SMALLER SALONS DOWNBEAT ABOUT BUSINESS GROWTH A RECENT STUDY has revealed a sharp divide between small and medium-sized firms on their business outlooks, raising concern for the survival of micro salons, with fewer than five employees. Fewer than half of microbusiness owners expect their company to grow over the next two years, compared with almost threequarters of larger scale SMEs, according to a new report by Albion Ventures, independent venture capital investors in the UK. The fourth Albion Growth Report, which is based on interviews with 1,000 SMEs, looks at what creates and impedes growth, with 57 per cent of SMEs expecting to register an increase in productivity in the next 24 months compared with 33 per cent of micro businesses. In addition, finding skilled staff was a top concern for companies with more than five employees, while cash flow and red tape were the biggest concerns among microbusinesses. “As a small business owner I am finding it easier to perform with fewer staff numbers and a small shop unit,” explains a salon owner from Tullamore, Co. Offaly. “Our salon was once larger – we downsized on purpose so we could become more streamlined and efficient, as we felt all profits were going into keeping the large rents and salaries paid rather than ourselves.” The salon owner, who wished to remain anonymous, continued: “We found it easier to source a smaller premises, where rents were more negotiable. “Staffing is no longer an issue as before we had to keep everyone on a one rate policy due to the number employed, now we are more flexible than before and can offer higher salaries due to lower overheads.”

Most Wanted is open for Irish entries! IF YOU’RE TOP Irish hairdressing talent then we want to know you, meet you and reward you! Enter the Most Wanted awards now, and come this September you could be on stage accepting one of the most coveted prizes in the industry. Creative HEAD’s Most Wanted awards celebrate the finest talents in hairdressing, rewarding phenomenal creativity and business innovation, as well as remarkable teamwork and exceptional customer service. Once again there are two Irish categories to enter – Exceptional Stylist sponsored by Schwarzkopf Professional, and Supreme Team sponsored by L’Oréal Professionnel. Terry McGovern, commercial director of L’Oréal Professional Products Division Ireland, said: “2016 was the first time that the Most Wanted awards had categories that were specifically for Irish salons to enter, which created such a huge buzz. It was incredible to see such a high calibre of Irish hairdressers as finalists for the Supreme Team award and the Exceptional Stylist award, so I’ve no doubt that the number of entries will grow 10-fold this year!” Martin McAllorum, head of sales for Schwarzkopf Professional in Ireland, added: “Schwarzkopf Professional is very excited to sponsor Most Wanted Exceptional Stylist for Ireland as it gives the unbelievable talent we have here a platform to showcase their talent to the industry’s wider audience. Ireland consistently produces world class stylists and I look forward to seeing this proven again with this year’s competition.” Last year the inaugural Exceptional Stylist award was won by Dylan Bradshaw of Dylan Bradshaw in Dublin, while Ikon Hair Design in Cork took home the Supreme Team prize. The awards culminate in a glittering Grand Final, taking place on 4 September in London. The deadlines for entries is 15 May. Mary Portas shares consumer insight Consumer expert Mary Portas, aka ‘Queen of Shops’ (pictured above) wowed guests with her unique insight at salon software brand Phorest’s third annual Salon Owners Summit. The event, which was held at the Shelbourne Hotel in Dublin, was attended by delegates from all over Europe and the USA, was titled “Teambuilding – creating a culture of initiative in your salon”. The day involved networking, learning and innovation for businesses. Speaking alongside Mary Portas was Richard Mullender, an ex-chief hostage negotiator, who shared his knowledge on effective listening and the psychology of influence.

We are collaborating with Annette O’Brien from Le Beau Beauty Salon to teach our clients how to create glamorous looks. We are starting our new hands-on hair and make-up workshops to do exactly that. The four sold-out events are followed by Q&A sessions, with tips and tricks on styling.

