hello...

What makes a really great hairdresser – the kind who outshines peers during training, builds up a loyal clientele and goes on to become a household name? Is it nurture – providing excellent training, support and mentoring? Or is it nature – that elusive ‘it’ factor that sets someone apart? You could argue that those who make it have something special, an innate talent or gift that can’t be learnt. But those with the drive, determination and willingness to learn can make it if they have the right support and mentoring. In our Youthquake feature from page 34, we look at how important it is to provide guidance to those who are currently coming through the ranks, reveal some of the stars of the future and give details on youth-focused competitions. It’s a long road to the top and there are no shortcuts, but by giving the future generation a bit of a head start we’ll not only help secure the future of the industry, we’ll be able to make the present so much better.

Aidan Fitzgerald

The edit The news and know-how from your industry

Fitzgerald joins the My New Hair team Aidan Fitzgerald, owner of the Aidan Fitzgerald salon in Blackrock and one of the biggest names in Irish hairdressing, is to offer ‘My New Hair’ services and treatments to patients who are suffering from cancer and medical hair loss, in his latest venture. Founded by international haircare expert Trevor Sorbie and offered by the likes of Andrew Collinge, Guy Kremer and Charles Worthington, ‘My New Hair’ has been designed to give training and education in dealing with hair loss and offers personalised and affordable bespoke wigs. Aidan said: “With My New Hair, clients can expect a respectful,

compassionate and professional consultation, tailored to their individual needs. My team and I regularly attend workshops led by cancer nurses who improve our skills in dealing with sensitive and difficult situations.” Aidan also explained he encourages clients to feel part of the process, so his salon can offer a bespoke solution. He added: “Prior to meeting with us, I advise all clients to send in ‘before and after’ pictures. This works in giving us a sense of the individuality and personality of each client and helps us to ensure their journey through this transitional time is as easy as possible.”

‘Is skin testing a necessity?’ asks IHF The IHF has launched a campaign to determine whether or not there needs to be a uniform approach to skin testing for colour clients. With every manufacturer having their own guidelines and instructions when it comes to testing for allergies to colour ingredients, there is no uniform procedure. Although the IHF encourages following the manufacturer’s instructions, it believes that other options, such a self-testing, need to be explored. Speaking about the initiative, Gerry Hynes, president of the IHF, said: “This is a subject area that the IHF is working on not only at national level with all our partners in the hairdressing industry, but at European level, too. We believe that we are obliged to pursue other options on behalf of our members – alternatives such as self-testing by clients or the use of questionnaires to determine if testing is required prior to application, or as a biannual check-up.” He went on to add that the IHF was asking the opinions of members as part of the consultation. He said: “This is your opportunity to speak up and give us your ideas and opinion about how changes in skin testing procedures have affected your business.” To get your opinion heard, call the IHF on 056 883 3808 or 086 699 5003

My main influences are Vidal Sassoon and Shane Henning… when I worked for Shane in Sydney, Australia, he reignited my passion for hair and brought out my best qualities.

If I wasn’t a hairdresser I’d definitely be an artist. Hairdressers and artists are very similar. I love the artistic side of the job and I get such enjoyment out of changing people’s style.

There is always light at the end of the tunnel… When I’m in the middle of a colour correction and there seems like there’s no hope, it always works out in the end. But guess what gets you through? Education.

Davines brings world style to London

Italian brand Davines is bringing its iconic World Style Contest to London for the first time. The brand has opened the 2014 competition to entrants, which offers stylists the chance to express their creativity and talent through both photography and stage performance. Split into three phases, the contest starts with a photographic submission, along with a video detailing a step-bystep montage of the finished look, that needs to reach Davines by 4 April. From there, stylists, journalists and Davines master trainers will judge the images, with those successful going through to the semi-final show in May. The final phase takes place at the Davines World Wide Hair Tour in London this October, where the winning contestant will go on to the World Style Contest final live onstage at the Freemasons’ Hall.

