. Prescribed dosage: Once a week
26
p26-27_Tigi_promo_GW1 2
Damage level two: Normal to dry hair with medium damage Prescription: Urban anti-dotes recovery mask How it works: Penetrating molecules repair fibres internally, while hydrating molecules act like sponges, drawing moisture in from their surroundings to remove dry feeling from hair. Surface mending agents prevent further moisture loss and damage. Prescribed dosage: Once a week
Damage level three: Thick or severely damaged hair Prescription: Urban anti-dotes resurrection mask How it works: Heavy duty repair treatment that reconstructs the hair shaft inside and out. Core repair technology penetrates the hair shaft to restructure proteins inside the hair fibre, while a serious dose of surface repair actives condition the damaged surface. Prescribed dosage: Once a week

“TIGI Bed Head urban antidotes treatment masks really work because each level is tailored to suit different damage needs. Using the level that suits your client’s hair means they’ll get exactly what they need” Akos Bodi, TIGI European creative director
Daily fix: urban anti-dotes reboot scalp shampoo How it works: This cleansing system gently removes product build up and scalp debris from the hair and scalp while zinc pyrithione promotes overall scalp health by soothing irritation and helping the scalp hold onto moisture. Prescribed dosage: Use daily with a prescribed urban anti-dotes conditioner

THE BIG IDEA
Sean Taaffe Hair
New roots From alopecia to chemotherapy, for many clients, feeling comfortable enough to let a hairdresser in on their deepest worries and concerns is a daunting prospect. And equally, for most hairdressers, broaching hair loss with customers can be a tricky subject. But Sean Taaffe Hair & Beauty Group in Kerry is hoping to change all that with the launch of its new Private Wig Consultancy Clinics in its two main salons in Killarney and Tralee. Designed to offer clients a sensitive and private approach, each clinic is managed by specially trained consultants within the Sean Taaffe Group and will offer a personalised service to clients. Each wig will be available in a range of lengths, colours and styles, and the cost of each wig can be part-funded by the HSE and personal health insurance.

With such a strong work ethic, it would be easy to assume that Nigel Kenny had always envisaged opening up his own salon, but he says it was never something he imagined for himself. That is until one day it dawned on him that maybe being his own boss would make more sense. “I was managing a salon at the time and one day I looked around and it was full of my clients,” he explains. “I’m quite an impulsive person and I just thought ‘why not?’” Why not indeed – four years since its launch, Hair by Nigel & Co in Kilkenny’s Market Yard area is buzzing. Nigel started his career at Peter Mark in Market Cross, Kilkenny and says that travelling from his hometown in Tipperary every day was proof of his dedication to his craft from the outset. “I started my apprenticeship in 1998

and from my tiny village I’d have to get a bus and then walk the rest of the way,” he reveals. “It was a 50-mile trip each way and I used to hitch lifts a lot! But it made me realise that I really wanted to succeed in hairdressing.” However, he says that making the transition from creative to business owner didn’t come easily to him. “Creative people in school were always drawing on the desk rather than listening in business studies class but when I got into management, I saw the other side of the business. I was always more interested in the creative side, but I’ve learnt how being in control can give you more freedom.” He also believes that education is the other essential component that gives creative people that freedom to express themselves and develop their talent in
a commercial environment. “Finding and nurturing talent is so important for the industry,” he says. “I want to teach people that fear is a negative emotion that prevents you from achieving. But you have to want education. The industry is evolving, so regardless of how experienced you are, you have to keep learning and evolving, too.” Nigel hopes his new appointment as Ireland’s first Matrix artistic educator will help change long-held perceptions. “There is so much unharnessed talent here, and we need to carve out our own identity,” he says. “We’re never going to become a hairdressing powerhouse and hotbed of talent if we don’t break away from the UK. As a country, we’re changing constantly and our profile is different and we need to have confidence in what’s happening here.”