THE GLAM SQUAD There was more than a hint of luxury at Gainfort Academy’s Style Sessions 2016, which celebrated glitz and glamour in the name of charity. The evening was hosted by presenter and singer Sharon Clancy, who introduced the Gainfort Academy style squad, made up of rising stars Margo Kilkenny, Susan Ryann and Niamh Byrne. Guests watched expert hair and makeup tutorials, and proceeds from the evening were donated to the St Gabriel’s Childrens Ward in Wexford General Hospital.

THE BUSINESS EDIT THE TIPPING POINT DO YOU HAVE A GRATUITIES POLICY IN PLACE? IN THE SERVICE SECTOR, many workers rely on the extra income brought in from tips. But recent revelations have shown that tips aren’t always passed on to those they were intended for… Trade union United Voices of the World claimed that 75 per cent of service charges collected at Harrods cafes and restaurants – equating to £2.5m (€2.9m) a year – is retained, which led to protests outside the iconic department store. This follows a high-profile case where the chef Michel Roux Jr, owner of La Gavroche restaurant, admitted tips were not routinely passed on to staff. So what is the situation in salons? “Not all clients at the salon tip, but most do,” explains Tamar Chambers, director at Robert

12_Business Edit.indd 1

WHEN DID YOU REALISE THAT YOU WANTED TO BE A HAIRDRESSER? I’ve always had a creative flair and used to sit in my aunt’s salon begging for colour. I knew then that hairdressing was the path for me, as I could express myself in an environment that thrives on creativity. At school I started a course in hairdressing and then applied for a job with Lloyds – that’s when it all started.

Chambers. “The ones who do tend to tip every time they visit usually leave the same amount each time. Most tip €5, some €10, some €20.” With this amount of money at stake, many salons put a procedure in place for ensuring the money goes where it should. “At our reception desk, every member of the team has their own tip drawer that is used if the client hasn’t managed to pass it to the stylist themselves,” explains Ian Marshall of Spargo in Essex, UK. “When we first started, we only had a team of seven and controlling the tips was easy as most of the time they were handed straight to the team member. But as the team grew, we noticed that a few tips were going missing.” After some investigation, he found out where they were going and put a stop to it. “We sat down as a team and thought about a solution. Now every team member has a drawer that is not only used to put their tips in if a client can’t hand it to them personally, but also for notes that the team need and information that needs to be passed on. It’s become part of our culture and it really is needed when you have a team of 24 like we do now,” Ian explains. Robert Chambers salon encourages those higher up to take the initiative to divide their tips with those who have helped them. “Personally I believe all stylists should share a portion of their tips with the assistants,” says Tamar Chambers. “I would also encourage clients to give tips directly or make a note so the stylist knows who left it. It’s more personal.” Tips are good for morale and can give a boost to your salon – but how can you maximise the likelihood that your happy clients will be leaving them? “Usually tips are associated with extra effort,” says Tamar. “Always give your clients as much as you can. A longer head massage, favourite magazines, blow-dry tips, free fringe trims, product recommendations – even a hug goes a long way!”

HIGHLIGHTS SO FAR? When I started at Lloyds, I went to my first hair competition to support the girls working with me. I saw the buzz they all got from it and the following year I entered Alfaparf Milano’s Fantastic Hairdresser Awards. For two years running I placed in the top four for Junior Colour and Cut. In July I applied for the Irish Hairdressers Federation Star Team and competed

in three stages with trainees from all over the country. In November I found out that I had got myself a place on the team for 2017 and cried for days after – definitely the highlight so far! WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN 10 YEARS? I hope people would come to me for advice. I hope to continue my education and to help other hairdressers with

their training. I will definitely be still entering every competition I can and keep learning. WHAT IS YOUR DREAM HAIRDRESSING GIG? I would love to become a trainer – I love sharing knowledge with the other girls here and motivating them to enter competitions. I want to help other hairdressers learn and keep their passion for the industry alive.