Ken Picton takes on ghd ambassador role Salon owner Ken Picton has been appointed ghd education ambassador. The Cardiff Bay entrepreneur will work with the iconic salon brand on a variety of projects on the road across Ireland and the UK. He will work in the ghd London Studio in Soho and with the media on a variety of projects to communicate creative techniques, business tips and mentor stylists. get in touch Want to tell us about your next awards event? The world is on its way to Frankfurt! OMC Hairworld and Hair & Beauty 2014 is fast approaching, but their’s still time to get your tickets to this international hair and beauty event. Taking place between 3 and 5 May at the Frankfurt Festhalle, Hairworld sees the world’s top hair and beauty brands gather in one place for three days of spectacular shows, high-class product displays, and the latest hair and fashion trends and exhibitions, as well as the Hairworld World Cup with 1,000 participants from 50 nations. “When about 65,000 hairdressers from all over the world come to Frankfurt to see the world hairdressing championships, this represents a unique opportunity for companies to position themselves with fascinating demonstrations and the latest collections and trends. We are looking forward to organising a gigantic show,” said director Binu Thomas. Order your tickets online at hair-beauty.messefrankfurt.com.

ESS to bring Philip Kingsley to Irish shores

We’ve just completed a make-up section on our first floor. As the demand increases for a onestop shop, we are delighted we can now offer our clients a full makeover service. It’s all about keeping them in the salon. And we are also looking forward to the launch of the Keratherapy range in salon.

Suzy Dowling Peter Mark

I’m busy hunting down models to attend the world championships this May in Frankfurt, where I’ll hopefully bring home some gold! We’re also busy brainstorming for the L’Oréal Professionnel Colour Trophy. I’ve just taken part in the Today FM Shave or Dye shoot for the Irish Cancer Society, too – it’s an amazing cause and millions of euros has been raised over the years.

Philip Kingsley

Leading trichologist Philip Kingsley’s haircare and styling range is launching to Irish salons. Previously unavailable in Ireland, the range will now be available in Irish salons thanks to Essential Salon Supplies, which has been given exclusive distribution rights by the brand. The launch of the products takes place on 24 March at Dublin’s Westbury Hotel. With more than 60 years of experience tending to the tresses of some of the biggest names in fashion and show business, (Kingsley created his iconic Elasticizer for Audrey Hepburn) Kingsley knows a thing of two about haircare. His award-winning eponymous range, focuses on the hair’s texture rather than the conventional standards of dry, normal and oil hair, and on hair and scalp health.

Noel Higgins Hairdressing

We have the IHF competitions in March so we’re busy preparing. We’ve also just launched ST Education, which is specifically geared towards providing one and two-day courses for the experienced stylist. And, last but not least, we have Vivika Davies coming to do a seminar for us, so we can’t wait!

Scene THe hottest events every month – get yourself scene!

Baby, it’s

cold outside

Fire and Ice, the theme for this year’s Matrix National Conference, couldn’t have been more appropriate as Iceland’s snowy landscape (-15ºC in the wind when stuck on a jaunt to the glaciers) played contrast to the heat of the audience attending, thrilled by a sneak-peek at product innovation and the exciting relaunch of Biolage. Hugo Boisvert, general manager of Matrix Ireland and UK, opened the conference at Harpa, Reykjavik’s stunning concert venue, which impressed with its window-lit neon light displays and incredible views of the city. Day two was down to business, with news on colour launches, education and the concept of Salon Emotion, a seven-step journey aimed at re-enchanting the client when in salon. Not only that, Kenneth Campbell, managing director of L’Oréal Professional Products Division, engaged the audience with a talk on the state of the hair industry. Sunday was the fun day, as a convoy of trucks snaked its way across the island to show attendees spectacular sights of the gushing geysirs, magnificent waterfalls and icy glaciers, finishing up with a warming dip in the geo-thermal pools at Iceland’s iconic Blue Lagoon. This was also the venue for the closing gala dinner; thanks to a VIP blow-dry team of Paul Ferguson, Marcus King and Christian Wiles, we arrived looking sleek for the evening festivities, which included the annual awards for the assembled artists, educators and distributors, with winners including Ray & Co, Salon Supplies and Alan Howard. The chills were multiplying as the 200-strong audience then hit the dance floor to celebrate the climax of a truly memorable trip.