Just where can your hands take you? Discover how hairdressing is your passport to the world…
From Dublin to down under (via NYC)
When Carla Rose McQuillan was offered the chance to work with a photographer in New York and then in a high-end salon in Sydney, she grabbed the opportunities with both hands... “I went to New York for three months to assist photographer and director Joe Wehner as I wanted to build as much experience in the session world as possible. I lived and worked with him so it was an invaluable insight into such a creative mind. New York is one of the biggest fashion-minded cities in the world, and session styling is in huge demand there. The thing I love the most about travelling and working in different places is that the body of work you can produce has no limits. In Ireland, it can be hard to be a full-time session stylist as the market is small and still
32
p32-37_International Feature_GW4.indd 2
developing. Most aspiring session stylists need to travel to London, New York or Paris to develop their skills if they truly want to be at the top of their game. Another big difference is the diversity of models. In Ireland, a lot of the models become over exposed. It’s great to get to work with fresh faces that no one has seen or can associate with another brand. This is also why I decided to go to Sydney. So many people told me to go there because I would love the lifestyle. In Ireland, what’s going on in Europe has a big influence, but women in Sydney seem to have a more individual style, which is very refreshing. I worked in the financial district, which is running
at a very fast pace with no signs of any recession, and my clients were business-savvy women. Time was money and they needed to look good 24/7. One particular client of mine used to come to get her hair done every day. Your craft can take you anywhere and, if you’re open to it, anything can happen. Travelling and seeing what’s out there has inspired me and given me the confidence to open my own business and I’m now working out of a creative studio in Dublin as well as doing freelance session work.”

Life on the road
Globetrotting stylist Dylan Bradshaw travels the world as a L’Oréal Professionnel educator. Here he shares some of his most memorable moments… On being the fifth member of U2 I did a film shoot with U2 in New York where the lads were on a truck driving from Harlem to Times Square. Bono’s hair was longer at the time so I needed to stay on the truck during takes and had to crouch down out of sight while the cameras were rolling. Fans and paparazzi were chasing them to get pictures and the next day there I was in all the papers, crouched down beside the band! On his near-death experience in India On my second trip to India, I had to catch a flight from New Delhi to Bangladesh in the middle of monsoon season and it was terrifying. The plane bounced around and was struck by lightning, and everyone was screaming. I genuinely thought we were going to crash!
On always being honest with airport security I was asked to do a shoot in Montreal and didn’t have time to sort a work visa out so I was told to just tell Canadian immigration that I was there for a holiday. I had got away with it until they opened up my bag and found my kit, which included a massive bag of white powdered bleach. They thought they had hit the jackpot and four armed guards brought me into a room and started to interrogate me. They kept me for four hours because they thought I was a terrorist, but when I explained I was a hairdresser they eventually let me go.
The lone ranger Josh Wood, founder of the Atelier and Wella Professionals global creative director for colour, puts other frequent flyers to shame
Creative HEAD: Where’s your favourite place to visit? Josh Wood: I love India. When I’m working with clients or shooting there, generally for Indian Vogue, I always try to get a bit of yoga in and visit friends. But, I also love New York.
CH: What are the pros of travelling

so much? JW: Air Miles! Seriously though, I get to work with some amazing people all over the world, I have
great assistants I can call on in many destinations. The one great thing about working out of a bag all over the world is I always learn something new wherever I go.
CH: Considering you travel so often for work, what’s your idea of a perfect private getaway? JW: I have a little cottage in Oxfordshire that I love to escape to when I can. I love arriving at a hotel that I stay at a lot, too – they really make it home from home.

Finding a Banksy in Los Angeles “I was in LA to film a top-secret video for Matrix and while wandering back to my hotel, I had one of my most memorable moments ever – I’d inadvertently stumbled across an original Banksy!”
Edge of death in Iceland “I was posing for a picture by a waterfall in Iceland and Jamie Stevens decided to join me for a snap. As I moved to make room for him, I had to get closer and closer to the edge of the waterfall – I almost fell off!” Paul Falltrick and Ross Taylor
Drag queens in Sweden “On a show in Sweden last February, I was talking to two male models in the prep room. I stepped out to collect my kit bag and when I came back in, they were in full drag!”
A Makeover in the US “One of my most surreal moments was having my make-up done. I was in the US with Matrix and I couldn’t resist getting a picture.”