COLOUR CONSULTATION INSPIRATION, INNOVATION AND BUSINESS BOOSTING IDEAS TO MAKE COLOUR BIG IN YOUR SALON

IN ASSOCIATION WITH

THIS MONTH: EMERGING TRENDS

{

THE SERVICE

}

SPRING INTO NEW COLOUR TRENDS!

INSPIRED BY THE runway, L’Oréal Professionnel has spotted two emerging trends for this S/S17 season. The first is a new service, called Foilyage. What is the difference between Balayage and Foilyage? Well, Foilyage, like Balayage, is a technique where lighter pieces are painted freehand into the hair. However, selected pieces are then wrapped in foils, creating defined lightness blended with softer tones, perfect for a natural result. Our beautiful ambassador Emmy Rappe, wears a copper Foilyage look but this technique is great for blondes and brunettes too. The second trend of the season, modelled by our stunning ambassador, Hailey Baldwin, takes inspiration from the ‘barely there’ nude make-up trend, using the beige hair palette. Perfect for spring and so easy to wear, it plays with a blend of warm and cool beige tones. This gives the hair an effortless natural glow – the ultimate make under.

TARGET THE TIME-SAVERS

*Kantar Wordpanel, Females GB 12 m/e Sep 2015.

ENTICING THAT ELUSIVE 25 to 34-year-old client into the salon is challenging, yet they spend the most versus any other age group in the salon and it’s growing at 3 per cent.* So, what do they care about? How can we tailor our services to meet their needs? These women are experiencing a shift in their day-to-day lives; different priorities or commitments mean less ‘me time’. Hair damage is another worry with about 75 per cent* of them having shoulder length hair or longer. There is a desire for manageable hair and they are willing to invest to make this happen. They value the professional difference but want consistency of service delivered and FAST! Here are our top tips for time-savers:

1. THE RIGHT INSIGHT – Tap into their

time-conscious needs. Ask how much time they have to do their hair?

2. THE RIGHT LENGTH – Recommend a

medium-length style. On average women spend two minutes less a day styling this length hair – that’s 12 hours a year.

3. THE RIGHT SERVICES – Colour products

such DIA and LUO have express development times, meaning clients can have their colour done in under an hour.

Encourage clients to use it when they have hair coloured for stronger, shinier hair! Frank O’Keeffe from Brown Sugar shares the salon’s top tips on how to sell Smartbond... 1. Inside story SITSTIL, DUBLIN

When Mark Doherty first opened Sitstil in 2002, he created an antique haven – but after nearly 15 years in the business, it was time for a change. “The shabby had overtaken the chic,” he jokes. “The general ethos of the salon hasn’t changed much, but the industry has and client expectations are higher than ever. We needed to create a luxurious space with little points of interest”. And this has certainly been achieved; stepping off the busy street and through the rich blue doors, clients are welcomed into a sanctuary where they can relax. Cream and peach walls give the salon an unfussy backdrop, and the downstairs training space doubles up as a private area for clients to discuss their needs. There are smooth, circular mirrors, hanging orbs of light and lots of touches of nature. “Individuality resonates throughout our salon,” says Mark. “It’s designed with the outside very much in mind. We are on a corner site and have lots of natural light flooding in through the windows – and I made sure we had a collection of plants to join together the inside and outside spaces.”

THE NEW

BLONDE CLIENTS ARE GOING CRAZY FOR BLONDE – SO GIVE THEM WHAT THEY WANT WITHOUT COMPROMISING THEIR HAIR HEALTH, WITH BLONDME BY SCHWARZKOPF PROFESSIONAL

BLONDE IS BIG BUSINESS – but the lightening process can leave hair looking tired and lacklustre. That’s why Schwarzkopf Professional is entering a new era of blonde, to ensure your client’s hair looks perfect, whether it’s ash, honey or platinum.