Artists in

Residence

Creating a winning look during a frenzied prep session with a panel of judges looking on could un-nerve even the most experienced stylists. But, the 18 to 24year-olds battling it out to win a place on the Schwarzkopf Professional Irish Young Artistic Team looked calm and in control as they tended to their models ahead of the final presentation. Taking place at the Dylan Bradshaw Academy, and for the first time in Ireland, the applicants were judged on how suitable their look was for their model, make-up, styling, finish and overall look before presenting their model and moodboard to the panel of judges. With such a high standard all round it was a close call, but five team members were eventually selected. The winners will now go on to enjoy 12 months of training under the watchful eye of Schwarzkopf Professional’s top educators and get the opportunity to create their own collection of shoots, assist and appear on stage with some of the industry’s key names. Right about now, your clients will be thinking about their summer holidays and lightening their hair as the daylight grows longer. Whether it’s a natural, sun-kissed shade or an ash-white hue, nothing says summer better than being a beautiful blonde, which is why TIGI has just released its copyright©olour gloss 10/ series toners. The three no-ammonia, demi-permanent gloss shades are ideal for toning of pre-lightened hair, just in time to create those all-important clean and crisp summer blondes. The toners are: 10/02, 10/28, 10/08. With increased tone and neutralisation, the copyright©olour gloss 10/ series sits alongside the existing copyright©olour pastel toners, offering colourists more creative choice than ever before. Created to the specifications of Christel Lundqvist, TIGI technical creative director, these three new shades allow colourists to push their creativity and work more efficiently. For the fashion-forward, the three shades are perfect for creating the S/S14 catwalk looks; from the Castaway trend, where the palette includes multi-tones of sand, oyster blonde and buttermilk; to the Uptown Girl, which sees softer hues such as jasmine white, barley white, rose silk, elderflower and liquid metallics rise to the fore.

“When I am toning pre-lightened hair I need a product that is gentle, fast and allows me to customise my formula based on the level of toning required – the TIGI copyright©olour gloss 10/ series does all this and more” Christel Lundqvist, TIGI technical creative director

Perfectly Natural At home, in the salon – everything starts with care. And that’s why the new Schwarzkopf Professional BC Hairtheraphy range is bringing hair back to natural perfection and setting a new benchmark in beautiful hair “Like Schwarzkopf Professional, I believe in a holistic hair care culture,” says new global care ambassador John Gillespie. “Every woman dreams of having beautiful hair and healthy-looking hair is the foundation. And that is why expert advice from a hairdresser and customised haircare products are essential. A perfect hair care service should be a pillar in day-to-day salon work.” With the BC Hairtherapy ranges, hairdressers can offer their customers targeted haircare solutions for all hair needs and put together a regime that starts in the salon and can be continued at home for lasting results. Comprised of seven hair therapy lines for use at home as well as exclusive in-salon treatment products, the BC Hairtherapy range includes: Smooth Perfect for unruly, coarse hair; Repair Rescue for damaged hair; Color Freeze for colour-treated and bleached hair; Moisture Kick for dry hair; Volume Boost for fine hair; Time Restore for mature hair and Hair Activator for thinning hair; and 100 per cent customisable and tailormade in-salon services – the BC power shots. So what makes the new BC Hairtherapy range so unique? The secret lies in the new Cell Perfector technology. Combining cuticula Cell Perfector technology for optimum replenishment of the hair’s surface with cortex Cell Perfector technology to rebuild the hair structure deep inside the hair’s cells, Cell Perfector refills the gaps in the hair’s surface caused by external stress, chemical treatment or heating styling tools. It recreates the hair’s natural surface by restoring lipid protection layers and brings it as near to its natural state as possible – close to perfection. Your clients will see and feel the difference. Are you ready to bring a new care culture into your salon?

#Youthquake

They’re passionate, have the skills and most importantly the motivation to make it to the top. But are you doing enough to help the next generation of Irish hairdressing icons get there?

34

19/2/14 10:28:10

e Y

ou could argue that we’ve been experiencing a youthquake ever since legendary editor Diana Vreeland first coined the phrase back in the ’60s. But in the past five years – thanks no doubt to the evolution of social media – it seems like a new youth movement has emerged. It has been reinvigorated, reinvented and those involved are ready to make their mark in the industry, which is undoubtedly a huge plus for driving creativity and innovation forward. Attend any hairdressing competition or event and the number of passionate young hairdressers and trainees in attendance can attest to that. But away from all the glitz and glamour of competitions and high profile events, what does this actually mean for your business and the day-to-day running of your salon? Do salon owners need to take a step back and see what they need to do to make sure this enthusiasm and ambition isn’t wasted? One salon owner with a progressive outlook on how the industry needs to support the next generation is Mark O’Keeffe, owner of the Brown Sugar group, who recently added Sugar Cubed – a dedicated youth salon – to his lineup. At Sugar Cubed the clientele is younger, prices have been reduced, and most importantly for Mark, staff are all under 30 years old. “As someone who became a manager at 19, I know the benefit of someone trusting in you at a young age. Mark Byrne, who manages Sugar Cubed, might be only 30 but he’s so tuned-in to what is current and on-trend and that’s what the Sugar Cubed clientele want. I give them the freedom to do what they think is right in the day-to-day running of the salon. They believe in what they’re doing and that motivates them more, so as a business owner you’re getting so much more from them.” Another salon with an unconventional outlook that drives results is Eddie Mulligan, owner of the Hype Hair group in the south-east. “Coming from a military background, I’ve seen first hand how important it is to invest in your staff because your staff are your greatest asset,” he says. “I see my best staff members as a special forces unit. You train them up, send them out to train or compete and then when they come back to the salon, they bring the level of hairdressing up across the board. Without that mentoring