Captains of creativity
X-Presion, from left to right: Jose Luis Almendral, Marco Antonio Restrepo and Jorge Cáncer
Anyone who’s been lucky enough to see the breathtaking work of the Spanish group X-Presion will know the impact its inspirational art has. Jorge Cáncer, who alongside Marco Antonio Restrepo and Jose Luis Almendral makes up the team, shares the X-Presion philosophy and new collection Straya Creative HEAD Ireland: What is the X-Presion ethos? Jorge Cáncer: Express, create and share. It’s a philosophy that stands us apart from the crowd, we enjoy sharing and doing something for the benefit of the hairdressing industry. I think this attitude has made hairdressers and cosmetic brands think seriously about creativity. We’ve created a company with a new concept, dedicated exclusively to research and development in hairdressing. At the beginning it was very difficult, because sometimes when you want to make your dreams come true you have to reject a lot of other things. Just imagine a start-up with no salons, that’s not a customer of any cosmetic brands because it wants to stay independent. We’ve shown that there are other ways to move the industry, to do hair and to do business. CHI: Where do you find your inspiration? JC: The truth is that we prefer to go and explore, away from the big cities – we once even ended up in the Amazon rainforest! We go without the internet and without books or magazines; all we need for our first sketches are a pen, a notebook and the necessary hair tools. This is our secret to creating something authentic. Usually, one of us offers an idea, another polishes it and the third one gives the final version. That’s why we say that X-Presion is a kind of fourth idea, the one that combines

p38-47 Main_Fashion_GW2.indd 3
all three of us. One example is #xpresionthread, which was born from our collection NU:Bi [a AIPP Grand Trophy winner] and a couple of years later has evolved in a tool to create up-dos without bobby pins while offering a colourful hair accessory [see page 40]. It’s our most successful product, at least considering the amount of hairdressers all over the world that are using it. However, the real thing is Instagram – you can see a variety of looks created by different hairstylists. It’s a great source of inspiration for everybody! CHI: Whose work do you admire? JC: Trevor Sorbie, Robert Lobetta, Guido Palau and all the other dreamers who managed to go their own way and create an identity. CHI: Is there anything about the hairdressing industry you would change? JC: There are too many egos! CHI: How much do you have to travel for your work? JC: This year we’ve got more air miles than you can imagine! My father, who’s a musician, is always jealous. He loves travelling and says: “If I’d known scissors could make me travel that much…” We love to work in London, it always gives you great results. Also Mexico, Brazil, Russia, the US, Australia… there are so many places we love, and others that have not yet opened to us, such as Asia.

Get An education Want to stay ahead of the game at home and internationally? Education is your passport to success, says Sinead O’Sullivan One of the biggest benefits to a career in hairdressing is that it’s an incredible skill that you can take anywhere in the world. As a young hairdresser, travel is often very appealing, but whether you decide to stay nearer to home or jet off to far-flung destinations, there are many ways to ensure you stay ahead of your peers and make a name for yourself. If you’re an up-and-coming hairdresser, you should always be hungry for knowledge and future trends in hair and fashion. I would advise you to regularly attend courses and seminars to become as highly skilled as possible, as well as to stay in touch with the international fashion scene by following iconic session stylists. You’ll see their collaborations with the most celebrated fashion houses and how they bring their unique visions to life, which will in turn inspire you and also provide you with interesting conversation and visual aids when consulting with your most fashion-conscious clients. In some instances, hairdressers like to specialise as a colourist or stylist and there are many opportunities out there for you to develop your skills and experience in both directions.
50
p50_Last word_GW3.indd 1
Salon owners must map career paths for each member of their team and provide an excellent development programme, from apprentice to highly skilled stylist or colourist. By investing time into career planning, the team will value the owner or manager’s commitment to them and they will be more motivated and equipped with the latest product innovations and services to ensure a successful business. Another great way of raising your profile and increasing your hairdressing skills is to enter competitions. Not only will this provide you with developmental opportunities, it will also enable you to raise your profile with your clientele and the media. On top of this, many competitions offer a unique opportunituy in that they provide you with a platform in Ireland and further afield to showcase your talent, as well as mentoring by some of the biggest names in the hairdressing industry. So, whether you decide your career is here or abroad (or both!) ensure one thing – be on top of your game. Sinead O’Sullivan is education manager for Ireland for Wella