IN THE SALON

The BLONDME colour range is now integrated with innovative bonding technology to colour and bond hair in one easy step. The Schwarzkopf Professional Advanced Bonding System transforms hair by rebuilding it from the inside, leaving hair feeling nourished and strengthened. A whole spectrum of blonde looks is possible. Icy tones can be achieved with dazzling shine while warmer honey shades can be softened with subtle highlights. Or, for an edgier look, there’s the possibility of toning for pastels, greys and platinums. “My clients want their blonde to be bright and beautiful, they want to be illuminated,” says Kim V , global BLONDME ambassador. “It’s all about blondes to fit their personality, skin tones and eye colour.”

AT HOME

And once you’ve worked your magic in the salon, you can offer them the BLONDME Bonding Care aftercare range to keep their hair looking great for longer. The aftercare range contains bonding technology designed to complement BLONDME colour treatments, so you can send your new blondes home with a specially tailored kit to keep their hair shining bright. Clients with cold shades can start with the Tone Enhancing Shampoo for Cool Blondes. Follow it with the Tone Enhancing Bonding Mask for hydration, or for an everyday dose of moisture, there is the Tone Enhancing Spray Conditioner, a lightweight shortcut to smoothness designed for cool blondes. And for warmer blondes, there is the Tone Enhancing Bonding Shampoo for Warm Blondes, followed by a warm blonde mask, which says goodbye to dullness and hello to rich colour.

For more information on BLONDME, call 01 4046424 or visit schwarzkopf-professional.co.uk

THE HOTTEST EVENTS AROUND – GET YOURSELF SCENE!

NON-STOP

party THIS WASN’T Creative HEAD’s first time attending a global hair event in Las Vegas, but it was the biggest one we’d ever witnessed – 10,000 people celebrating the start of Redken’s biannual Symposium, including teams from Reds, Rossano’s and Black Amber salons. It was a helluva show: runway fashion! Freestyle BMX stunt riders! And it got everyone in the mood for the two days of seminars and workshops that followed, with names such as LA colour legend Tracey Cunningham, styling maestro Sam Villa and UK artists Adam Browne and Kelly Scott. The closing party even had Joe Jonas’s band DNCE performing hits such as Cake By The Ocean to an enthusiastic crowd. The crowd then left Vegas to fly to Miami for the Business Forum, where new product innovations such cool colour City Beats, were revealed. It all climaxed with a party on a $40m (€37.6m) yacht, cruising around the Florida coast – how else do you spend your Thursday night? It was Miami, after all…

perfection THE PRESSURE WAS ON as 30 hairdressing assistants competed in this year’s House of Colour Trendsetter Awards, hoping to prove their skills in front of an audience of more than 350 people. The annual competition, which is now in its 16th year, involved assistants from all branches of House of Colour and was judged by a panel that included Wella Generation NOW member and TrendVision Award Silver medallist, Shauna Forman. Winners earned themselves a place assisting the House of Colour Creative Team on a shoot and all proceeds of the night went to the Children’s University Hospital, Temple Street. Guests were also treated to a stunning hair show by the House of Colour Dream Team, curated by the top four trainees from 2016 – Chloe Richardson, Christine Whelan, Megan Doherty and Emily Drumm. Susan Byrne, co-founder of House of Colour group, said: “Year after year these awards get bigger and better – the standard was inspiring and we can see our future is in safe hands!”

success

ZEBA HAIRDRESSING’S END OF YEAR Trainee Showcase took inspiration from vintage style, with trainees creating classic looks from the 1940s to the 1980s. The salon group – which has branches in Dublin, Sandymount and Maynooth – invited trainees to put together mood boards before presenting their looks, meshing fashion and hair to teach them to consider the whole look. Stephanie Greene was announced as the overall winner of the Trainee Showcase, for her editorial punk style and boho fashion look. The judging panel included Ciaran Cannon and Mark Byrne from Zeba, as well as Thomas Bennett from L’Oréal Professionnel. Angie Dromgoole, director of Zeba Hairdressing, said: “We take pride in promoting talent among our trainees. We believe in consistent training and building the esteem of the assistants so they can develop their skills in the best way possible.”