Creative Head Ireland

p34-39_Youth Quake Feature_GW5.indd 3

and training, they’ll never be able to progress or give your clients the highest level of customer service.” This ethos of hard work and continual training is something salon owner and L’Oréal Professionnel educator Dylan Bradshaw also feels passionately about. “The younger generation can be harder to keep focused in business and I think many of them believe that they’re entitled to immediate success, but the hairdressers that succeed are the ones that work really hard and earn their place,” he explains. “My job is to give them that education and training and the skills needed to deal with high-pressure environments. Young hairdressers now have the opportunity to travel around the world, but I think we also need to reassess our attitude to the industry and take it more seriously. I want hairdressing to be considered in the same way as you would accountancy or law. We can only get the best and the brightest that way.” So how can salon owners and industry insiders mould this abundance of creativity, passion and enthusiasm and help the next generation of hairdressing icons reach the top? “Competitions are so important because when young hairdressers are competing it motivates them to really push themselves, and this has a huge knock-on effect when they go back to the salon,” says Katrina Kelly, owner of K2 Hair in Dublin and mentor on the IHF Junior Council. “They’re much more confident in their ability because it lets them see that they’re an asset and deserve to be mentored.” For Sinead O’Sullivan, Wella Professionals education manager for Ireland, listening to what the younger generation has to say and nurturing and developing their talent is vital. She explains: “Young hairdressers bring so much energy and life into the industry. They’re more open to change and are always exploring new ways to attract clients and that should be welcomed by all salon owners.” And Nikki Finnis, Irish technical coordinator for Schwarzkopf Professional, agrees: “We want to find the stars of tomorrow. Ireland is up there with the best in the world and there’s so much hidden talent. The more we encourage our young talent to compete, the more we’re putting Irish hairdressing on the map and that’s a good thing for everyone involved in the industry.”

What do you do when you don’t really want to enter competitions but still want to make your mark in the industry? Become your own personal PR machine utilising the power of social media, of course! It paid off for Aviary Lane stylist Matthew Feeney – having assisted renowned session stylists Michael Leong and Zara Cox on editorial shoots, the Instagram addict started posting his work and, having been spotted by Hershesons in the UK, has been assisting at London Fashion Week.

She may only be 24, but Lisa has nearly 10 years’ experience under her belt, having started her training as a part-time hairdresser in a local salon. She moved to Dylan Bradshaw four years ago and is currently completing her fourth and final year of training and has already cultivated a niche clientele in the salon by being the go-to stylist for smoothing treatments. When she’s not in salon, Lisa can be found working on editorial shoots for the likes of Irish Tatler and tending to the tresses of some of Ireland’s most famous faces.

Hairdressing for six years, Brian became a team member on Generation Now last year and has spent the past six months travelling to the UK to take part in a range of intensive training sessions, as well as assisting at the Redbull Studios in London during London: Collections Men. Passionate about establishing Irish hairdressing on the international stage, Brian hopes to continue exploring the creative side of the industry by assisting on shoots and showing young Irish hairdressers that the opportunities to succeed are there for the taking.

Today’s under 25s are transforming the workplace. They’re educated, progressive and passionate about their craft. Here we profile six rising stars that are paving the way for change

Danielle Whelan Style Club SWS, 23

Roy Lee

Brown Sugar, 25

Katie Mulville

An accounting and finance degree isn’t the most typical way to start off a career in hairdressing, but this DIT graduate decided to pursue a more academic approach to business before starting her training with Style Club a year and a half ago. In that short timeframe, Danielle has already made her mark, winning the Peter Mark Young Trainee Award and taking home the title of Young Colourist at the 2013 L’Oréal Professionnel Colour Trophy, as well as concentrating on session styling, bridal hair and more editorial looks.

Having qualified seven years ago, Roy has been with Brown Sugar for a little over four years and has built up a loyal clientele in the salon and a reputation as one of the country’s hottest young session stylists. He has already worked with the likes of Image and the Sunday Independent Life magazine. His next goal is to become a L’Oréal Professionnel ID Artist and to win the L’Oréal Professionnel Colour Trophy, but ultimately he would like to own his own salon in the not too distant future.

As a member of the Sebastian Professional Cult Team, Katie says that exploring the creative side of the industry has given her an added confidence in the salon and believes that the two sides of the industry shouldn’t be so polarised. And with a growing clientele despite only being qualified for two years, the numbers speak for themselves. As well as working in the salon, Katie hopes to continue building her session work portfolio and to further push artistic boundaries.

Thinning hair remains a subject most of us don’t like to talk about. If it’s discussed at all, it’s in hushed tones, as if we should be ashamed of it. However, more than 50 per cent of all male and female clients have thinning hair,* so why aren’t more of us talking about it? This is what NIOXIN is hoping to confront with its 30 Day Challenge. To help celebrate Thinning Hair Awareness Week, which takes place from 3 to 9 March, NIOXIN is encouraging everyone to take the NIOXIN 30 Day Challenge, kicking off on 3 March. Here, we talk to Kay McIntyre of McIntyres and NIOXIN education ambassador as she explains to us how the 30 Day Challenge works and what NIOXIN hopes to achieve with the campaign…

Creative HEAD: What is the 30 Day Challenge and when does it launch? Kay McIntyre: To help celebrate Thinning Hair Awareness Week, we are encouraging everyone to take the NIOXIN 30 Day

Challenge for the whole of March as NIOXIN promises users thicker, fuller looking hair in 30 days** or their money back.

CH: What is the aim? KM: NIOXIN’s aim is to help people who worry about thinning hair, those who have damaged hair, as well as those who have thinning hair, to get the best from their hair, giving them confidence to enjoy life.

CH: Is it just for clients or do salons benefit as well?

KM: During the 30 Day Challenge, we are encouraging NIOXIN salons

? e g n e l l a h c e th to take their own 30 Day Challenge, in which they try and get 30 new NIOXIN clients in one month. To help attract new clients, NIOXIN salons will be running a series of events where clients can purchase NIOXIN and receive advice and tips.

KM: NIOXIN offers a money back guarantee for all those purchasing the kit. CH: How many salons are participating in the challenge so far? KM: We have a number of salons confirmed, including Headmasters, HOB Salons and Russell Eaton, and we expect many more to accept the challenge.

CH: What do clients have to do to take part?

CH: How is NIOXIN

KM: It’s really simple: all

generating interest in the challenge? KM: NIOXIN has generated a hashtag, #30DayChallenge, which salons and stylists can use on Twitter to interact with other salons throughout March.

Brush up It’s not a lack of regulation that’s dragging industry standards down, argues John Maher, it’s the outdated training methods that are still being used The issue of standards in the hairdressing industry has been a bone of contention for as long as any of us can remember. We belong to an industry made up of thousands of individual businesses serving millions of clients, so adopting a central system would be a huge undertaking. And the logistics of implementing a standards authority and securing support across the industry would not be for the faint-hearted! There are lots of hairdressing education providers in Ireland with considerable variation in the approach they take and the results they achieve. But I believe the most successful businesses take a logical approach to education and training to get the best results, and this means assessing what kind of business they have and what kind of education they need to best facilitate their clients. Look at it this way: if you want to work in haute couture, you find a fashion house that will give you experience – you don’t find a job in a local high street clothing chain to get the experience that will get you there. The same goes for hairdressing. But that being said, a consistent level of education across the board is key, regardless of what profession you are in. And, as with many industries, I believe those working directly in the business are best equipped to deliver the training that’s most relevant. Let’s not over-complicate the system. We should be utilising the talent and resources that currently exist and assist the successful, passionate hairdressing educators who are delivering great results by spreading the word to educators who are providing training that is stale and obsolete. The passion and energy visible at every event in the hairdressing calendar is a key motivator for all of us and as and a great driving force for our business. The talent is all around us. Will you make the first move? John Maher is director of Queen salon and Queen Academy in Dublin
